    This is the reason why Very few, IF ANY, can stand up to GB's virtuosity. They'll only realise it when he's not around anymore one day. But, long live George Benson - the king of jazz guitar

  • @Virtues4U
    @Virtues4U 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    There is no one who can stand up to Benson. He is just in a different class and zone. The jazz world understates and underestimates him unjustly only because he ventured into a new sound in 1976, forgetting what he achieved as a straight-ahead jazz guitarist in the days of Mcduff and Kessel. The thing is with this Monk tune is that every note Benson plays, is played with precision, clarity - and soul. And then those chromatic runs. The tone of the guitar is top drawer and despite the fact that this was from a concert probably more than 30 years ago. Benson is genius.

    When your virtuosity is such that you can simply play in real-time whatever your mind comes up with. It's called playing "free", the instrument is not in your way. Bravo George.

    Like the legends who preceded him Wes, Django, Christian, George takes the guitar to places it’s never been. The virtuosity is astounding. Every note full of soul and passion.

    George handed me this guitar once and said go on and use it..I took it home and had it in my possession for almost 3 years then out of the blue seleno Clarke called me and said 'George wants his guitar back' ,I was a little surprised, I thought he'd given it to me but what could l say?..seleno came by a couple of days later and took the guitar 😆

      😂 I’ll raise your frustration, Ed… Circa 1991, I was over at his house in Jersey and he takes me in his closet full of guitar cases. My heart is pounding and he gets up on a step-stool and starts handing me cases… L5s, Johnny Smiths, Gretch, this and that. He settled on an L5 and said, “Take it in the living room and warm it up.” I’m salivating thinking that he’s about to grant me one of his guitars, and probably not playing much of anything because… it’s friggin’ George Benson!!! Then he says, “You like it? It’s nice, huh? I’ll sell it to you for $5,000.”
      After I picked my heart up off the floor, it was back to the practice room…

    Round Midnight: Thelonious Monk was the poet who wrote the bluesy poem without words.
    Wes Montgomery's version lifts it up, making entertainment out of it. George Benson puts a power trip over it, dressed like a policeman, rendering a show of force.

    • @oluwaogundiran
      @oluwaogundiran ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wes' is the most emotive if you ask me.
      Edit: From a second listen, I'll have to say that this just might be the more emotive rendition of the two covers.
      It took me a while (years, actually) to get to listening to another version from the original and the same with Wes Montgomery's. Intriguingly, George Benson was my earliest direct influence to jazz (and Louis Armstrong) but today, I'll shout Wes' name anywhere. C'est la vie.

    Last time I saw him was at the Hampton Jazz Festival - 2017 I think. He was touted as the headliner in print and media, along with - of all people, Fantasia. Turns out he was only allowed to do an hour-long set and she closed out the show - with her quivering lip. What a disappointment. If I wanted to see Fantasia, I would have gone to a Fantasia show. After ten minutes I was walking out the door. May as well had burned that couple hundred dollars using lighter fluid as the accelerant.
