    Thanks for the upgrade vid on this old reliable laptop. After this great upgrade, I was considering upgrading from a single 8GB 2xR8 SODIMM to add a second and curious what the resulting performance might be. A cool video would be if you did some real-world performance testing with both SODIMMs and a single SODIMM. Anyway, thanks for this info about the ability to swap out the WWAN card for an mSATA drive !

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
      I would consider some testing, but if you have a single 8GB stick in there now, I pretty much can't recommend against adding more if you think you could use it. Used on eBay you're looking at about $15 and new on Amazon the highest seems to be about $45. Once the upgrades get down to the cost of a pizza, it's hard to justify against them even if the improvements are negligible in 95% of cases (which I don't know for sure and am just saying as an example).
      Since I use mine for video work, I use all the RAM it can take.

    • @fiveangle
      @fiveangle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBrokenLife it's used just for Virtual DJ and 8GB is more than ample RAM for that purpose. What I was curious about was if it improves actual CPU/RAM number crunching performance at all, because with the new STEMS feature of VDJ 2021, pre-processing audio tracks to separate out the individual instruments takes a loooong time. If tossing another stick in can improve track processing performance 15-20% then I'd do it, but less than that, I probably need to just bite the bullet and buy a new system. I can't find anything comparing the 4th-gen mobile Intel systems on dual-rank single-channel vs dual-rank (or even single-rank) dual-channel mode. Regardless, love the dual storage option now, so thanks !

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fiveangle That's such a specific task that even if I could draw a conclusion in either direction, I wouldn't be able to know that it would apply for you.
      You could always take the simple approach and open a task manager and watch the performance tab while those activities are processing? I suspect it's more CPU limited than anything.

    • @fiveangle
      @fiveangle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBrokenLife haha, it's a "specific task" only in that I cited what I'm doing, but the general improvement in task completion time in dual-channel vs single-channel for desktop chipsets is well known so this isn't related only to virtual dj. "CPU-limited" includes any bottleneck in moving the operations to-from main memory. Unless a CPU is running a synthetic cache-resident operation like "time to run a goggleprime" then it's gotta move that data in and out to somewhere, and that's all the reason for opting for dual vs single channel memory. "CPU limited" is really synonymous with "CPU-and-memory-IO-limited."
      I'll probably just buy the memory and check general performance for Intel 4th gen mobile myself. If it doesn't improve, at least should be easier to sell with 16gb :)

    Got to be said, some of the Inspiron range were made so well - not from a keyboard tapping user point of view, but for getting to the main stuff ...
    Oh SO easy.
    My other computer is an Emachines e430.
    It's horrible

      The old E series Dell laptops are excellent machines. I wish they would build them like that again, but I think those days are behind us.

    • @parasiteunit
      @parasiteunit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBrokenLife sadly, it's other technical advancement that changed the game... We used to need a 2.5 inch HDD bay... We used to need a bay big enough to have a CD/BLU ray ROM drive.
      Both of these things are now, due to MSATA, m3 and every type of compact solid state drive you can think of, obsolete.
      So, the chassis no longer needs to have the space for them.
      The need for laptops to be these featherweight machines made out of 90% plastic, the screen and the weight of the screws using a further 8% of the mass... Has become almost the agreed standard.
      The need for them to be bullet proof has also gone, as they're now regarded as temporary systems from both an OS and a physical POV.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@parasiteunit I can deal with most of that. I would just like one engineered well enough that a simple dusting isn't a 3 hour ordeal. You can find a video on my channel of me dusting out a ZBook and the bottom plate of that thing was held on with like 17 screws or something insane. It would have actually been a cost reduction to design it like my old E series with a single screw and a slightly more complicated bottom panel.
      I would also like to see the return of actual docks and not Thunderbolt port replicators. That comes at a weight and cost penalty though so I'm positive that is gone forever. I just find the actual docks to be so much easier to deal with and more consistent in operation.

      @@TheBrokenLife oh yeah, don't get me wrong - there's been issues with over engineering too....
      The old Atari ST - just to get to the memory to ensure they were housed okay if it started going AWOL...
      Oh man, more screws than a brothel!
      but yeah - a laptop that used light materials *and* easy to service...
      Oddly enough, just did a strip down of a Vostro 3300. Compared to the E6410... Getting to anything, aside from memory and the HD bay....
      Layer after layer urrg!

      @@parasiteunit "Urrg", indeed. I specifically sought out the E6410 after doing a few other pretty involved repairs on other laptops and I swore them off for life. My E7440 is the closest I get to a modern laptop and I'm hoping it has about 10 more years in it for just general computery things. I'm kinda hoping after that I won't have a use for a laptop anymore. We shall see!

      Yeah... Not something I feel the most comfortable with most of the time and until just then, having started building PCs around 1994, I've never needed to. I skipped through that video and it doesn't really look like he _needed_ to either. I'm not sure what goal he was trying to achieve by doing so, but, I did just skim.
      To each their own and all of that, but I wanted to make sure it was something I personally am not suggesting to my viewers since I'm not comfortable doing it myself. I'd never ask or suggest any of you to do anything I wouldn't, or haven't, done.
      That said, dousing electronics with isopropyl alcohol has never effected anything I've ever worked on and would have given him the same result he was after (which just looked like deep dust removal?). I've been doing that for years and years...
