Bought HD 560 Ovation II once, never be disappointed. No One produce hedpones for vocal with 300 Ω and Life inside. The Old Cans its only for strong/smart ( also Amp Quest)

I still have the Ovation II and it still sounds good.

Nice review. Regarding the earpads, my pair is equipped with earpads identical to the ones on the non-gold version except for the color. The sound does change noticeably between both types of earpads. Moreover, I believe your Gold headphones are 300 ohms (due to their serial number, which is above 10k). The thing is, although I do agree that they both sound differently, not to a great extent. The impedance difference (300 vs 600 ohms) contributes to the sound difference the most. Anyway, a great review from which I learnt a lot, well done!

I came across your video while researching my HD540 Reference Gold 600ohm velour pad headphones. I purchased them in 1987 and they have had little use, so are in perfect condition.
I’m driving them via my similar vintage Audiolab 8000C preamp and they still sound pretty good to my ears almost 40 years on.

I'd say they're more than just 'pretty good' ;)

Its super interesting that the RG is still good with the original pads.
Also its a definite confirmation that the RG isnt merely a much prettier 540 but overrall an entirely different class

Never found the courage to try the “hot glue-mod” on a regular pair of HD540. Always wondered, how significant the added weight on the back of the HD540 GOLD’s driver was…

      Not likely worth the trouble.
Most mass-loading mods only offer incremental differences or placebo.
Also got glue is just too messy/ risky as a modding material. I would use blue-tack, as that's so much easier to clean up.

    Well, this is creepy.
I was literally searching for a new XLR cable for my Sennheiser HD540 gold.
    And bamm youtube knows.
