I had the realization that I kind of found a lot of the conversations with a lot of my teenage friends boring and unenjoyable because we were just regurgitating trending jokes at each other over and over. I didn’t feel any substance or individuality because our jokes and humor weren’t stemming from original experiences in our real lives. I just deleted TikTok and I was completely out of the loop of jokes in like 2 weeks. But the conversations I’m having now are more interesting now because we’re forced to talk abt actual stuff happening in our lives because I wouldn’t relate to any videos they’d show me or conversations abt the latest trend or drama. I’m also having a healthier sense of self as I actually experience things and form my own opinions without any input from anyone else.
@@cashmuniI was once called an "npc" by a guy who didn't know what an npc is outside of the Andrew Tate brainrot meaning. Ended up acting like a Skyrim npc and he was extremely confused.
This is something a lot more young people need to realize! Learning to live in the moment and knowing what makes YOU happy keeps life refreshing. There are people in their 40s year who lived the same daily routine for 20+ years and struggle to question why they're so miserable as their lives stagnate horribly
There's a lot wrong with society today and how the world we live in is set up. But modern culture just being 'boring' isn't worth making a whole video on Especially when the guy making the video looks like the most boring person on Earth
i feel like trends could be really cool if they wernt forgotten so quickly. we should be picking up these new aesthetics and adding them to our closet, literally. just because its not trending and new we shouldnt make a certain style redundant. one day i might wake up and feel like dressing in a tight fitted suit, the next day maybe i wanna wear a comfy hoodie and joggers. this can apply to other things than just clothes ofc.
ik everyone blames TikTok and whatever but it literally is tiktok like remember when we had to go on Pinterest to see what aesthetic was trending and then that was our lives for the summer but now it’s random stuff that lasts a week then is forgotten 😭
Yea it’s funny when you look at previous decades trends would last a year to the decade, songs, dances and fashion can define a decade 60’s hippies, 70’s disco, 80’s hair metal and bright clothing, 90’s counter culture alternative rock n rap either with baggy clothes or skinny with ripped jeans, 2000’s is emo and then there’s us a new dance trend every month or so where a song gets overplayed or redundant after a couple weeks and are swept by the mainstream while we look for new ones
I find it so strange how people follow trends. I've always dressed differently from the rest and was bullied so badly for dressing what was true to me. Now it's considered weirdcore, goth, y2k and alien girl trends all the young folk think I'm going for when really i am an alien but I'm really just dressing like myself
It gets really weird when you are and always have been part of a subculture that has become "trendy" lately. I can only speak from my experience as a metalhead but the past few years I've noticed that it's more about the "aesthetic" than the actual subculture now. People listen to the "mainstream metal playlists" (this isn't a discussion about underground or not. I do like some mainstream stuff tho), like a few songs, buy a shirt and think everyone in Metal tees and leather jackets likes the same music. Ironically they get wildly offended when you simply tell them those bands are not your cup of tea. I think part of it is the increased pressure by social media to be hyper individualistic and people are so desperate to be "different" that they feel attacked when someone they see as different denies similarities that aren't purely aesthetical.
@@andrxfxbI think it's ok to enjoy subcultures you're not fully knowledgeable about, everyone starts somewhere. But people like those conservative goths are just an oxymoron doing the goth look because it's in. I personally am not much into the music of the alternative subcultures, I know it and can enjoy it sometimes, but I participate in the subcultures through my activism and the work I do in the peer social support fields. It's not all about having to listen to listen to every band but I think you really do need to believe in the political background of the subcultures. Oh and I'll add I've been an alternative kid since I was a lil middle schooler back in 2002. I'm not new to the scene.
Tbh most of our culture has just gotten brain rotting in a way due to the vast amount of just nothing burger trends that matter one second but immediately die the next
This is probably one of the most important videos of 2024 - your whole analysis on how algorithms influence the content that ends up being created is spot on.
From my perspective people low key don’t really like anything. The internet tells them what’s cool. Yellow is the new black and people will most likely follow. Like the Barbie movie made a billion dollars yet no one talks or cares about it anymore. The current culture generation reminds me of the movie Josie and the Pussycats
It’s been over a year. This year was Wolverine vs Deadpool. There’s always a movie that does well. Doesn’t always mean it will leave a lasting impression.
I wanted to say something about that too because it’s been a sincerely exciting year for music but I had not watched the video yet and realized it was probably about the modern consumption of music and the culture around it, not necessarily the music itself.
Haha yeah i should totally clarify I LOVE both chromakopia and brat i think theyre probably my most streamed albums this year alongside chappel roan’s and Vince staple’s latest works !! I put them in the thumbnail really just to draw eyes and because i did use the brat aesthetic in the video Brat needs album of the year at the Grammys btw ill be rioting if it doesn’t happen
It creates a hive mind. Everyone thinks and speaks and dresses the exact same. Nobody can speak outside the norm; you're just in an echo chamber these days.
@@maemadl54Yeah I'll think maybe I'm a whole human finally and then I see a "starter pack" meme or something else that describes my life and viewpoints with intimate and belittling detail and I feel like a number again
@@kp8923yes. i somehow feel even more alienated- there are now more people who are ostensibly “like me” but they really aren’t. but they’re taking my place, occupying my niche, so i am not useful. whereas yes, even 5 years ago, it could be lonely to be different, but it made Me all the more appreciated by others for the ways i was different. now i am afraid to like/do certain things because i don’t want to be lumped in to the conglomerate of these people who also like/do those things- it’s not a problem of not wanting to be like “the other girls” (because it’s not only an issue among girls) but it’s like. i know so many other people are receiving this information through such a digestible, diluted, packaged way that i don’t want anyone to have the impression that that’s how i perceive things. it’s like a costume. this sounds stupid to write out because it’s only clothes or music or hair or hobbies or whatever and maybe its vain and self centered but i think it’s necessary, at least for some people, to feel unique. i feel like an edgy teenager for acknowledging it but it has been something weighing on me these past few years and i can’t deny or suppress it anymore as much as i’d like to. i just watched a video called how the internet has changed how we view weirdness or something like that by hannah marie (i think) that sort of talks about this. there used to be things that you could identify others who are like you with but now everything is accessible to everyone, nothing truly sets us apart anymore for the most part. i hope this comment is legible it is 2 am and i struggling with the small text box of the youtube app lol
You seriously believe that? You think you look at anything that's not filtered and made okay for your puny pathetic little brain? You're a servant to your phone
A lot of us are just surviving-whether it’s because we aren’t financially stable, have family responsibilities, or face other challenges-and this directly feeds into trends. Large corporations see that people consume content in their spare time and assume that means it’s meaningful. But in reality, much of the content feels the same, even when it’s superficially different. We’re constantly rushing without taking a moment to truly analyze or appreciate things-whether it’s art, music, videos, or anything else. Everything moves too fast. It's like standing at a train station and watching a train speed by. That train represents modern society and culture, where originality and personal growth are overshadowed by individuals, companies, and algorithms chasing the next trend. They claim to be innovators, but they’re just false pioneers chasing fleeting relevance. As you mentioned in the video, people often prefer something familiar over something new. Why? Because they don’t have the time-or energy-to experiment or explore. Their circumstances, like money or family obligations, leave little room for risk. As a result, nothing fundamentally changes. Instead, everything just gets faster and more repetitive with each passing year. To truly feel alive, we need time-time to let things sink in and leave a mark. I can’t recall the last three videos I watched, but I can vividly remember books I read years ago or movies that moved me. Those experiences stayed with me because they had the time to resonate. Feeling alive and allowing something to impact you deeply takes time, yet the world has become a slave to speed, failing to realize that this relentless pace is destroying everything meaningful. In my eyes, this very speed is what makes us slaves-shackled by worsening living conditions. Individuals have no time to assimilate or elaborate; they can only consume. 19:50 - Feel the same, tbh. I hardly have a clue what is going on, or what is right or wrong in this case.
Hard agree So many people think that working is the only actually meaningful thing you can do in your life. (Maybe they’ll say family is also important, but if you’d dare take more time off to spend more time with them, they’ll just call you lazy) Also, sidenote, the work we do is usually working for some millionaire to have even more money while being compensated really poorly. But, I really think that one of the most important detail here is our lack of actual social lives. It’s all interconnected with our lack of time and hyper consumerism, but gosh does it stun our ability to do anything tangible as a group. Physical communities are rare, and our lack of exposure to different people makes people way more close minded (as a trans person, I can tell you that people just actually having time to socialize would make fearmongering against outgroups so much harder, and conservatives would have to change strategy.) Anywayyyy, that was quite the tangent, lol
@@Rafaelforte-hs4bvI agree that the lack of third spaces is severely impacting people's ability to understand and empathize with one another. This might partly be due to the pandemic. As someone who is 19 but still feels like I’m 15, I can say the 1-2 years of isolation during COVID stunted emotional growth for many, especially kids and teens. The consequences are apparent in online spaces like Twitter or, to a lesser extent, TikTok. People often don’t research or critically analyze what they consume, leading to widespread acceptance of flawed arguments-whether it’s xenophobes, flat-earthers, or the “anti-woke” crowd. For example, the outrage over LGBTQ+ representation is absurd. If someone dislikes a show because it features diverse characters, the logical choice would be to simply not watch it. Instead, they flood online spaces with complaints like toddlers rejecting vegetables. Ironically, just as eating vegetables helps you grow physically, embracing diversity helps you grow emotionally and intellectually. The constant recycling of the same tired stories in media highlights this lack of growth. I can’t even remember the last romance or action movie I watched that felt original. You also mentioned being trans, and I think the hate directed toward trans people boils down to ignorance. Here in Italy, we have a saying: "Vivi e lascia vivere"-live and let live. Being trans is awesome! No one signs a contract at birth agreeing to a particular gender. If you don’t like your house, you move. If your phone isn’t working for you, you upgrade. So why does it matter if someone wants to make a change to feel more like themselves? At its core, this all comes down to literacy-media literacy, critical thinking, and basic empathy. These are fundamental skills that many seem to lack nowadays. Thanks for reading this far, kind stranger on the internet. I hope you have a wonderful day!
I think part of this is the issue of “breadth” of culture but not “depth” of culture. The Internet makes it so easy to get into a certain type of music or clothing because you can look up any song or genre, or order any kind of clothing online. Whereas before the Internet you had to put more work into physically going out to search for things, and meet people who knew more about a given subculture than you and could show you the ropes. Plus everything moves and changes so quickly that it can feel like you never have enough time to really “get into” something before the world moves on. I mean of course it’s not like that for everyone but it seems quite a few people feel that way.
Amazing vid! I’m actually currently working on an essay for my class reflecting on what our modern architecture is saying about our beliefs and values! I feel it’s a bit related as current architecture is so god awful ugly lol, but I believe it’s just a reflection of our society’s value for cheapness and convenience. I only mention this as architecture is an art too and it definitely speaks to our culture. I’ve been also exploring what it is doing to our mental health and well being, and tbh I feel like our architecture is adding to the idea u mentioned about nothing feeling special anymore. It feels like our exterior spaces are no longer special and could speak to why we heavily prefer to be online.
I love this topic! I have seen a really interesting art exhibition last year by a portugese artist who used modern building materials and suspended and arranged them in classical compositions... somehow it was a great way to show just how cheap and flimsy they are. I wish there was a way I could read your essay, but we are in a youtube comment section so... oh well. But if you could share some of your sources you'd make a stranger really happy 🙂
This is an excellent video essay with some really insightful takes. I'd say it's underrated but honestly, when you're viral you're not in good company, so I'm just happy and grateful to have seen it. Wish you the best.
Everyone is acting all of the time, nobody wants to be themselves anymore and I'm sick of it. I haven't had a genuine, emotional conversation with anyone since I was a little kid. Everything anyone ever says is made up of either widely accepted general opinions or their true feelings but hidden in layers upon layers of sarcasm and inverted in a way that leads you to the opposite of what they truly want to tell you. Everyone wants to be perfect and without mistake in their own way but they just end up being filtered, soulless and without any real personality. Tell me what you truly want and I'll tell you my goals too: I want to create and encourage others to create art, to make people realise their true potential by not being afraid to experiment and listen to both positive and negative feedback. I want to be like that too. Show others how you see the world in fun and creative ways, celebrate beauty but also enjoy the aesthetics of ugly. Exaggerate everything so much that it sticks out, even in this world where everything is already oversaturated and designed to draw your attention.
I feel like your perception is kind of skewed. Its not like mass media and subcultures gaining and losing popularity very quickly is new. I feel like back in the day it was more demographic, and racial, and luckily those things have changed. But beyond that, trends have always been fast paced since the advent of print, radio and tv. Not only that, but music and subcultures today dont really move that much faster. Skittery hi hat trap beats have been a trend for at least 15 years, with a few micro evolutions. Indie music generally sounds like what it did 15 years ago. Soundcloud rap has only slowly evolved from the classic cloud rap sound to the more "rage" style kids listen to now. Consider that punk music, rap, metal, rnb, and electronic music all came bursting out of 30 year period or so since the 1960s. If anything, i feel like cultural change has slowed down, and all we get instead is the facade of change.
I agree. Im bored if out modern culture because it hasn’t evolved enough. The 2020s dont have a unique quality that differentiates it. Each and every year in the 2010s could be differentiated from one and other. 2012 was all snapback obey hats, cheif keef/ 2chains type rap, and mountain dew. 2016 was a new wave, new sound, designer clothes. 2018 was the evolution of 2016. 2019 was the culmination. And now every year since 2020 is legit just 2019 part 2. 2021 was 2019 part 3, 2022 was 2019 part 4, 2023 was 2019 part 5. 2024 is 2019 part 6. Its just too much of the same. I really wish something new would happen.
@@hahathatisfunnybrolockdown killed culture progression, usually the culture or style never ends when the decade ends, the 90’s is more like 92-2001, the 80’s is more like 84-92, so our 2010’s was like 2014 or 15-19 when everyone was leaving the jerk and dougie era of music and dressing to more of the Soundcloud rap and hype beast clothing until lockdown stagnated that natural progression where either style hasn’t changed or changed too much where there is no longer one that dictates our generation
Haven't watched yet but I just gotta say, brat summer was so much fun offline. Like off social media and all, actually in the club, brat summer was not at all boring.
I'm goth and everytime I go in public, I'm the only person who looks like me. On one hand it's great, but I also feel like people would express themselves more differently if they cared less what others think and weren't chronically online.
I like to think that were assaulted by algorithms and nonstop stuff 24/7 now if you’re not willing to unplug. Because of that, people just get lost in the sauce and will just chase the trends and what ever is happing constantly rather than chill and live their lives in a more meaningful way. Which leads to being desensitized and numb to everything. You’ll find that if you unplug for a while that everyone is stuck in some kind of echo chamber and if you don’t go with the flow, you get the wrath or left behind. So it’s kind of turned into an endless loop of get with the program, or embark aim your own journey And go have a meaningful life to create your own culture.
I feel like art doesn't dictate the culture or trends but rather, the culture dictates the art and trends and how fast they come and go. Favorite Carti clone is Ken Carson
In other words I disagree with the sentiment that "art is culture." When I think of culture, I think of family structure, ideology, religion, language, annual traditions, and lifestyle choices. In every society and culture, the art we see is just a reflection of all the aforementioned things. Great video.
It is a great analysis and a great video. loved it from the start. imagine how bad this is if we are analyzing how a culture that changes in every century and decade is boring when, in fact, culture is always culture and is by itself captivating and indulging from its roots. it kinda gets crazy. love the video format. i think im here to stay and wait for various different videos.
I am not wearing something necessarily because it's trendy. My problem is I can't have a completely rounded style because I am both into rock and alt and cute flowery things 😅 I usually wear things that are not on the opposite ends of the spectrum but they can be - for a wedding or rock concert. I have skinny, mom and 70s jeans because I like them all 😅 And I am really nostalgic for the times when I wasn't even born and hope we somehow form at least a couple of big subcultures that don't rely on fashion only
Not to discredit any of the themes of this video. But.. there is a lot of really thriving music and art scenes that are very distinct. Right now San Francisco is having a twee moment and has been for like 5 years now. La has the craziest noise/electronic/sludge. But you can’t expect to TikTok to deliver them to you. You just have to be into this stuff a lot more than just from a fashion perspective. And you have to dig for this stuff and actually be friends with people making it too lol
@@eatatjoes6751 Really? Most of what I see is people being annoyed by the overkill marketing, ofc maybe it's just the spaces im apart of though. The general public is prob different
I agree, it sucks But to be fair, it’s still authentic, but much less "communitic??" Idk. Like, as a trans person, I can 100% tell you that trans communities are very much communities. The inside jokes, the political beliefs and concepts, there’s even the counter-culture fashion with our lovely femboys! However, it’s online. While there absolutely are gender non-conforming slayers out there, there isn’t actually the necessary physical social network to bring them together.
this video communicated exactly how i feel about life at the moment. two months ago i set a restriction on instagram and the purposeful selection of the content i consume now is so much more fulfilling and speaks to my identity. sometimes i do go on reels now, but only for a few minutes, which makes it feel more special. I think many people say to go cold turkey, but social media genuinely can be fun if you let yourself move away from the mindlessness they try to pull you into on these apps. human based curation is always better than the addictive scroll. our generation is growing up without agency to choose their identity because of these algorithms, and i really worry what thats going to evolve into.
For mainstream culture maybe it's boring. But for niche cultures social media can be a great tool to keep in touch with new things. New ideas, new music and things that mainstream doesn't know that exist. Ofc using social media in moderation is necessary to refrain to just waist time overlooking the same thins again and again, but, if not de social media, many thigs wouldn't be discovered for many people arond the world
Some of the TH-camrs I watch have actually inspired me to take up new hobbies such as improv or cosplay, things I likely wouldn’t have started had it not been for the internet. But the only videos that get the bug views are crap that overstimulates rather than people who have put time and effort into something they’re passionate about.
The images of "gorp-core" clothing at 6:35 look like what some people in urban settings wear... baggy streetwear. I would never guess that those outfits fall into "gorp-core". Also, they look so effortless, like what a lot of people wear now: baggy clothes, athleisure, black hoodies, sweatpants.
You don’t need social media to relate to your friends, relatability come from your own experiences that’s how you evolve as person either growing closer to your friends or drifting apart, I’m 18 n had to get rid of my social media n detox because I wanna live, when you’re 30 or 40 what’re you going to tell your children nieces n nephews, the million trends you experienced or how you for example chipped your tooth doing a skate trick, you always have a choice
At some point you have to accept that we live in the digital age, and when we are 40 our experiences will be different from older generations, and that's fine. BTW mindfully participating or enjoying trends with people you love can create memories. It's important to have balance of course but we're young and shouldn't be so harsh on ourselves. We shouldn't rate good times above one another -- there is time for both @@ch66ry88
Man this is a great video! I’m glad the algorithm figured out I’ve been falling out of love with social media and recommended your video. The main reason I’ve been dropping off of the digital forum is because I feel like everything is disingenuous, I feel profited off of at every interaction I have. Irl you don’t get that as much. You could stare at a tree for an hour without a random ad popping us trying to sell you the same thing 10x that you don’t need… Someday I hope others will see this too and shift back to irl.
This was so well thought out, such an interesting topic and definitely changed my perspective on this topic. Amazing content hope to see more that you put out, keep it up!
just subscribed! great video. you managed to put into words something i've been thinking about for almost 10 years now. looking forward to the next videos :)
yknow, youtube's algorithm is interesting. i clicked on your video from a video by anthony fantano and I thought you'd be another pretty big youtuber but this video has way less reach than that one did. and i typically only watch 2000s video game reviews or economic theory videos, so the anthony fantano video was abnormally recommended to me. i was just like, oh i havent heard one of his videos in like 5 years let me see what he's up to. are you being for real though, the search engine can't hear me?
In a word, YES. I haven't been on social media since 2020, and it's one of the best things I've ever done. Ultimately, by teaching our children how to be redundant, we made them boring as s***.
Just discovering your channel. I really like the style and the editing. Your title cards are awesome. I am curious, in the section on content/art - I wonder how long-lasting content is intended to be. It seemed like your critique was content isn’t art, and that is contributing to culture slowing/becoming less interesting, but also you then noted Tyler and other musicians creating great art and building community from that. I think we still do have movies/plays/shows/music etc that will be longer lasting than the TikTok stuff, and that will likely define our culture when people look back on us. I wonder how what random newspapers/quick-type content people were consuming in the 1920s, 1860s, etc. That stuff was mostly forgotten, just like we forget the reels we watch and all that. Someone else left a really good comment about movies and books from years ago leaving larger impact on them than the last TH-cam videos they watched. I agree. The critiques of algorithms and its place within the marketing/targeted capitalism thing was on point. Great video!
Because social media showed everyone that everyone lives/lived very similar lives, now people desperately want to be unique and in the process, they make themselves less unique as a person. People havnt become more special, just more tribal through politics, communities, aesthetics, memes, etc
I’m sorry, I had this on in the background so I ended up watching the whole thing and I feel like so much nothing was said in this video. What is “the culture”? What does “an inspired culture” mean, especially when the topic of discussion is an abundance of art being more accessible and in higher production than ever? It’s even said in the video that “boring” is both subjective and what qualities of “the culture” are boring weren’t effable and no attempt was really made to describe it. The reduction of culture to art was extremely odd and the conclusion to the video being that “well I got off social media and it makes me appreciate art more” was like a cherry on top. The focus of this video was mainly a problem with the ability to appreciate things causing a nebulous feeling of boredom. The general topic is interesting, but I feel like it needed so much more investigation, maybe by referring to articles, videos, even just a current discourse. Maybe revisiting, more in depth, with a more specific aspect of culture or a particular subculture in mind as opposed to “the culture” as the topic could lead to a more meaningful conclusion…
I remember when I was thinking about buying something for like a week but i never once searched up anything related to it or said it out loud and then I got an ad for it lol
we're just having a very consumerist culture right now. This stems from the inability for subcultures to develop during the 2010s on the internet. Discord and other things has now made it feasible to develop subcultures online that are more than just communities around pieces or types of media again. however the affects of the drought of any meaningful youth movement in the 2010s has made it while not impossible, still hard for an alternative to mainstream culture to develop. The OSC and the OSC's overlapping communities are an actual modern youth subculture that is both fully fleshed out in it's own style and is mostly online, join a HFJONE shipping server and you will feel a similar bewilderment and confusion to a small town factory worker in the mid 60s stumbling into a hippie nightclub. Subcultures in the 2000s very much benefited from the internet and we are now slowly clawing that back which funny enough a good bit of evidence for is how late Gen Z is having late 2000s Nostalgia and are making their profiles look like Myspace profiles. I've read much on the development of youth culture from the 60s-80s and I believe that next year will be a great turning point as the mainstream is finally challenged by another cultural force after 15 years.
Also please stop equating modern culture to clothes or specific musicians we still have a film industry, it's not a very good one but you can make your video better by pointing out the decadence in the film industry, even then you shouldn't restrict yourself to art. Politics is VERY, VERY important and it has always been a factor, and in terms of current events you could make comparisons between what's happening now and similar things that happened in the 60s and 70s because most modern issues have a counterpart in those two decades, I'm glad you're making videos about culture because most people don't but please read and watch what other people have done in the field before making videos yourself.
@@Ashers_Journal I mean between him talking and the audio of his transitions the transition audio is significantly louder than his voice so I ever have to deal with loud transitions or struggle to hear his voice
I generally disagree, i feel good points were made but a boring culture is not the problem here or high accessibility to art (which i think is an incredible thing personally i love the freedom of choice you just have to set boundaries yourself and it lets you really get to know what you love ). I think yes authenticity is a problem and hyper consumerism is at the root of it but that has genuinely always been the problem. But you arent obligated to consume all facets of social media..some of them are just spaces people created for themselves and like minded people that just kept growing. I see where you're going but i don't think you've convinced me exactly why social media is boring 😅 is it just personal preference : it doesnt offer what you specificly value ig?whats boring is genuinely the most subjective thing EVER - and i say this as a maths enjoyer 😭
11:20 can't exactly name, but it was some news stuff, a Jerma985 teacher noise dub (if you want to know what that means, then waych one) and something about mythology.
0:01 yes American culture doesn’t exist anymore. We just keep recycling the same shit over and over again playing the telephone game ruining everything.
14:22 let me just demystify this for you. Are they able to guess it right sometimes? Yes. Does that seem eerie? Sure. But think about it. It's a probability and numbers game, so it's bound to happen eventually, it only seems like it happens more often now because they've been able to reprogram us to being used to seeing 100x the amount of advertisements on any given day and not even noticing it, until its just so spot on that it's uncanny, but it's not. You're just a slot machine and they have unlimited rolls.
Isn't it crazy how they keep designing more and more ways to put adds in front of us, but literally by doing so they have brought the value of an advertisement so low that we have to consume 100s for it to even be worth a couple of pennies. So they are not only taking time from you but they are also negotiating for your time to be worth less and less so that they will need even more of it.
Yeah I mean, i guess it’ll heavily depend on where you are and who you are. But generally, there’s nowhere to go, no time to do, and no one to do it with. Parks and malls are filled with no loitering signs, and jobs give less and less flexibility for workers to be able to relax and chat during their shifts.
Its not boring, its dead. The internet has caused us to cycle through trends and seasons like robots. Most peoples entire personalities are becoming algorithms
Thats crazy thing to say about like full human beings you probably don't personally know...just because they like "basic" or trendy things doesn't make them algorithm personalities...your personality is not equal to the things you consume..I'd like think people are more than just that.. everyone is complex not just the people who are outside the norm (tho we all participate in society to practically the same degree)🤦🏻♀️
it does look like social media has apparently democratized culture-which is good on paper. but, it comes at a cost, it commodifies it. the truth is that culture hasn’t been democratized, as you said, the gatekeeper has changed-it’s not the fashion houses, record labels, publications, or even the communities that power subcultures themselves-it’s the algorithms and ultimately the Big Tech companies and their executives like elon or zuck that control culture.

This is something a lot more young people need to realize! Learning to live in the moment and knowing what makes YOU happy keeps life refreshing. There are people in their 40s year who lived the same daily routine for 20+ years and struggle to question why they're so miserable as their lives stagnate horribly
This is so relatable with me

i feel like trends could be really cool if they wernt forgotten so quickly. we should be picking up these new aesthetics and adding them to our closet, literally. just because its not trending and new we shouldnt make a certain style redundant. one day i might wake up and feel like dressing in a tight fitted suit, the next day maybe i wanna wear a comfy hoodie and joggers. this can apply to other things than just clothes ofc.
Yesss, we don't even let these trends settle in
I agree I like a lot of trends we just go through them too quickly!
ik everyone blames TikTok and whatever but it literally is tiktok like remember when we had to go on Pinterest to see what aesthetic was trending and then that was our lives for the summer but now it’s random stuff that lasts a week then is forgotten 😭
ADHD FTL Rapid Fire Attention Spans
Yea it’s funny when you look at previous decades trends would last a year to the decade, songs, dances and fashion can define a decade 60’s hippies, 70’s disco, 80’s hair metal and bright clothing, 90’s counter culture alternative rock n rap either with baggy clothes or skinny with ripped jeans, 2000’s is emo and then there’s us a new dance trend every month or so where a song gets overplayed or redundant after a couple weeks and are swept by the mainstream while we look for new ones
The only "culture" that social media created is you being an obedient little servant receiving infinite amounts of advertisement from all directions.🤭
I find it so strange how people follow trends. I've always dressed differently from the rest and was bullied so badly for dressing what was true to me. Now it's considered weirdcore, goth, y2k and alien girl trends all the young folk think I'm going for when really i am an alien but I'm really just dressing like myself
B U
@@mostlydeceased did you just say CONSERVATIVE GOTHS???? When will the right stop taking away from us 😩
@mostlydeceased Your second sentence answered the first one. Some people follow trends because they don't want to be ostracized for being different.

The Barbie movie was kinda over hyped to the point of it being annoying tbh
It’s been over a year. This year was Wolverine vs Deadpool. There’s always a movie that does well. Doesn’t always mean it will leave a lasting impression.
I saw the title and I was like I kinda agree, but then I saw chromakopia on the thumbnail and something snapped
you and me both, buddy. that thing is a masterpiece in storytelling.
I wanted to say something about that too because it’s been a sincerely exciting year for music but I had not watched the video yet and realized it was probably about the modern consumption of music and the culture around it, not necessarily the music itself.
Finding out Tyler wants to be a film director made a lot of sense to me, Chromokopia felt very cinematic
Haha yeah i should totally clarify I LOVE both chromakopia and brat i think theyre probably my most streamed albums this year alongside chappel roan’s and Vince staple’s latest works !!
I put them in the thumbnail really just to draw eyes and because i did use the brat aesthetic in the video
Brat needs album of the year at the Grammys btw ill be rioting if it doesn’t happen
me when i saw brat. it’s not her best album but it’s very enjoyable for me as a long time charli fan!!
It creates a hive mind. Everyone thinks and speaks and dresses the exact same. Nobody can speak outside the norm; you're just in an echo chamber these days.

If you only look at the extremely mainstream shit, then yeah. Luckily the internet lets you choose what you want to see
You seriously believe that?
Hard agree
So many people think that working is the only actually meaningful thing you can do in your life. (Maybe they’ll say family is also important, but if you’d dare take more time off to spend more time with them, they’ll just call you lazy)
Also, sidenote, the work we do is usually working for some millionaire to have even more money while being compensated really poorly.
But, I really think that one of the most important detail here is our lack of actual social lives.
It’s all interconnected with our lack of time and hyper consumerism, but gosh does it stun our ability to do anything tangible as a group. Physical communities are rare, and our lack of exposure to different people makes people way more close minded (as a trans person, I can tell you that people just actually having time to socialize would make fearmongering against outgroups so much harder, and conservatives would have to change strategy.)
Anywayyyy, that was quite the tangent, lol
Certainly feeling that when fashion reels or reels in general uses the same 5 songs regardless of relevance to the looks there cycling through
I think part of this is the issue of “breadth” of culture but not “depth” of culture.
I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS
I love this topic! I have seen a really interesting art exhibition last year by a portugese artist who used modern building materials and suspended and arranged them in classical compositions... somehow it was a great way to show just how cheap and flimsy they are.

When everyone has access to every piece of content ever no one will be satisfied

Btw the audio for the transitions is a bit loud compared to everything else
Nice video though
I feel like art doesn't dictate the culture or trends but rather, the culture dictates the art and trends and how fast they come and go.
Favorite Carti clone is Ken Carson
In other words I disagree with the sentiment that "art is culture." When I think of culture, I think of family structure, ideology, religion, language, annual traditions, and lifestyle choices. In every society and culture, the art we see is just a reflection of all the aforementioned things.

I have skinny, mom and 70s jeans because I like them all 😅 And I am really nostalgic for the times when I wasn't even born and hope we somehow form at least a couple of big subcultures that don't rely on fashion only
You don’t need to have a consistent style, you’re not a brand. You can just wear whatever you like and makes you happy ☺️
@haleyhart9373 hhahha yeah

This is a good video but be careful, never romanticise the past.
I'd have quit social media by now, but I'm holding myself back because I want to remain relatable and easily contactable with my friends :/

In a word, YES. I haven't been on social media since 2020, and it's one of the best things I've ever done. Ultimately, by teaching our children how to be redundant, we made them boring as s***.

Dude literally
I appreciate you making the audio in this video randomly loud that I'm going to stop watching videos and read a book
Because social media showed everyone that everyone lives/lived very similar lives, now people desperately want to be unique and in the process, they make themselves less unique as a person. People havnt become more special, just more tribal through politics, communities, aesthetics, memes, etc
there are like 5 audio jumpscares in this video my boy, i give you permission to jump on TH-cam for a few hours to learn how to fix it
Boring? The real word would be horrifying
OMFG "-ness" rhymes with "-ness"!!! for real tho awesome video and awesome topic
Brat isn't boring to me, maybe it's because I like electronic music but still
I remember when I was thinking about buying something for like a week but i never once searched up anything related to it or said it out loud and then I got an ad for it lol
we're just having a very consumerist culture right now.
Politics is VERY, VERY important and it has always been a factor, and in terms of current events you could make comparisons between what's happening now and similar things that happened in the 60s and 70s because most modern issues have a counterpart in those two decades, I'm glad you're making videos about culture because most people don't but please read and watch what other people have done in the field before making videos yourself.

i love this video! the font you use and the overlay wow :)
Great video but youre transitions are much louder than your voice its a little jarring as an audio listener
He doesn’t have the youtube accent which is goated, maybe that’s what you mean with the audio
No i think he means the screaming. Its insanely offputting
@@Ashers_Journal I mean between him talking and the audio of his transitions the transition audio is significantly louder than his voice so I ever have to deal with loud transitions or struggle to hear his voice
@ got it, thanks!
This is well written
This is a really good video my dude!!
One question, what is the organ piece at 17:41 ?
I feel it's a problem.
These was a really good video!
Subscribed... Let's flood the internet with people again ❤
Why did you choose 4:3?
You have to step away form the internet to really see just how bad things are.
Yeah
I mean, i guess it’ll heavily depend on where you are and who you are. But generally, there’s nowhere to go, no time to do, and no one to do it with.
Parks and malls are filled with no loitering signs, and jobs give less and less flexibility for workers to be able to relax and chat during their shifts.
Great video, very well made for a channel of this size too
Does it even create a safe space ?
Its not boring, its dead. The internet has caused us to cycle through trends and seasons like robots. Most peoples entire personalities are becoming algorithms
Thats crazy thing to say about like full human beings you probably don't personally know...just because they like "basic" or trendy things doesn't make them algorithm personalities...your personality is not equal to the things you consume..I'd like think people are more than just that.. everyone is complex not just the people who are outside the norm (tho we all participate in society to practically the same degree)🤦🏻♀️
@feebee6810 hahaha you're an ant 🐜
17:41 song name?
love this content
am i dumb or is this vid a reupload i remember watching this months ago (while sending this comment i opened the description lmaoOOOOOOOOOOO)
If anything, it's opened the flood gates of our mediocrity. Showcasing how truly boring and pathetic we truly are.
I tried watching this...but...
...😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
Yes finally someone said it
it does look like social media has apparently democratized culture-which is good on paper. but, it comes at a cost, it commodifies it. the truth is that culture hasn’t been democratized, as you said, the gatekeeper has changed-it’s not the fashion houses, record labels, publications, or even the communities that power subcultures themselves-it’s the algorithms and ultimately the Big Tech companies and their executives like elon or zuck that control culture.
The answer is yes
Yet another video about how something sucks now lmao
Love your aestheic
Daring today aren’t we?
Hey man please stop jumpscaring me with loud noises I'm tryna draw right now and I feel like there's a scary monster in my room or something :/

Everyone has to be on their best behavior, for fear of ostracization.
Absolutely loved the video but my dude, the sudden jumps in volume between your voice and the sound effects were a little too much.
Boring people don't get bored
love the video
Earned a sub
Nice video
*insert eyeroll emoji here*
Hey, please work on your sound mixing. I had to turn the volume down on the sound effects you use, but then I couldn't hear your voice. Great video otherwise.
those side view shots are kinda weird ngl you're not a vibe bro
