That’s because it became woke. It removed itself from honest good storytelling and started catering to a younger crowd and focused too much on the graphics to the point where it literally became a graphics system test game i stead of just a good game for game’s sake. It’s really sad

To me, this soundtrack is one of the best ever created; it totally captivated my imagination back when I was 7, and now, 20 years later, I have a more musically theoretical understanding of just how intricate and complex and wonderfully atmospheric this music is. I mean I think some parts of Gemlik Base's baseline are going into the microtonal tonality! I hope to make a cover of the whole soundtrack someday. I truly believe David Bergeaud is one of the greatest and most cerebral composers of our time. He truly is a genius!
Side note, two years ago I was asked by a designer at Insomniac Games to create the soundtrack to a spin-off Ratchet and Clank side scrolling shooter made in Dreams for the PS4- I recreated a reimagining of the Metropolis, Kerwan theme as if it was created today, taking inspiration from electronic acts such as Pendulum and Disclosure to recreate the tune; giving a slightly more modern and arcade-ish sound to the original. You can find it on my channel if this piques your interest!

What I love about the Soundtrack of this game is each planet them song has a ambient beat where is always connected to the environment of the planet that you are. Like Orxon feel like a place hostile, scary, uneasy and that you must be careful. Pokitaro (sorry if i misspelled the name) feels a utopian place where you feel could take vacation here. Batalia feels you are indeed in a battlefield and lock and loaded to destroy every ennemis you came to cross. I can go on with more planets Soundtrack but i bet you get the idea

I personally love how when you go to Orxon as Clank it's what you described, but you're pretty much defenceless, since you are playing Clank and the music emphasizes on that, by being super creepy.
But when you come back as Ratchet, it's still hostile toxic and unwelcoming, but this time you've got guns. So it's more funky, yet still unwelcoming and hostile.

This game could just fucking blow anyone away. I love anything that theorizes what it would be like to be on other planet with interesting music to create a theme. Such a fascinating game. I would die for the 2&3 to be exact style and everything like the original, but just new planets, gadgets, weapons, & armor. They had so much potential to blow peoples minds with the style and level designs. This game has literally changed my entire life. One thing stood out to me from since I was a child, the idea of exploring different planets and what it would be like to be on one, just to see what other life exists. I say that there are mysteries out there. I adore the developers of this game and the dedication and love put into it and wish more people thought like this and would be inspired by the unique design. I don’t care if it’s old and people prefer good graphics. The point in old style is that they don’t give it too much, they keep it even for it’s game. Fits perfectly as is, no need to make it too good 😂

This series is so full of atmosphere and life in terms of music design. David Bergeaud is great! Shouts out to David Wise, Josh Mancell, Saki Kaskas, Rom di Prisco, and Koji Kondo! The one thing I love about all these tunes in the OST is that every planet has a unique vibe established by the stinger at the beginning. For example:
Veldin: The tutorial level but its track shows that you are not on Earth and are in a different universe.
Novalis: The first "real" level and it wants you discover more of the planet.
Kerwan: One of my favorites in the entire series. Easily recognizable and a powerful track that makes you feel like you're in a metropolis.
Aridia: Combines both a deserted atmosphere with a funk techno influence to show the factory nearby.
Eudora: Again, a combo of simple notes for the nature setting with a techno beat to show Drek's forces taking over.
Nebula G34: Combines the vastness of space with a techno vibe to showcase an advanced research facility
Blackwater City: Again, a powerful track like Kerwan's but with a darker tone to show the nighttime landscape and invasive Amoeboids.
Umbris: A lot of funk and techno with a distorted background vocal track to warn you of a twist.
Batalia: Literally makes you feel like on a battlefield locked and loaded.
Gaspar: A planet with a techno vibe as you search for a key piece of tech
Pokitaru: A remix of Veldin's theme but now with a more laid-back and carefree atmosphere.
Orxon: Very suspenseful and morbid to let you know that this is not where you want to be. Hostile and cruel
Hoven: Very fast paced to let you know you have to save the planet before it's too late.
Gemlik Base: Really nails the emptiness and even scariness of space.
All in all this OST really makes you feel like you're in a different place each time and it changes moods effortlessly.

Best Ratchet & Clank game by far, best soundtrack David Bergeaud ever made. Those who disagree simply never played it first.
This soundtrack was mostly composed of built-in samples used on hardware like Synthesizers and Drum machines, which was the staple of 90's music culture into the 2000's and was the physical variant of what most people can easily do now downloading one or a DAW in 10 minutes like FL Studio, Reason, or Cubase (which were heavily used then, too).
None of this is to say that Bergeaud didn't inject his own genius into these works- because for all the music like this around this timeframe, Bergeaud's work holds up massively well in light of it all. Music is CRITICALLY important to mediums like VG and Film (usually around 1/3 of the experience), and the Ratchet & Clank series wouldn't be as revered and celebrated to this day without the iconic soundtrack that helped define exactly what Ratchet & Clank was (at least back on PS2, before it went soft).

2 has way better and more refined combat. 1 does a lot of things well but the the combat is a bit jank. It did not seem like they knew if they wanted to make a platformer or a shoter. 2 refines the combat as well as having some platforming, lots of gadgets and minigames like the dogfighting and racing wich are all a step up from their counterparts in 1. @@Hysteria98 if R&C1 is the best in the franchise, it shouldn’t matter when you played it… it should just stand up. A game that is truly the best of its franchise will be recognised as such by new players, but this one is not. You only say it’s the best because of nostalgia, your opinion would be different if you hadn’t played it when it first came out.
As the other person said, the combat and gameplay is unrefined and missing many QOL improvements that the sequels introduced. And no, it’s not a matter of ‘you’re trying to play R&C1 the wrong way’ - R&C1 doesn’t have strafing or weapon upgrading, which makes its combat uninteresting and painful towards the end as enemies get harder but your guns don’t upgrade. People were saying this even at the time. R&C1 is only the best in the series if you’re nostalgic for it or you like the story.

I used to play this game when I was a kid, it is one of the games of my childhood. Now that I've grown up, and as a musician (drummer), I can propperly appreciate how good it is. We're talking this game got released in 2002, and it sounds amazing to this day. One of the best soundtracks ever composed, there are no bad tracks, every song has something interesting that makes you wanna keep listening, they are full of charisma. Amazing soundtrack.

When I was a kid I didn't really love music the same way I do nowadays, but somehow I know all the songs from the OST. Not only because it's my favorite game ever, but the music is fantastic to the point I still remember all the levels by only hearing their song.

Such a great nostalgia trip. Brings me back to the 3 times I got absolutely stuck in this game and the one time I soft-locked it.
1st time: Kerwan, I thought Big All was the end of the level and was too dumb to check my map.
2nd time: The rising water level on Rilgar. It didn't come to me that I had to long jump my way through it and I was stuck on it for a long time. Ever since that level, I've had an oddly specific fear of swimming underwater under a hard surface. Like I can swim underwater, but only with direct air above my head, to this day.
3rd: Freaking Pokitaru. A simple yet annoying sticky situation: I HAD NO IDEA HOW DO DO A DAMN POWER-SLAM!!! For some reason the help-desk bubble, just didn't show, until it finally did for a big "Ohh" moment.
The soft lock was after a bunch of playthroughs and came to me out of boredom. On Orxon I tried to skip the magnet boots as Clank to see what would happen if you try and get them as Ratchet. Turns out you can't... You get soft-locked is what happens.
    Great memories!

@@fatcatfroggie Well Ratchet and Clank is my childhood favorite. I seriously want to have the complete collection some day. From PS2 to 5. Hell, I'll get the remake as well, I don't care. It's Ratchet & Clank, there just isn't anything like it out there

You know a soundtrack for a game is good when your 60 year old dad who never plays games can remember the name of the planet the song is from. I guess me and my brother played this masterpiece enough to sear early game songs into his head.
