      Well just get a heatsink for a AMD threatripper, its actually pretty much the same size and they r only around 50-150 bucks, i mean they only rated for 200W CPUs but im pretty sure a LED has a way different efficiency, so it wont even give off that much heat as a CPU does

      I think a lot of it is due to the EXTREME variety of specifications and operating characteristics of not just different brands and makes but also different bins of same name leds, the cheap leds are so annoying once you’ve actually analyzed them and compared them to better performing leds. Plus it’s fascinating just how much light we can produce with such little electricity compared to incandescent bulbs people used for a long time.

    • @bobhope5773
      @bobhope5773 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Katana666D Nope the temperature that is in question is the "Kelvin" of the light, which is 3200 Kelvin.
      Many 100W COB grow lights are at 3500 Kelvin and do a great job, at producing you daily greens.
      As for the heat from the unit, that is dissipated by the heat sink and internal fan and the residual heat in the grow space is removed by an extractor fan, as it is with all grow setups.
      Efficiency wasn't talked about but when you increase the brightness of the COB up to the max 440W shown in the video, the less efficient the light to heat ratio is. The more power you pump into a COB LED, the greater the percentage of that input power, is turned into heat and so making the COB LED's light output less efficient.
      500W is nothing new for single COBs but one this small is amazing and it is really quite an achievement to produce one at this size but the heatsink is still huge and noisey.
      For a few years now it has been possible to buy a 2400W COB but the chip is huge and so too is the heatsink.
      2400W COB can be found at Flip Chip Opto - fcopto.com/products/ along with a load of other large sized LED COB lights for general lighting, grow lighting and broadcast lighting.
      Remember if you have never grown under COB LED or you know nothing about Kelvin scale, probably best not to say "it is not suitable temp".
      If you think the unit is too hot to be in a grow space, just remember COB LEDs are more energy efficient than HID Bulbs, which is to say, if you can grow under 600w HPS then the heat given out by a 500W COB LED will definitely be cooler because a COB LED it is more energy efficient than an HPS & so gives our less heat and it also use 100W less power draw than a 600W HPS.
      Many growers use 600W HPS (old skool growers & commercial grows, although this is changing and more efficient lights are being used more often now) and the growers deal with the heat from those lights, so why would a 500W LED COB light be too hot temperature wise???
      I would also advise those who don't know what they are talking about go have a look at Growmau5 and Migrow videos and learn a thing or three, before wading into waters too deep for them to keep their head above water!

      The Imalent one uses 8 CREE XHP70 LEDs right? Total power for that would be 230w max. Insane for sure, amazing indeed, but it also enters termal protection at 50°c exactly because the body itself is a heatsink.
      You would not be able to hold a 500w heat source in your hands for much long, it would sure need a heatsink with fan, maybe not as extreme as shown (and working with PC cooling, I would say, YES it needs it).

      If you are a DIY kind of person, (which if you watch this channel I assume you are. You should buy the LED without the heatsink, and swap it out for a large PC air cooler, or maybe water cooler. although the really good quality PC air coolers have similar performance to water coolers while also being quieter because they don't need a water pump. I would put a Be quiet! darkrock pro 3 on it, First off because it would look bad ass, but second because it's dead quiet and should provide equal performance to the "stock" cooler.

Grid pattern, about 3 square inches between, and 30 feet above the ground. Not sure if there were any kind of optics (shades, reflectors, lenses, etc) but they looked bare, definitely no diffusion. Maybe you should cover your ceiling in LEDs!!!

      This is an interesting approach, however it is good only when there is a need to create space universally lit by the "sunlight" (just like in a sunny day outside). Very good for the photo shooting when there is a need to mimic the daylight in an open space.
      Inside the confined space like a living room, however, i wouldn't consider this as a good approach. Having single 500W it would be much better to create a "sun rays coming though the window' illusion, which lights only the space where the rays fall, and the rest of space is lit by the ambient lighting. You can play with the rayleigh scattering and optics to create an "window with a sunny sky behind it" casting a single, yet powerful ray with no diffusion. Just like in a sunny day inside the house.

    Just one problem if you're going to mimic a sun with it; This outputs 5600K light, although direct sunlight is warmer than that. What you need is the 3200K version of this for direct sunlight, then a 5600K version that fires up into the roof and diffuses down as skylight.
    Skylight is the blue sky itself that is diffused and scattered everywhere, while sunlight is the warm direct light from the sun, coming from one direction. Combined these will create a realistic effect. Take a look at this video that explains a bit more th-cam.com/video/aJ4TJ4-kkDw/w-d-xo.html

    This seems like the kinda thing that well look back on and laugh at how primitive we were cause theyll only cost like $.30 in the future, like how we do now when looking at those giant old computers that fill an entire room and can only do basic math.

      Build a machine that can mechanically compute latitude and logitude based on speed and trajectory. That is small enough to fit on a plane or submarine then say it's primitive.

    Can it be pulsed at 100A~200A fast enough to be used as a photo flash?
    The idea would be to make a flash that you can use for night time high-power zoom photography.
    One would need to use lenses to focus the light at a distance (say 100m) and be able to adjust the size of the beam.
    operate it at 12A for beam adjustment, then 100-200A for a flash, taking a picture in full color.
    I know, its a dumb idea, but I am full of dumb ideas.

      toysareforboys That depends on the diode's, and power supply's, operating frequency. Lights built for high speed work have electronic ballasts that control sine wave of the power delivery resulting in a flicker free image. Without this ballast every multiple of the hertz frequency would cause a dim frame. Shooting at 60fps with a standard incandescent bulb on 60 hertz house power results in a dim frame every 10th frame.

    3:43 To convey brightness, I think it might be good to try it as a fill light when you have direct noonday sun above you. That has been what I have been looking for when I see reviews for lights such as the Aputure 120D II and 300D, just to see how bright it is. If you ever get your hands on those two lights, I would love to know how your lights (the gooseneck and this light) compares to them.

    The LED with 5600Kelvin has between 20.000 and 24.000 Lumen. At 12A and 35V - 39V (420W - 468W) this are only between ~42,7 and ~57,1 Lumen per Watt.

    Sorry to disappoint you, but this LED only has about 22000 lumens, or roughly 50 lumens per watt. So it's extremely inefficient, even when considering the CRI of 95. For comparsion: The Cree CXB3590 with CRI 92 provides 13237 lumens at 86 watts, equalling to 153 lumens per watt.
    And they cost only 30 €. By mounting two CXB3590 on a CPU cooler, one can make a light which is brighter, cheaper, smaller, less noisy and less power consuming than this 500 watt LED module.

    • @forrestfuller9942
      @forrestfuller9942 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's not too efficient. Plus it pulls 12 amps. Damn that's alot for just 500 watts. I can run 6 citizen cobs off a meanwell hlg 240 and get over 20k lumens with a little more than 2 amps and 250 watts. 70 for the driver and 8 dollars for each cob plus the heat sink. Way cheaper than 500
