In all honesty, as a trombone, when I was in middle school we were told to empty it over the trash but as we got older, deadlines got closer and we had harder music, we just started emptying them on the floor lol. We weren't offered an alternative so that's what happened to not waste so much time trying to empty them. Lol, definitely was hard getting used too and still think it's a bit gross.

We also had two oboes, one for each of our bands, I tried to convince them to let me play piccolo but apparently I “wasn’t good enough” (despite being one of the best in my section and the only one who actually had someone who was able to teach me how to play. The French horns in my band never put our spit in a trash can, but we really should. For those who don’t know: the French horn can carry a LOT of spit before you can hear it due to the sheer size and swirly-ness of the instrument. Also, since there are a LOT of slides on the horn, it’s an absolute nightmare to find spit, even in a single horn. French horns DO have spit valves, but they rarely collect even half of the amount that’s in the horn, so you need to spin the horn, check the main tuning slides, and if there’s none in there, take out all of the slides and see which one is being such an a**hole.
