Paper filters are often better because they offer more surface. If not, just buy a sport paper filter, and insert it in the original place. Still don't remove the original box, because you want fresh air (20% + dense). Whith more air, the exhaust sensor will give more fuel, so it's perfectly linear, not savings here, sorry. If you want savings (and power comes with it), remap the ECU, to obtain a better fuel consumption that makes it dryer; wait for 10 HP to come, not more, and your top engine to get hotter a little bit. If you want power, add a turbo, change your injectors, your entire exhaust replacing your 3 catalysts by a sport 300 cells... and remap again. There you go for 80 more HP safely. If you want a sport car, or at least a sportive car (within the same tiny budget), buy New Beetle Turbo (have it also, great deal), Golf GTI (same legendary engine), and remap for 220 HP safely, find an old TT or a BMW 325 TDS if you like 6 ... and remap !!! And.. the 'variateur de phase' advances or retards the opening of the valves. It's a very good concept cause it gives more power aligning the timing following the rpm ! Why don't you repair it first, huh ?! 15 euros man, a spring and a freaking joint !
First: your engine is going to breathe HOT air now, and the performance is going down because hot air is less dense and burns less. Second: when you start your engine, I can hear a noise during the first seconds, that indicates you first need to replace your 'variateur de phase' or at least the joints; that's how you lose power. Finally, the advantages of changing the air filter with this kind is 0 or less. One should consider to replace the filter without modifying the air box, with a paper filter offering best performances, in order to breathe fresh air. On these models, the power comes with the replacement of the exhaust, from end to end... and flash the ECU of course. Don't expect a great improvement on these engines.
@@sigmanewsyt No, this engine does not do this sound in normal conditions. What you hear unfortunately, is the valves opening at the wrong moment. It occurs when the item is empty, out of oil pressure, and it's not supposed to happen when the joints are still OK. If your mechanics can not do that, change.
@@maximefromspace3001 I just had my engine swapped and revised 1.5 months ago and it had the sound when it was installed and my old engine also did this.. I'll go by my mechanic tho, but I was there a few days ago to replace my brakes and he didn't say anything about it

Hmm seems a bit pointless to me when you can just fit a Pipercross or similar panel filter in airbox for improved performance & that only takes a few mins..! Plus std system is ducted to bring cold air to inlet pipe whereas K&N one doesn't..!
That's the biggest difference. K&N system intake is much below the std and keep away from motor so it can take colder air vs std. Difference after installing K&N is huge in better consumption, noise and some extra power. Pipercross don't make a diference, that's the difference :-)
Great video, i have the same car, and i have one question, what is that hose going from the throttle body under the engine cover, it is a bit cracked and i want to replace it, i have sealed it for now, but it needs replacement, can someone tell me what that hose is, and what should i buy, it is seen on 1:30 above his left arm
u dimu That's not so important hose because it's only to equilibrate. Through this hose, the oil vapors return to the circulation by drawing them into the air circulation. Alfa Romeo original part number is 46741123 but you can try to find in car parts distruibutors any hose that has the same circumference and then try to connect. After instalation of K&N filter, this part don't serve, they give other one, but it just don't suit in 100% , it was necessary to cut, but anyway it works well. Greetings from Portugal and if you have any question, feel free to ask!!!
@@ixus1000 Thanks for reply and thanks for the help, i replaced that hose, and now i am looking for some simular intake because i dont like this original, i like your setup but i want a bit shorter tube so that air filter isnt that low, once again thanks for reply and once again great video. Wish you all the best from Serbia.
@@udimu6663 OK, when i bought this car it had air filter on the top, so you could see it after opening the mask. But there is the choice- or it's down there and it's more risky in heavy rain and no one can see it, or it's up there and it looses more power because more up - more heat from motor. When the air is hot the efficiency of air filter goes , you don´t get more power from air filter, only sound. There should be some compromise to put this filter in the middle-way but I don´t know if there is any space for it. Anyway when you are done with your air filter, share your video or tell me about results. Good luck!
Hello my friend thx for video. Do you still use it? Can you share your experiences after 2 years? Has fuel consumption increased, how is the performance, has caused any malfunctions, etc. ?
Hey! I've got a lot of question about this K&N air system, so shortly I should make a new video. I need to update cause I have now the same system in my 147 2.0 which I transfer from 1.6 that I sold shortly after made this video. For now I can tell you that i never had problems with my Typhoon. The sound is better for "show-off" but not disturbing during travel. My benzine consumpt is still lower about 0,7 -1 l compared to OEM (before it was 9.0, now is 8.1). This system will never cause increased consumption because it deliver to motor more air so it need less gasoline! No issue for now! Thanks for watching, please subscribe! Most of my videos are in portugues, but I will maybe in this month video about this K&N in my 147 2.0 in english. See you!
@@ixus1000 quote: "This system will never cause increased consumption because it deliver to motor more air so it need less gasoline! " end of quote. With all do respect but this is a bullshit. The ecu adjusts how much fuel is added to the air supplied, more air needs more fuel, its a simple fact. Now it says on the box more power, have you had it Dino tested to show the gains?
It's original filter cover that cames from K&N as a part of Typhoon system. They recommend to use this cover when you drive in very dusty roads or if you don't have bottom engine cover (for exemple in Portugal, many cars came without this cover because of good climatic conditions). It gives extra protection to your filter. But also there is an obvious difference in performance with or without this protection. With protection the fuel efficiency lower from 0.9 to 0.5 ( in my case). You can also distinguish different, more moderate sound of engine acceleration. Thanks for watching and please subscribe, as soon I will share new video about the same air filter but in bigger engine!
