This time the American Viscountess, Julie Montagu visits Scone Palace in Scotland - the ceremonial site where Scottish Kings were crowned. In 1803 the medieval house was transformed into the splendid Gothic palace we see today. And for over 400 years Scone Palace has been the family home of the Earls of Mansfield. Julie was given an exclusive tour of the historic interiors by Sophy, The Countess of Mansfield and William, Viscount Stormont;, including the rooms where Queen Victoria stayed during her visit of 1842 and where the winter sport of curling was played. Scone Palace is steeped in Royal History - Julie sees the exquisite bedhanging embroidered by Mary, Queen of Scots and her ladies in 1567 during captivity at Lochleven Castle. And takes a walk in the gardens to see the trees planted by royalty for over 500 years - including two trees planted by Queen Elizabeth II and one by King Charles III in 2010. The crowning glory of Scone Palace is the moot hill where Scottish Kings were crowned.
Join Julie for this first instalment of her visit to Scone Palace.

What an amazing Castle Julie!!! Thank you for the information imparted about this historic place. I am a descendant of The Stewarts of Bute yet 'we' use the spelling of Stuart; when that was changed by my ancestors I have no idea but that is my middle name coming from this great source. Our seat is Mount Stuart on the Island of Bute.

Beautiful place 😎 I think I'm more impressed by the grounds than inside haha.
I'm in Far North Queensland at the moment and took a trip to a town called Ingham last weekend. Your family is also remembered there through their sponsorship of Captain Cook's voyage down the east coast of Australia. There's quite a few Himchinbrooke (they got the spelling wrong lol) things- a hotel in the Main Street, streets, a port etc and the largest island National park in Australia that's offshore from there. Was cool seeing it as a viewer of your channels.

I was thrilled to see the Douglas fir. I was born, bred and live in the Pacific Northwest (USA) surrounded by Douglas firs all my life, sometimes in my home at Xmas. Knew they were discovered by and named for David Douglas and that he was a Scottish botanist. Didn't know he was born and raised at Scone and started his career there. So glad he was able to bring a Douglas fir seed back and plant it at Scone! Merges my Scottish heritage too-- among others, I have direct Moray/Murray and Douglas ancestors-- rabid admirer of the Jacobites, the Jacobite Murrays, etc., love the story of Isabella MacDuff racing to crown The Bruce on behalf of her brother/family tradition (not included here), and especially liked personal enthusiasm in presenting stories of the estate, the items displayed, the rooms by the Countess and Lord Stormont. Their love for Scone shines. I saw the Stone of Scone with my own eyes under the Coronation throne in 1978 at Westminster Abbey and am so happy it's where it belongs at Scone. I wish my visit to Scotland back then had included Scone. I smell the fresh scent of Douglas fir. 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

Thank you so much for visiting Scone Castle, although I would never have realised it was pronounced this way as in Australia we say Scon Not scoon or scone as in cone. My grandmother was English from Brighton & made the most yummiest of scon(e)s & cooked with a fuel stove. I can't make a successful one at all as mine always came out like concrete blocks, no matter how carefully I followed the experts!! My pastry is also like concrete, you scrape the topping off & play Frisbee with the base!! However, I could make an excellent sponge which were my favourites anyway. I absolutely loved the history in this place. I am a McDonald on my grandfather's side of the family tree. However, I have more Northern Irish in me than the rest of my heritage put together. 🤣

Hi Julie and team. Just finished watching; always watch on my TV so unable to comment, but had to log-in to say, this was one of my favorite episodes. Love how slow and detailed the tour was and the family is so nice. Each time watching a show I want so badly to fly over and tour. Someday, hopefully God will open a door for me to fly over. One other comment, the Doug fir! Wow, loved the story and what an interesting way it’s growing. Love Doug fir; I’m in Portland, Oregon, and they grow here like weeds-have four huge ones (would take two people to hug one) in my back yard. Plus the story of all the trees was so fun to hear. Trees are amazing for how long they live, and knowing who planted them can be a bit mind blowing. Anyway, I’m a newer fan, quietly following your work, and am so glad I fell upon your channels. Thank you for your work in sharing these historic homes with all of us around the world. Would love to meet you someday. Can’t wait to see more of this beautiful castle/home. Amy

Yes, a very beautiful place with a rich history going way back in time. Its good to hear the comments from Lady Mansfield about the stone of destiny, its a much held belief in Scotland that the stone of destiny has never left Scotland. It was supposed to be Jacobs pillow, from the biblical stories, and was a black stone with mysterious carvings. The stone that Edward I stole from Scone in 1296 was a block of locally quarried red sandstone, and the monks let them take it with no opposition, that should answer the question of was it real or not. One of the parallel events at this time was that Edward I also stole all of the royal records from Scotland that the monks held and the ship that was carrying these records down to London sank with the loss of all of the historical documents.
