    I for one rarely buy new games anymore for the simple reason that I know I can probably buy the game in a month or so for half the price. I been screwed so many times in the past that I have learned my lesson. I'm impervious to hype now. Also need to see at least 4 or 5 reviews before I even consider buying it on sale

    • @gavfitzpatrick
      @gavfitzpatrick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yep it can be really hard sometime's to hold back but its well worth it in the end and you are never disappointed because from just watching you tubes ect you know exactly what your getting. the only 2 full price games I bought last year were DOOM and FFXV and they were worth the asking price in my opinion. other years I would have bought games like Mafia 3 and been so pissed off.

      But even reviews are bullshit nowadays. Legally, companies cannot buy out review scores, but they can buy up ad revenue on review sites, which prompt the critics to give it a better score. Famous examples are IGN and Gamespot

      gav_fitzpatrick Couple of people I know would get a cracked copy firs. If they love the game, they wouldn't mind buying it full price though they run into some issues a couple of times.

    52 year old gamer. My assessment (for what it is worth) on new release sales drops , 1) pricing drops within weeks, no incentive to buy new, especially for people not interested in on line multiplayer, 2) No innovation, FPS, open world fetch and quest, and sports titles, 3) single player campaigns either dont exist or pitifully short, no replay ability, 4) no games for at home multiplayer with bots, 5) art direction falls secondary to "best graphics at release" making the graphic focused games dated very quickly, 6) digital titles cost more than physical discs unlike Amazon model for books, 7) obsession with terrible FOV first person games, totally unrealistic FOV, as no one walks around only able to see their hands. In real life you can see and are aware of your body without having to move your head around (i.e. In FPS games you have to move your head to see down), 7) no nostalgia except for Nintendo games, 8) terrible promotion of indie games, that is enough for now

      I don't have a problem paying for extra content for a game, if that cost is justified. Skyrim DLC, Witcher 3 DLC, Fallout DLC, are all very good, very large, covering several more hours of content. But to charge me an extra 50 to 60 dollars for some more fuckin', maps, fuck you Call of Duty.

      @Dylan Abela Really? How many PS2 games do you remember being released with catastrophic glitches? I don't remember a single one. Don't get me wrong, a single slightly annoying glitch or two in one out of six games...maybe, but nothing like the shite we've been handed in the last several years. I will NEVER preorder or buy a brand new game ever again because I have been forced to wait for three or more patches before the damn things are even half worth playing.

    I didn't stop buying games, I just refuse to pay $79.99 for an incomplete game. Also, time to bring back demos and do away with pre-orders and season passes. You wouldn't buy a car solely based on review footage, right? You'd want to take it for a test drive. Sorry publishers, but the gig is up.

      I have no idea what people see in that game-I was utterly disgusted at the controls, combat, aimless story and mmorpg-esque padding. Glad I was able to try it out before following hype and 'reviews'-had enough of that bullshit when I went to the castle with the black haired chick.
      I would have been so pissed if I bought it on steam-took more than two hours to appropriately assess the game and wouldn't be able to get a refund.

      Devs, and publishers even more so. This industry is mostly a money-grubbing joke anymore. So many ridiculous concepts not present in other industries. Paid demos called early access, cosmetic DLCs. Would love to see the movie industry selling early access tickets with greenscreen showings instead of finished CGI effects. And pay extra to see certain content in movies. Want to see the Hulk in hulk form in the next Avengers movie? Only if you pay for the Hulk CGI DLC /facepalm.

    Two words: Split Screen.
    Its like there has been a concerted effort to kill the joy of gaming physically together with your friends. Whats up with everything being massively online multiplayer, with me having to shut off the mic, and play against strangers who speak another language?
    There aren't even many good games that you can play together in a room on separate screens and consoles. There are tired, tired FPS that really aren't designed with many people who are actually in the same room. Who cares about trophies, I want to humiliate my friends in the flesh! Remember throwing controllers at each other? Extra hardware sales! Its brilliant!
    This lack of soul sucks the joy out of gaming. Most gamers began by playing with a wide variety of games with several characters on the same screen (Gauntlet, Bomberman, Bubble Bobble, Mariokart, Starfox, NHL '97 etc etc etc). This is your demographic, gaming industry! People in their late 20's to mid 30's. They want that experience back. TVs are larger than ever. We all have our own living rooms. Connect the dots!
    Its bad when I don't even know the term for these games, as a whole. Games where people actually get together. These games are the most fun. I truly miss the experience of gaming together with friends in the living room. Bring that back, get the sales.
    Schmitty
    Canada
    PS I know that this is a bit long winded, so edit it down as you will. I want to be on the show! I'll send some "quid" for the honour, whatever that is...

    I bought Doom first, and it was an awesome game. Then I bought No man's Sky, Call of Duty, and Mafia 3 back to back. I lost my appetite to play games after that. But then Dishonored 2 hit stores, Bought it thinking it was Bethesda, what could go wrong (I had such good Doom experience), boy was I wrong. Dishonored 2 was marred with frame rate drops, and I have a GTX 1070. ZERO CONFIDENCE.

    It's been a bad year. More and more developers are trying to get greedy and the Early Access system on Steam, which sounded like a great idea, is being abused and milked by bad developers who dump "shovelware" onto it and then run away from their games when they stop making money. This leaves a foul taste in the mouth of anyone scammed this way. The fiasco with Studio Wildcard being allowed to release a paid DLC (pay-to-win at that) when their game is still in Early Access makes the whole Early Access system into a joke. Valve is just interested in money, not in protecting their customers from shady abuses like this.
    "AAA" developers release crappy games that are buggy, incomplete and just a vehicle to push microtransactions and rely on DLC to "fix" it after the fact. Then there is false advertising, like with The Division and more blatantly with No Man's Sky.
    Then there's this e-sports push to try to make every game an e-sport which only kids hopped up on Adderall and G Fuel or Red Bull can play. Nevermind that many gamers are in their 30s or older. I no longer buy multi-player shooters, or certain other multi-player games, like the upcoming For Honor, for this reason.
    Then there's the fact that there is just an oversaturation of games. People only have a limited amount of free time to play games. I have a ton of games in my Steam/GOG libraries that I haven't even played, much less finished. There are too many companies trying to pump out too many games for anyone to be able to keep up with them all.

    • @tokiwartooth4404
      @tokiwartooth4404 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really don't understand the craze of paying for what used to be shareware demos? Sometimes paying full price. Only in this insane industry. Early access = Devs and publishers getting early access to consumers wallets. You want to talk Valve? How about game devs/pubs having Steam moderator privileges on their own games. So they can delete posts concerning criticism, bug reports, etc. The slightest amount of what could be seen as negative feedback = possible ban. So many obvious phony reviews as well. Notable mention to 2K games for having numerous moderators working around the clock to silence any amount of consumer feedback that does not praise their over-priced games.

    • @miguelpereira9859
      @miguelpereira9859 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Toki Wartooth I also don't understand Early Access. Why don't people pay for a game when it's released?

    • @tokiwartooth4404
      @tokiwartooth4404 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel Pereira Even better, wait a year or more until the game is actually finished being developed. Then you can get the whole game for $50 or less. Buying a new game is like buying a new car. Terrible investment where you lose so much immediately with your purchase.

    • @funkymunky7935
      @funkymunky7935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the subject of moderator abuse; Elite Dangerous forums are run by non-devs, but they are such fanboys that they delete and/or lock anything that puts the game in a bad light

    • @tokiwartooth4404
      @tokiwartooth4404 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Funky Munky That's also a frequent problem. Fanboys who get moderator access from the devs or publishers. Steam discussions are a waste of time. It's amazing the lengths people will go to defend.. video games. And questionable business ethics concerning them. Such as those who glorify the concept of cosmetic DLCs :D Only in this industry full of insecure, irresponsible consumers.

I also hate UBISOFT's version of "open world"..tons of cookie cutter tasks to do with a map chock full of icons of boring things to waste time on. "Open world" ubisoft games feel more like walking down a hallway when you start playing them. You guys are so on point with this video its not even funny. It's sad. New games now look so pretty but are so dull to actually play. I have more fun with River City Ransom on my NES than some of the 100 million dollar budget games released now. Tons of reasons for the first time since I was a kid I have lost interest in gaming. The top reasons for me would be:
    1. Games are incomplete or a mess at launch.
    2. You are charged full price or more to play the aforementioned crap content.
    3. On consoles specially your online access is gated for many games, wth!?!?!?
    4. On top of gated online play you are then charged for junk that should have been in the game from the start.
    5. The uniformly great visual quality of many titles has actually made them all look a carbon copy of each other and sorely lacking in anything or anyone to care about in them.
    6. My older consoles filled with complete games and no DLC crap or online garbage to muddle through are still working fine and I tend to gravitate to them when I want to actually enjoy the game for all of its parts not just the looks.
    7. There is too much content across multiple platforms, so much so, that it has become a blinding white sheet I can't peer into so I have tuned out a lot of the gamescape altogether.

      Dcypherman - yeah, the witcher 3 (plus its DLC) was basically a few months where I didn't buy any other games. Then I got addicted to bloodborne and dark souls, so... yeah. I'll buy anything CDPR put out because they've won my loyalty over the years, but anyone else can fuck right off until i've seen the reviews, gameplay videos and player comments. I agree with the video though, consumer confidence in the "big publishers" is super low so instead we're playing games by companies who actually value their fans.

      And a recommendation of mine: If you have Skyrim and want to breathe some life back into it without relying on the special edition, get Enderal. It's a completely free mod that overhauls the game so much it could qualify for an entirely new game.

      Yeah, as I wasn't familiar with the witcher lore, I was hesitant to buy the witcher 3, but I bought it early 2016. BEST decision I made in 2016 concerning gaming. Even at 25 dollars/euros, the season pass is a steal for its content compared to the shite you get sometimes from other game's season passes these days.

    I'm still spending as much on games as before but now it's spread out across many more smaller priced indie games which have regular development contact and updates. Maybe I'm getting old, but I'd rather spend my cash on companies I like and trust, rather than the pretty, re-hashed game which may sound enjoyable at first, but are over hyped, ultimately unsatisfying and pushed on us by money grabbing, greedy corporations. If I see "Season Pass" advertised anywhere, I'm out. Love your videos, keep it up.

    I stopped getting giddy over new games after 2013. That year destroyed my confidence in the gaming industry and it's only gotten worse since then.
    2013 had Rome 2 Total War's shit show of a launch which shattered my faith in Creative Assembly, I haven't bought one of their game's since then. Rome 2 is still the worst total war game to date. The fan base that tried to protect CA from criticism made me sick to my stomach.
    We also had:
    - Sim City 2013(terrible release of a lazy game)
    - Battlefield 4(terrible release, I still don't like that game very much)
    - Diablo 3(horrible release, the game was built entirely around the real money auction house
    I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but you get the idea. The gaming industry has been going down this road for YEARS. It's only getting worse and worse. The only real hope we have of things getting better is if the current AAA industry crashes like it did in the 80's. It took a while but the gaming industry that appeared after the crash was the first real golden age!

      Yo, me too. The use of the word "yo" dates me, I'm told...
      I miss split screen games and playing together in the living room. What happened to that? I thought that was really core to gaming. Like Bomberman, Starfox, NHL, Marikart, Gauntlet... whats up with there being hardly any games a bunch of people can play in the same room? Take away FPS, which require several tvs and consoles (like, ten grand right there for 3-4 people), and what do you have?
      The soul of gaming is throwing a controller at your friends nuts in anger because he beat you three times in a row. I don't like this microphones, massively multiplayer stuff. I don't speak Korean, and I dont want to play against pro gamers. Just give us some living room fun! Rampart! Rampage! Come on!

    I'm pretty happy with late direction this market is heading. Consumers are making smart choices instead of buying a game that's not even out there yet.
    Yeah, sales are down now, but I'm hoping this would nudge companies to do right in long term.
    BTW, you guys need to stop crying for reviewer copy. consumers simply need to wait for good reviews, and companies will worry about their long term reputation if they want sales in this skeptical market.
    the only reason you keep jabbing at this is because you want to maximize your traffic on release date. And this culture of companies handing out backstage pass needs to stop.
    once you start holding grudge against certain company for not giving you a sweetheart deal, your integrity as reviewer is over.

    Gents, you've made some really valid points in the video. The focus has shifted away from small developers creating games for gamers on shoe string budgets. Now it's big investors pushing huge amounts in development and they expect large returns, which means the customer base is bombarded with media based hype and 'specials'. Personally I haven't purchased a new game in the last year preferring instead to wait for a pre-used copy to arrive in my local store, it's cheaper and there's usually been a patch released as well. Keep up the good work chaps!

    hey PGG, great video again, as you asked at end of your video what might be the cause of drop in buying games? here is what i faced bought X com 2 for 60$ which went on sale after few months for 50% off and now is available for 12$ in humble-bundle. i think games are prized too high and at the beginning and come to their real prize after quarter a year if it is not popular. what do you think??

    Folk have finally learned what some of us have known for years - corporates are ruining games with formuliac + exploitive standards, & release games aren't worth the money. It's far better to buy games a year or two after launch, and even then most aren't a patch on the original games which inspired them..

      By the time I learned Titanfall 2 didn't shit on us, it was already too late and it was too small a community for me to bother grabbing for the multiplayer, and the campaign looked great but I knew it alone still wasn't going to be worth the full price.

    That's why I love this channel. Putting real content in their videos and giving insights I as a gamer strongly can relate to. This is the reason why I stopped using IGN and Polygon etc, 'cause they do nothing but hype the game even more. And Don't get me started on how many reviews are bought in IGN.
    Great video and keep doing the amazing work guys!
    At this stage, they're only a few devs whom I can trust being CDPR, Rockstar, Naughty Dog and Blizzard. I used to give all faith to Bioware and I actually liked Mass effect 3 besides the ending. But what they did (or EA did) to Inquisition was disappointing to say the least. Making the whole game full of filler content and being so shallow.
    I think that's the reason for consumers not being so open these days, most games are becoming shallow with more cash in and less game in it.
    2015 was infact one of the best years that we received games full of content , be it Witcher, Fallout 4, Rocket league or even Metal gear solid V (besides the Act 3 , yet the first half was insanely good).
    Take a note game industry. I think 2017 can redeem us.

    Because I have been burned by so many games since 2012 that I do not get "hyped" about any game any more. For example, I don't buy any Bethesda game until it has been out for a year. I have discovered that most game reviews and scores at the launch of a game aren't worth anything (just watch any gaming press awards program to see how much the gaming press in in bed with the companies producing a game). I have learned that watching the "real" reviews from the people playing a game tend to be truer to the mark in the long term. Plus, now, gamers have the advantage of seeing actual game play on Twitch, Beam, TH-cam, etc. to decide if a game is for them or not.

  • @BayattheMoonNetwork
    @BayattheMoonNetwork 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I stopped buying new games years ago, partly because I had too many games in my backlog to play and partly because the cost rose from $60 CDN to $80-$100 CDN per game. Combine that with DLC costs, microtransactions and such and it got ridiculous. My last big "new game" I bought cost me a total of $230 between game, seasons pass, and subsequent DLC. That is enough to buy a Wii-U console for ONE GAME!
    So now I follow a simply strategy, I don't buy a game until/if there comes a point where I KNOW I am going to play it RIGHT AWAY. If I don't have time, or interest, to play it right now I wait. Even if I want to play it right now, I still won't purchase a game for anymore than $50 CDN. What this leads to is me buying full "Game of the Year/Complete" copies a full year after release and spending $30-$50 on it instead of getting the same thing for over $200 a year prior. It also means I NEVER get burned on shitty titles because there is a year of media coverage about it by the time I think about buying it.
    Waiting a year might be tough for some folks, but your wallet will thank you ... and you will thank yourself when you don't have to suffer through a broken piece of garbage.
    Side Note: I also decided to boycott all Retail priced games with microtransactions. That is an inexcusable business practice and I don't need to support it.

    First... you guys are great!
    Second... regarding poor game sales... I think you hit the nail on the head.
    Game devs and publishers have chosen to pursue what can only be called an anti consumer posture.
    They are more interested in getting your money rather than developing a complete, compelling quality game experience. Add to that the new wave of eliminating early release in order to hide game or performance issues... and you have a recipe for poor sales. Period.
    We know what we want to play... and that does not include poorly realized game IP's... or games that don't perform as they should on any platform [that's just Dev incompetence]. Not sure what they are thinking on this front. In most software circles... this would be unacceptable... and contrary to what the gaming industry deludes itself into believing - it IS unacceptable in the gaming market as well.
    Don't get me wrong, there are still some amazing games out there... only they are becoming farther and fewer in number.
    Why? Because profits. What we're clearly seeing is game devs and publishers prioritizing profits over quality [much like television or the movie industry]. And now they are paying the price for it.
    Personally, I miss the days when game devs invested most of the money into the development of a complete quality games... rather than most of the money going to marketing of said game.
    The golden rule for software remains as relevant today as it has been... make quality software that people want... and consumers will buy it. That's been proven over and over again... maybe it's time for the idiots who develop and publish games remember that.

    The main reason:
    1) Huge Inflation in Western Europe. Our money is less worth every single day.
    2) Steam sales: Why buy something for €/$60 on release day that is (99%) broken and needs several months of patching to be any good. When you can just wait 6 months and buy it for half the price
    3) DLC issue's. Many people just wait now for the 'gold' edition of the game (game + all dlc, during steam sales).

    Many factors such as games with high online replay value like Rocket League or most competitive FPSs, Over saturation of games, nostalgia, new hardware releases, and flash sales, used games, or game of the year editions with all DLC. I have sooooo many unfinished games that I've bought this year that I've never been this back logged in my entire life. I almost always try to finish a game I purchase. Also sometimes nostalgia kicks in and you play games you enjoyed several years ago just because you want to and you can. Its not that the new games are bad. We just have way to much content to get through before we spend another dime and real life keeps getting in the way. Also the elephant in the room is the amount of new hardware being released is at break neck speed. We want to update our other technologies hardware such as phones and appliances and can't always spend on new games when you can wait and catch them on a flash sale or used or as a game of the year edition with all DLC. The industry is using short sighted bench marks. Gamers know the price of new technology and games falls over time and they are willing to wait.

    I'm an old video game player now and really, I'm fed up with sequels of sequels of sequels...
    I really don't understand why people like to buy - EACH year - the same games : call of duty, Assassin's creed,etc.
    The industry changed with pension funds : you need to sell a LOT and very rapidly.
    And since you need to have good sales... developers produce the SAME game, with the minimum of new ideas.
    and worst : programmers need to meet the dead lines.. so we have all the time large day one patches !
    The only innovating companies nowadays are..... indie games companies !

    I gotta agree that pricing is a major issue, I'm currently a PC gamer and while I can get game codes with a bit of a discount a game and it's season pass still costs around the 45-50 quid mark. They're too much nowadays.
