  • After Eurobike 2018 Ray and I headed south for a few kms on the bike. First up (and I really mean UP!) the Stelvio Pass. At 24km / 8% from Prato - it was a solid day out with some amazing views and magnificent descending.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. They brought back the memory of last fall when I celebrated my rebirth with my racing bike six weeks after a cancer surgery with a ride on the Stelvio. At the time, I had tears in my eyes after the ride and thanked fate that the surgery was successful. Because I was pretty tired I did not have much pictures at the time. Thank you for the wonderful pictures.

Once you conquer the stelvio by bike you can do anything,so mind expanding. I broke my back due to a car running into me from behind.after surgery it was hard ,everyone said i couldnt do it due to weight, age and injury but i proved myself wrong and then went and did zoncolan and mortirolo,so never say never, never give up,you are way stronger than you think!

This is actually my very first climb I did EVER. Took me 3 hours and 21 minutes on a mountainbike. I had just started cycling at that point and was afraid I couldn't handle the proper road cycle gearing with the larger front sprockets. I remember having to pee and while we were doing it another boy with his dad passed us. We got back on the bikes, passed them before the next hairpin and we didn't see them until after we got to the top, ate something at the restaurant there and started to get down again. This will always be the climbs I love the most! I definitely want to do it again on a road bike!

Sept 11 2019. From Prato - road was closed, then got opened as we set off. It was such a beautiful day it actually got warmer as we made elevation. The biggest thing i noticed was the friendliness of everyone going up and descending: cars, bikes and bikers. It's such an enormous feat, that it really does bring out the best in people. The top is very cold, and I got 79.1kmh descending! Take clothing, eat and drink - do not mess with this beast. Oh - the Zoncolan is harder. Much, much harder. But Stelvio, is a major accomplishment.

2:50 the song says "there's room for everyone".
Immediately after, ray has two cars pass him *safely* around a hairpin bend.
going back to the quote in the song. Europe has clearly understood this, and when you can see this understanding on the Stelvio Pass, you know it can work anywhere.
Meanwhile in Australia: You can't finish saying the word "cyclist" before people start losing their fu*king minds.

Nope. While I agree they're a good idea, if someone can't see a cyclist on the road without a light on their bike they're going to have difficulty just getting into the car to drive it.

I think lights are a necessity now because of all the people texting and driving. Its another safety alert to signal distracted drivers.

@@piertechinc I think texting and driving is the real issue there that needs to be addressed.

Seems like the drivers there have more respect for cyclists than in my country (Slovakia).

Martin R. 1.5m law. Most people don't respect cyclists, they just don't want to argue with the cops. Italy is 500% better for it ie for every 500 cars that pass me 1 is an idiot, the other 499 are just better at texting or facetiming.

Thanks for the reply! You may be right. I've had only limited exposure to the road traffic in Italy, in the Luino/Lugano region. Very positive experience ;)

The difference even between the last year and the year before that is that cycling is now a real pleasure and so so so much safer, but there are still too many texting drivers. When I'm in my car i just beep long at them as they weave onto my side of the road.

It was more the fact that we were supposed to be enjoying the 'downhill all the way back to town' part...and then found out we still had to pedal hard against it...while going downhill. :)
