  • When the Strymon Deco first came out a few years ago I didnt really know who or what it was for. Since then this pedal has flown under the radar of most guitar players out there, but after owning one for a year now I can say I think this is one of the BEST guitar effects pedals that nobody talks about.

I came to ask how you fit the deco into the signal chain you used in this video, indeed, what else was in your signal chain.
Question still stands but this course seems like the perfect course for me, especially the delay part.

Rhett: Your work just keeps getting better and better man - it's no wonder you're growth has been nothing short of phenomenal but I'm proud to say I've been watching you since nearly your start. So great to see your development on the tube. And I've said it before, but I'll say it again - there is something so wonderful about your on-camera delivery and demeanor that speaks to people. While full of information, you never get bogged down by specs but rather are able to stay focused on the key aspects you want to highlight for whatever it is you're talking about. Your delivery is professional, smooth but somehow also very "real" and sincere and never contrived. Honestly, that's pretty rare on youtube gear channels but the ones that do manage that combination are the ones that succeed. Keep it up man - you know you're doing something right when folks like Pete Thorn takes inspiration from your tour Vlogs and starts doing those kinds of things as well. :) Cheers brotha and stay safe....

I totally appreciate where you're coming from. once you can play a couple riffs and phrases that sound pleasing to your ears, that's the time to start delving into tonal shaping and finding your sound, I think. If you haven't already, maybe get a looper pedal.... Record a phrase or riff that you really like and loop it over and over. While it's looping, start to experiment with each of the knobs, finding the sweet spot, sometimes you'll have several, depending on what kind of pedal it is and what the parameter is you're affecting. That's a good way to start, and then gain as much knowledge as you can about what's actually happening when you twist each one of those knobs by either watching TH-cam videos or talking to someone in the know. Just some tips that I gleaned by messing around with all of this stuff for a couple decades and going to school for audio engineering. I'm free to answer questions occasionally, if you like, you can make a comment and I'll comment back, if I see it. Cheers!

Btw, that “squeaking” sound that happens when you start your 2 track is not because of the machine but rather the tape. It has too much humidity. Ampex was notorious for this. Heat you tape in an oven 100deg for at least 4 to 8 hours.
Keep your tape in a box in a dry place when not in use. Thx

I never want to turn it off. “ I’ve never commented on your videos but I watch all of them. Keep up the great work. I love your playing and your TH-cam channel is great also.

My sleeper guitar pedal is the EarthQuaker Devices Rainbow Machine. It's gotten a reputation as being "the sparkle box" where you push a button and magical unicorns come out. But if you take the time to tweak its settings just right, it can make a fantastic chorus, slapback echo, harmonizer, and even an ambient effect. It's kind of a "secret weapon." You see it on a lot of people's walls in their videos, but most people don't talk about it.

@Rhett Shull, all the modulation effects possible with the Deco, are also possible spliting the signal chain and running the signal straight on one side and with a delay of any type on the other, provided it can do very short delays and also have a mix/effect level control that allows to have just the wet signal and and a feedback control that alows for single or at most 2-3 repetitions, the time range for each effect is more or less lile this:
    Phaser: 6-12 ms
    Flanger: 12-20 ms
    Automatic Double Tracker: 20-35 ms
Bellow 6ms you won't perceive any alteration on the signal because it would be too fast for our ears to pick, and above 35 ms a distinct echo becomes noticeable, and we are in the slapback delay territory. If you put a pitch vibrato before the delay in its side of the path, and set the delay time to ADT, then you have a chorus.
For more extreme effects just run more delays on the chain, but the subsequent delays after the first should have the mix at 50%.
Also if you're running delay times above 35 ms (echo), the clarity of the delay produced is increased, because you have more control over the amount of dry and wet signals than the effect level ou mix knob of a delay pedal.
Another useful side effect of this setup is that you can either run it in stereo to have a more spatial effect, or you can joing both signals after the delay and have a mono effect.
As of pedals that were undsrated at the time, the whole Lovetone line was more or less like that, then folks like Kirk Hammett, Ed O'Brien, Johny Greenwood, the Edge, Steohen Malkmus, and other famous guys started to buy them and sudenly there was a 3 years waiting list to get a pedal until Vlad Naslas and Daniel Coggins decided to close the shop in 2001.

Tested it against the Keeley Oxblood, MXR Sugar Drive and Lovepedal Valve Reamer and they all sounded like a joke compared to the Steelpark; like when you don't even bother to fiddle with the controls because you hear immediately that they don't play in that league.

The Deco seems like an awesome pedal. My other favorite TH-cam guitar teacher, Eric Haugen, uses one quite a bit, with excellent results, too.
My pick for Best Guitar Pedal No One Talks About is the Blackout Effectors (sadly defunct boutique maker) Mantra OD. It feels like it’s the secret sauce in my tone, in large part to the Baxandall EQ that sounds awesome on any setting (no muffled lows or shrill highs). From Andy’s ProGuitarShop demo:
“The Blackout Effectors Mantra is capable of bringing together two worlds of overdrive. This unique pedal can provide vintage overdrive as well as incredibly dirty and crusty distortion tones. With a whole lot of crunch and thunder on tap, the Blackout Effectors Mantra is comfortable in both domains of overdrive. The secret to the Mantra is that is utilizes an amp-like circuit that has multiple cascaded MOSFET and JFET gain stages. It is handmade with discrete components and no diode clipping. This design creates a completely organic and touch sensitive overdrive that also provides deep and resonant tone when you clean up with your guitars volume knob. Not only will the Mantra meld well with single coils or humbuckers, it will equally be at home with Fender or Marshall voiced amplifiers due to its Baxandall-style EQ. With this feature, both Treble and Bass controls interact dynamically with each other for scooped mids or mid-emphasized crunch.”

I had a beautiful tape 4 track tascam reel, that I used extensively. Our drummer did something far more insane. Was finally recording my band with it, and while partying after finally getting all the tracks down our drummer came in tripping on acid and decided to create a "music ball" by pulling all the tape off the reels and rolling it into a ball. Then he unscrewed the back off it and tried to "fix" the problem by installing a "psychic antenae", and pulled the weed plant growing out back yard and a bunch of dirt and put it into the back and screwed the back plate back on, thus destroying the machine. The band was broken up by the time that night was over. Man the 90s was a fun time to be alive, but occasionally utterly confusing lol. A decade and a half later I brought an 8 track tascam reel to reel , but ended up selling it again because honestly the pro tools setup just worked so much easier. Kinda regret it now, Tape for all its hassles sounds amazing.

The Deco is my #1 favorite pedal. The flanging is unparalleled and the saturation section is my favorite clean / low gain drive sound. The phaser, chorus and delay sounds are also very special.
Something else i like is that once you spend some time with it you realize most of the sounds are dialed in with 1 knob and MAYBE flicking the switch. Its very simple to operate for the amount of sounds it has.

Just copy a recorded item to a new track - then shift position, pan, EQ, compress, use different ambient sends, maybe pitch shift, etc. to create these effects to any degree.

Most interesting pedal I’ve acquired in awhile is the Walrus audio Julia, pretty amazing what you can do with it, really fattened up my sound and has a huge range of very different tones, it’s a chorus vibrato delay reverb pseudo stereo pedal the best I can describe it, probably not a sleeper, but I doubt most know what it does and how good it sounds when setup for subtle tone... I run a Keeley compressor in front of it and it makes everything else in the chain come alive... I’m sure I could get the same tones with my helix but it would be extremely complex to do without a bunch of hassle...

My sleeper gear pick is embarrassing but I feel I must share it so other guitarists might avoid passing it by .. it had actually been out a few years before I even pulled up a video on it.. I've had several drum machines over the yrs, but nothing quite like the Beat Buddy.. in fact, I was so impressed I ended up buying it along with the premium SD card which included a year's subscription that the company would add to each month.. I think I ended up having over $500 in it after I was finished lol.. I guess the name seemed a bit amateurish as to the silly reason I had avoided it for so long.. but to this day, I still feel like considering the simplicity & tonal quality, it's one of the most important pieces of gear a guitarist should have in their arsenal..

  • @absea7918

Great video. I have had the Deco on my board for over 4 years, and after downsizing my board several times, it's still on there. I use it as a foundation overdrive, and modulation (flange). I use a small 18W Marshall combo, so have a great base tone, and use the Deco to sweeten the drive, and use for flange/chorus when that's needed. Its pricey, but as you say it's like buying a drive and a modulation pedal. Keep up the great content!
