For most of yall, this piece is simply an elegant march that is often used as graduation music. However, this music connects with me deeply as a musician.
The teachers wanted me to play something for our elementary school graduation, since I was somewhat good on piano at the time. This piece happened to be in my piano book at the time, and it said the piece is played in noble processions and graduations. So I played it. Fast forward 6-7 years and I'm now a senior. For the last three years, I've played this song with my band for my high school's graduations. It saddens me upon realizing that this year I will be listening to this music while I walk in those robes. That I won't be starting the stopwatch before I bring my instrument to my face to see how long we will play this piece non-stop for the graduating seniors. That I won't be playing the music for a graduation ever again maybe.
And just seeing how much I've changed as a person as well, from a naughty 5th grader nervously playing this on the piano to a quiet, laid-back senior who is looking forward to graduating but also not mentally ready to say farewell to my band friends and the music department.
Not ready to say farewell to my music department that I think I've contributed to greatly but some person who I won't say [*cough band director cough*] calls me "selfish" for auditioning into honor bands at the regional, state, and national level, being the first (and only person so far) to audition into state and national honor bands ever in my school district's history.
edit: completely forgot about this post until I got a notification for a reply on this post just now. just to clarify the last paragraph, since now that I'm reading it, I'm kinda surprised I wrote it that way: I miss the high school music department, I miss the band director, and I miss everyone in the band. but it's just at the time, I had so many emotions at the same time of me loving the music department and hating some aspects of it at the same time, and I probably made the director and our department sound worse than I intended, so very sorry about that. to all those in the replies encouraging me to continue my passion, thank you! just an update on my current situation: I am currently a clarinet performance music student in my 3rd year. the transition to college/university has been anything but smooth, and it felt like as soon as I was getting used to the new lifestyle, getting to make more friends, getting to be more comfortable being around other music geeks and nerds... as soon as all of these happened, the pandemic had to happen. now it feels like high school 2.0 all over again, as I am living with my parents once again and I just don't get the freedom I used to have when I lived in the dorms.

I think the reason that Elgar hated the popular 'Land of Hope and Glory' lyrics (that were later added to the tune by Benton) was because the lyrics ride over the part of the tune that is supposed to be decribing the horrific 'circumstance' of war. So you can see why Elgar was unhappy because the lyrics are a bit of a travesty against Elgar's true message about the pomp of a glitzy military march contrasted against the real horror of war :)

Absolutely brilliant. Elgar wrote this as a pure confection meant to (in his own words) "knock 'em flat", and boy, did he ever! Never listen to the sung version, Land of Hope and Glory. Elgar didn't write those words and he didn't like them. They detract hugely from the sheer boyish exuberance of this wonderful piece.

I clicked on it, because I love this piece. Was very surprised to hear a chorus. Never knew there was a version that had a chorus. It's certainly great without it, but I must admit (even though I didn't catch the words) it brought tears to my eyes.
