    The aerial video is cool. And it's somehow satisfying to watch each step of progress. I envy your chance for a father/son project of this scale. Be safe, and best wishes.

    Thank you for sharing the process, I'm really enjoying the videos. I'm also amazed at what it must have taken the pioneers in the old days to move out west in a wagon and then build their cabins when they arrived at their destination. Building your own home with your father is awesome. I don't believe any other home you may live in the rest of your life will mean as much as this one. I would also bet there is no amount of money you would take for it! Your dad is quite a fella, and you two are an inspiration to many folks out here watching the progress. Take care and God bless!

    Hello from Southern Ontario, it's been a lot of "Outside" fun following your project with your dad. It sure is a lot of work. I've always thought that it's not all about finishing the project, rather than the experience and hard work getting there. I too have an ongoing project with my father which involves a lot of the same work and can't get enough of it! Also, i appreciate that your're posting videos as you progress, rather than all at once. It keeps the channel inviting and teaches "some" people the value of patience.

      As a safety professional I have to deal with people like you all the time; the biggest problem is that you rarely injure or kill yourselves, it is usually someone else that has to die for your ignorance.
      The Unit I work for has not had a work related fatality yet, but there were several deaths recently where I had provided my opinions due to problems I saw. They had all thanked me for my opinion and said don't worry about it...... the people making the decisions to ignore me were not the people that died.

    Thanks Outside: You brought back a lot of memories from the summer of 1963 when my dad & I harvested about 20 cedars from our swamp . Its good to remove the bark ASAP . We used 1 cedar cut down 2 years before but not debarked. It still shows the scars of an arduous bark removal. I used Javel water to remove any marks the dragging caused. Thanks again; Brian 77

    We just dropped 6 large trees, which will leave us with about 33 8' logs for a vertical cabin. The bark is peeling easily! We are considering using a 12x24 barn and making an opening for another 12x22 section made of the logs. Don't know if we can get around zoning, but if so it will be very economical. The land is slopy and only 2/3 of an acre, but there are flat areas.

  • @davyjones232
    @davyjones232 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Skidding logs is best with a lifting boom jig....so the bark does not load up with dirt and muck....which dulls the saw mill blades. Some saw mills have a little kerf cutting saw to cut away the dirty bark.

    Thanks for the video. Been watching for a few years now. Just wish you and your dad would wear a hardhat and chaps when using chainsaws. I'm a forester and worked with a guy who had cut firewood for 15 + years. I always told him to wear chaps and he said he never had a problem. One day he asked me where he could get a pair of chaps. He had been cutting firewood and ran the saw across his thigh. Had many stitches. Just want people to be safe.

    I do a fair amount o logging with a tractor and looking at building a remote camp. You sure have a nice peace of property. Carefull skidding the logs. If they fetch up on a stump you could flip the tractor over. If you could short chain it and raise the log a bit of the ground or get a nose cone to fit over the log it would be a bit safer. Great video by the way.

    I own a large tree plantation and have wondered why you cut the trees so high leaving that huge stump like the one you are sitting on in this video. I realize clustered trees leave little choice sometimes when trying to preserve the remaining trees but the single trees could be cut much closer to the ground and that bowl wood is denser and will last longer as an exposed end.

    • @willemkauffeld7679
      @willemkauffeld7679 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      or when he was placing the logs on the foudation that he rigged something with water to make it level while he could have used a laser level.

    • @77BABYJACK
      @77BABYJACK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      does it really need to be that exact? My house is 103 years old and a marble wouldn't lay still anywhere but my countertops and we are OK!

    • @willemkauffeld7679
      @willemkauffeld7679 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn't need to be that exact, but he wanted it to be, then he made some contraption that took him quite some time while using a laser was way faster than his water tube things.

    • @TheOutsiderCabin
      @TheOutsiderCabin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well here's the thing Willem:
      1. I could have loaded my trailer full of stone ...if I wanted to break it.
      2. Laser levels are great indoors, but they can't shine very far in the daylight at any distance. Unless you have the cash for something top-end. Which I don't.

    THINK about WHERE are you hooking up to the tractor! If you get jammed up while towing from the wrong point, that tractor has enough pull to flip over backwards and squash you like a bug before to can even THINK to jump clear. CAUTION my friend.

    • @TheOutsiderCabin
      @TheOutsiderCabin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's definitely a good idea to be mindful of such things. I am familiar with my W4 and how it acts under various loads. It helps that the hitch is extremely low. Anyway, I appreciate the caution.

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hes hooking below the centerline of the axle so there shouldnt be much tendency for it to tip, if for some reason he was hooking the chain up high above the wheels itd have a tendency to wheelie anytime the logs fetched up but the tractor had good traction

      Right now, we just carry water in with us. Eventually, I want to set up a rainwater collection and filtering system. Or maybe a well.
