This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "what are the 3 pedals on the piano for" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (search on google ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.
Feel free to donate to me! I'll also take Cash App and Venmo to help you with your loaded bank! Ahahh, thank you! On a real note tho, that'd be a jammin acoustic set 🤘🏻
I learned how to play without any fx pedals at all so I figured out how to make it sound like I was using delay, trem.. I had no idea they were using pedals..lol..
Been playing 40 years now and just a good amp with a gain stage and a great guitar is all I "need". But as far as wants, I like having as much as possible at my disposal, because you never know what may make something sit in the mix better.
I totally agree with fuzz pedal, but I also think it is essential to have a wah! Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but there is a lot that can be done with a wah other than the norm. Great for changing tone ... find the right sound and just leave it. Amp in a box: just got a Joyo AC Tone ... I am enjoying it immensely! Using it through D.I. box into recording mixer. Much lighter than carrying the amp, don't have to worry about miking the amp, it sounds great, and it takes pedals well!
1. Reverb 2. Delay 3. Tremolo 4. Looper 5. Some kind of “transparent”/light overdrive Stoked to finally see the Tone Bender in a video since that backstage journal :D
Satilla gtr sometimes, it depends. I play in a band with some friends and we’ll use it to loop ideas and jam over them to write stuff but then divide up parts when we turn them into full songs
Great video My ever changing setup at the mo is - Roland gr55 out to 1 amp and the gr55 guitar output to boss ds1 > dod dfx94 (delay sampler) > tc electronic trinity reverb > behringer rv600 reverb > ehx superego out to another amp
This is great! I was really expecting something like tuner-wah-overdrive-delay-chorus but I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for putting this together Rhett
The last “character pedal” I got was the boss SY-1. The sounds you can get out of this pedal are amazing and so inspiring. Really has taken my playing to another level
Tone game changers: PisodiYAUWOT -emma electronic, BB preamp -xotic, D&M used as clean boosts and Super phat mod full range - keeley and Faux tape echo v2-wampler. Thanks Rhett!
Wah OD EQ Mod Delay For the longest time I gigged with boss vintage Wah, Boss, CS-2, (OD-3, SD-1, or Ibanez TS-9), DS-1, CH-1, and DD-3. Covered pretty much everything and the Chorus could be quickly tweaked to get faux rotary/trem effect. But today in 2019 I'm using a Helix about 95% of the time and have my old HD500X as a back-up. Additionally I always have a Boss CS-3 comp and BD-2 bluesdriver in my backup bag just in case. I have the HD-500X setup in stompbox mode and can pop the BD-2 in front of it for "go-too" overdrive/boost that can get me what I need very quickly. The Boss bluesdriver can really cover a lot of ground from overdrive to distortion and just straight ahead clean boost even. Back to the Helix; it's got pretty much everything in terms of effects/amp modelling, IRs, In/outs, routing options. I didn't like the PODs, etc. for the longest time until I heard myself playing through one from a DVD video recording of a Christmas program I was playing at our Church using the X3-Live. Been a believer ever since. Since then, as I've moved to the HD-500X, and now Helix and always keep the older unit as a back-up as long as it's still in good working condition. I still have all my old amps and a couple book cases of effects pedals I acquired over my 50 years of playing guitar including some I've built myself.
Great video, thanks! Fender clean amp with reverb 1) compressor 2) delay 3) chorus 4) Texas Screamer/Tube Screamer 5) Amp in a box for what I want to play
Hi Rhett, here's my pedal board : Boss SD-1 + original Sansamp, Boss DM-2 + Nux timer (up to 1 second), Akaï tuner, EHX stereo electric mistress, Morley wha-volume. Amps : 1979 Fender Vibrolux reverb and Roland JC 120. Agree for amps in pedal and cabinet simulators to avoid carrying heavy amps for gigs.. But I play bass in my actual band, (I love playing both since 40 years now..) so actually all that heavy stuff stays home ! Just carry my bass and my MB-212 Gallien Krueger for gigs, 350 real watts for 18 kilos, neodynium speakers is a great invention.
My essential pedals are the GFI Systems CabZeus, Strymon DECO, J. Rockett Archer Ikon and the EQD Dispatch Master ... my add-on pedals are amp-in-a-box in front of the Ikon, and a flanger or trem pedal. The CabZeus and DECO are ace together ... foundation for wet-dry set-up.
Great video Rhett :) I would go with: 1. Reverb (in my case Electro Harmonix Holy Grail) 2.Overdrive / Booster 3. Wah wah 4. E bow (as sth extra - I know IT is not a pedal) 5. Delay
Very fresh take on this topic! This has shed new light on how one should envision one's rig. And this also finished convincing me to buying Keeley's Synth-1 at one point. Anyways, my essential pedals: Two Notes Le Crunch, Keeley Caverns, and when I play bass my TC SpectraComp.
1. Bad Cat 2-Tone 2. Benson Preamp (any of these two pedals work both as fuzz and amp emulator pedals and I use my guitar volume knob to go from clean to fuzz and everything in between) 3. Cab emulator with reactive load to play my clean amp on any volume and go fully DI, so two previous pedals can show themselves at their best and make power tubes cooking 4. Digitech Whammy - amazing tool with great tracking 5. Synth pedals (or character pedals as you call them) 6. MultiFX pedal for delays, tremolos and reverbs to further shape my synth sounds or occasionally as an effect for guitar sound
1. Tube Screamer or BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver 2. Big Muff (I use the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker) 3. High gain distortion such as the BOSS MD-2 Mega Distortion (my current fave) 4. MXR Smart Gate for noise suppression 5. Something like a BOSS DD-3/DD-5 Digital Delay or an MXR Phase 90 That's my list for pedals every guitarist should have. Rock guitarists should have a wah like the Dunlop Crybaby. I suppose the high gain distortion might not be for every guitarist, so someone could instead substitute in a boost or preamp pedal or a chorus pedal. Examples are the Electro-Harmonix Linear Power Booster boost pedal and the BOSS CE-5 Chorus Ensemble pedal, or even Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Chorus. Guitarists that have more dynamic or soft playing styles should definitely have a compressor like the MXR Dyna Comp
1) Comp - Plush Effects 2) Overdrive - Timmy 3) Distortion - Hermida Zen-Drive 4) Echo - Strymon Tape 5) Reverb (special effects) - Specular Tempus 6) Clean Boost For leads I used to have a and play a fuzz regularly, back in the day - a Morley Fuzz/Waw pedal from the 70's. I will take your advice and try a few out.
1. Compressor 2. Clean boost 3. JCM800 preamp -- In effects loop: 4. Chorus/Modulation 5. Reverb I guess the JCM800 isn't a pedal, and it doesn't have a loop without a mod, but that's a great signal chain. And who needs an overdrive/distortion pedal when you have an over driven preamp, a volume knob and a boost pedal? (Can't forget a channel switching mod with volume compensation for the low sensitivity channel). I have more than that on board, but those are my essentials, except the compressor; I just figured it'd encompass more than a wah, and be more useful than a tuner pedal, as those can be found in other forms, so as to save room in the list for the effect pedals.
EHX Oceans 11 reverb, MXR Echoplex pedal, Catalinbread DLS, Fender Pinwheel, DOD Carcosa Fuzz, Henretta Purple Octopus...my chain back to front. I agree that a good Fuzz should be in the mix, for me since I play through a 5e3 clone, my reverb pedal is the most important sound enhancer. The amp breaks up very fast, so riding the guitar volume yields a broad range of tones. Adding the Fuzz, and modulation provides a lot of ambience to the sound. The biggest part of your sound is how your guitar interacts with your amp. Still playing with the amp in a box concept
Amp and cab simulators appeal to me enough to do some research and possibly add to my rig. My valve head is low Wattage, and has volume, tone, and gain controls, a preamp tube and a power tube, and no effects loop. While I'm getting a satisfying range of tones from it so far, I'd love to expand on the possibilities without going crazy on an amp stack. Being new to exploring guitar effects, my essentials so far are: noise reducer, compressor, and boost (my boost is also a preamp, and has optional distortion, with or without gain saturation). My "for fun" pedals are: fuzz, phaser, flanger, chorus, and delay. I'm very eager to add reverb and tremolo to the mix!
I use quite a few, but I enjoy playing ambient music. So I have..tuner, compressor, pitch fork, pog, superego, la lady(can set for fuzz and od)xts atomic od, vol pedal, exp pedal, slo reverb, dig dual delay,el cap tape echo, tera echo, timeline, dark sun, big sky, boomerang. It covers quite a bit.
You along with a number of other youtubers have really inspired me to play more music, meet fellow local musicians, play live and make youtube videos! Tha is for all the cool content Rhett
Before last week I would say a tuner pedal is the only necessity, but after 25 years of playing, I just got my first tubescreamer. Immediately started playing a bunch of songs I didn't know I knew. I could also add a different drive, reverb, delay, and boost.
First I want to say that I have watched a ton of your vids and have gleaned so much useful information that has taken me to the next level. With that said maybe I haves missed the point here but as far as 5 pedals on a bird I feel like there are so many things you didn’t mention like the basics, for us guys who don’t have as much to invest but still want THAT tone. Compressor sustainers, EQ pedal, tube driver…etc. I feel like the things you displayed are for those who want to push on after the basics are acquired. Again, I truly appreciate your info insight and just some damn good guitar playing. And maybe I missed the point here but if I’m building a pedal board I’m getting a few things first before some of the things you mentioned. RESPECTFULLY!!! Keep those vids coming!! Like you, no plan B!
Rhett, after literally over fifty years of playing (ok, playing WITH) electric guitars, I’ve recently bought my very first fuzz pedal. Jury is still out, so I’m not going to specify, but cab sims a must have? Dude, I’m not a gigging musician, just a very longtime hobbyist. Got the amps I want (well, not all of ‘em, but....) And I have tons of respect for your opinions and experience. Keep on teaching us, please, Rhett. Thanks for sharing, ese.
Great commentary! There should have been some mention of Wah-pedals, which I find to be the most personal, emotional and directly-controlled form of expression when playing guitar. Wah-pedals do more than "cry", they burst out "joy" as well. Cheers!
I like having a Chorus/Flanger. Just awesome when having to single string your way thru a pre-chorus or interlude in a song. Next would be like an overdrive (Boss Blues Driver). Good for crunch from a clean channel, character and drive from an overdrive channel. Delay pedal is next. Great for a number of different things so I ain’t typing. Next would be a Wah. Awesome pedal if you’re gonna play "25 or 6 to 4" but equally cool 😎 as a wah-wah or exploring the different tones you’ll have access to. Last is an EQ pedal. Depending on what you want or need may determine the size. A 6 band isn’t going to do much but can come in handy if your amp doesn’t have a boost option. Set the tone flat but up your volume. Hit it when time for a solo. You don’t change anything in tone but you’ve upped your volume by 6-8 dB. Larger EQ's can do the same but if you invest the extra $$ in getting one I would think it would be used to help with a tone issue. Check with some of the lists to see what order the pedals should be placed in to maximize their abilities. Most are the same.
Compressor Ns-2 must have for single coil Reverb x2 Delay x 2 OD x 2 Boost Distortion (fuzz) Chorus/vibe Volume pedal That’s what’s on my board! Oh and a cab sim
Bare Essentials no preferential order: -Looper -Compressor -Overdrive (prefer an OCD type) -Modulation (I like a multi-effects pedal for this) -Delay -I use my amp’s tank reverb (controlled with a foot switch)
So do I. But if your amp is old I recomend that you swap your tank for a new one (they are not expensive). When I did that to my JCM 600 it make a big difference to the Clean channel (but not to the OD channel).
My essentials 1) Blues Driver (Boost of Choice) 2) Angry Driver or Power Stack (Amp in a Box) 3) Delay w/tap (Canyon or Flashback) 4) Vibe/Uni vibe (Vibra Clone or Micro Vibe) 5) Tuner (Polytune) Currently, this all there is on my board, and i might could live forever with just this. And to add to the mix, in the spirit of the topic...I just got an Afterneath for those experimental times
Im just intermediate and this is my board (in order). I built it with advice from more exp musician friends of mine. 1. Xotic SP Compressor (almost got the Keeley one, i tried it out and loved it too) 2. JHS Clover Preamp (my Telecaster really comes alive with it and I can control the lows good) 3. Ibanez Tubescreamer TS9 (DUHH) 4. MXR phase 95 (for when I wanna go Budget Van Halen) 5. MXR carbon copy analog delay 6. Keeley Caverns Reverb + delay combo ( I love having a double delay. One in quarter and the other one in eights) Next thing for me is definitely a Fuzz or a Wah I cant decide!!!
The Earthquaker "Afterneath " never shuts off on my board. It's either the pedal that is the focus of my sound, or it's a low drone in the background . I'm glad I gave it a try!! My next purchase will be the "old blood noise Dark star"
Rhett - thank you for ALL the info posted accompanying this video. I purchased a Royal Jelly pedal used in your studio recording video with Noah Guthrie.
I can't say 5 everyone needs, but I can say if you have 5 or more, get a boost. Even if you dont have a big chain or line a boost just makes the character of each different guitar and guitar pickup really shine through so much more.
My list: 1. Wah (I modded mine) 2. Good OD as a boost or a standalone drive 3. Chorus 4. Phaser 5. Delay I use the drive channel of my amp as well as my amp's reverb. Also I did not count the tuner pedal, as I assume we are talking about 'FX'.
For me, a volume pedal between your dirt and your delay / reverb is critical, because you can adjust the volume of your dirt without affecting the gain.
I Headrush- but your advice on ‘character pedals’ is right-on... perfect for answering the question: “What should I put into my HR effects loops?” Good advice.
Yea, I don't like fuzz (although I like it sometimes when others use it). But I don't even like distortion pedals (although I own one) and I grew up in and around the birth of thrash metal, and play a lot of different genres of music. I like distortion from amps best. As for essentials, well, amp distortion is the only "essential" I feel I must have. But I've always loved effects and if anything I over-used them in the past. But to choose 4 "must-haves": echo, modulator, reverb, and wah pedals. Still, a great guitar and amp is all I need to be happy.
1. Tuner 2. wah 2a. Phaser (gosh - how could I forget! And there is only one: MXR90 script handwired with no LED) 2b. Fuzz (I settled on a tone bender 3 clone that will also give me Muff tones. I run it VERY low gain) 3. boost (I use a TS with 0 gain) 4. chorus 5. tremolo 6. Delay 7. Leslie sim 8. looper (just for practicing) Sorry it is more than 5. And a decent amp. I just fell in love with a Traynor YCV50b.
.....Well, I've owned & used quite a few pedals in my time but I seem to go with a "less is more" approach since the early '80s. My signal chain is 2 in front (tuner & compressor) & 2 in EX loop (echo & chorus) & has been like this for about 35 years now. I can set it up & tare it down quickly & I know where everything is/what it does. It's reliable & EZ to use. I buy high-end everything so the pedals are quiet, rugged & sound great. The only other pedal is the amp channel switch on the ground (usually next to my mic stand)....& that's it.....Now, for pedals/gear that I've used over the years that got me to where I am today? I started with a 1967 Marshall fuzz box that used a flashlight battery with 9-volt + & - terminals (it came with the 100 plexi I bought back in high school 1972. took all the money I saved up to then being a 13 yr. old) That Marshall fuzz box was only used for solos & with the "fuzz" effect off & the gain vol up. It (& a crybaby wah) made my Marshall sound like Jeff Beck off "Rough & Ready" without breaking the sound barrier & that was the sound I wanted then. Next was an echoplex tape echo. Phase pedals weren't commercially available yet but when they were, my 1st was a 3 switch Mystro. then when I was working a bit more I got an MXR 19" rack DDL (the one with the removable chip-cards in it) a Yamaha analog chorus/delay box (that went on tour with me through the mid-west for 3 years in a plastic milk crate) that took a beating & worked every show I did without fail. I then got an RE-555 that had everything I used then, chorus, delay, reverb in a 19" rack & used that till the digital pedals started showing up at GC round the mid 80's. From then on it's been pretty much the rigg I described at the beginning of this read. I've come full circle & pretty happy these days with my Mesa MK-5, 100 combo & 4 pedals.
Tuner, EQ, looper then whatever two suit your tone/aim - drive and reverb probably for me but with a two channel amp chorus and reverb. Two channel amp with own reverb then chorus and delay. I currently have my favourite global stomps - drive, eq, chorus, verb, delay all going into a scene pedal (amp in a box, helix stomp) looper. Never been happier
I run a JHS Bonsai (9 Tube Screamers) into a Boss Bluesdriver into a Klon into a Delay then D'Addario Tuner into a JHS buffered splitter into 2 amps which have Reverb and Tremolo built in. Great video Rhett as always ! :-) P.S. I only started using pedals about 4 years ago, prior to that I played 43 yrs plugged straight in to my amp.
For distortion pedals check out anything made by Brian Wampler. I use the Pinnacle and whereas other dist pedals sound thin and tinny when you roll your guitar volume back, the Pinnacle absolutely shines. IMHO your guitar volume is the acid test for whatever amp and pedal combo you're using.
I just got a Fulltone ‘70 pedal yesterday and it blew me away. For those who don’t know it is an exact circuit copy of EJ’s blue Fuzz Face that he used on Tones and A Via Musicom. Get one, you will not be disappointed.

Chase Bliss Thermae is my character pedal. Great material. I visited righteous guitars because of you. It was before the pandemic and I had a great visit. Demoed the black suhr hss they had there and keep thinking about it. I enjoy seeing your thoughts on different aspects of guitar. Btw, I really enjoyed your volante and deco videos. Cheers!
I'v got a Voxmini5 amplifier that dos almost everything, but cook your breakfast. I have a Rowin noise gate for my 64 single coil telecaster. Its realy good but takes away a bit of the overtones. For my Gibson 59 and my Stratocaster 2016, A ibanez tube screamer ts10 that I bought in the 80:ts is the best overdrive. A MXR dyna comp thats amazing. And a looper Blacksheep that does the job. I am 63 years old and thats all the pedals I need. I've got the minivox to do the reverb, flanger, eko and many other things. I've had Fender twins and Marshalls on stage but now in older days just plying at home my minivox is the thing. Sorry my English is so bad, but I try. The best from Sweden. Just keep on playing !!!
Frist off I really enjoy your videos, have seen them all, and for me the best channel around. I have always been a "pure amp guy"... But today that changed, with this video and many others of yours in mind (and a lot of listening to The Rival Sons lately) I bought my first Fuzz that I really enjoyed- a MXR Sub Machine. It really changed everything. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work.
My favorite pedals are Tumnus Steel string Empress tape delay Anasounds Element spring reverb Almost any chorus or flanger For being able to get almost any sound a multifx pedal like a zoom
I love ya Rhett, but I am going a different direction. A Helix into a Thomas Blug AMP1 and then into a Mesa Boogie 2x12 cab. That combo right there will give you anything you could possibly dream up. The Helix is self explanatory but the AMP1 is the best amp I have EVER used. 100w four channel tube amp the size of a EHX pedal and fits right on your board. Those two pieces of technology are the best thing ever created in the world of guitar. You can substitute any cab of your choice into that equation, I just happened to score a Mesa 2x12 at a steal and love the sound. I saved for six months to buy my Helix and everyday I turn it on I have a new toy because they've packed so much into it. Hell, just rearranging the signal path will completely change the tone even with the same effects! And then you can tweak the levels of each effect...on and on and on...
Mine: Boss DS-2 - Ibanez Wah - MXR Micro Amp - Line 6 HX Stomp + Dual Footswitch or Expression Pedal (the stomp for basically everything and the essentials for a john frusciante tone)
+100 on the fuzz. I’ve got 3 of them, an MXR Hendrix Octave Fuzz, a Wampler Velvet Fuzz, but the one I cant live without is my Keeley Psi Fuzz! I love my delays too but other must have pedal is my Fulltone Mini Dejavibe. When I got back into playing electric after 5 years of just acoustic the first thing I bought, before an amp or a guitar, was the Dejavibe. It sat in my shelf for two months before I bought an amp and an axe. Third one creeping in is my Neunaber Immerse. Never thought much about reverbs till that one. I could probably play the rest of my life with just those three pedals, but why would I when there are so many more out their to play around and experiment with? I need to try an amp I’m a box and a cab sim. Thanks for the video, cheers!
My essential pedalboard rig: 1) Line 6 HX Stomp 2) Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb 3) Bogner Ecstasy Red 4) Keeley Compressor Plus 5) JHS Superbolt v.2 I think, that’s pretty enough to have the killer tones anywhere :) it doesn’t matter for me at all where should I play: even at home or at the rehearsal or on the gig, It sound AMAZING anywhere :)
my pedalboard is collecting dust siting in its case ever since I got a Mooer GE300.......Has everything I need simple, plug in and play . Never worry about backlines that can suck bad....Great video and valid points especially where amp in a box and cab sim is concerned. My pedalboard has a 2 channel Mooer Micro Preamp which has Cab Sim option 8f I need it to go DI...Rhett you should demo the Mooer GE 300 , the Synth program is really good ! Cheers!
I have settled on a Clusterfuzz, and I went through quite a few fuzz pedals it sounds great, and you have 5 different clipping options, and you can mix in an 8 bit sound for a gated fuzz sound.
My rig start from the overdrive & distortion, for me is the heart of sound. I like JHS AT+, Friedman be od, Ibanez Tube screamer, Metal Zone, J-rocket Rockaway. I love your channel, I discovered a lot of things. Cheers
Killer video Rhett! I have not found my favorite fuzz pedal or tone yet. i LOVE hearing other player's fuzz tone but have never been happy with mine! That Tone Bender makes me want to pull my fuzz back out and see if I can make it sound like what's in my head.
I've used multieffects since the 90s, a collection of pedals is foreign to me. 1) BOSS GT-1000 2) I dunno, maybe buy 3) something cool 4) with the leftover 5) cash from pedals
I'm still a total beginner and I think, I'm gonna be one for the next five to ten years. I only have a dual footswitch for my two-channel amp, one switch switches between channels 1 and 2, the other switch turns the gain on channel 2 on and off.
Every once in a while I find a vid that I wish I could like more than once. I like it, keep watching, then exit full screen and look at the button and it’s already pressed, what a shame
Even though I’m late to the party I do want to say that every guitar player should have an eq pedal and a compression pedal. You can really shape your tone with both of them, and can make a bad amp sound good.
Aside from compressors and boosts which you do need, the 5 most important pedals on my board, not in order are, wah wah, fuzz, overdrive, delay and reverb. Side note: if I can only have one overdrive, it’s definitely gonna be the Ibanez Tube Screamer. That pedal is so versatile it’s not even funny. I use that pedal for tones as dirty as Metallica and Slipknot, to tones as clean and beautiful as Dire Straits and Eric Johnson’s Cliffs of Dover.
It's absolutely bananas that it's taken this long for guitarists to have viable DI options. I've run sound at my church for the last decade and can't remember the last time I even saw a bass amp, let alone had to mic one up.
My top 5: 1. Tuner 2. Tubescreamer 3. High gain drive 4. Delay 5. Comp or Noise Gate Even when using modelers this is how I set up most of my presets, except using amp models instead of drive. Also, it astounds me how some people spend $200 on their boutique drive pedal and then go on stage without a tuner...
My Choices - 1) PolyTune Tuner 2) JHS Bonsai Tubescreamer 3) Strymon Sunset 4) Chorus? 5) Strymon Iridium or MCAB + 6) TC Electonics Flashback 2 7) TC Electronics Hall of Fame 2 8) Boss RC-3 Looper *** Chorus , Wah, and EQ I haven’t decided on yet. *** I wish the Strymon Sunset was a bright Yellow like the JHS Charlie Brown 🤔
Informative video! The Electro-Harmonix B9 Organ Pedal is one of those unique pedals that make you play in ways you might not have considered. I also feel the TC Electronic PolyTune is one pedal that deserves a space on the pedal board. You can certainly tune in many ways but life is so much easier with it!
I like a big ol pedalboard as much as anybody but all I really need is 90% of the time is: an amp with good cleans and a tube like feel , a bit of dirt(from a pedal or another ch on the amp) and a short analog delay(better than verb in most live situations).
My have to have pedals are my Xotic EP booster... it’s pretty much always on. My Xotic BBPlus is my go to drive. My Strymon El Capistan is my top delay. I love my old Fulltone Deja Vibe. My fuzz of choice is the V1 Walrus Jupiter. All these sound killer in any amp and work my Strats or my Les Paul. Great video Rhett.
I really love that this episode was very useful suggestions, but not very obvious suggestions. Honestly, amp cab simulator and amp in a box is a really good idea for me. My fiancée lives with me now and I’ve been trying to get better quality ways to quietly record. Which is hard when normally I want the tone of a cranked up Marshall 😅.
Rhett, have you played the El Musico Loco Siamese Scream? One of the Last pedals I'd ever part with for sure, the thing is massive sounding! NO ONE ever talks about it, but if you need a super hi gain thick fuzz with tons of treble and bass, and STILL reacts to wahs, man, the thing just kills! So surprised more people haven't got hip to it.
I reached the same conclusions as you for a cab sim, but I feel like an HX Stomp is a better option. You get impulse responses, cabs, plus amp models if you want them and the ability to fill in "bonus"effects.
Ibanez CP10 (Japan market) unbelievable compressor and sustain effects. Boss Flanger BF2 as a mid boost and sometime flanger. TS9 tube screamer. Eq in the loop, MXR 10 band usually, Whatever delay you prefer. Too many good delays to single out just one. EHX, Digi, Strymon, MXR, tried them and like them in different situations.

Completely agree.. Reverb, overdrive and a wah.. Play anything..
Get a simple delay pedal, you can find some cool slapback country/surf rock sounds! People been using pedals for a long time :)

Been playing 40 years now and just a good amp with a gain stage and a great guitar is all I "need". But as far as wants, I like having as much as possible at my disposal, because you never know what may make something sit in the mix better.
I'm soooo old school. When I think of 5 pedals:
1.) Delay.
2.) Distortion.
3.) Chorus.
4.) Flanger.
5.) Whah
And maybe reverb and compressor instead of chorus and flanger or all
In this exact signal chain

2.miku

Great video Rhett!!!
Shawn, how about some links to those pedals? I'm in desperate need of them as well.
So THAT's your secret...
I need all 5
What, no Blame Shifter?
@@2tallB Haha!! That equipment is usually reserved for the producers and engineers.
At first, I really didn’t think I needed a fuzz, but you’re right. When you find the right one, it’s like unlocking a sound you never knew you had.
I still don't feel I need one. I think I'd just choose them from a multi.
1. Reverb
2. Delay
3. Tremolo
4. Looper
5. Some kind of “transparent”/light overdrive
Stoked to finally see the Tone Bender in a video since that backstage journal :D
Satilla gtr sometimes, it depends. I play in a band with some friends and we’ll use it to loop ideas and jam over them to write stuff but then divide up parts when we turn them into full songs
Thank you for actually demonstrating the pedal's sounds instead of merely holding them up and describing the sound
Great video
My ever changing setup at the mo is - Roland gr55 out to 1 amp and the gr55 guitar output to boss ds1 > dod dfx94 (delay sampler) > tc electronic trinity reverb > behringer rv600 reverb > ehx superego out to another amp
This is great! I was really expecting something like tuner-wah-overdrive-delay-chorus but I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for putting this together Rhett
Oh! For me, I'd say...
1: clean boost of some flavor
2: overdrive
3: delay
4: tremolo
5: reverb
Pretty basic setup really
The last “character pedal” I got was the boss SY-1. The sounds you can get out of this pedal are amazing and so inspiring. Really has taken my playing to another level
Tone game changers: PisodiYAUWOT -emma electronic, BB preamp -xotic, D&M used as clean boosts and Super phat mod full range - keeley and Faux tape echo v2-wampler. Thanks Rhett!

For the longest time I gigged with boss vintage Wah, Boss, CS-2, (OD-3, SD-1, or Ibanez TS-9), DS-1, CH-1, and DD-3.
1. Tuner
2. Looper
3. Compressor
4. Equalizer

Fender clean amp with reverb
1) compressor
2) delay
3) chorus
4) Texas Screamer/Tube Screamer
5) Amp in a box for what I want to play
Great video Rhett :) I would go with:
1. Reverb (in my case Electro Harmonix Holy Grail)
2.Overdrive / Booster
3. Wah wah
4. E bow (as sth extra - I know IT is not a pedal)
1. Bad Cat 2-Tone
2. Benson Preamp (any of these two pedals work both as fuzz and amp emulator pedals and I use my guitar volume knob to go from clean to fuzz and everything in between)
3. Cab emulator with reactive load to play my clean amp on any volume and go fully DI, so two previous pedals can show themselves at their best and make power tubes cooking
4. Digitech Whammy - amazing tool with great tracking
5. Synth pedals (or character pedals as you call them)
6. MultiFX pedal for delays, tremolos and reverbs to further shape my synth sounds or occasionally as an effect for guitar sound
1. Tube Screamer or BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver
2. Big Muff (I use the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker)
3. High gain distortion such as the BOSS MD-2 Mega Distortion (my current fave)
4. MXR Smart Gate for noise suppression
5. Something like a BOSS DD-3/DD-5 Digital Delay or an MXR Phase 90
That's my list for pedals every guitarist should have.
1) Comp - Plush Effects
2) Overdrive - Timmy
3) Distortion - Hermida Zen-Drive
4) Echo - Strymon Tape
5) Reverb (special effects) - Specular Tempus
6) Clean Boost For leads
I used to have a and play a fuzz regularly, back in the day - a Morley Fuzz/Waw pedal from the 70's. I will take your advice and try a few out.
1. Compressor
2. Clean boost
3. JCM800 preamp
-- In effects loop:
4. Chorus/Modulation
5. Reverb
I guess the JCM800 isn't a pedal, and it doesn't have a loop without a mod, but that's a great signal chain.
Rhett that's gotta be one of the greatest direct tones I've ever heard.
I should also add that since I switched to p90 guitars, I use less drive on my pedals, and use the volume and tone on the guitar a lot more.
Compressor
Ns-2 must have for single coil
Reverb x2
Delay x 2
OD x 2
Boost
Distortion (fuzz)
Chorus/vibe
Volume pedal
That’s what’s on my board!
Oh and a cab sim
Bare Essentials no preferential order:
-Looper
-Compressor
-Overdrive (prefer an OCD type)
-Modulation (I like a multi-effects pedal for this)
-Delay
-I use my amp’s tank reverb (controlled with a foot switch)
So do I. But if your amp is old I recomend that you swap your tank for a new one (they are not expensive). When I did that to my JCM 600 it make a big difference to the Clean channel (but not to the OD channel).
My essentials
1) Blues Driver (Boost of Choice)
2) Angry Driver or Power Stack (Amp in a Box)
3) Delay w/tap (Canyon or Flashback)
4) Vibe/Uni vibe (Vibra Clone or Micro Vibe)
5) Tuner (Polytune)
Currently, this all there is on my board, and i might could live forever with just this.
And to add to the mix, in the spirit of the topic...I just got an Afterneath for those experimental times
Im just intermediate and this is my board (in order). I built it with advice from more exp musician friends of mine.
1. Xotic SP Compressor (almost got the Keeley one, i tried it out and loved it too)
2. JHS Clover Preamp (my Telecaster really comes alive with it and I can control the lows good)
3. Ibanez Tubescreamer TS9 (DUHH)
4. MXR phase 95 (for when I wanna go Budget Van Halen)
5. MXR carbon copy analog delay
6. Keeley Caverns Reverb + delay combo ( I love having a double delay. One in quarter and the other one in eights)
Next thing for me is definitely a Fuzz or a Wah I cant decide!!!
My list:
1. Wah (I modded mine)
2. Good OD as a boost or a standalone drive
3. Chorus
4. Phaser
5. Delay
I use the drive channel of my amp as well as my amp's reverb. Also I did not count the tuner pedal, as I assume we are talking about 'FX'.
This has quickly become one of my favorite channels on youtube!
D'Wan Ellington agreed.
That CabZeus pedal is an absolute gamechanger. Totally redefines how one can play in any environment.
1. Tuner
2. wah
2a. Phaser (gosh - how could I forget! And there is only one: MXR90 script handwired with no LED)
2b. Fuzz (I settled on a tone bender 3 clone that will also give me Muff tones. I run it VERY low gain)
3. boost (I use a TS with 0 gain)
4. chorus
5. tremolo
6. Delay
7. Leslie sim
8. looper (just for practicing)
Sorry it is more than 5.
No love for Phasers here? I like it as a subtle effect to add movement to the sound at times, preferably in stereo.
Incubus agrees
What does subtle mean? I don't even know how to spell it......

I love how he corrected himself about all guitar players loves pedals. I immediately thought of Angus Young. Just using his wireless for effects.
I've used multieffects since the 90s, a collection of pedals is foreign to me.

"The first pedal every guitarist should own is a great fuzz".....me sitting her with 4 currently on my board (5 if you count octave fuzz)
Seen your five guitars every guitarist should own as well as this 5 pedal vid. Can you do one on 5 amps or 5 types of amps every player should own?
Aside from compressors and boosts which you do need, the 5 most important pedals on my board, not in order are, wah wah, fuzz, overdrive, delay and reverb. Side note: if I can only have one overdrive, it’s definitely gonna be the Ibanez Tube Screamer. That pedal is so versatile it’s not even funny. I use that pedal for tones as dirty as Metallica and Slipknot, to tones as clean and beautiful as Dire Straits and Eric Johnson’s Cliffs of Dover.
I think one that's really really usefull ( maybe depends the genre they play ) is a noise gate as well
It's absolutely bananas that it's taken this long for guitarists to have viable DI options. I've run sound at my church for the last decade and can't remember the last time I even saw a bass amp, let alone had to mic one up.
Great video Rhett! Glad you picked some unique pedals instead of doing a 'tube screamer, reverb, tuner, etc' list lol
My top 5:
1. Tuner
2. Tubescreamer
3. High gain drive
4. Delay
5. Comp or Noise Gate
Even when using modelers this is how I set up most of my presets, except using amp models instead of drive. Also, it astounds me how some people spend $200 on their boutique drive pedal and then go on stage without a tuner...
My Choices -
1) PolyTune Tuner
2) JHS Bonsai Tubescreamer
3) Strymon Sunset
4) Chorus?
5) Strymon Iridium or MCAB +
6) TC Electonics Flashback 2
7) TC Electronics Hall of Fame 2
8) Boss RC-3 Looper
*** Chorus , Wah, and EQ I haven’t decided on yet.
I like a big ol pedalboard as much as anybody but all I really need is 90% of the time is:
an amp with good cleans and a tube like feel , a bit of dirt(from a pedal or another ch on the amp) and a short analog delay(better than verb in most live situations).
An overdrive, a delay, a reverb, a looper, maybe a modulation or a comp depending on what play
I'm a bass player and I have a Comp, Reverb, Delay, Tuner, OD/DI with cab sim. The Reverb and delay are optional but the other three aren't.
Love the video. Never seen some of the peddles used. So many out there.
