I love a high reving small block that's what I loved about my DZ 302 all it takes is a Lil compression forged crank decent rods and the right cam and good heads 500 hp is easy to make.
I’m literally in the same boat with my 67 camaro. Everybody keeps telling me that I’m an idiot for wanting to build a 327 over a 350 and I’m also keeping the same thought in mind as for wanting to use the car for everything. Can’t wait to see you get the corvette driving!
We did 550hp on one with AFR 195cc race eliminators and a solid roller Comp cam, could have done more with a bigger cam but we feel it's has the best power for it's size and still be tractable.
I built mine with a small journal crank and a 560 lift hydraulic roller and pro magnum roller rockers. It was freaking awsome. Victor Junior and 750 comp AFB. Grumpy would be proud of all of us ! I used TRW forged pistons in the 90s. Better stuff out there now but zero decked and 8,000 rpm with a 10 inch converter it launched my two tons 1.8 0 to 60 ft.
I'm a Ford guy. Picked up a small journal 327 bored 60 over for free with crank. Bought from a neighbor aluminum heads, victor jr intake, scorpion rockers, 550 lift solid cam and lifters. MSD box and coil for $1,500 bucks. Need a couple of rods to put the engine together. An 800 dp on the shelf. Cost $850 to put it on a dyno. Wish it didn't cost that much.
@@samrotheray5805 build it ? First I have to get rid of the 454, 390, 350, 351C, 351W and 305 I have already rebuilt in the garage too has room for it. I hope to find some full floating rods in the mean time.
I LOVE IT! SBC goodness My last SBC in my MGB was a 358ci, aluminum rod, 13+ comp., Massively ported Chevy 492 angle plug heads/port matched Strip Dominator intake, .640" lift solid roller cammed, little beast, it LOVED 8000+rpm until it didn't (broke a couple roller lifters and killed it) (engine came out of a friends '72 Chevelle racecar that ran 10.20s @ 128mph with it). Was BIG FUN in my 2350lb., custom chassis&suspension MGB.
Nice I have a 60 over 427 so it's a 439 it makes really good power I wanna build a 302 screamer. I had one many years ago they just cost way more to build nowadays my afr heads cost more then my whole small block I built back in the 70s
This is the first video I've seen that is close to my .40 over 1967 327 I had in my 68 Chevelle back in 1981. Being 22 at the time you KNOW it saw redine every day for almost 2 years. Shifting at around 8 grand happened every day and Id give most anything to have had it dynoed back then. But the sound and way it carried gave me memory goosebumps. It stopped making HP around 8500 because of valve float is my guess now. over45 years later.
Finally some one has built a 500 horse 327 I have similar built motor steal crank bored over 30 all forged parts & 202 camel back heads cam is 465 lift forgot rest of spects built in 2008 with 8 thousand miles
Funny. I have a 65 300hp 327. I was told the small journal cranks are all forged . Its getting tired . Was bored 30 over in the 70s and oil pressures down a little. Its already 30 over. Can you borr 40 over. I would like to keep the short block and put better rods etc. I already jave brodix Ik180s on it and performer rpm. Has old GM 30 30 cam in it that was put in in the mid 70s
I built a 331 very similar to this in the 80s. Obviously didn't have AFR heads....but they were very good heads...all the tricks done to it. I was planning on installing this into a 65 Nova...straight axle...glass front...doors..deck lid. All the goodies. The I got a wild idea and joined the military. Life happen and over time...the car and everything else was sold. I was married and then divorced and....well...I lost it. Never fired it up. This has always bothered me. I was kinda hoping for about 450...475 horsepower. The little Nova would have been a screamer.
Compression and rpm, that how you make hp with small cid. With a small .555 lift cam i would have said less than 500hp. I still think you need more cam with those heads. But results are dam good.
Mitch, I really like what you do. The only thing I would have changed on that engine is the solid lifter cam. Just more maintenance lashing valves. But I'm an old fart! Is it worth the power gain? Obviously for you it is. Well done, nice work, good craftsmanship. Keep it up, I really enjoy your channel. Good smart content.
I liked the manly solid roller cam haha. Hopefully with the roller it won’t need too much adjustment but I’ll definitely have to check it more often. Thanks I appreciate it! I have fun making the videos.
I would have went with a 780 carb ,so what size are the valves hard to guess the horse power with out knowing the size of the valves AFR makes great heads
When I race at Fremont raceway with my 64 Chevy || I used to shift it at 6800 used to leave the line at about 4,500 I basically ran low 12s 4-11 with a modified four-speed T-10 could have did better if I had bigger headers. The modifications on the transmission people thought I had an automatic. 😁
Nice motor. Honestly you could have used a tick more cam to easily acheive those numbers. Those big 210's were carrying it up on the top end. Great job!
Thanks Chris I appreciate it! I'm actually glad I didn't go any bigger on the cam. It sounded radical and made good power. With the rear gear that was in the car and the close ratio muncie it liked to chug at slow speeds. The car just wanted to go haha.
Yep it has a stock gm forged crank. She rips haha. The car is long gone but I have an even more wicked Vette to put it in. That car will be coming together in the spring.
Great set up I got my 327 in the garage tore apart trying to figure out what way to go lots of people say make it a 383 but always love the old school 327 if I can get close to the 500 hp all is good with that. You said you had a build sheet would like to get my hands on it.
Is it a small journal or large journal ? My 1967 is a small journal 327 with factory GM forged crankshaft and it has the oil dragger tube vent with the baffle in the lifter valley. I noticed your block is different than mine inside the timing cover area .
They mentioned like 30 pulls, they should have nailed the ignition timing and jetting. The chamber on those AFRs is pretty efficient, they have good mixture motion and those guys probably decked it for good quench, the domes on the other hand!?!
Hell yeah!! It sounded even better in the car. It basically had wide open 3” side pipes. It definitely demanded everyone’s attention at the car shows haha.
One of the best engines Chevrolet ever made! It's ironic that GM made a "modern" version of the 327 in the 5.3L LS engine (which makes good power too!)
That's what I got in both of my 66 Chevelle SS cars , one 327 makes 450hp and the other makes 475hp , Both have Lakewood Blow proof bellhousing and 4 speed Trans with 12 bolt posi , In 2009 I got it to scream to the Moon at 11,000rpm I did this twice and haven't done it since
Great combo, only the intake won't feed those heads. That's an old school intake on heads that needs more intake. The vic Jr was made for old double hump heads, because there wasn't much around for aftermarket heads back then.
@inscoredbz I wouldn't say that at all, the Victor Jr is probably a pretty good choice for a 210 runner. Over a 220 i'd look into a Super Vic or equivalent imo. Have you seen the intake testing Eric Weingartner has done on youtube? The Victor Jr was yielding the best numbers on 200-215cc heads. Maybe there is something magic about the specific intake he used idk but it's pretty amazing when you see the rest of the field and the mule was a 406. I felt the 327 here left some on the table, maybe cam specs, cam timing or valve springs, something and while it didn't exactly lay over it didnt run out up there like it should. I figured with the head flow of those AFRs it would see high 5xx range near 6, I didn't hear a lot of info, fuel, timing, jetting none was mentioned. I wonder if the 195s mightve had better average numbers the way it was setup, and for multi purpose events mightve felt better in the driver's seat.
I've got my hands on a 302 block that got left for dust I guess around the time of the second gen lt1and it ended up in our block wall we have an old committed block and parts area. I'm talking 8 blocks and extra parts
I never got the opportunity to run the car on any track. I sold the body and took the whole car apart. The engine is going in a 67 RS/SS Camaro. But I’m sure that car would have done well in the 1/4. It would have been a blast.
Mitch you are going to have to change the name Misfit to Asphalt Schredder. Also put rear tires on your Christmas list, you're going to need them. Great videos. Thanks!
Haha this thing would dig trenches if you let it lol. This thing is going to eat rear tires. I don’t know if I want it to hook or not. Either way it’s going to be a hand full lol.
@@MidYearMitch You gotta let it rip. If your not sure of how it will handle find a small airport that will let you test it out. I'm very impressed it didn't grenade on the dyno. Be safe. But yes hook them up. What is your differential ratio?

I am so very impressed with your engine build, Mitch... KILLER for sure! Seeing yours, I might just pull the 327 on my recently acquired C2 and copy yours (with slightly more emphasis on the low end power). All I really care about is leaving a little rubber between stoplights. One question tho.... What type fuel are you going to run? I'm running both my 11:1 compression vettes on 91-93 octane pump gas now w/ no pinging.
Thanks Dr Lee. I’m really happy with this combination. Dan built a baaaaad 327. If you want the specs I can send them to you. I have the full parts list. Email me at midyearmitch@gmail.com and I can send it to you. If you put a good air gap dual plane intake on it that will bring a lot of low end power back. You could also swap the cam out for one that favors a lower rpm range. Dan said run the highest pump octane you can for cruising. If I am going to put a lot of load on it he said to run over 100 octane or throw octane booster in it to bring it over 100.

Sure thing Dan thanks! Yeah this 327 loves the RPM. No I’m keeping the 750 carb. The 850 made better top end but it will probably drive better and have better part throttle response with the 750.
Awesome man!!! How much would you say for this package? Already have the 4b main, 327, w original fuelie heads. Been waiting years and years to do this to my old Caprice. From what I understand, this motor is stock with 400 lbs torque. Apparently, by the recall torque cables from gm, it is the same as the vette motor. Any help would be nuch appreciated. If you could possibly map out the costs with parts that would be amazingly helpful.
I have a 67 Camaro with a 327, would a Edelbrock 1551 E-Force Supercharger Kit make sense? The description claims it makes over 500 hp with 5 pounds of boost, I haven’t found any videos to support this though.
I have almost the same engine,, how did you fix the oil return problems ? Mine has an 8 qrt oil pan and at the finish line I lost oil pressure, all the oil was in the top of engine and oil pump started to suck air bouncing oil pressure. Just curious , my shirt point was 7500 and the finish line rpm was about the same.

Hey Mitch, I'd like your engine specs too. Looks like you used an original small-journal 2-bolt block for the build? I've got a great 355 in my '64 race car right now, but it's not a legal engine and I need to build a 331. As for learning to drive these things, come on down to the Dallas area. I'm a member (and instructor) out at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson. Happy to learn ya'. On Hoosier bias-plies, they are actually easy to drive fast. Very communicative and good handling.
If you send me an email at midyearmitch@gmail.com I’ll hook you up with all my specs. It’s an original 67 Vette small journal 2 bolt 327 block. It has a stock forged gm crank also. That sounds like a great combo I’m sure that’s a lot of fun. I wanted to build a 331 to stay legal for those kinds of classes. I actually need to take a training in Houston Texas at some point either this year or next year. Maybe we can try and coordinate something. I would love to hit the track and pick up tips. That would be a ton of fun! I would definitely be game for that. Thank you for the offer!
@@MidYearMitch One more thing Mitch why did you not use the old-school 64 cc camel hump heads What made you decide to go with these heads I can see you paid over four grand for both of them

It doesn’t have the bass but it definitely screams like a top fuel car
Gawwww dang!! Now I want to put my ‘67 327 block together with a lot of compression and a lot of cam!!!!
Hell yeah brother!!!
I love a high reving small block that's what I loved about my DZ 302 all it takes is a Lil compression forged crank decent rods and the right cam and good heads 500 hp is easy to make.
I have a 1966 327 small journal and, I think, I'm going to build it now!!! 😁
Awesome!! Good luck with your build! This engine was a ton of fun to rip around.
I’m literally in the same boat with my 67 camaro. Everybody keeps telling me that I’m an idiot for wanting to build a 327 over a 350 and I’m also keeping the same thought in mind as for wanting to use the car for everything. Can’t wait to see you get the corvette driving!
I destroaked a 350 4 bolt main , with .030 over 327 pistons , still need to pick a cam and lifters
As a every day driver I would go with a 350/383 but that's just me ,why work an engine so hard if you don't have too
Sweet sounding 327! It really sounded like it wanted more throttle.
Thanks! That engine is an animal.
It DOES want it!
Awesome build. I'm building a 13.1 327 to run on e85. Gives me ambition to keep on it. Yours sounds great. Nice project 👌
@@jesse75 Nice. Sounds like it has some good parts.
Build it.
@@jesse75 It might change your mind about being a Ford guy. Lol. I'm kidding. Ford has made some very stout power plants.
@@samrotheray5805 build it ? First I have to get rid of the 454, 390, 350, 351C, 351W and 305 I have already rebuilt in the garage too has room for it.
I hope to find some full floating rods in the mean time.
Nice. Sounds like you have some great projects. My 327 has gone to the back burner again. Lol. My son and I are building a 406 for his 74 k20.
My favorite motor and so for my favorite video to watch. Thanks a lot
I heve a 331 for my 69 nova. cant wait to see it in.
That is a great build! I still miss my 65 chevelle with 327, fueler heads, etc. sounds very fine!
Nice I have a 60 over 427 so it's a 439 it makes really good power I wanna build a 302 screamer. I had one many years ago they just cost way more to build nowadays my afr heads cost more then my whole small block I built back in the 70s
Great engine build mate. Good video too. Good luck
Great presentation 👏🏼 .
This thing is gonna run great !!
Oh yeah it wants to go!
Love this 327 build I loved my 365 HP 1964 327 in my 64 Vert, it was dog at low RPM but boy you open it up and it will pull.
D
the other advantage you have it the '67 is a small journal crank, that's what really allows you to wind the piss out of it.
283 crank if you're ever building one.
It's crazy how much difference this carb makes extra and sounds non the less
Bore it 60 over lol
@ShaunRuble I heard 40 is max of I can . Otherwise I need a new block if I can find a small journal one.
Awesome video most people are taking about their 355 or 383 stroker.
NICE !
CLASSIC BEAUTY!
Have you tried a dual carb tunnel ram on something like this amazing 327.
Love a high winding 327; have one in a ‘56 out of a ‘67 vette as well; not touching 500 like yours though. Nice build!
Nice build, I think I may try that! 👍
Thanks Richard. That engine was a ton of fun!
Very, very, very impressive. I was hoping for you to make 520hp and torque I figured at about 425. Glad you broke 500.
Thanks! Rhodes performance knows how to build a good engine.
And it passed 500 hp just shy of 7,000. Typically that's where most 350s make 500 hp. A decade ago anyway.
I luv 283 an 327 s they are awesome
Really nice work enjoyed the video can I ask you what cam you used I understand if you don’t want to give that information out.
Cool engine with hot HP.
Thanks David. I’m excited to hear it in the car.
absolutely incredible!!!!
I used to run high 12s low 13s at Baylands with a 71 Chevelle and a built small block 350, fun times!
hey like the build alot I have same block . you send all the specs the list of parts and block
if bored
I know this car is long gone, but didn't hear you mention crankshaft. Did it have stock crank?
Yep it has a stock gm forged crank. She rips haha. The car is long gone but I have an even more wicked Vette to put it in. That car will be coming together in the spring.
Great set up I got my 327 in the garage tore apart trying to figure out what way to go lots of people say make it a 383 but always love the old school 327 if I can get close to the 500 hp all is good with that. You said you had a build sheet would like to get my hands on it.
Thanks! I really like the old school screaming 327. It's a good engine. Send me an email at midyearmitch@gmail.com
Id like the build sheet as well I sent a email
Is it a small journal or large journal ? My 1967 is a small journal 327 with factory GM forged crankshaft and it has the oil dragger tube vent with the baffle in the lifter valley. I noticed your block is different than mine inside the timing cover area .
strained a bit down low sbc needs alot of timing lock the distributer and put 38 to 40 deg in it always been a big fan of the 327 or 400
They mentioned like 30 pulls, they should have nailed the ignition timing and jetting. The chamber on those AFRs is pretty efficient, they have good mixture motion and those guys probably decked it for good quench, the domes on the other hand!?!
Man when this things running all out it sounds like a 80s nascar engine
That is sweet 327 that's what I would like to build for my 66 chevelle
That's what I got in both of my 66 Chevelle SS cars , one 327 makes 450hp and the other makes 475hp ,
Both have Lakewood Blow proof bellhousing and 4 speed Trans with 12 bolt posi ,
In 2009 I got it to scream to the Moon at 11,000rpm
I did this twice and haven't done it since
If you really want a 327 ,
A 307 is actually a 283 block with a 327 crank ,
The DZ 302 is a 327 block with a 283 crank
Great combo, only the intake won't feed those heads. That's an old school intake on heads that needs more intake. The vic Jr was made for old double hump heads, because there wasn't much around for aftermarket heads back then.
I'm sure it has gone through many updates over the years
@@ChinzySpecials actually it's the same as it was 35 yrs ago. But it still works.
I laughed when he said maaan this thing just carries it out!
I've got my hands on a 302 block that got left for dust I guess around the time of the second gen lt1and it ended up in our block wall we have an old committed block and parts area. I'm talking 8 blocks and extra parts
Did you ever run it in the quarter and if you did what did it run? 😀
@@MidYearMitch
You gotta let it rip. If your not sure of how it will handle find a small airport that will let you test it out. I'm very impressed it didn't grenade on the dyno. Be safe. But yes hook them up. What is your differential ratio?
i would like to find a vette, C2, C3 or whatever i am do not need a split window although could convert one i suppose. shall put in a cooL little engine with a 4 or 5 speed manuaL or 4 speed auto.
Best of luck finding a car! There are plenty of C3’s out there that need some love. That would be a fun car!
@@MidYearMitch I tried to look for your email but it wasn’t popping up. Wanted to know if you could email me the part list for the build. I have a 79 Camaro with a 327 that I want to rebuild for my first build
@@MidYearMitch My 359C has Trick Flow 225cc heads. 11:1 compression. cam is a Bullet solid flat 239/243 .611/.605 lift with 107 ICL Made 521hp@6300/453tq@5600 in a 110 degree shop on engine dyno - out of box 750 Mighty Demon carb - no carb spacer. I drag race it. My experience with the pump fuel is it is trash for 11:1 compression. It makes my engine run hotter, it stinks and just sucks and I have 93 on tap here. I only run VP110 now. It will run on 93 but its not as happy.
If I were you and hearing you want to drive it on the street and stuff - it would be in your best interest to run E85. Best all around for cost, cooling and power - just a suggestion.
Nice, Sir.
Thanks!
Where did you get those chrome Valve covers? I need some for my 327!
Really great video Mitch. Thanks for bringing this to us!
Those 327s could really wind!
Are you going with the 850cfm then?
Sure thing Dan thanks! Yeah this 327 loves the RPM. No I’m keeping the 750 carb. The 850 made better top end but it will probably drive better and have better part throttle response with the 750.
8000 rpms, drooling here
Hey man looks awesome! I have a question. What compression are you running and are you running 91?
Thanks I appreciate it! It had 11.2-1 compression. I ran 93 in it and dumped octane booster in it. It ran strong with that.
nice job sonny jim. dontbmind if i duplicate this mouse
Just curious , my shirt point was 7500 and the finish line rpm was about the same.
list the set up, sick engine
Are you running the stock length rod of 5.7 ??
What crank and rods did you go with?
Man that mouse didnt wake up until 6000 but then hang and buzz wow!
She’s a screamer!! That engine ripped when it was in the car. It wanted to go.
Where’s the update on the road? I have this same setup just a bit different in parts And everything.
I’ll share the link in this comment below. I built the car a couple years ago then sold the body and chassis. I still have the engine and I’m building another Vette for it to go in this year.

Thats why gm put a 283 crank in a 327 block to make the 302 for trans am racing . Anybody can do it if they want to . Nothing sweeter than the sound of a high winding sbc in the fall. Lol
@@MidYearMitch One more thing Mitch why did you not use the old-school 64 cc camel hump heads What made you decide to go with these heads I can see you paid over four grand for both of them
@port nut ok
What gas did you run in this combo?
I wish I was 19 again 🙏
What type of heads did you go with. I am in the rebuild stage of my 65 el camino and I'm thinking Dart aluminum heads perhaps. I am chasing that 500hp range as well. If you have any specs by all means I'm all ears. Great build my friend.
Hi Zachary. I used AFR 210cc heads. They were race ported. They weren't cheap but they made good power easy. Send me an email at midyearmitch@gmail.com and I can send you the spec sheets. This thing made 505hp and it was a happy engine. Thanks it was a ripper.
