nicely summed up.
Awesome thanks. The burnt orange pads are classic. Last count I'm at 5 different models, but never had the chance to hear those 2200. As far as I know this model got a revamp colour change and became the HFI-2400. Kind of a pain to find speed swap pad replacements but a person can carefully cut out their own thin plastic tabbed rings ( trace the originals ) and bond new production pads to those new rings using a bit of sandpaper and then contact cement and voila ( hit up a plastic shop for thin styrene sheeting ) Did that with a pleather pad variant on these round cups. Will be grabbing a few more models down the road. Thanks very much for covering this one!!!
Great review! I really like your to the point approach, transparency and honesty. This combo is missing on many other channels. Insta sub. I like this unit for the simplicity and power.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback :)
A great review 😎👍🏼
Wow, now I feel old, thank you. I own a Ultrasone PRO 750 since 2008 I think. They seem to be very differently tuned from these you have, for the sub-bass in the 750s is simply stunning; even with the frustrating level of isolation they offer, it frequently shows me stuff I can't hear in my perfectly sealed IEMS. You are completely right in saying they were made to be listened to at low volumes. I guess this has to do with the fact that all old Ultrasones were aimed at professionals (for a while, they were popular for monitoring, and that's why I got mine), thus the stupidly long cables and the sturdy build - they will clearly last forever. I noticed the audiophile people seem to love or hate Ultrasone. I am a Taoist, so I love and hate them simultaneously all the time.
3:53 this is why i wish they would have just used a 3 way switch. That way you can manually select BT, AUX, or power. This automatic BT pairing is pretty horrible.
Agreed. For some people I can imagine this being a huge pain, especially if someone owns a smart watch - their phone bluetooth is probably on all the time... so there is no way to stop the amp connecting to your phone unless you unpair it every time, which would be ridiculous.
you fucker. I've been looking for these for years
All Ultrasone isnt good I guess except Signature Pro, Studio etc.
The Edition 8 was pretty neat too.
@@GREQReviews yes
Its so cool all the creativity they used to put in headphones, most headphones today have a very standard setup, but before we had this all figured out it really was the wild west.
Hi Those two components at the driver are diodes. Since they are parallel to the driver and opposing each other in polarity, they are most likely Zener diodes, which would be used as a sort of overvoltage protection, or volume limiter. Once the headphone input signal is higher than the Zener voltage of the reversed diode + 0.7V of the other diode, the impedance the amplifier has to drive will be much lower. The impedance will sink up to the point at which the amplifier begins to clip.
Finally! Someone knows what these things are. I've been wondering about this for ages. Are there also diodes on the Beyerdynamic? I knew they were used as something like volume/overload limiters, but not what the actual component was. Thanks for clearing that up.
@@GREQReviews Indeed The Beyerdynamic diver in your video also has diodes on it. What Headphone is it from? You can actually find the 80 Ohm version of the DT770 with a passive „99db limiter“ Altough, limiting the output of efficient, low to medium impedance headphones to only 99db, wouldn't require Zener diodes. The DT770s have 96db/mW, or 99db/2mW --> P= (U^2) / R --> U = √(P*R) --> U = √(0,002*80) = 0,4V at 99db output Therefore you would only need two „normal“ antiparalell diodes. With higher volume, let's say 111dB, you would, in case of the 80 Ohm DT770, already have 1,6V. At this point it would make sense to use oposing polarity zener diodes. I think it should be possible to test the reverse breakdown voltage with a good multimeter, and calculate an approximate volume level, at which the cricuit would be effective.
@@setech6788 I don't remember which model it's from, I've had it for many years. I also had a DT790 once which apparently had passive limiters in, but I don't recall seeing anything similar inside. Interesting sttuff.
The only meta tuned iem ive tried is the hisenior mega5est but i really enjoyed it, if I didn't have the fatfreq deuce coming in i would seriously consider this one as my next upgrade iem
Helllo there! Great review! A new suscriber here from Mexico. Ive just entered the audiophile world, my very initial gear is, Phillips SHP 9600 open back headphones and the Fiio Q3 DAC, I Know this set uo is pretty humble but Im pretty amazed with the sound Im getting. I need your advice here, Im considering this monitors , and use them also with my DAC, can you explain me how this would change my music listening experience? I know rhis monitors are not headphoness, whats would be the main difference? And my last question, Im an absolute newbie, between this monitors and the Hifiman Sundara headphones, whats do you think is the best way to go for me? Thanks in advance.
Oooof... that's a very big and difficult question to answer. I think out of the biggest differences you should notice at first are the improved sub-bass response, which is something most good modern IEMs are just better at than most open-back headphones. Secondly, I recall the 9600 being quite good, but the Orchestra Lite should have better micro-detail and separation of sound. Generally, IEMs are mostly used for their portability, or for comfort reasons, especially for glasses-wearing-folk. Between an IEM and a Sundara? For me personally, it's a no-brainer. I would get the Orchestra Lite - BUT that's because the Sundara doesn't fit my head properly and I find it extremely uncomfortable to wear, as the earcups also have no vertical swivel!!!
@ thanks a lot!
👌🏽😎
What is that music bro?😂
Kevin Macleod- "Farting Around" An absolute modern masterpiece.
So the soundstage of the Red isn't good, but would you say it's better than the soundstage of the Salnotes Zero?
@DurvalLacerda I'm afraid I can't say since I've never heard one.
Thanks for this always interesting to see what you zero in on in this huuuge iem market. Great coverage.
You can find modern iem with very "good" sinads nowadays for dirty cheap. Sadly I dont like them, its so unnatural to plug and hold anything deep in your ears canals. Ear buds or in ear its another story, but buds holds very poorly. But with some pads are almost okay. Leakage huge, but comfort on streets more important for me.
Part of the reason I like these is that I don't have to stick the IEMs deep into my ear canals, the tips just sit around the outside, closing the hole around my ear canal. The same goes for most over-ear type IEMs. If you're trying to put IEMs like these deep into your ears, you might be wearing them wrong and should probably try larger tips. The only ones that usually have to be worn deeper are many cable-down type, bullet-shaped IEMs.
The TPA3116 based amps are really only best paired with high efficiency/sensitivity speakers. Anyone have feedback how it sounds with speakers in the 93db and above sensitivity?
There is a part of me that really wants to pull the trigger on the KE4, and another part of me thats is screaming "naaaahhhh!" So for, thr "nah" is winning. I think this is one of those IEMs that just plays it too safe, and provides nothing remarkable. It has that same "master of none" feel like the Cadenza4, these strict JM1 super neutral tunes are being precieved as mundane and boring, and too middle of the road matter. And i think, ultimately, that hurts their appeal, in a sea of options where gimmicks and wow factor rule the roost.
In some ways I definitely agree with that assessment. But that's also why I like to keep my HD650 around. (another middle-of-the-road headphone) There are times I just get 'everything fatigue' and need a headphone that acts like a reset-button or a pallette cleanser, or something that just provides 0% chance of fatigue. But I also don't think that's for everyone, it's just something especially useful to me as a reviewer as it also helps keeps my opinions 'tempered' or unspoiled.
Same thing happened with me. I got to try them the linsoul booth (honestly I was there try the 7hz timeless which they didn't have) and I immediately knew I had found the right iem. I quickly went through my test tracks, and fell for them even more. I bought a pair for the 11-11 sale, so hopefully I'll have it in about a month.
Lately they caught my attention as most elegant bass heavy cans. Problem is that cable since my amp got only balanced outs and not many aftermarket brands make it. Had the same problem with my ADX5000, japans dont make it easy I guess
So do i hold the button for 5 sec on rca mode or bt mode, bc the book say the light will turn red. It never did. And now the amp can't connect back to my record player 😒
I think you are asking a question for the wrong product. This amp has a mechanical switch on the front for switching between Bluetooth and RCA mode. You don't need to hold down any buttons.
God bless reviewers that measure the nozzle.
Thanks for the video. The Spirit designated models were all cryogenically treated. The newish release pads are great and have an even better thicker inner ear fabric weave vs what you have with those saved original inserts.
Oh thanks, I didn't know about the cryogenic processing, that's interesting. I'm not sure if I'd like anything thicker there, I'd be worried about losing some detail.
@@GREQReviews Yeah it's strange the newer insides seem like a speaker fabric and I thought they would run the sound but somehow not. Well obviously you'd have to try them yourself to confirm ( it must change it somehow ) ***** MAYBE I am thinking about the AIRBOW ones for the cryo treatment. Losing track but one is...
Quite a good point on the dust covers. You can still get them included with the 202/207 and higher pads
I tried a few stax over the con I went to recently (I said I was going to leave a review but i forgot to sorry) along with a couple other estats like the entire hifiman range and I think I discovered that estats are not for me, they are amazing in terms of detail and technicalities but none of them had a tuning I could enjoy, they were all too base light and hot in the treble for my preference, they didn't excite me much beyond their technical capacity. Until they can put whatever type of black magic they used for the raal immanis in something that doesn't cost a car I'm still a planar person.
Did you try any older stax like SR pro or SR Signature? Like mentioned the new modern lambda series are tuned differently.
Kaldas RR1 vs Stax L Pro vs Perun?)
Perun > RR1 > Lambda Pro
Recently bought JVC d990 for 90$, very interesting ones. Ive had round leather sides+velour 4cm fat soft pads for perfect seal from r70x, PS: this pair dont like any close-side leather pads (and 2 other pairs on the way oval and angled). And only with 100% seal 2.5-3cm from ears they drivers works as they really should. Bass (from memory) sounds better than on beyerdynamic 1770 gen1 and better than r70x and hd600. So the seal is only problem, sadly pads so fat, that I cant use it with hat on streets (looks to weird) and hat will muffle/block sound a lot. Also d990 have no crazy detail like modern headphones, but enough. So They can be really called "reference" but for the original price in 1993. Now it would be 250$. So good mid-fi+ headphones. Thanks to Greq reviews for SINAD, only site where Ive found it and decided at least to give them a try.
I think D990 is like a baby DX1000. I have fake shure srh840 pads on mine. Also, they need the foam around the driver for the best bass texture. I would strongly advise against ever wearing any headphone over a hat. It's like eating with a sock over your tongue 🤪
@GREQReviews can't agree about "over hat". I had several situations where cotton cloth acted like a filter. Even with dt 990 on cotton beane could improve sound on street. (For example in winter days - you need some hat). Yes they are open one and, yes you will lose a lot of info, rumblele and vocals will stay with tunes.) cotton will remove some fr "peaks " and your will get softer sound, where you dont need details much.
@airun5362 literally like watching TV behind a frosted pane of glass.... like going to the Louvre but you sneak in at night and all the lights are off... like walking past a bakery in the morning with a gas mask... 🤪
@@GREQReviews I've checked your "hat" graphs with bass roll off and in my experience IRL its not dramatic at all. Like sound with only broad strokes. Its like "dolby effect on" xd. Anyway everyone can try for themselves easily.
@@GREQReviews btw in my region dx 1000 cost 1k$. Which is insane. Rarely but for 450-500 you can buy here Focal Clear. Or Ive read some guy bought onkyo a800 for 40$, damn, that should be insane value, even for 200+..
Great video! I love seeing in depth video about old stax headphones. Now i understand why my 404 lambda's have dustcovers on them and my Lambda SR Signature don't. I agree that the old Stax lambdas like the Signature offer big soundstage and its one of the main reasons i fell i love with the stax brand. It is incredible how such old headphones can sometimes even offer more detail in comparison to nowadays mid - high end headphones. Best thing i've ever heard was the X9000 on the Blue Hawaii amp on a Mytek Manhattan II DAC. To me it sounds simulair to the Lambda Signature tuning but even more expansive and detailed. It has incredible depth perception in the sound stage and imaging is spot on. The Lambda Signature to me is like a mini X9000 and i would love to hear those headphones again.
If money was no object, I'd have an X9000 and a blue hawaii. If I count correctly, I think I've heard 4 Lambda Signatures to date, and none of them sounded the same. Two were more like Lambda Pros, with quite aggressive treble. One was more like the SR-Lambda Spirit, and one was almost like my Normal Bias SR-Lambda frankenstein thingy, with very smooth, rich presentation... that one clearly sounded the best to me by a big margin. It had all the clarity, but also the musicality.

I think you got it! I've got 2 of those, and 1 of them was faulty, so I replaced the drivers. The other one is fine so I only replaced the cable so I could actually use it. It's the rare dark turquoise colour variant ^_^
Could you share your EQ settings for making these sound better? I'm curious about the bass boost/treble reduction you did
I don't think there's a good reason to do that. Everyone hears differently, so what sounds good for me won't sound good to thousands of other people. I would recommend watching the video "The TRUTH about SOUND QUALITY in headphones" on "The Headphone Show" TH-cam channel - it explains this 'problem' very well.
@@GREQReviews I'm just new to IEM's and EQing
@@Lafret17 If I'm using it with my phone, I would knock 8KHz down by around 3-4dB, and 4KHz by around 2.5dB. That's what sounded good to me. Depending on the music, or background noise, I'd also give 63hz a 2-3dB boost.
@@GREQReviews I followed your EQ advice and they sound fucking FIRE. thank you bro
The left one has gone quite than the right one is thier any fix
I would get in contact with Simgot.
I run my TH900mk2 via the ADI-2 and EQ the mids up a touch and treble down. Adds width and brings the vocals forward. I love them. These are the best cans to rock out, no questions. V tuning is a dirty word to most reviewers whose slavish devotion to neutral tuning I find tedious. Also if you older, you don't hear the high treble anyway so no big deal for me. I love em.
Very good review. Thank you. You must be A TOP REVIWER. I whish you to get 1M+ subscribers. Good luck
Mine arrived last week, but you need to turn the volume past 3/4 when using Bluetooth to get decent volume from my kef q150. Possibly a faulty unit?
That does sound weird. Have you tried pairing it with a different bluetooth source? (I guess you already tried to max-out the volume on the current source?)
I have a pair of these that my late father in law owned. Sadly, the side pads are somewhat flat. I'd love to restore the pads. Anyone any ideas how to 'reinflate' or replace the foam in the side pads?
I would start by trying to take the side pads off. Hopefully they are only stuck on with double-sided tape, or some now old and brittle glue. If you can get the pads off successfully, I would cut slits in the BACKS of of the pads, take out all the old foam, and stuff in some new pieces of foam. Then when you stick them back on, you can seal them and stick them on, with just one piece of extra-strong double-sided tape.

not gonna lie , the same though here :D
I got a Sennheiser HD560S and a Creative 2.1. Its OK to pair with the SK01?! And its better for de 2.1 to connect in Line Out or in the headphone 3'5 output. Love to equalize the Bass for films without SW. Just mechanicaly with this tool. Thanks! Apreciated
Line-out all the way!
Hi. Great video! Do you think it would be a good option for improving Nintendo Switch audio in dock mode? Thanks!
I don't own a Switch, so I can't say with certainty, but I assume you would send HDMI signal to the TV from the dock, and coaxial back to the amp? If so, that sounds like it should be fine, since it's pure digital until it reaches the DAC. Assuming that works, that's better than plugging headphones into the TV, or using the TV speakers.
@@GREQReviews I don't remember if my monitor have a coax out, but I was thinking about using the DAC with a usb port in the dock
Some people have had success connecting a variety of DACs to their switches in this way, but I have no way to guarantee this one will work.
How is it compared to hd560s? Im torn between alot of choices, cal 1h is heavily discounted here and it is brand new too, but then i heard about the off the shelf driver
It's been too long since I've heard the HD560S, so I don't feel comfortable giving a strong opinion about that. But since the entire HD500 range is quite similar and i'm quite strongly familiar with it, I can safely say they're quite different. The HD500 range to me sounds more intimate and in-your-head, but also more technically accurate and truthful to the recording. The Cal.1H is more laid back, with a wider stage and stronger, deeper bass response. It's overall a smoother listen, and digs deep and loud enough to enjoy most electronic music - something I've felt lacking in most of the past HD500 range. The off-the-shelf driver is clearly not as detailed as any modern flagship tier dynamic, but neither have I ever felt wanting for more detail. Often, more detail can also be more fatiguing, so I appreciate the Cal.1H for being smooth and relaxing in all regards, which the HD500 range doesn't always excel at.
I have HD 560s and thinking to get the jt1 from AliExpress. maybe I have a faulty HD 560s it is the worst headphone among what I have. it is weird it is so boring and have airy filter that cover anything specially while gaming. I have SUPERLUX hd681 with oratory eq it is awesome for the price and have much better separation and u can define right channel and left easily in games not like the crap Sennheiser HD 560s. even astro a40 is superior to the HD 560s. so does the jt1 have the same thing I described about the HD 560s? my main usage is gaming. thx for the review.
I have never tried the two side by side, and it has been a long time since I tried the 560, so I can't give any advice here.
Did you used two foams or one foam. ? I loved using two foams in Silver Nozzle. It was warm, smooth, i loved it.
Just the one.
@@GREQReviews actually the tips i used added a lot brightness. Changed the tips to S&s and Velvet. And only 1 foam, it's the best under 100$ for me.

wow besides cable they look perfect 👍
I was surprised to see several modern closed back gaming headphones scored above hd600 in rtings site (in flat sinad). for example SteelSeries Arctis Pro, wich used new can be found at 50$. Sadly all main wireless headphone models designed with maximum generic look.
Cool unit-but no headphone jack !
That would have increased the price by at least 50 EUR :P
what was this worth back in the 90s? very interesting review!
About 260 EUR in today's money. ¥38,000 in 1996.
I don't have anyone to tell this irl but today I'm going to the biggest audio show in my country and I'm going to try as many cool headphones as possible, maybe I'll leave a short show impressions after I get back
That's the best way to really get into the hobby, enjoy!
I have tried MoonDrop Blessing 3 and Kato offline. I prefer the bass of Kato,Blessing 3 bass Too much gives me a headache and discomfort but Blessing 3 in other aspects. Due to price and takes 10-12 hours to wearconsiderations, I prefer SIMGOT EA1000, If it were non-metal, it would be perfect for me What I want to ask is, among the many headphones you have heard, are there any that have a cavity made entirely of 3D printed resin, but the tuning and price are the same as those of the SIMGOT EA1000?
I guess when you say "3D printed resin headphone" you mean IEM?? In any case, no I havn't heard any resin IEM that sounds exactly the same as the EA1000. The Simgot EM6L gets quite close in the bass and lower mids, but deviates a bit in the upper mids and treble, and in the end sounds quite different in it's timbre and presentation.
kiwi quartet in down up is very similar to the ea500/lm. very comfortable as well, but I wouldn't pay full price (well actually I did when they came out lol).
