- A.R. Rahman contacted Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. But both refused to sing for him.
They hadn’t heard of A.R. Rahman. Alka Yagnik considers this ‘the biggest mistake of her career.’
Later, the 1st song she sang for Rahman, she found his working style ‘awkward’ and came out of the recording studio highly dissatisfied.

Alka still redeemed herself later by singing amazing songs for Rahman later -- Taal, Guru, Zubeida, Lagaan, Tamasha, Yuvraaj, Slumdog but Sanu never got a chance again apart from the song Mil Gaye Mil Gaye from Kabhi Na Kabhi which again was recycled from Rahman's classic Anjali Anjali pushpanjali.

Rahman mostly preferred Udit Narayan over Kumar Sanu. There are many examples like 'Rangeela', 'Dil Se', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Pukar', 'Swadesh', etc. This benefited Udit Narayan's career. Even Udit Narayan won his first National Award for Best Male Playback Singer for 'Lagaan', for the compositions of Rahman. On the other hand, Sanu's career was mostly limited to Nadeem Shravan.

It was the greatness of ARR that he still used her when singers were lining up to sing for him. Alka and Kumar "Who" are nobodies compared to ARR.
I can't imagine anyone else singing "Roja Jaaneman" other than the legendary singer Late Shri S. P. Balasubramaniam!

IMHO, I would humbly say that she didn't do any mistake. She was busy so she couldn't sing for Rahman that time. This has happened to many singers.

She made a mistake by listening to kumar sanu at that time. Ar rahmam never forgave sanu for this. Alka yagnik learnt that she was wrong and sang some of her best songs for rahman saab. Lets be honest kumar sanus voice would not have suited ar rahmans music but it suits alka yagnik

We Indians doesn’t know how to rate the talent.

Wow. Good job Kumar Sanu and Alka refused. They were sing every song. A R Rahman's music was so different and revolutionary in the 90 and there was a clear differentiation from the rest. Using great artists unknown to the industry added to this revolution and success.

Alka is very frank. She felt very bad for not singing for Roja but later she sang lot of super hits songs for A R Rehman. Her insights about A. R Rehman are awesome. Very good episode. Looking forward for next week

I appreciate many of her insights and frankness too but what we should recognise here is that she's not someone like Shekhar Kapur who has a good ear and a broad mind to understand music of international levels. All she liked about Arr were just his melodies and not all his compositions. So, she has a typical Bollywood ish taste in music and nothing more than that for her to admire ARR's genius. Even now she's speaking like there are better composers than Rahman. Truly unfortunate 😭 that she's the first singer chosen to speak for Arr in this entire series!

@@anantha1201 because they knew him much before he was a music director. So no question of refusing and so on. They knew whose son he was as well as who Rehman was. SPB knew him ever since he was a toddler itself
@@deepakluther4964 ya , and these 2 singers were way more busy than Kumar Sanu & Alka but still they sang in all 3 languages. So, question of refusal doesn't even come. Plus, they very well know who Maniratnam and Balachander are unlike those ignorant North Indian artistes who think only they're artistes and no one else!

Chitra ma'am and SPB sir had given us the most melodious and memorable songs of Roja. Can't imagine those songs in anyone else's voice. Alka ma'am has her own unique voice, but Chitra ma'am is irreplaceable for Roja and Bombay ❤

A lot of people are saying that Alka refused Rehman due to ego and Rehman being a new comer and if he was an established composer she would have done the songs in a jiffy. I guess same can be said about Rehman too he wanted Alka because Alka was the most preferred playback in 90s and was in peak of her career. He knew the quality of her voice otherwise he could have chosen lots of other singers for his debut as his first choice like Kavita, sadhna, Anuradha, Lata. Only when she refused it went to chitra who sang pretty good.
AR is highly innovative and that has made him an exceptionally great music composer. That he does lot of experiments becomes clear from his compositions. He goes into the depth of feelings and materialises in his compositions. Naturally he reacher the hearts of the music lovers.

Incredible episode.. loved the honesty with which Alkaji spoke ..on hindsight I’m not sure how Roja’s songs would have sounded in Sanudaa’s voice .. although I love Kumar Sanu’s voice .. we would not have got the opportunity to get introduced to someone like Hariharan..

Being a telugu native I used to find lyrics unusual and then I started listening to the original versions of those songs. His music will always occupy some corner of my heart.

Puthu vellai mazhai is the original and sung by another legend Sujatha Mohan. Hindi version was dubbed by chithramma.
I am an absolute fan of Alka ji & Sanu da but some things happen for good. Roja songs in voice of SPB sir (love him) & Chitra ma'am were not only superb but it also gave that native originality to what was a south Indian movie.
The latter collaborations of ARR & Alka ji gave some of the most melodious & superhit songs.

@@sameershahezaan883 Shreya Ghoshal was singing almost all major songs for a decade from 2000's..even during that busy times she used to sing in other languages and sang great songs that got her many national and state awards .She also probably sang in other languages for less remuneration . Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu missed the opportunity due to being too judgemental and not taking up chances just for the love of it .

Today there are so many singers due to social media. Films have very less songs.
But in 90's ,there were few singers and lot of songs were made.
Singing 28 songs in 1 day is not a criteria to judge a singer. Mohammed Rafi never sung 28 songs in 1 day still he was a legend.
Arijit has now sung more than 900 songs ,not 400. He is most versatile singer who can sing all types of songs in his most unique soulful voice. Monotonous nasal overrated copycat Kumar Sanu can only sing simple same type flat romantic songs and copy Kishore Kumar. Mere dholna, binte dil, muskurahat, aayat, channa mereya, kalank, phir le aaya dil, babul mora - Kumar Sanu will need to take infinite births to sing these songs. Kumar Sanu became flop after 1997. But Arijit is ruling since 2011 and still superhit now in 2023.
So don't compare monotonous nasal Kumar Sanu with legendary versatile soulful Arijit.@@rockyhossain7907
As a hard core ARR fan, I regret watching the interview of a singer who turned down ARR that too for such a TIME-less album. It's indeed unfortunate that her interview is covered first among the singers just coz she's from the North side or Bollywood,whatever, when there are many greats n veterans like Chitra, SPB, Yesudas, Janaki, Susheela who sang so much for him. In fact, Chitra sang max. no. of songs for Arr but still there's no mention of her anywhere in this series. This is not really in good spirit for the music lovers to digest as it shows the prejudice for the already prejudiced North Indian singers. The govt. anyway does this all the time as it awards the prestigious padmas to North Indians over South Indians. (With the exception of only Rahman).
However, by refusing Roja for whatever reasons she told, Alka had done a world of good to the music world as she and Mr. Sanu would have proven disastrous for that strong n unique melodies of Roja. Infact, for the Hindi version of Roja despite the Southern singers rendering it, it went on to become a huge hit album even in the North which in a way was quite a blow to these singers for refusing it. But Alka was still lucky anyway unlike Sanu as she got to record some of her career best melodies for Arr. But as one can see it, it's definitely not a loss for Roja as it is for Alka. Period.

But these ppl. are already have a lot of prejudice against South at that time. I think it's only after ARR marked such victories that this North South prejudice has come down to great extent in movies. Today, the trend of pan India movies and what Modiji recently gone all praises about Telugu cinema shows things have come a long way!

One thing I don't understand about all of this is, why did she need kumar sanu's approval to sing for AR Rahman? She can make her own decisions. I am huge Kumar Sanu fan but I think he hurt AR Rahman by not singing for him. Alka on the other hand has done wonders for Rahman. Legendary combination

Hmmm that's why they say 'aise karni vaise bharni'. They both must be heavily regretting their decisions esp. after it became a huge hit and Rahman even got a national award for his game changer debut songs!
She did not say she was asking for Kumar's approval...they were friends/knew each other as they had sung number of songs together...so she just rang him as a friend to discuss what he was planning to do (Rehman was new so they were not sure) as apparently he was also invited to sing the songs...you know like how we discuss 'i got invited for xyz birthday, did you get an invite? Will you be going?.

What Alka Yagnik ji uttered resembles how AR Rahman can tailor voice of a singer and orchestration can produce great tracks with his immense talent.
Those can live for ever in ears of music lovers.
I see AR Rahman as true leader. He grows and make others grow. He appreciates others, welcomes new talent, explores new genre. Finally he implements.
I remember one of great music director Koit ji once told in an interview that people started buying original cassettes / cds because they want to have the true quality of music and it is because of AR RAHMAN.
I my self test any entertainment product with "Dil se re" song before buying to do a quality check.
Its an honour to follow people like ar rahman sir and learn many things. It will be great success in our life if we also implement humble things. At least one.

Someone's loss is someone's gain...Alka refused Chitraji gained...Roja was defiantly not Kumar sanu's genre...Though Alka explained in simple manner, but the attitude(then) not acceptable. There was a thought/differentiation "Madrasi"(south indian) then & now as well...But still saying she doesn't like all songs of ARR, only some songs she likes which she doesn't remember & songs which she had sung...But Alka considers this ‘the biggest mistake of her career' that made my mind...

SPB and Chitra were way more busier down south recording in atleast 2-3 languages for every album. Didn't they have the time to sing for Tamil, Telugu and Hindi songs? It's just her and Sami's ignorance and a bit arrogance that they refused to sing for Arr here. It's definitely not to mean offense if anyone says they did the best thing refusing the album as the right singers got the chance to do the honors for his timeless gem 💎 of Roja melodies!
Alka is always full of herself. She has forgotten that she became number 1 by luck. In 1990, 91 and 92, Anuradha Paudwal was at the top and she was getting all the top songs. Then all of a sudden she decided to leave films n do bhajans only. Thats where Alka zoomed ahead. All 90s ppl would know this.
btw Roja songs were also dubbed in marathi for release.Jagdish khebudkar had done the lyrics. The songs sound good in marathi .Suresh wadkar had sung marathi ye hansi wadiyan.

It's even harder to believe he felt bad when they refused to sing for him when he discovered new gems for himself in that album. Also, there are other great established singers who anyway sang for him. So, he should have felt happy ultimately that all this drama happened for the best voices to come for that album.

Alka was honest in not mincing words and repenting for her mistake of not taking Rahman's invitation to sing for him serious. That's nice of her! But, If she had to decline because she was busy, there should be no regret! She had her fair share of singing for Rahman later which should suffice. Lesson Learnt: Never look down on anyone because we don't know them and always weigh ourself with feet on the ground!😊

Ahh what a loss for Alka and music industry...Alka had such a good voice back in those days...clear and sweet like honey....it's nice that she admits regretting the decision but it was understandable Rehman was new so of course she was gonna give that much importance to him out her busy schedule...I guess she would have done it if she did not already have so many recordings....I wish Alka was part of roja....chitra sang beautifully but Alka would have been great....not sure about how Kumar sanu would have sounded...sbp was ok but not sure about Kumar maybe bad or maybe good.

Would have ruined the newness that others brought to the music. 3:36 was so cute of ARR saying "you did not sing my Roja songs". Great that Alka then came to work on some of ARR's greatest songs, especially Taal Se Taal, O Re Chori, Ramta Jogi, among others. 5:37 this is one of the most insightful recollections in his working style. I personally never knew he could put together lines form different sessions and even words together to create his desired version.

Setback for my respect for Rahman! Wow he considered speakers of other languages for his debut movie. Anyway, that movie had plans for gems like Minmini to emerge. No disrespect to Alka Yagnik or Kumar Sanu, we love them as well.

Yes, in Hindi version too Minimini sang which worked wonders for that song and the entire career of ARR. It's no wonder he's sometimes fondly remembered as Roja-Rahman and this song was the most magical part for getting him that fame. Alka must be doing great for herself then but for this movie and esp. for this song she clearly won't fit the bill. God 🙏 is just great that they rejected this album!

Let's get this one thing straight. To those triggered and are trying to imply that Alka Yagnik showed 'arrogance' by refusing Rahman, let's start with the fact that before that time, Alka mam was NEVER called for any musical venture from South of India. Her core audience was always the North, East and Central Indian states who enjoyed Hindi music. Plus, it was the year 1992, and Alka Ji then was just BEGINNING to get hit songs herself, she was NOT a fully established singer then (she only had 1 or 2 hit songs before that year)! So her decision to refuse Rahman was not arrogance, but more of practicality, because she had to first build her core audience, and only then could she venture outside.
From South you can easily see Chithra mam as an example of the same. She didn't straightaway start accepting offers from any language. She initially only built her audience base in Malayalam, her mother tongue. THEN she moved to Tamil, Kannada and Telugu......Hindi came even later than those languages! I am sure if Chithramma was randomly called by an unknown North Indian composer back in 1980s only, she would refuse as well. It's OKAY to refuse work from people you don't know, it's not about arrogance but about practical decision making. It is nothing but Alka Ji's humility that she calls it a 'mistake' today, but honestly, any singer in her place would have probably done the same back then.

@@rishabhrox1 ROJA was a Tamil film so obiviously the songs had to be in Tamil. Hindi was dubbed later and Alka ji had done one malayalam song in 1987 before so yes she had offers from South. I am sure she wasn't being considered for original Tamil version but the dubbed version. Inspite of being a National Award in 1992 for the very first time she still refuses to do Taal which came in 1999. Rahman had already done Rangeela and Maa Tujhe Salaam which in 1997 were massive hits in both Hindi regions and others by the time. Definitely no one is calling her decisions arrogant in nature but certainly ignorant and ofcourse she was busy and had personal reasons. On the other hand we have Shreya Ghosal who is chosen by Illaiyaraja in 2002 itself when Devdas came

She stated herself in an interview that the day she got the call from Subhash Ghai for this soundtrack, she had come back home after a hefty schedule and was too tired to think straight. She was asked to leave for Chennai from Mumbai the same night (or the next morning, something like that). Please be humane here. Alka Ji is not a robot, nor is any other singer. Ultimately she did accept when Subhash Ghai coerced her, but let's not go overboard with our love for Rahman that we forget that his songs are HARD. She is not ignorant even, she is just a human.
Roja's refusal and Taal's refusal are completely different in reasoning. Just because Rahman won a national award doesn't mean Alka Ji is ENTITLED to forget her health, her body and her voice and blindly go thousands of kilometers to Chennai to record.
In fact, even for South singers this concept is allowed. If Chithra Ji says she is sick, then no matter who the music director is, even if RD Burman takes another avatar on Earth and asks her to sing, she has all rights to refuse. Health and voice comes first, national awards, grammy's...none of these matter then.

Her mom coaxed her and even she understood the significance of Rahman which was established by that time as mentioned in my previous comment. U decide if a hefty schedule would stop any artist when she herself calls her refusal to Roja her biggest regret in her career? Nobody is so great a singer that you land at the studio and start recording she was given time to do her homework. As for Rahman song's being HARD even Lata ji took three days prior to Lukka Chuppi so you get the required time and then she records for 8 hrs straight without sitting down. A National Award does not allows one to get entitlement rather it gives the awardee credibility and recognition and ulimately respect within the artist's circles and love from the listeners and the layperson

Stars make such mistakes which creates new superstars .. Not that Chitra wasn't a star but people across the country came to know about her with Roja. but its Alka's humility to accept that she made a wrong call that is appreciable... Chitra chechi already had 3 national awards and close to 12 state awards across three regional languages when Roja was being convinced.

I have been following the series as I have been following ARRs work even before Roja when he released his Islamic devotional songs without realising who the composer is. Only after Roja got released, then realised that it was composed by ARR. So the info you are sharing makes me revisit every album I have been following. Thanks for the work.
It may be good in Hindi but if you listen to the original song in Tamil/Telugu sung by Chitra and late Balu sir, you will be blown away for their sheer magic and soul they put in their singing for that song. The Hindi version doesn't match that purity at all. In a way, Arr reduced himself to the callibre of Anu Malik or Nadeem-Shravan to make his song sound like a Hindi one and match their voices.
A few comments with respect to 'redeem'ing is not in good taste. Kuman Sanu and Alka Yagnik had brands of their own. The legendary Suchitra Sen is alleged to have turned down Satyajit Ray but that has not affected her in any way and she does not need redemption.
Compared to Alkaji, Shreyaji is very down to earth. She keeps music composition at first place and it doesnt matter whether it is in Tamil, Bengali, Telugu or Hindi. To Hindi music lovers, just listen to some amazing semi classical songs of her in Tamil and Malayalm

Actually it was a big loss for Alka Yagnik as she was not approached by Rahman until Taal, She could have sung Roja, Bombay, Dil Se.., Rangeela, Daud etc.

Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu not singing for ARR doesn't bring even a slight difference on their singing career as they were already legends when ARR even stepped into the industry.
