Try prepping your paper with a water wash before using it. It will soften the fibres and remove some of the sizing which will allow the paint to penetrate the paper more, this may resolve some of the streaking issues.
I tape the paper to a surface, you don’t have to but it does control the curling, then apply a very generous coat of clear water across the entire surface with a brush, checking in the light to make sure there are no dry areas. Let that water soak into the paper until there is no visible water on the surface, it just looks damp. I then apply another mopping of water and leave it to dry completely. When I come back to the dried paper it accepts that paint much more readily without having to use as much water.
I do this for all of my paper including watercolour sketchbooks I just find that little bit of prep pays off.
I always enjoy your videos and have liked watching your style evolve over time.

They are both amazing. I really like the bubbles in the purple section in the first one, and the heavy wavy lines and the light purple braiding(?) in the second one, but like I said, they're both amazing.

OMG the 2 year old painting is soooooo gorgeous❣️❣️. But then, I think everything you do is. Can’t wait to see how the present one comes out. I’m relatively new to your channel, a matter of months, not years. Wish I had discovered this type of art long before I did. It appeals to my logical side with all the précise lines & doodles. But then it’s so beautiful too with the colors you choose.

Welcome to my little art corner then! I'm really happy you found me 🫶🏻 I'm about to send off the painting I did for the winner of my giveaway and then I will wait until she gets it, before I will post the video 😊 so probably about two more weeks or so. I was 52 when I rediscovered art, and it took me a good year to find what I like. I feel the same about wishing I had found my art style sooner, but everything happens for a reason. Now, I have the time to truly dive in and explore, which I wouldn't have had back then, so I guess it all worked out 😊 I hope you get to make the most of the time you can allow yourself to dedicate to play around, and I'm happy my videos will be there to keep you company 💕❤️

Bettina, I love this piece! I think that the streaks in the paint worked to your advantage, adding highlights and lowlights to the doodles. As usual, the colored pencils really emphasized the shapes. I may have to get my hot press paper out and try the watercolors. Thanks, as always, for sharing your process!

Hot pressed paper is much more difficult to use. The surface is pretty different from the NOT. If I want to distribute a wash evenly on this paper I do it wet on wet. And no fiddling, this is the reason for the streaks. Although the paint might sitting on top of the paper it dries much quicker. And if you fiddle with this area there will be no even wash left. I began my watercolor adventure on this kind of paper and man what was I frustrated, because it was so difficult to use. If you are used to NOT paper stick with it. It is much easier and much more forgiving. ❤❤❤

Perhaps spritz with a very fine mist of water before painting an area or pre-wet each section with brush/water before dropping in color. I like Hot press and use that technique most of the time.

My lines are pretty shaky sometimes….You are an amazing artist. Too bad about the smelly paper….but glad that you found the hot press would work so well with yr pencils. I wonder if working wet on wet would help with the paint issue?

It’s funny how people like different types of paper isn’t it? I really don’t like Hannemuhle paper but I LOVE Arches and use it all the time because I just paint my best paintings on it, however, I’ve never ever noticed a smell. I’ve even just gone and sought some out to sniff it 😂 but nothing 🤷🏻‍♀️. Maybe you have a bad batch? Another lovely video anyway 😊

I love hot press paper, but it isn’t the easiest paper to use. Arches is one of my favorites. Looks like you’re using Cotman watercolors? I find the better water color paints may give you a better result. Also, by letting the paints dry naturally is best. I’ll now finish watching the painting process. ClaudiaSJI

I'm glad to hear that. Yes, I think Cotman is Windsor and Newton. I will definitely keep experimenting with it and see what works best for how I apply colors. Thank you for your comment!

@@_bettina_fernandez_ best of luck with the papers! For me the smell is off putting but I try and keep going. After the initial water application you will find that the smell is less. I paint with a fair amount of water and actually LIKE that it doesn’t immediately sink into the paper. This allows me to take the paint off or modify the colors a bit more. We all have our own”style” and likes and dislikes so it’s fine that you’re not an Arches fan. What you do is super cool and I’m enjoying watching you a lot. For me the surface you use is THE most important thing. You can apply paint with anything, and many things will provide a color or tone, but the surfaces you use will make or break many art pieces! Thanks for sharing your art process with us all! ClaudiaSJI

I love Miss Betsi too! Interestingly I found you first, fell in love with your doodle style, then found Betsi. Now, I try to incorporate both of your styles when I'm doodling. I think they are both so unique and fascinating. I will say I prefer your "looser" style of laying down the background color. I've tried doing that too but just seem to end up with mud! But I think you will never be friends again with arches. Nevertheless there is no reason to keep a obviously damaged or somekind wrong paper. What did you decide is your favorite paper to use. I’ve been using arches cold press & haven’t noticed a smell. So perhaps something to do with it being cold press❓. So far the only thing I dislike about the Arches is that it warps & is difficult to get it flat again.

My all time favorite is the Bee paper, but so far I have only found it in one size. Granted, I haven't looked very hard either😆 My second favorite would have to be the Baohong, but I like to work on the smoother back side. This one can take loads of water, which works well for me. Both of these are cold pressed. The Hahnemühle and the stinky Arches are the first hit pressed ones I've used so far. I'll keep exploring, but I probably won't be buying any more Arches, sadly.

Never had any smells coming out of any of my Arches papers, regardless of the finish, size, or presentation and I've been using them for over 25 years. All Arches watercolor papers are (animal) gelatin-sized and that shouldn't impact the smell in any way as it is clear and odorless. I'm thinking is very possible you bought a fake.
