  • Plusnuts make it easy to firmly attach your project to a metal wall. You can install a plusnut with a special applicator, but you can also use two small wrenches, a bolt and a pair of washers. I show you the latter method in this video.

      Unfortunately, I couldn't help you, but thanks for the feedback.
      I grinned when you recommended a power tool. I'm one of those old guys, that loves a handtool and doing it slowly. Perhaps though, you liked the part, where I sped up the video :)

    Plus nuts are badass. I used a number of these in a Jeep fiberglass body to replicate fixed nuts that were in place in the stock steel body. I used basically the same tool setup. These worked 100% better than the expensive rivnut kit I tried first. The rivnut either in steel or aluminum would just bulge out the drilled hole and not bite into the fiberglass. They expanded and blew out the hole when trying to expand them. Plus nuts worked and clamped super tight.! Worked friggen awesome! If I had a steel body I would probably even still use the plus nuts just because of the surface area they expand out to.

    Thanks for the education... But as a person totally unfamiliar with cross nuts/plus nuts/rivet nuts, (I have found them called any of these in various videos) I still have a few questions.... I had thought I could just go to Lowes or an auto supply, but none of them carry the nuts o know anything about them. #1 do I use a 1/4" cross nut for a 1/4" hole? #2 what size bolt do I use with a 1/4" cross nut? I do know enough that the hole needs to be bigger then the nut which needs to be bigger than the bolt? I also saw another video showing how to use the two washers and a LARGER nut to hold the bolt when setting/tightening the cross nut instead of using an expensive setter.. Your video would be better if you explained everything from scratch for those of us who have absolutely no experience with these valuable tools in a van build.

    Good video. I just installed a number of these and I can say with 100% certainty that there is NO NEED for a special installation tool. Some of the dedicated tools actually do an inferior job. A grade 8 bolt, oversized nut and a couple washers combined with a Makita bit driver works perfectly. These things are really soft and I set most with a stainless screw. Just don't over-do it.

      They have some sort of surface treatment, but they are made of steel. I only used 10 or 15 of them during the build so far, but probably the single most important part that I used.

    Hey van,
    I can't get the plusnuts to stop turning in the hole when I turn head with wrench. Any tips?
    Thanks for the great videos mate!

    • @cargovanconversion
      @cargovanconversion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Charles,
      I hope you use two wrenches. The smaller one, closer to the plusnut should be 'forced against the plusnut by the bolt and/or by using the wrench somewhat as a lever. That should keep the plusnut in place especially during the first few turns; after that, the plusnut automatically gets forced against the metal. If that doesn't work and you have access to the rear of the plusnut, you may be able to put a locking plier on the plusnut. So far I've had no problems installing them this way, but I imagine you may also be able to put a rubber washer between the wrench and the plusnut, to stop it from turning. I haven't tried that and you will ruin the rubber washer, but it may help you to get the work done :)
      Wish you well.

    • @cargovanconversion
      @cargovanconversion  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi PS.Custom,
      It hardly takes more time, if at all, but more importantly, there is no challenge in that. It's not about money, it's about creativity.
      Anyway, if you want to buy the specific tool, why not. There are also brand-specific plusnuts that come with their own tool. Lots of choices.
      Thanks for the feedback.

      Hi mate,
      I suppose he wasn't talking about Ozzies :) (just kidding, love the people and almost was one).
      There are multiple names for them, perhaps all regional variants. They may have been derived from rivnuts. I can say that the plusnut is the single most important piece of my build. Extremely useful.

      The plus nut is better for timber. It countersinks into the timber to help it stay put, where a nutsert will spin because it's round.

    I'm extremely green- here goes:
    Tell me about that second wrench; what does it grip onto, how does it work in this application?

    • @cargovanconversion
      @cargovanconversion  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Micah,
      Difficult to tell you how it works, but it ensures a bit more grip for the bolt on the plusnut and preventing the plusnut from turning.
      The second wrench, the one closest to the plusnut, is somewhat bigger than the thread of the bolt and should fit between the two washers. It is an advantage to use slightly angled wrenches, which will keep your fingers off the wall, but that's not necessary. The first few turns may need a bit of force, but after the plusnut is starting to compress (behind the wall), it will get much easier. When the wrench stops turning, the plusnut is fully compressed and you can removed the bolt and washers. Then use an appropriate length bolt, to secure the item to the wall.
      Hope that helps :)
      Van Williams

    • @micahmitchell517
      @micahmitchell517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@cargovanconversion THANKS!!
      That does help. Your explanation clarifies amply.
      I understand now: The bolt and washers used to set the plusnut is not the same as used in the plusnut to secure the item therefore breakage of the bolt is not a concern nor marring of the threads. The washers help prevent slippage of the wrench, give a bit of leverage, and help protect the surface the plusnut is going in.
      This all may seem to be overthinking. For most people it probably is. I am in a position, fiscally and physically, where I have not room for error so must fully understand the dynamics of even the littlest of procedures; I have to 'overthink' in order to mitigate the high risks involved even in mundane of acts.
      I really appreciate your explaining this technique. Thank you.

    OMG! I want to use these plusnuts in my van. Nuts it's been a nightmare. I bought 1/4 20 thread plusnuts and I've sent back two tools to install them. I'm on my third one and it doesn't work either. When I do it manually like shown in this video, I can't get the plusnut tight against the wall. It does what it's supposed to do but it stops short of becoming tight. So I now have two loose plusnuts in My van wall. I'll laugh in a year but now I'm crying so loud. Anyone got ant ideas.
