You can definitely mix English and western for both worse and rider. I’ve always ridden English but started doing western along with it a few years ago and don’t think I’ll ever stop doing both. Horses could definitely do different things in both discipline, a horse like Finn could do jumpers in English and barrels in western, chino and Storm could do hunters and western pleasure or even a competitive trail class as a fun event quite well I think.
Sorry but I'm not even at 6 minutes into the video and I want to rip those reins from her hands and throw that bit in the garbage. WAY too heavy on his face, constantly. He gets no relief. He needs to be in a D-ring snaffle like yesterday before he's totally ruined.
I think if you work on this with Finn more he could be amazing at it. He is very good at yielding his hind quickly and he clearly loves speed. He could make a great barrel pony
I started my mare in Dressage / English pleasure, then I switched her to the western games events. Poles was our best event, she would clock anywhere between 21 - 23 secs in poles. Not record breaking but definitely competitive. So yes a horse can do both but it also depends on the horse. Some horses are not that versatile. The english riding helped to really give her a good foundation for the other events.
Not trying to be mean but you should stop using that bit and stop pulling on him you should find a trainer that will teach him and Sophie to stop properly you should be able to stop him with your seat not your hands!
Oh my goodness!!!! Finn looks so good doing those barrels!! And you can definitely mix English and western 100%!! I do! My gelding can do hunters and he also can do barrels and poles. It’s good to switch it up and it’s fun! :) western shows are so much fun! I bet Sophie would have fun doing them with Finn
Thank you for letting your kids be kids! and your horses being horses. They're not wanting to travel the world competing, so having fun and learning different things os the best thing! I do very much dislike the thoughts of people making you be too serious.
First off Finn looks BEAUTIFUL in that tack, I used to do western lessons and when I started to wanting to go back my barn stops lessons. O.O like really? The best facility near me and they stop. But I’ve done keyhole as a beginner never did it when I was advanced… Remember Sophie, I’d you wanna do this with Finn he just needs training:) I’ve seen amazing Hunter horses fly around barrels at my barn they just need the right motivation and training, I’ve seen a lot of riders do liberty with barrels, Like getting their horse to follow them around the barrels and it’s just beautiful
I think it’s a great idea to do lots of different disciplines because it makes the horse think and also gives them a break from what they are focusing on Love you guys 💜
I actually think Finn might be similar to our horse. He has the slightest head shake he does when he’s frustrated about something (usually when he’s had enough or is waiting to get going!!) but it’s much less severe than Finns. I definitely think doing this in that bit when you have others you could have used was a mistake, I think Sophie and Finn could do with some one to one time to just ride with no pressure and bond. Not having to jump or constantly work on him but to just get to know each other again and relax!
i love how they only heart the comments that are telling them they are doing good. they never heart the ones that are telling them what they don’t want to hear, that they are doing something wrong.
One difference between English and western is that in general you are a lot looser on your reins in western. Because of this western may actually be great for Sophie’s riding because it could possibly teach her to not rely so much on her reins for balance, but if Sophie does try to pursue western riding then you will need to get a different bit. it will be a big test of confidence for her.
I'm a barrel racer and a 1x nationals qualifier. Take this advice: getting used to your horse and knowing it's capabilities Is very important. Also letting your horse know before you turn or stop also called checking is essential.
Goofy thoughts! Not hate. Have we tried a fly veil on him? Or braiding back his forelock? My thought is maybe he doesn’t like hair touching his ears? Also, have y’all tried a rubber or Mullen mouth on him? I do think the pellham is too much bridle on him. In a softer bit, maybe if you practiced a “use it and lose it” theory, it might help? My horse used to root when I half halted or asked for a stop, and now he carries his head much softer. I squeeze gently with my lower three fingers and close my lower leg when I want to head to come down, and whoa is a few longer squeezes as well as stopping my body. Leaning slightly farther back might help too. My horse doesn’t like when I’m over his shoulders. Sophie’s English saddle may be fit slightly far forward, making her feel pitched back? Again, just friendly thoughts! ❤️ and yes, I do think doing different disciplines is good for horses. Versatility is good. 😁 girls are looking great! What a fun day to try barrels on Finn. He’s such a good sport! Love you guys!
I'm not sure about anyone else but when I showed( in the eighties and nineties) I showed my appaloosa mare in most disciplines..western pleasure class was our specialty but I also showed hunt seat and bareback western, trail class and competitive trail. We weren't rich so anything I wanted to try I did with my mare. Later as I showed in bigger and more competitive shows I was able to get a super gaming horse to show in speed events but I babysat all summer to purchase her. The best memories I have are how much fun we all had just like you all in this video. A horse person never stops learning so every experience counts. Finn and Sophie look great western by the way.
It’s beautiful to watch the girls and horses try new things, I think they all did great and it looked so fun. Thank you for the amazing content and your authenticity 💕✨
I love to barrel race with my horse! Try riding around more in a western saddle (I don't know how often you guys ride western) and also try to get a coach to help you with barrel racing. You can also watch some of Fallon Taylor's videos. She is a world champion barrel racer and she gives great tips in her videos. This is only if you are going to try barrel racing more often. Love your horses and videos.
🐴 I always thought western was easy and jumping is above it. But when I started learning western because my trainer thought I needing new skills. It was hard and I needed to ride western (sitting on pockets) and not like English (sitting toward) you learn to trust your horse in different ways and get better at English with western riding.
It’s alright to do English and western with the right horse! I mainly do English and my pony needs some extra fun, so we run barrels and poles! As long as Finn can re-gather himself and Sophie knows how to do so, you can always do both. Plus it’s fun to do different things with the same horse 🥰
There is no reason that a horse cannot do English and western but when you do western you do need to neck rein him lol. I grew up in 4h and we all did everything on the same horse western equitation, gymkhana and English hunter jumper trail etc. loved it all
I would love to see someone do barrels, keyhole and western pleasure in a standard bit on Finn. Think he would be much better at it. I agree the other people on here when they say you'll need to bring him down from that leverage bit. A little longer in that bit will make his mouth rock hard And then you'll know what it's like not to stop. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if his mouth is already too hard with that bit. Though Sophie's hands are much better now the death grip she and gabby used to have on him.
Finn is the perfect (well in my opinion) size for barrels but only thing if you decide to go to compitió a then please take 2-3 months of western training trust me you’ll understand western more cause I ride western for like 7-9 years plus this year so ya just wanted to say this to see if I could help😊
I did this in high school, it was one of my favorite things! The way we do it where I live is with chalk on the ground though, instead of going through posts. It also has a circle that connects the two lines, so that if you go through it you get DQd. The judges look for the chalk dust for whether they will take your time or DQ
I think Sophie would benefit from a new horse a bit bigger and one that isn’t all for speed she needs to learn basics rather than focus on controlling her horse. Sophie needs lessons on storm he’s slow and experienced so she can focus on her riding not her horse
Although I agree it looks like it doesn’t fit great or something of the sort, it’s better for her to be wearing an ill-fitting helmet or be wearing it wrong than not wearing a helmet at all.
I do gymkanna for fun and all I have to say is lots of leg Sophie! Soft hands and more leg and Finn will enjoy it a little more. Also take it slow so Finn understands what you are doing :) looks good tho for your first time and you should try it again with tack that works for you
I’m glad to see you guys are switching things up and having fun! Sophie’s change in confidence these last months is amazing! I don’t want to come across as negative but I feel like I have to say it and I do see I’m not the only one with these thoughts. Please change that bit for Finn... That is a harsh bit and the head shaking is him telling you he does not like that bit. If that was my horse and I saw him doing like he did, I would stop everything as he really seems to be in discomfort. I’ll be honest, I don’t like the bit when you’re riding English and I definitely don’t like it for doing barrels. Please listen to your horse and put another bit in, as it’s obvious he does not like that one 😅 AT LEAST do it for doing barrels. I do love following your life and story with horses and I admire your positive look ☺️ Finn seems like he would enjoy doing barrels 👏🏻
What a cute pony in barrel tack! For his head shaking, maybe try a different bit, he might be happier in something lighter. Just an idea if you were looking for any, I don’t know this pony, just mine. She barrel races best in a hackamore. 💜
Yes, you can have a horse who does english and western. The horses that I rode for shows before moving did both. Some of them even did jumping. I believe it's good to have them do different things every so often. It's good for their body and mind. Riding different disciplines makes the rider an amazing rider as well.
Yup. Ran barrels and keyhole. I'm a rodeo girl at heart but anything having to do with horses grabs my attention and appreciation. Plenty of breeds are multipurpose riding style horses. Have definitely shown horses in both western , english and driving at the same show and they excell, others don't. The most important thing is whatever you and your horse are doing, you both have to enjoy it; you're a team! 💞
I do Gymkhanas with my Dressage horse. And she is amazing !!!! I bet Fin will be awesome with alittle more practice!!!! And so agree with you Laura !!! I do Gymkhanas for fun!!!!
Dont worry! I barrel race my 17 yrl mare. Its takes a LOT of work. Finn dose some awesome turn. There are three things in barrel racing that matter the most speed.turn.have fun
Have you ever looked into weather Finn has head shakers? A couple of my horses have it and it is similar to what looks like Finn has. You can control it by meds! But definitely look into it!!
🎉 The girls did great in western. You guys should do it more often and maybe take some western lessons. You will actually get better at riding and you gain new skills. You guys should go to a western event like gymkhana. Jumping is something but to ride western is a big skill.
Little tip for Sophie next time in western you need to beStraight up and if you want to go faster you lean forward if you want to slow down you can lean backwards next time if you do that it would be perfect other than that she did amazing.
I think I realize one of the reasons why doesn’t have good brakes riding western is because you’re not using a western bridal or a western bit if you wanna ride western you’re you’re gonna have to get him used to that
Finn reminds me of my red and white border collie. I nick named him pony boy. Dio's favourite thing to do is the weave poles. I think Finn sees this as a job as does my dog. He looked great when given the ok to go fast. My Welsh Mountain pony used to love barrel racing and rounding up cattle. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories💗🤗
it would be worth trying a nose net on finn. the head shaking is similar to that of a horse with head shakers syndrome. i’ve got one and cut a hole in the side of the net and velcro the net to the bit so it doesn’t fly up and whack them in the face
I honestly rather see Sophie do this it’s more easier then jumping cause you can be you when barrel racing it’s more fun as well you don’t have to be perfect or your horse it’s all about timing & all barrels staying upright! You could allow your horse to be dirty when racing cause I can assure you your horse will definitely be dirty after🤣 Finn is perfect for western he’s more comfortable as well!
If you guys have gymkhanas in your area, you should enter Sophie and Finn in one! I bet they'd have so much fun. I love doing them, and I usually barrel race in my jump saddle lol 😂
If you keep working with Finn in barrels I think he would be a great barrel horse 🐎 And if Sophie and gabby want to be horsewoman(s) they should take lessons in western riding it’s just important to know especially if Sophie wants to be a trainer
I barrel race my 5 year old and it is a lot of work. If you want to compete or just have fun riding on barrels just make sure you give him time to learn everything your telling him. When y'all were going through the barrel pattern it definitely looked like he knew what he was doing and he looks like he likes to do it.
I had to get used to riding in English and now in my opinion it’s more comfortable than western but some people are meant to ride English and some people are meant to ride western. It all depends on the rider
Good point about your goal not to be very serious. I'm very serious about my sport but as an older adult I find much joy in working very hard to improve. At the girls age fun is more appropriate as long as horses are happy.
That girl rode him beautifully!! Connected him around the barrels and he was alllll for it! Lovely! Always fun to challenge a horse and see what other potential they have!
I think that Finn would be a good barrel horse, also he looks AMAZING in that tack. He has done barrels before with Sophia just trotting so it is not like he is being cantered over barrels as his first time, this is his first time with an actual barrel racer though.
People just annoy me lol they are way to quick to judge they don’t know what happens when you aren’t recording and they don’t personally know Finn! They don’t know how he would react about something just keep doing you! Finn looked great!

I think if you work on this with Finn more he could be amazing at it. He is very good at yielding his hind quickly and he clearly loves speed. He could make a great barrel pony
Wow Laura that looked like alot of fun.im afraid i agree with alot of other viewers.that bit isnt the best in Sophies hands at the moment.
I ride English and western pleasure all on the same horse competitively, finny could absolutely do more than one thing if he’s trained right 😊😊
Thank you for letting your kids be kids! and your horses being horses.
But I’ve done keyhole as a beginner never did it when I was advanced…
Remember Sophie, I’d you wanna do this with Finn he just needs training:) I’ve seen amazing Hunter horses fly around barrels at my barn they just need the right motivation and training, I’ve seen a lot of riders do liberty with barrels, Like getting their horse to follow them around the barrels and it’s just beautiful
Oh I love the idea of liberty around barrels
I think it’s a great idea to do lots of different disciplines because it makes the horse think and also gives them a break from what they are focusing on
Love you guys 💜
That saddle isn’t a good fit the saddle was bouncing some it should have at least have a bucking strap on at least
There is no reason at all for Finn to have a Pelham in his mouth at all please change his bit and never barrel race in that bit he’s clearly in pain.
Normally keyhole is used with flour here in US….me and my horse are pretty competitive when it comes to barrel racing. He gets really excited
On Sophie’s next ride, have her drop her reins, and then use her. Body to stop him. Gabby had to do that too.
Yes you can Mix western and English my friend dose and it ruin anything.
I grew up in 4h and we all did everything on the same horse western equitation, gymkhana and English hunter jumper trail etc. loved it all
Can I fly to Canada to teach Finn to have some brakes plz
I feel like Finn would be such a good barrel pony
I think Sophie would benefit from a new horse a bit bigger and one that isn’t all for speed she needs to learn basics rather than focus on controlling her horse. Sophie needs lessons on storm he’s slow and experienced so she can focus on her riding not her horse
She also needs a better hunter pony/horse. Gonna head seat and speed isn’t right for the hunters.
Only thing i see wrong is the bit he may have been happier with a lighter one since u have to pull so much
It’s not the first time remember he barrel raced with Stella
I meant with someone who knows how to do it
You absolutely can mix the two. I mean they have western dressage
He looks great in that tack. One thing, why does she wear a helmet when she doesn’t even wear it properly?? Curious
Although I agree it looks like it doesn’t fit great or something of the sort, it’s better for her to be wearing an ill-fitting helmet or be wearing it wrong than not wearing a helmet at all.
I think you should consider switching the bit
Actually Finn looks reallyyyyy good in western ❤❤
What a cute pony in barrel tack! For his head shaking, maybe try a different bit, he might be happier in something lighter. Just an idea if you were looking for any, I don’t know this pony, just mine. She barrel races best in a hackamore. 💜
Ya ik in the past but you are doing good and your right they should have fun
stay safe
I do keyhole,barrel racing, polls,and more!
Here’s a article about it! www.google.com/amp/s/practicalhorsemanmag.com/.amp/health-archive/get-a-grip-on-headshaking-syndrome
🎉 The girls did great in western. You guys should do it more often and maybe take some western lessons. You will actually get better at riding and you gain new skills. You guys should go to a western event like gymkhana. Jumping is something but to ride western is a big skill.
You should do some more barrel training, Finn could get very good at it, And its so much fun!! :D
I didn't get the impression finn had any idea what was going on. I think he was stressed about it. He likes sophia riding him hunter much better.
I think he could do the barrels, he just needs to take it slow. And re-learn it, but horses like to change the regular up
Yes, you can most definitely mix western and english. The basics are the basics, regardless of whether there's a horn in front of you or not.
Little tip for Sophie next time in western you need to beStraight up and if you want to go faster you lean forward if you want to slow down you can lean backwards next time if you do that it would be perfect other than that she did amazing.
I think he does great at both. He definitely looked like he enjoyed the barrels
I think Finn would be great at barrel racing if you kept practicing with him !!! He would make a great racing pony 😍😍
Finn looks so natural in a western saddle!
Yes!! You CAN mix English and Western!
Of course you can but you need to use the right tack. He clearly wasn’t happy being yanked with that bit in his mouth
Sofia needs to start barrel racing she would be so good it take a lot though!
Its ordered! Coming soon
If you keep working with Finn in barrels I think he would be a great barrel horse 🐎
And if Sophie and gabby want to be horsewoman(s) they should take lessons in western riding it’s just important to know especially if Sophie wants to be a trainer
It’s great to mix English and western! You guys should do both all the time
I practice dressage and recently started campdrafting. Def's can mix English and Western
I barrel race my 5 year old and it is a lot of work. If you want to compete or just have fun riding on barrels just make sure you give him time to learn everything your telling him. When y'all were going through the barrel pattern it definitely looked like he knew what he was doing and he looks like he likes to do it.
Finny looked like an actual barrel horse. He looked so good
I had to get used to riding in English and now in my opinion it’s more comfortable than western but some people are meant to ride English and some people are meant to ride western.
Finn did very well! I think If you prCtice more he would get better at Barrel Racing :)
Keyhole is my favorite event to.
I ride Western .
I’ve done keyhole, barrels, polebending, cutback, figure 8, and many more!
