- Hurricane season can be a frightening time for people on and near the east coast of the United States. But in Europe, it's a different story. Europe rarely ever sees full-on hurricanes reach its shores. But that may not always be the case.

Why Hurricanes Hardly Ever Hit Europe
------------------------------------------------------
Following is a transcript of the video:
You don't have to live far inland to avoid hurricanes. Just move to Europe. It rarely sees full-on hurricanes. But that may soon change. Following is a transcript of the video.
Europe hasn't had a hurricane reach its shore in over 50 years. Now don't get the wrong idea. Hurricane season still brings a hefty dose of wind and rain. But Europe has something that North America doesn't, when it comes to protection against hurricanes. Location.
Hurricanes usually form off the coast of West Africa, where warm water near the Equator and high humidity create columns of rapidly rising rotating air. It's the perfect recipe for a storm. Now the more warm, moist air that the system picks up, the stronger it becomes. That's why a tropical storms can quickly grow into a full on hurricane as it marches across the Atlantic. Now normally hurricanes are propelled on a westward track by the trade winds, caused by the Earth's rotation. That's why Europe as well as the West Coast of the US, rarely experience full on hurricanes. But that's not the whole story.
After all, since the year 2000, remnants of around 30 hurricanes have reached Europe. For comparison, Florida has seen 79 real hurricanes over the same time frame. By the time these remnants make landfall, they've went from a hurricane force, to a tropical storm or weaker. And that's where Europe's location comes into play. In order for a hurricane to head towards Europe, something crucial has to happen. It has to travel really far North by about 200 miles. Once a storm system reaches 30 degrees north, it encounters the subtropical jet stream. Which moves in the opposite direction of the trade winds. And therefore, blows the storm East But because the storm is now farther North, the waters underneath are colder by up to about five to 10 degrees Celsius. Which means less energy available to feed the storm. And as a result, it starts to die down by the time it's headed for Europe. Even though it's no longer a hurricane, it still packs a punch when it hits shore. In fact, most of these hurricane remnants will combine with other nearby cyclones and weather fronts, that create high winds and rain that mainly hit Ireland and Great Britain. But have been known to reach as far as Greece or even farther in Northern Russia. Typical damages include power outages, flooding, and occasionally casualties. Most recently the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia made landfall in Ireland and Scotland in 2017. About 50,000 households in Northern Ireland lost power. Three deaths were reported and downed trees closed many of the public roads and highways. This was the worst storm that Ireland had seen in 50 years. And it may be a sign of what's to come.
As global surface temperatures rise, it will also increase the sea surface temperatures in the Northern Atlantic. Which researchers estimate could contribute to an increase in the number of hurricane force storms that reach Europe. Some experts predict that by the end of the 21st century, Europe could experience, on average, 13 powerful storms each year during hurricane season. Compared to the two per year it sees now.

If this vid is about Europe can you use km and miles not only miles.
@Colin SINGSON [09M1] Still makes little sense that a science channel catering to an international audience wouldn't use metric units, regardless of the content. Metric is overwhelmingly used in science, and Americans already have tenuous grasp of this system partly because everybody including this channel, keeps catering to their ignorance of the system, rather than just putting it out there. I do see more and more using metric, though, so that's good.
Again forgetting about the UK I see😂
UK uses miles as well
@@George-li1yv And UK is on its way out of Europe in what's known as the economic and political suicide called Brexit, which is much due to their ingrained, infantile refusal to conform to anyone else, such as using kilometres when everyone else uses them, or accepting common regulatory standards of the EU single market.
Give it a couple of years and they'll come crawling back to both kilometres and the Euro, as they realise they have in fact not been screwed over, but been given special treatment this whole entire time.

1:26 please dont be fooled, there are a lot of mistakes and/or lies on this video, the actual distance for the hurricanes distance to traverse from Africa to Europe is actually 3822 miles not 200
200 miles to reach the sub tropical winds that then push the storm eastwards..
Edward Malone the picture he showed was a dotted line from the Coast of Africa to Europe, not a dotted line from the Coast of Africa to the sub tropic winds, if he was talking about what you said he was then he would of actually said it and showed a picture for it but he didn't so I would infer that he didn't actually know what he was talking about because he didn't explain it well or show a good picture for it
(I'm talking about the picture in the video, you are talking about a completely different subject about real events, I'm talking about the video, please pay attention)
edit: I just researched where the sub-tropic winds are, they definitely aren't 200 miles north off the coast, more like 800, the sub-tropic winds are roughly in the same latitude as The Rock of Gibraltar, it might be 200 miles to the tropics of Cancer though
which is larger than 2 football fields

Whats ridiculous about all this is he keeps going back and forth on using Standard Measurements and Metric Measurements.
"Standard measurements and Metric measurements"
My dude, I have some bad news for you. The waste majority of the planet is using the metric system over the imperial, so can't really call the imperial system the standard.
Also those 200 miles might be metric miles, so 2'000 km. Sure almost no one seems to be using the metric mile outside of Sweden as far as I've seen, but it is still a thing.
@Cain Lolsson Schools teach us here that it's called the Standard Measurement, although i agree with you and im sure it's strange as hell for you guys seeing us using mph, acres, pints, quarts and gallons, usually when someone calls it the Imperial System, they're usually foreigners, no one here calls it the Imperial, infact tool kits even say "Standard and Metric tool set" when buying one. i'll be honest, i can't orientate myself when someone says 1km, or 5cm, or 32C degrees, have to convert it to Standard to know what it's even all about, it's pretty bad.

Yes 1:30 I was thinking same thing that's way more than 200 miles lol
I am sure you dont know lots of other things too, so it's Ok!
I like how a few days after this video was uploaded a Category 1 hurricane made landfall in Portugal xD
Leslie (2018) was predicted to make landfall in the south of Portugal as a category 1 hurricane, but in last few hours deviated towards north and finally made landfall in the north of Portugal as a tropical storm. However, Ophelia (2017) provoked unprecedented wildfires which killed 47 people, without even making landfall in the country. It is appaling the ignorance in respect of the worst portuguese natural disaster in the last 50 years.
The only hurricane my state has sorta suffered from was Sandy. Sandy actually put this random ball in our yard that we kept for a day until we popped it.
Including Turkey but not Russia in your map of Europe seems rather strange, apart from that very interesting video
There is kaliningrad in Map so Russia here but they make Greece has European part of Turkey . Amateurs
Europe has some weird borders. Look at America, it is just straight paralel lines.
@@Ersiiin Europe's borders are naturally forming borders based on geography and cultural and political divides throughout history.
The US's borders are artificial straight-lined borders made more recently, you see the same in borders the Middle East and parts of Africa from during Colonial times.
It's fine for the US (being 1 single country) but nonsense straight-line borders make no sense for dividing countries and cause all sorts of strife within and between said countries.
Turkey is not part of Europe dumbass
@@hhhhergc224 yes it is
The real question is, why are you making turkey europe (which only 5% actually is while the rest is Asia) and not Russia at all?
Because of “Treaty of Paris” 1856
because heavy european influence on the culture of the turks since the ottoman empire... it was common that some turkish (ottoman) women married german aristocrats, and it isn't a secret that there was an existing cultural experienice between the preußisches Reich and Ottoman Empire.... after calling Turkey... there was a heavy french influence in the turkish language, culture and fashion... still western culture is influencing turkish culture more and more... thats why Turkey is cultural as european as any other south european balkan states or russia... its like the european country bosnia herzogovina (the majority is muslim but still european) its the same with Turkey the majority is muslim but they are a european/western thinking society mostly
@Illuminati well Israel and New Zealand attempt on Eurovision Song Contest made by European Countries FOR European Countries... don't blame me XD
@Illuminati and actually Turkey is Asia Minor(Europe and Western Asia).. not a middle east country
@@mirellesahin5003 This is how I know you know jackshit about Asia lol middle east countries ARE in Western Asia and so is Turkey.
So we’re just not talk about how me and my Floridians are about to get demolished by hurricane Dorian?

It should be noted that Europe, while they don’t get hit by Tropical Cyclones, they do get Extratropical Cyclones, there called Wind Storms for them. But with Global Warming, Tropical Cyclones maintaining their tropical characteristics and strength into Europe.
Meanwhile in the Philippines:
2-3 typhoons at once
Hungary ate them.
clever
ba dum tssss
That was not 200 miles more like 2000
I live in the coast of northern Brazil/Amazon coast. We never EVER had a hurricane or tropical storm, because they go north and avoid us. But now I fear that can change.
Now Europeans would think: if refugees avoided us like the tornados
Yeah, would be the case if the USA didn't just tear down all the middle east countries and killed thousands and thousands of innocent people that now had to flee...
Herman Willems you really pulled the emergency breaks on the joke
@@HermanWillems The majority of them aren't from Syria.
They are economic migrants.
US got tornadoes and hurricanes.
Wow.
Yeah, way to go buzzkilling jerk!
to be fair, Europe gets Medicanes, extratropical cyclones that form into the Mediterranean Sea and can reach intensities similar to Tropical Storms, or even CAT1-2 hurricanes, they're named by the University of Berlin although they don't have an official alphabetical list of names for each season. These last few years, Europe has been getting one to two medicanes a year and they will become more frequent and intense as climate changes for the worse, impacting primarely Greece, Albania, Cyprus, Turkey, Northern Africa and Southern Italy, although even Southern France has been hit by medicanes before.
There is no such thing as Medicanes
It's called extratropical depressions

American: Dammit illegal migration of storms time to build a wall
not all of us think like that
Yes, as we know all Americans voted for Donald Trump, including Hillary, if you ignore the fact that Trump is only supported by boomers
Cold Laundry your head is up your ass if you think Trump is only supported by boomers. Stop watching CNN all day.
When a subtropical storm and a medicane hit Europe on the same day... oh 2020 keeps on giving
Yeah
As someone who lives in Ireland, extreme weather never happens here. We have no active volcanos, no earthquakes (at least none that would be noticed), no hurricanes or tornadoes. Ophelia was kind of bad, but not when compared to other countries. Ireland is just so used to everything being calm and peaceful, that a much bigger deal is made about something when it does happen here. We get one foot of snow and the country closes down and everyone is rioting and looting for bread, or writing "HELP" in the snow.
Ireland
A foot snow for the UK is huge!
Also, the UK has 30+ tornadoes per year per every square mile
2:28 i got sea sick
30 hurricanes near europe since 2000?
*Philippines🇵🇭- I AM JOKING TO YOU?*
It's because our country is just close to the Pacific and it's on the good location for typhoons/hurricane. Even though these cyclone is destined to cross in China, Korea or Japan, our country must taste it first.😂
20-30 cyclones per year is no joke. That's why our country is called a typhoon belt.
They are probably joking, europe is so lucky while philippines literally has 1-2 typhoon every time when a typhoon finished hitting philippines...
We are also known Storm Breaker too

Don't worry folks, Trump has talked about nuking hurricanes. That will show mother nature who's boss.
If je nukes them, nothing Will happend. Hurricans are huge storm so damage Will be small. Second Europe wouldn't let that happend cuz of radiation and explosion would kill thousands od animals and imagine dropping luke 40 nukes at year. That would totally destroy air, animals and ocean...
