    Thank you all SO so much for the feedback on the empty house tour & the fireplace situation … as you’ll see in the video, we took your advice and asked the original owners for photos of the original stone that’s been covered up! 😍😍😍

    ah Mel I don't mean this in any kind of patronising way but you're SO good at this, your videos never feel forced at all and I could honestly listen to you talk about anything. I was even glued to your skincare one and that topic really isn't my bag anymore. I can imagine you have a super sucessful skincare line or something. I always find your videos honest and uplifting because of your attitude to life and even when you're going through hard times, the way you share about them is so valuable. I'm so excited to see everything house related, would love to see ones with you and your sister in law discussing the designs for the house, and super interested in the rebuild of the utility and your dad's pad - we bought our first home in December and it's going on 90 years old and there's a fair bit needs doing, knowing where to start and who to get in first is a bit overwhelming! But follow your nose on what you want to share and make, I'll be clicking regardless xx

    My parents bought a really old almost derelict house when I was a baby because they couldn't afford anything else and it took them 20 years to start caring about having matching appliances because everything else took priority. But now, after 22 years, my mum is starting to redo the rooms 1 by 1 again because things need updating. A home is never really finished but I think that's fun! Good luck with your house x

    As an American living in Ireland I have noticed that Ireland has mastered the catastrophe of the 'working poor'. Irish people are working full time positions and aren't able to save money to buy a house because rent is too high as well as the cost of living. It's honestly so heartbreaking.

    • @lynncrf
      @lynncrf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Sadly it's become a global phenomenon in recent years. Much of Europe, the US, Canada, and Oz is simply impossible to buy in.

    • @lauren8627
      @lauren8627 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@lynncrf Absolutely. I was hearing stories before Covid19 that in Hobart (Tasmania) the new homeless are people with jobs, either under employed or full time employed, living in tents. So many people from mainland Australia bought up the houses on the island and they get more money being used sporadically as Air BnB's than as houses for actual residents. No one needs more than 2 houses, I find it very unethical. I don't need more than 1!!

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The rents are absolutely criminal! You are expected to pay more in rent for a property than you would be paying in monthly mortgage repayments! Landlords are making enough to pay their mortgage back (from those renting) AND sometimes the amount leftover constitutes a second wage! It means a lot of us end up juggling multiple jobs for many many years … for some, it means sacrificing the prospect of starting a family which devastates me (house vs child! ). One can NOT afford massive rents forever, at least when you buy, you have security in retirement, and for many it means emigration. It can mean living in the family’s spare room forever. It’s so, so sad. Like what about people who don’t want to marry, or who haven’t met anyone they want to buy a house with? Because they spent years and years spending every waking hour working/sleeping in order to make rent? 😫

    • @mabrigen
      @mabrigen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      it is not just Ireland.... and tbh Melanie is very lucky to afford a house like this one at her age

    • @lynncrf
      @lynncrf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@melaniemurphyofficial It really is so sad. The older I get the more I understand that so much of life is luck. We were extremely lucky to have acquired a house in 2013 at the literal bottom of the market, but it was luck only.
      Young people nowadays are in such a terrible situation. ☹️ It's even worse for single young people - they have no chance at all. Yet up until circa 2000s single people could buy houses in Dublin. It sucks for everyone.

    Home buying is wild right now. We started the process this year in the southwest part of the US, and our agent told us we need to have 5-10k cash over asking price in order to be competitive. That's 5-10k in addition to the down-payment (around 7k) and closing costs (around 5k) . I think we're going to have rent another year 🙁 even with good jobs and good credit there just aren't enough houses to go around and the prices have gotten so high. Congratulations on your new home, Mel! I can't wait until that's in our cards, but I'm willing to be patient 😊
    *edited to add. I know these numbers may seem totally low compared to Ireland im not sure what the standard price is there. I know everyone has different experiences. But for the typical market here, it's wildly expensive.

I live in southern Illinois (USA) in a small community but the new house is farther out on a acre, with great views and it’s our own! While it’s scary the amount of work it is going to require but it’s also so exciting!

    My partner and I ended up compromising on our current home and could not be more in love with it! It's a semi-detached house which I was a bit skeptical of at first (we are Canadian and detached houses have been established as "the norm" for a long time). Our place has great soundproofing though and our connected neighbour is a sweet older woman (who I'm sure is thrilled we are introverted cat people since the last owners had 2 loud dogs, haha). My mam and her partner just bought the house we live in a little over a year ago now, and it's about 50/60 years old. They were looking at new builds during covid but that fell through due to them only affording it with the help to buy scheme on new builds, but the restrictions meant the houses wouldn't be built and ready to move into in time to use that scheme. This is a lovely house that they've bought don't get me wrong, but they've already spent a fortune on it! I personally think they'd paid a bit too much for it to start, but that comes down to location as where I live there's the main village/small town (where we live) plus surrounding villages where there isn't as much there and therefore house prices are lower. So far they've had a rewire, all the central heating updated, a new bathroom, walls plastered and decorated and new carpets in the majory of the house. And it's not finished, they plan to get the kitchen done, redecorate the bedrooms and also knock down the utility room extension and rebuild it. Similar situation to you, it's poorly built, there isn't any mould but it's single brickwork and not really possible to keep as is as they're wanting it to become all one big kitchen. Seeing all this and the money going into it is making me lean towards getting a newer build when the time comes for me to look for my own home (the way the economy is, if the time comes!😅🤞🏻)

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s so so good that you are having this experience to help you make the decision ahead of time! 👏🏻❤️ It really can cost a fortune depending on what needs doing … thankfully we can do ours up over time, the only urgent things = part of the roof & extension rebuild! The extension is the only badly built part of the whole house we are SO lucky - the rest of it is so solid! But like your family we need to do all that stuff over time like plastering/floors/new kitchen etc etc and it’s going to add up over the years! Because we are no longer saving for a house, now we can spend that spare income on renovations! If our monthly budget was tighter I absolutely would have opted for a new build for the energy efficiency alone 😍 It’s just so important to be aware of these hidden costs. People often buy and soon later SELL older houses as they weren’t anticipating the costs, and can’t afford them! xxx

    • @FranThe1
      @FranThe1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@melaniemurphyofficial likewise with my mam and her partner, the house already looks like a completely different house, and it's looking lovely but it's going to be a few years down the line before it's completely finished! I'm also put off from renting where possible as they've gotten their mortgage later on in life and therefore their monthly repayments are a lot higher than if a younger person were to be repaying a mortgage. Good luck in your new home and I hope the work process is as smooth as possible, I'm so excited for you and Thomas finally owning your own home! ❤️Xxx

    Thank you for touching on available and affordable housing. Where I live, a 2-bedroom condo can cost you $500,000. A 4-bedroom house will cost you about $1 million. It's insane. I'm not yet at the age where I would consider buying a house. I would love to but rents are so high it's hard to imagine being able to save enough money for a deposit. Sure, one doesn't need to own a house, but what's the alternative? Ever-rising rent prices, shady landlords, investors that buy properties and then kick current residents to the curb so they can flip the apartments and charge more for them...

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This 😫 Some people think I’m mad to have spent so many years ‘obsessing’ over owning, but that obsession got me here! And I am so RELIEVED! Because when I am in my mid fifties I won’t have to come up with a ton of money each month for rent OR for a mortgage as the mortgage will be paid off. If I live until I’m 90 like a lot of the women in my family, that’s an enormous chunk off stress that I’ve relieved my future self of. I encourage you to work towards owning slowly but surely … with increasing life expectancy I genuinely believe you are better off buying late than never! My monthly mortgage repayment now is absolutely less than what I’d pay renting for a similar size house and I’ve so much more freedom now - I can knock walls, can get a dog, and no landlord can come kick me out! There are definitely pros to renting especially when young when you might not necessarily want to be tied down … but long term I think buying is an excellent choice xxx

    I love these videos but it also makes me sad because I’d love to return to Ireland, even with a deposit returning expats are treated very poorly within first 12 months & treated as investors so higher deposit etc (30-50%). It’d also be many years before buying as evidencing income due to self employment is also a thing (min 3 years). I’d have to be self employed due to lack of employment in the hse so considering buying in the UK & staying in the NHS. Would a vision board work for this one? Ireland will always be home.💚

    Yeah it's crazy that people working hard on decent salaries can't afford to live in the area they feel at home in and people say 'get off your high horse and move down the country'. Like, I'm working and adding to the economy 😂 why is it a crazy idea to want to live close to family in a good area in Dublin haha

      If your house already had a ton of work done to it before you moved in, it probably is comparable with modern homes! ☺️ Very possible! To me, a newer home is much more energy efficient / wouldn’t have plumbing & electrics in desperate need of updating … that kinda thing! Anything built in recent years I’d totally entertain but so many shite ‘new’ homes were built during the Celtic tiger times, so many just thrown together. They build houses very differently in recent years/different materials etc are used now than fifty years back! Those houses would be literal antique lol! In real estate speak, anything over 100 years old is antique and sometimes anything 30 years or more is ‘old’ or ‘older’, each time period brought different homes onto the market! If I bought a 50 year old car I’d definitely think of it as old … perception may depend on the area too! On our row there are really old houses as well as brand new ones and it’s very obvious when you look at them, at how ‘established’ the gardens are etc! xxx

    I don't know if a 4 bedroom house with garden and room for grandad flat is really 'basic'... People on their 20s have never been able to afford that type of house before.
    I grew up in rural England in the 90s and only very rich people had 4 bedroom houses.
    Imagine a 4 bed near London!

    • @melaniemurphyofficial
      @melaniemurphyofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I wasn’t describing this house as basic … ? I was referring to the fact that homes with 3 or 4 bedrooms are costing up to 600k, 700k, 800k in parts of Ireland, and even financially successful people can’t afford them x

      @@melaniemurphyofficial Well you said 'if pretty successful people are unable to buy a pretty basic 3/4 bedroomed house', while talking about yourself. And you said in your other video that 4 beds was a must for you for your first ever house.
      I'm just saying no one your age has historically ever been in the position to buy a 4-bed house 🤷‍♀️

My fiancé is super super good at making and fixing and electricity and everything, and I am handy as well (though lees) working together is such a delight! Just living a couple of years in Ireland and still find the obsessions of Irish very strange to own their own house. Sure, the renting laws are rubbish, but coming from the continent it is so unusual to think about ever owning a house unless you have a very stable living situation is certainly not on the table (unless you inherited it). Probably a good reason not to plan to life here for the the long-term.

    • @melaniemurphyofficial

      Everyone deserves to have the option of owning a home! It’s a very hot topic for good reason. Of course owning isn’t suited to everyone, but everyone should absolutely have the option. Bad governance is why we’re in the situation we’re in now, in Ireland!

    • @Laura-qy7rc
      @Laura-qy7rc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's also to do with renters rights. I don't understand things fully. But landlords in Ireland can kick you out of rented accommodation with like a month's notice. And you're not going to want to invest in doing b
      the place up if your not confident you'll be able to stay in that accomodation for a long time. Obviously, if you had kids it would be added stress worrying about possibly being told to leave. Also rent is generally a lot more expensive than a mortgage

    • @lynncrf
      @lynncrf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well personally I don't understand why anyone would willingly set themselves up as a renter for life. I can't imagine the stress of trying to make rent when you are on a pension or knowing that the landlord could kick your 80 year old self out onto the street.
