  • FlyWire does a Prop Balance with the Dynavibe GX3. Check it out: was it easy or hard? Was the Prop Smooth? Did it make a difference? Should you do it too?
Short answer... after we flew it... heck yeah!
FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

FYI. I noticed a difference in the shake of the plane at 2500 from the first run to the second (balanced) run. I'm sure that you will feel a difference in flight. Great tutorial!! Thanks

A bit of a commitment to drill and bolt after just one run. These devices often suggest an adjustment to the weight or position after the first run.

Hello Scott - I wanted to point out something, one A&P to another. IMO, part of being a professional means researching "acceptable" and or "approved" guidance prior to commencing work, agreed? In this case, your guidance is FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-37E, "Aircraft Propeller Maintenance". In the section on dynamic balancing, the AC mentions only two acceptable procedure documents (if manufacturer's procedures are not available) but does not limit us to them. The first document mentioned, Chadwick-Helmuth Publication No. AW-9511-2, entitled “The Smooth Propeller” is considered "acceptable data" by the FAA per the AC while the second, ACES Publication No. 100-OM-01, entitled “ACES Systems Guide to Propeller Balancing”, is considered "approved" data by FAA letter. Per the ACES document, you're not allowed to add washers only on the inside of the spinner bulkhead as you did. Instead, you must divide your washers between the front and back. I don't want to sound like a know it all but I thought you should know. One thing your video shows clearly is how much harder it is to balance Continental engines vs. Lycomings since the Lycoming flywheel (actually called a ring gear support or something like that) is drilled at 30° angles as a planned place for balance weights. I enjoyed your video and I also own a Dynavibe GX3. Thanks again for making the video. John McClanahan

I wished you would have spent more time explaining why you measured from that particular blade and could have a showed how you figured the 4.27 inch from blade and also drilling to allow for such a big washer to fit under the curve of back plate. Also would have been nice to see where and how you set the machine up .Watching you and the outside of the plane do a run up does nothing.

The instructions tell you to do that and the computer tells you where.

I was able to do my North American Yale using a Dynavibe GX3. It was a huge difference for my airplane which you and I both noticed. I believe you will also notice a difference the next time you fly your Bonanza. You're not only balancing your prop, but using it to put all the different harmonics with the plane in sync.

Hello Scott. I'm interested in how you attached the optical pickup and the accelerometer to the engine. I enjoy and appreciate all your videos. They make me think a lot about GA safety and educate me on aircraft mechanicals. Flying is serious business not entertainment. Thanks, Bob R

It would have been nice if you explained what and when you were pushing buttons on the Dynavibe as well as the method you used for the one bolt solution. I see someone else asked about the measuring of the angle, but that would have been ,again, nice to have in the explanation.

Are you going to buy a DynaVibe? If not can't see why that would be important. I didn't do a DynaVibe tutorial video.

This would have been really interesting with a camera on a glass of water in the plane, before and after the balance.

    Mr. Perdue,
I have been watching your videos for a long while now and find them very useful. Thank you for sharing them. I own a v-tail K35 that needs to have the prop balanced. We try to do as much maintenance as is allowed under part 43. Based on what I see in your video, it looks like we can do this work. However, the cost of the GX3 is pretty high for something that we will use only every few years. And our shop wants between $600-700 for a balancing...which seems a bit extreme. The "Bonanza tax"---I guess. Do you know where/how one might rent a unit? Our EAA group here in Amarillo seems to be dormant at the moment or I would inquire of them. Thanks.

Paul- There are a lot of things you can do to maintain your airplane of you are the owner/operator. Under supervision of an AP you can do even more. But a prop balance is not one of them. They are indeed quite expensive and probably why the folks that own them don't want to rent them. I expect they are interested in paying for them. Sorry your EAA chapter is dormant!

Did you buy the G3X or rent it?
