One of the most if not the most underrated DJs of all time. Also Mr Mixx from 2 live crew. They didn’t have the most lyrical MCs or from the east coast so they were overlooked
I think it's just because in the '80s, everybody who wasn't from NYC pretty much got ignored by urban media until they hit big everywhere else BESIDES New York.
This must have been a great time to be in the LA scene ( besides the gangs and crack) the freshness of the dj's , mc's and graffiti writers.... Hip hop started to evolve.
Tony a wizard from the roadium radio interview of Dj joe Cooley brought me here, and dam it's amazing seeing the history of hip hop and rap in the works
Coming from Nebraska I use to go to Cali every summer in the 80's and record MIXED tapes off the radio MUCH RESPECT to KDAY and the MACK ATTACK MIXMASTERS!!!!
hell yea DJ Joe Cooley in the mix, 1580 KDAY best station ever in history of radio, first LA radio to play hip hop..i listened to KDAY everysingle day, this station really influenced me, what made me start to dj in 1982 and till this dj this old man(me) still cuts it up :)...i saw joe a couple times in LA also arabian prince with NWA, Eazy and the rest.RIP Eazy. there will never be a times like thosedays man, good times
Excellent! Truly an innovator! There were not a lot of heads rocking like this in the West at that time. A seamless, cut filled set! "Joe's as fast as Carl Lewis"
hope he knows how much influence he was in the scheme of things, I cut like him for years before I knew where I got it from, have to thank Qbert for passing that knowledge on, big up JC
I remember this guy coming to my high school(Eisenhower) with some clown named "cisco". Joe Cooley was AMAZING! Him and "Bobcat" set set the standard for quickness in southern Ca.
I never knew he was that good. They didn't get any play in NYC back in the day but, I remember them from Fresh and Word Up magazine, flossin' the finger waves and Cazals with acid wash denim suits. They were doing their thing. It's amazing how labels didn't push artists and made them very limited and they could've made some NYC money too. NYC missed out.
I have many influences, but Q-bert & mixmaster Mike are like gods to me! When i scratch I open the doors of perception. It's hard to explain, but shure feels great. Hope I can influence others with my music! that's what it's all about.
@thudrumble ...what up Q.,SteelBorn here and i agree with you......but have to give stupid props to one of my main influences, legend MIX MASTER ICE...damn i miss them funky days...
yes that the shit I was the one that got joe to do our noon dance at banning, them was the day's him comming in tearing it up thats when breakdanceing was fresh,we had all the stars at school them days dj quik, joe cooley (noon dance)wino, lil rocking G,Dj Stix,Dj Casper, and yeah he taugh aladin (that use to go by Dj Imposter)
One of my most Epic Memories of a live performance ever was the crowd straight gettin Hype as FUCK to Joe Goin' OFF on the ones and twos after him and Rodney O finished doing some of their tracks live back at Samerika Hall in my hometown of Carson (this same year). Joe didn't need any gimmicky shit for his sets. But then you had other fools like DJ Hamburger Helper, who was pretty alright and everything, I'll give him so-so cred for that, but would try to hype up his set by doin' shit like takin' off his Reebok shoe and scratchin' with that shit while his homey was on the MIC trying to make like it was a big deal, Hehe. You know... and others who'd be all beat-juggling and trying to incorporate behind the back manipulations while turning a rotation with their body. Shit like that Man..fools have no idea how much more insanely easy it is to rock the fuck out of a set with Modern Tech these days. To anyone reading this, when you get a chance, for shits and giggles on a decent system, with Vinyl, Play Planet Rock forwards... then by hand play ShyD's Gotta be Tough backwards beat-matching... and then look over at your Sub ;) EDIT: Oh yeah, also seeing Rodney and Joe as Casa Camino Real during the time period of "These are my Beats" with Egyptian Lover. That set was hype too! And Oh Yeah... Thank Heaven for KDAY on the bus going to school in the morning!
I met Joe in santa ana when he was performing with Rodney O and general Jeff, cool dude still is. Joe is prob one of the top 5 DJ's of all time.. KDAY1580AM was the baddest station onn the planet, good times..thanks for the vid
this was a great time to be a dj in socal. egyptian lover was holding down all of LA with uncle jams army (dj'ing to sold out crowds at the LA sports arena). dre (yes, THE dre) was a DJ for the high powered dj cru out of compton. joe cooley was coming up, jammin gemini was coming up...AM1580 KDAY was the station.
one of the tightest videos ive ever seen here. up there with the mustang that keeps bailin regardless of the po car ramming his shit on repeat mode. joe coooley stands the test of time. a true Gz G
Great skills! Sometimes I enjoy this "old school" videos more than the new ones. its more musical and raw too, I guess... Of course today's "top turntablists" know more tricks and have new(and better) machines to play with. Just my opinion. peace
Just the fact that Joe did this on those clunky large Numark mixers is amazing enough. I think using the line switch lost him points at the DMC's against Cash Money. I remember those things constantly breaking off too lol
- The way Aladdin uses the line switch scratch and transforming on Rock The Bells at the ENDING of "Aladdin's On A Rampage", you CANNOT duplicate that on a crossfader. Listen real closely, you'll see what i mean. But u have to hear it on the "Aladdins on a Rampage" song.
yup those were the days. i went to carson hs at the same time...miss those carson/banning rivalries. i remember going up to SF back in the late 80s and meeting some of the dj's back then...they didn't believe me that DRE was a dj and used to spin noon gigs at carson. egyptian lover also spun at our school. lil rockin g had the best kraftwerk tour de france routine out of all of them IMHO.
ok cool thanks for clearing that up. i'm just trying to share some old videos that i rediscovered. i don't even remember how i got them - most likely given to me from other dj friends back in the day.
I agree, but Filipinos took djing to another level. The scene wouldn't be what it is today without Filipino DJs contributions, it's not opinion but fact. Like everything else, Joe Cooley was an influence to Q and so on. Thats what it's about. Evolution, takin it to another level!
@Finnsnor Good looking out I was just about to write the same thing. I played with Joe before he was anything, we played at a 15 years (Quinianera) party in South Gate, CA
wow this is def a keeper man -- a glimpse at how hard l.a. hip-hop was back in the day -- dagg joe is killin it on the wheels of steel -- i love it when he used to cut the #@%! out of "Its Tiiiiime" -- by the way, I think this was made before 1987 -- maybe close to '84 -- let us know if you find more tapes!!
Yeah but keep in mind that this was 87 and Aladdin was 14-15 yrs old at the time. Who knows...Joe probably gave him those routines and trained him for the DMC of 89. Still dope though!
i can't stand the words a head of its tiime cause it was perfect timing nobody in today's time even coming close!! to this they work hard to be that good.. so did I!!
na bro i aint saying that,im just saying i was there that night at my sports night banning high school ,and had the video tape or at least a copy of it ,its about 2 to 3 hours long,
Dude i've heard Q bert say many times that this was one of his dj inspirations...so obvious he looked to Joe Colley and others when he was coming up and to further clarify this..read the post from Thudrumble below (btw thudrumble=Q bert)
Indeed it was superfresh. many of the best modern scratch DJs prove incapable to juggle so smoothly, simply and in time, and find themselves down the ugly path of nonmusicjugglespam.Jugglespam is for djgeeks, but not this one, for it is for the people.
yeah, of course Qbert would, but he would eat up most DJ's on the planet. My point is, at the time cats like Joe, Aladdin, Mixmasters etc. were ruling shit. It's a whole other conversation to bring Qbert into it. He was influenced by them just as much as we were. Props on mentioning Battlecat tho. Not many people give that dude his props. He was tearing shit up bitd. I still remember that D.O.C. routine to this day.
if you're trying to make an accusation towards me, prove it. i suppose you were also in SF in 1990 to tape Qbert and the other DJ vids that i uploaded too huh? because they were all on the same vhs tape. the blame lies with your acquaintances from 15 years ago.
1999 was 10 years ago brah! If ur just thinkin of battles then yeah, shit can repeat itself after a while. But, on a musical tip, it is WAY diffrent now. Trust, look up the controller-1 turntable. Dstyles prob gets more props than q now too. Let's put in perspective though cause Q came from the sf bay mobile scene. Quest and Disk, who are Latin by the way, are just as dope as q and they all came up together. Q was the first to put it out there. Why you puttin down the bay? I got Luv 4 LA
mfuji0001, You don't think Q got some ideas for his old DMC routines from cats like Joe and Cash Money? I know everyone was cutting up "Tour De France" and "It's Time" back then but not like this. Respect to Q, but get off his nuts and show some respect to a true pioneer.
Joe Cooley had no respect for the record he was mixing and that is what made him the greatest DJ in that era. The DJ must control the music not go along with it. #boss #business #science
So is this all turntabilist or what because shit is really evolved now. Check d-styles, ruckaziod and teeko, the controller-1 turntable. Don't know who you talkin about but I don't ever rember hearin that black or latin djs are wack!? If you see these orbit and crab djs then you been watchin the wrong djs brah! Don't get me wrong though, I showcased at a filipino festivile and the first thing they menitoned was isp. I was like, "Great!" I shoulda known that was commin lol! Yadada!
some DJ's can't even do what Joe Cooley did in the '80's....He was DEFinately ahead of his time!
