  • The Silmarils were the three jewels that caused many of the conflicts during the Years of the Trees and the First Age within The Silmarillion. The history of the Silmarils is long and tragic, with tales of hope and courage as well. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the Silmarils in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    Samwise pointed out the fact in the two towers that the story of the silmarils lived on in them, as they carried in the phial of Galadriel the light of Earendil, which was the light of one of the silmarils, in which was contained the light of the two trees. I find it fitting, that that light which Ungoliant devoured from the two trees, was so effective a weapon (in the form of the silmaril's light) against Shelob, one of the last of the spawn of Ungoliant.

      The light of Eärendil was captured by lady Galadriel in a glass vial and gifted to Frodo on his quest to Mt Doom “light in dark places when all other lights go out.”

    Ya know, it is (to me at least) such a bitter irony that The Silmarilli, gems that give off and represent so much light, were the cause of so much greed, lust, betrayal, and darkness in Arda. I honestly quite hope that The Prophecy of Mandos is indeed true so that they will be used for good (as they were gonna be initially, until Fëanor's pride and own greed got the better of him) and bring back the unfathomable and beautiful light of The Two Trees. But anyway, Yoystan, I was watching your second part on the sorrowful and tragic tale of The Children of Húrin when I got notified for this equally as amazing video, so I am gonna go back to that now, and I cannot wait to see more!!! :)

    Muh Silmarils!
    Honestly, I love how there is a trend in Middle Earth of jewelry causing so much trouble! The Silmarils, the Arkenstone, the Rings...

    • @jakealter5504
      @jakealter5504 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ashla Icebreaker true but the arkenstone only influenced the battle of the five armies and the attempt to remove Smaug. The only ring that really caused trouble was the one ring. I’d say that it was the silmarils that caused the most conflict since they basically caused all of the wars in the first age and all of the kinslayings

    • @thehunter7422
      @thehunter7422 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny part is ( besides the Arkenstone ) the rings and silmarils and other famous jewels that waged war on other families were firstly created by the same damn bloodline lol . Feanor of the silmarils then later his grandson Celebrimbor made the rings of power . Too bad Curufin ( one of Feanors sons and Celebrimbors father ) didn't have any jewel stories .

    When I think about Feanor, he was a very cool guy some times. For expample (2:18) when Melkor (the mightiest of Valar) came to his house, and demanded the Silmarils and threatened Feanor. What would you say to the mightiest god if he came to your door like that? Most beings would be afraid of Melkor, of course, as he was originally designed by Eru to become the lord of the universe (Ea). But Feanor said something like "Get the hell out of my doors and dont you dare returning". This was such a great embarrassment for Melkor that it lowered his might permanently. Melkor knew that he would became a great laugh-at material for everyone in the lands of Valar, so he decided to dare to return, but only when Feanor was not home, because he was too afraid of facing him again.

Hurin didn't tell him to do one as being bound to that bloody chair was forced to entertain him, but did pull a "you have no power here no matter what you do to me, and while we're here let me detail the ways in which you specifically are a thrall and a moron" which I think is a power move above the "fuck you and fuck off here's a door slammed in your face" that Feanor did. Hurin was ruthless in that exchange 😂

    What I find amazing is how you endlessly review the marvelously intertwined narratives of Tolkien's histories (for me, they are real events which actually occured in the deeps of another realm of the universe) from so many specific perspectives without sounding repetitious. It is truly wonderful how you constantly bring new light to these tales which I have known for most of my life (since 1974 when I first read tLotR).

    The Silmarils are a good metaphor for many religions. At their core they speak of goodness and light but cause so much pain and violence. It’s a constant balance. Good can cause evil and evil can cause good. Also, people gay down on Morgoth, but without him we wouldn’t have these stories we love so much. Ever think of thaaaaaaaaaaat?????

That as the Trees withered, if the Silmarils were not taken by Melkor then the Sun and Moon would never have been made. Although unrelated, the fate of Silmarils kind of remind me of the gems from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time; Kokiri Emerald, Goron Ruby, and Zora Sapphire. Each, in my opinion, represent the three elements of Wind, Earth, and Water respectively and since each Silmaril were lost to the Sky, Earth, and Sea I just found it fun to compare them.

    You said, "It was thus given to his wife to wear, and Lúthien became the fairest sight east of the sea. ..." Where did you find this? I would like to read it.
    It seems almost cnntradictory to a passage in Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 19 Of Beren and Luthien, Part 1 "It is told in the Lay of Leithian that Beren came stumbling into Doriath grey and bowed as with many years of woe, so great had been the torment of the road. But wandering in the summer in the woods of Neldoreth he came upon Lúthien, daughter of Thingol and Melian, at a time of evening under moonrise, as she danced upon the unfading grass in the glades beside Esgalduin. Then all memory of his pain departed from him, and he fell into an enchantment; for Lúthien was the most beautiful of all the Children of Iluvatar. Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight. As the light upon the leaves of trees, as the voice of clear waters, as the stars above the mists of the world, such was her glory and her loveliness; and in her face was a shining light."
    I never held that Lúthien's beauty needed the Silmarillion to achieve full blossom; I hold that Illuvitar created her as "the most beautiful of all the Children of Iluvatar."

    Took me a long time to find the inspiration behind Feanor. I believe irs Fearon, a norman term for a smith who works with Iron. Silmarils were inspired by the sawel rune.

    I must admit, there's been a little bit of a headscratcher regarding the Silmarils (it's even pointed out on some TVTropes pages about the legendarium).
    Compare the One Ring: it has a power in the world that acts upon beings, compelling them to claim it and wear it, to effectively assume the power of Sauron in equal measure to their own potential, and its ability to reshape the world drives a lot of the conflict of LotR. The Silmarils, OTOH, while possessing great beauty, self-luminance, and the potential to reignite the Two Trees of Valinor, does not appear to have the same soul-warping effect that the One Ring does. Which ends up leading to the question: does possession of the Silmarils convey any real power in Arda, or were the wars for their sake mostly waged primarily for reasons having nothing to do with them, Oath of the Sons of Fëanor notwithstanding?
    I don't think it diminishes the lore at all, and might even open up some interesting questions.

      The silmarils hold the light of the two trees. An ancient artifact if u will. The last of it. Its precious to the elves. And only the elves want them.
