I also like the wee background story about catching your first fish on the fly, it's those great moments that always stay with you.. My first catcher was a Partridge & Orange spider, still one of my favourites.
Enjoying your posts Dave, keep up the good work! Nice mix of trad and deadly modern patterns. I was 12 when I first caught on a fly. It was a black and peacock spider fished dry in a sunny flat calm in the Lake District. 4 x 9inch wild brownies!
i think my first fly i caught trout on was the bibio, i tie the butcher as a spider using the small neck feathers from the pheasant good way to use them and just red hackle fibers as tail on size 14 and 16 for midges works great
dat was een red tag vast geknoopt aan een nylon draad onder een plugje had toevallig een doosje van sheakspere bij me de eerste vis was een brasem de tweede een kopvoorn en de derde een barbeel de andere dag ruilde ik mijn spin hengel in voor een vliegvis hengel dit was 35 jaar geleden en ben nooit meer gestopt met de vlieg hengel.

Used the Butchers and both Zulus. they were the go to flies when i was a kid. Still tie flies inspired by them...and I'm 64 now

A black pennel with a pink flo Glo brite floss tail, still go back to it now and then 😄
