The second film should be Thiruda Thiruda not Bombay where he created magic. Too many covers interrupting the interview.. One of the best song in Roja was Pudhu Vellai Mazhai which was not all descried. The detail interview of Mani Ratnam about composing should be shown rather than covers...

Whether live musicians or technology such as synthesiser etc. One cannot forget the Maniratnam movie Thiruda Thiruda with hit songs like Koncham Nilavu and Veerapandikkottayile. The duration of the videos shoud be extended if you are showing more covers. I am very much interested in the behind the scenes of a hit song than covers as we get thousands of covers in you tube. Roja, the album which changed the face of India Cine Music completely. India Cinema Music can be clearly categorised as before Roja and after Roja. Most of ARR's Popular Hindi songs were first created in Tamil and later they were recreated in Hindi. Most of those lyrics were just the translation from Tamil with some minor changes to suit the diction and notes of Hindi. Is it right to call those who translated as the lyricist? They should be called as Translators right!!

Am surprised to read this from a fellow South Indian. Have you forgotten what Illaiyaraja Sir did for Tamil film music? One who changed the entire idiom of a film song? Rahman was another of his clones who cleverly recycled his works using a heightened sound quality. Nothing original about him.

It was plain luck that 'Roja' came to be dubbed in Hindi and the songs caught on. And when a film works the songs work too. If you go further back, we have had Shanker Jaikishan whose music won pan India acclaim and had a huge influence on South Indian music too. Every era has game changers, no entity can be singled out. Besides where is Rahman today? Jobless in Bollywood and hardly has done anything of serious note in Tamil cinema. What works for him is a well established PR machinery.

And before y'all come at me with hate comments, No, Hindi is not the national language of India. India is such a beautiful country with a diverse range of languages. The rukmani cover is in tamil... The songs were send by the people and it's possible that they didn't receive many entries from south... Its a guess and i could be wrong...
Maybe because world relates to Hindi better. Me also not from India, I prefer to listen to the Hindi versions but yes the other versions are also great I had listened to all the versions of all the 90's songs but nowadays I only look for the Hindi ones.

Great stuff. But I felt the flow of the whole interview was a bit interrupted by the placement of a lot of cover songs. It would be even good if the number of cover songs is reduced.
Loving the series so much. The songs were originally made in Tamil and I would love to see them in tamil when you play it. It's bilingual I understand but playing almost 90 percent of everything in Hindi is a bummer

Good questions but i felt there where too many covers. Every line was interrupted with a cover. Somehow i feel ur fishing for covers from artists instead of having interview time.
Actually before Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda (Tamil) had different genres of tracks - which are mindblowing even today. Look at the complexity of songs like Chandralekha, Veera pandi kotayile or even Thee thee. Those songs really meant that Rahman was on a league of his own. Bombay, was more commercialized, and appealed to Hindi speaking audiences more. But his initial work in Tamil was what set off a new trend in the early 90s/
O2 folks, please STOP using these remixes or so called improvised version of ARR hits...those are neither a right reproduction of the actual music or bring out the apt appreciation of the genius is.... please use the originals as composed in the original language.....

I just don't understand why you put the substandard cover or remix version of Rahman's songs to demonstrate what Mani says. When Mani said 'he mixed Japanese drums into it', did you even understand what he meant by that? If you understood it, you would have shown the original song clip to make the audience listen to the sheer thunder of those drums. And these people who are doing the cover and remixes, they are butchering it without any kindness.
Why so much cover music in between, I really cannot connect with the emotion that Maniratnam sir is expressing. It would have been better if the real song clips were played rather than the covered one.

I just don't understand why you put the substandard cover or remix version of Rahman's songs to demonstrate what Mani says. When Mani said 'he mixed Japanese drums into it', did you even understand what he meant by that? If you understood it, you would have shown the original song clip to make the audience listen to the sheer thunder of those drums. And these people who are doing the cover and remixes, they are butchering it without any kindness.
