hi Chris, i found this interesting touch display with integrated esp32 , M5Stack is the name of it. maybe you can do a project using this with WLED, so everyone could control his leds without smartphone, directly from small M5Stack in every room. it has also voice control and wifi. would be great if you make a cool project with it.
@6:25.... What's a "nyangglow"?
no longer available :(
@ChrisMaherDIY
So I need to buy this setup immediately. Just had my steps installed today and I didn’t even know what cables to run so I ran a single 14ga power cable to the top step and cat6 (23ga) cables for each step.
I read below that this is like a WS2811 with 3 copper leads on the LED. But then I read that the ws2815 300led are better? But it has 3 wire connections on the led strip.
Can someone please guide me in the right direction. I need to know if I can get the “better” wg2815 from Amazon and if there are any other better ESP32 out there. I also started seeing posts about Quinled. I am now completely lost!!!!!
Best youtube channel for homemade led projects!
hands down. Chris goes to the point and has great ideas.
@@nfernandoterana919 I'm planning to copy some of his ideas for myself.
Thanks so much!! Appreciate the support my friend!!
Thanks so much buddy!
Couldn't agree more! He's been my go-to guy for anything LED related.
3:30 Screw terminal connections can become loose over time, even if the wires don't move or are mechanically unloaded. To eliminate this possibility, crimp bootlace ferrules to the wires. Don't tin the wires with solder, that can loosen over time (the solder cold flows under pressure) and it can introduce a weak spot inside the insulation.
If you get some Quinled controller, you can feed your esp from 12V, no need for separate voltage supply for your board. You also get fuse and reverse polarity protection for safety. And level shifter on your data pins
Awesome heads up Chris! Thanks! 😉
I would like to do something like this in my garage.
Love the Step by step walk through Chris does.👍
This is the exact video I needed! Thanks!!
Thank you Chris.
I followed everything you said. It worked...i even added a mic..THANK YOUUUU!!!
👊👊👊
Awesome! Glad it worked!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
@ChrisMaherDIY , this channel is GOLD. The fast pace is perfect, great camera work and sound quality, intuitive instructions.
A question for Chris (or anyone): I am planning to cut a Muzata strip in half to use in 2 8ft tube lights (WLED/esp32), each powered by it's own power supply.
1. Each uncut strip is 60 watts. So I would guess each half is 30watts?
2. The power supply shown in the video is 12v/3amp. Isn't this underpowered, at 36 watts? would a 12v/5amp be more appropriate?
3. Since I am running half strips, presumed to be 30 watts each, do I still need the 12v/3A/36w power supply or can I go smaller like a 12v/2a?)
thx for any answers or ideas!
Amazing! Thank you!
Bought these LEDS. They actually came in a waterproof jacket making it harder to mount with just take. But pretty cool that it came with waterproofing.
I know what channel I should reference back to when I start my project , saved !
Your channel is blowing up! good work man
another great video, cool strip for the price point and number of LED per foot. Keep the light on my friend and keep going always look foward to your videos :)
Thanks for amazing videos! Learning a lot recently , Possible maybe to do like 1/2 year summary video's of products you love and ones to avoid? just an idea.
Adapter life will be short lived.
Looks Awesome.❤
Been using these for a while, they work great for making an animated Christmas tree that displays animations with xLights.
Thanks fir tor the info
First off your the guy who got me to raise an eyebrow to all this LED lighting stuff while I was searching for PC desk ideas. Thanks! Now I'm always thinking of ways to use it everything. My question is; Is it possible to utilize a single WLED data line for a GPIO pin , directing it to a level shifter, and subsequently daisy-chain the data line on the low side, ensuring the synchronized output of data on the 5-volt side for multiple LED strips? Just a thought I had. I really like your videos they have helped me learn a lot. Any feed back would awesome.
Chris, how the hell do you up the anti with each video ? 😂🎉. Your creations are just so out of this world.
Great idea's
imagination limtless
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the video these lights look great. But I was wondering if I can possibly rig them up to fit a 42’ space? If not can you suggest a set of multicolor lights that can please. I was going to use a 10 meter Govee and connect it to a 3 meter Govee but I was told it wouldn’t work.
You’re the man.
Mike
You're definitely my led guy! 👊
THAT. Looks Swawesome!
I need to figure out how I can run 60ft for my entire small theater room ceiling and these looked great. I’m new to this so figuring out a power supply for the LED’s and how much I’d need is a question I need to get an answer for so it will help me from getting super frustrated and will allow the LED’s to perform without falling out.
Great channel and I love the content, you’ve inspired me to do this in my house because you lay it out an make it feel like it’s much easier than I first thought it would be. Thanks! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
The led strip lights come with controller but it can only controll 32.8ft the longgest. I would recommend you use esp32 to controll the lights. Every 3.3ft cost 12W power , maybe you need two 12v10A power would be great
What would you suggest for this type of setup with HomeKit control?
really awesome, would love to know if you could put this in a car for underglow or some interior accent lighting.
Hi love this setup can be I inject 12 volt to the second roll? Lemme know thanks
I get 60/m ws2812b ip65 and ip67 for $10-11 in a 5 meter roll. this is only 1.5 times that density for 3 times the price and with a third of the controllability. It is cheaper and easier to power though with the 12volts. 144/m ws2812b in 1 meter strips is $6-7. that's $30-35 for a 5 meter run. that yields 1.5 times this density and 3 times the addressability. That's a lot to power though. Thanks for a different perspective on things. Your videos are always enjoyable and you are very thorough. Thanks for all the hard work. I'm staying 5 volt and doing cob strips. Keeps getting cheaper.
Where do you get your strips from?
Simply ‘wow’
Hi Chris, I hope you are well mate,
These remind me of the TM1812 LED strips I started out with, they were amongst the first to be digitally addressable, like these they were 3 LEDs per pixel and 12v, but they were full 5050 SMD LEDs from memory,
Great find though, thanks as always for the video.
Thanks as always for watching buddy! Thanks for the information and always good hearing from you!
@@ChrisMaherDIYI love your videos they're so inspirational and I'm looking forward to buy the L-Shaped Desk from Fezibo and was wondering what the Size of your Desk is. Is it the 160cm or the 200cm version?
@@Kaeynbrmn tha ks so much for watching and glad you are enjoying the videos! I went with the one that says 65" by 48" on the website. It's the middle size one. Hope that helps!
@@ChrisMaherDIY first of all, thank you very much for answering that quick. Do you think two 27" monitors, a very similar pc case like you have and keyboard&mouse fit on the 65" by 48" desk or would it be to tight?
Looks like the ESP32 comes in a Type C now!
I'm just now starting this project for my stairs. Does the type c board change the pin connections at all that you know of? I am in purchasing stage of the project.
Thanks for this video; I went ahead and bought a roll of this Muzata LED strip and am looking forward to running it with WLED. I have a few questions, though. I can see on the WLED app that there's a field where you enter your power supply voltage and max voltage. Those appear to be set to 5V on the app but you're using a 12V supply. How should those fields be set? Also, in other demos, I've seen that person using a logic level shifter to bump up the voltage of the data signal. You're not doing that here. I assume it's working for you because you have a fairly short distance between the microcontroller and the strip?
Can this type setup be used for outdoor underneath a deck railing?......completely waterproof?
complete noob to led lights here, and I want to do things properly! I need to hook up 3 strips together, what kind of power supply would I need ? I found a 12v 5A supply on amazon, would that be OK (and safe?) to use? thanks. What would be the other options? Could I buy 2 of those small power supplies and power the strip at both ends ? Thanks!
Hey great video! I have a question that isn’t related to this video but I will ask it anyways.
I want to line my room with led strips which is around 55 feet total. I wanted to buy the Govee LED Strip Light M1 for the room, but I would need 4 of their strips. I know that I can connect two of the strips together like you shared earlier on your channel, but would I be able to connect 4? Or should I only connect 2 and have 2 separate strips with separate power supplies that govee provides?
Awesome Video Awesome led light strip
What would be the best led strip series (addressable of course) to use to go around an entire bedroom (for my kids rooms, I think the run would be between 60-70 foot)? I'm thinking of ordering the esp32 setups, but there are SOOOO many choices of led strips! 30 per meter would be fine, just looking for something addressable that won't break the bank, but also won't draw a lot of current, as I am sure my kids will probably leave them on quite often! (kids hate to turn lights off lol) Thanks!!
Thanks Chris. I just bought 10 through your Channel 😄
You are stocking up!! Lol thats awesome. Thanks so much for the support. You planning on hooking them up to WLED?!
Yes, I’m going to hook up with WLED. It’s good that this LED light just came in time because I’m remodeling my house. I’m planning to put them under the counter cabinets & ceiling soffits. I also want to do some of the fun projects you did in your videos.
Question: how many 5 meter LED strips can one ESP32 support?
Follow up question.
I would like to wire up some led lights in such a way that I have a main power bus line and then branches of LED lights (picture a tree if you will). If I remove a branch of LED, the others should remain lit. If I am using a total of 5 meters of LEDs lights (the ones you used in this video actually), would I need a different power source or is what you demonstrated enough?
looking for a led strip lighting that i can use on a flight of stairs. Each tread is 35 inches long and there are 15 treads. The tread overhangs the riser by 1 1/4 inches....so i could dado in the aluminum channels.
Having the lights go on when someone uses the stairs would be good too.
Being able to do different light colors and patterns is cool.
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Roger
Hi Chris, learned a lot from you lately. i have some ws2812B led which only has 3 wires data, gnd and vin. connected to a small Bluetooth controller which has motion and sound sensor and the other end of this small controller connecting to a usb plug for power. Do you think it is possible to connect this to esp32 and keeps the motion and sound functions? Also i would love to only use power from the esp32 with phone charger.....it is enough for my setup if possible
Hi so question a bit unrelated have the LED's hooked up in sink with the TV ( forgot name ) is it best to have a white background Wall or darker background wall. I'm building new house was thinking of making that wall behind tv a feature wall IE darker but if whiter colour is better I'll leave as is. Thx
Great video as always! What would you power this with if you used 3 strips of lights?
Do I need higher than 3amp power source to run more than 2 strips. Like using 3 or 4 strips together?
Could you recommend a second best for price/value? I am using WLED to control them, the Muzata just aren’t coming back in stock.
can we use theses LED strips with the mic you used in one of you videos since you were using a 5v power supply?
Great job
In your newer video you’re using Aqara. Which one is better?
Tip, if you have voltage drop at the end of led then to the other end just add same 12v wire and all sorted so the voltage supply will be on both sides from the same power supply.
super cool
Do you have a good led strip or cob strip for outdoors 32 ft long I will be hooking up with a esp32 ?
Dude! That's amazing! Thank you!
Side note: I recommend spending $10 on a metal cutting disc for your miter saw. You'll get cleaner cuts without sacrificing the blade.
Thanks so much for watching and the recommendation! Thats good to know and always love to hear from experts on better ways of doing things! Appreciate it!
@@ChrisMaherDIY requires some filing with a small file to smooth the edges, but I suspect you have to do that with the blade designed for wood anyhow. 🙂
If you have a wood blade with carbide teeth, it will cut aluminum just fine.
Toothed blades are perfect for aluminum. Even blades designed for wood cut this stuff great with super clean cuts.
To be clear... I didn't say a wood blade would not work. I said a metal cutting disc is better. Rather than sacrifice my $60 wood blades (sharpening them is a pain in the ...), I'll sacrifice a cheap disc that's designed for the task.
I have a question I bought some BTF 50/50 RGBW light strips to put in a bathroom it came with 5 wires connector,,, how do I connect it to ESP 32,,, thank you in advance
Thank you Chris. Can you do a video explaining WLED segments and how to use more than one data (GPIO) pin? Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I kinda go into this in this video: th-cam.com/video/xkCt85jvI2s/w-d-xo.html but hopefully down the road I can do something that goes into a little more detail. Thanks!!
@@ChrisMaherDIYSurely will check this. Thanks a lot 🙏🏼.
I would like some Leds that are plug and play but will not show hot spots in my diffusers. Can you recommend? The Muzata links says not available.
Great stuff! I have to try that controller and WLED (I’m a LIFX guy and they’ve stepped up their scenes recently). QUESTION- Does WLED app allow music synch through phone?
WLED has a sound reactive mode and the ESP controlling the strip needs to have a mic of sorts. The mic will pick up ambient noise in addition to the music but I have no practical experience with this setup
Love the channel. Anyone know what song is playing during Final Thoughts? Song is sooo dope
Is there a way to create your own animations and is there a way to connect it to a device that would make it beat sync animations??
I love the videos - even though I usually end up disappointed. Living in Europe, theres just no way to get anything remotely similar to this in our scrappy versions of amazon.
Same here in Sweden, good led strips tends to get exspensive. I was thinking of a stage design, but the cost was high.
AliExpress?
Any help to how to make ceiling light with these? I am looking for high CRI light that would be like a big circle in the roof.

Trying to make something like that to ceiling. With diameter of 1.5m (5feet) Then hang soft box canvas over it to soften it up.
Double-check your model, but I am fairly certain most ESP devices can take up to 12V.
Any plans to hide the wire connection on the right? If so, how?
Can you do a wLED ambient set up for 120inch projector screen pretty please 🙏 I haven't found those content yet but I know it can be done
Those are 97led /m according to the Amazon listing. Those are also wa2811 instead of ws2812b so they are three pixels wide for each color. And btf lighting sells 5m strips that are. 100 led/m for $22 and btf is the best quality I've used in all my projects over the years. The ws2811 is awesome.
Thanks for watching! I use btf in almost everything as well! Although I've never seen 5 meters of 100 LEDs per meter for 22 dollars. Where are you seeing this?!
Do you know how many lumens per meter it has and if it’s compatible with HomeKit?
Great review. Too bad this is not available in Australia 😮
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
We easily get this in India, and is widely used in bars/clubs.
These are known as WS2811 Pixel Led Strip,
60 Leds per meter, 5 meters roll, 100 IC's are like 12 USD a roll. Low quality are cheaper but those fail very very soon.
96 Leds per meter would be a little expensive though.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Thanks for the information! Love from the US!
hi bro, i am also from india, zara bata bhai konsi led lu or wled setup kese install karu please bata de
Great vid! Love your videos but I wish all these products youre sharing would be available on the European Amazon :-(
Thanks for watching and yeah that would be very nice. It is surprising that unless it's a major global brand, how the products offered on Amazon in the US are not available in other markets. Even Amazon US and Amazon Canada are vastly different.
Nice! Do you know if these LED strips have dedicated white LED's for kitchen under mounts?
They do not have a dedicated white. It would be nice if they did but would more than likely drive the cost up quite a bit!
Hey Chris, looking to see of there's a way to use wled in an automotive option - maybe go with a 12v strip of leds? Would lilove to pickvyour brain about this
Chris love the vids . sucks that in less than 16 that you posted this the leds are no longer available
Far out, dude. Fantastical! Trippy. We are the light.
Awesome video
@Chris Maher - is there a way to get this same idea to work but on a different scale like staircases? Like being able to control them with motion sensors? Imagine motion sensors create a different effect depending on someone walking down vs up a set of stairs?! Imagine being able to set a motion sensor on every single step if needed and make it work to only stay lit for a few seconds as needed?!!!
Would require a bit more work to do custom wiring, But you can setup home assistant and setup the wled plugin to control the individual led strips on the stairs. You can use one strip with custom segments in WLED. Then you can setup motion sensors on the top and bottom of the stairs. Then you can setup a custom automation in home assistant to control the animation for the stairs. This will require a bit of programming but chat gpt is pretty useful for home assistant automations but you will probably need to make a few manual fixes to what it outputs. You will need motion sensors that can work with home assistant though.
@@1001hey1001 The problem I am having now is how do I connect each strip together from each step? And if I have to connect wires directly from the end of one strip to the end of the next step, do I have to run those wires to the very beginning of the next step or just to the closest point (left or right side as I go down to the next step)?
WS2812 and WS2813 are amazing. The WS2813 even has another pin for redundancy, should one connection break, the other will take it's place
Ws2815 is even better because its a 12v version of 2813 so less power injection points
Hi. Great video - I'm getting closer to diving into WLED thanks to you 🙂
A quick heads-up though - Here in the UK, the Amazon links don't appear to open the strips you use in this video - just a warning to anyone who gets too click-happy and ends up buying something unexpected.
yup almost just got me...
Do it. I recently completed a project with 720 LEDs recessed in my outdoor deck and controlled via WLED. In addition I can access the strip via DMX as.part of a bigger lighting installation!
Damn I fell for it, I sent the lights back, does anyone know how I get these in the uk?
muzata channels prices have went bonkers tbh and not all their channels are even available in Canada. I would like to see more projects done with cob led strips especially for accent only projects, I feel they are really getting interesting these cob strips especially since I think you can stick then in any cheaper channels.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yeah COB addressable strips are for sure something I'll be taking a deeper dive here in the near future. Love the tech and 100% agree that it will open up tons of options for different diffuser channels!
I am also very interested in addressable COBs. Some new ones are popping out but not sure what to go for, idk if they would be bright enough as the ones I´ve seen don´t have much of that info
What did you do to hide the wires @ 7:20?
I have an issue finding a esp32 with a VIN pin, i could need some help since aliexpress doesn't ship to austria
Would these be suitable
For Sauna use?
How would you go about using these as primary lighting? Looking at using them under the back patio with an on/off switch for the white LED's for normal lighting, then have the RGB's for parties.
Don't use RGB leds for primary lighting - they produce horrible white light. If you want both color and white, buy color and white strips - they're not very expensive. Even "high cri" white strips aren't terribly expensive these days (if you buy them from the correct places - trust me, there are places that will rip you off bigtime). For RGB addressable 5M strips, you should be getting them for $15-$20, and for white, probably like $5-6 - high CRI white will be more like $20-30 but well worth it. None of this is "new" - all of these LED strips have been around for ages
Can wled be integrated with the Philips hue network/bridge
Thanks for a great review. Does this strip "remember" last setting on power loss and recovery?
That's for the controller to do. Not the strip
@@tRRickedOut It has a remote (amazon link) so controller should be there. The Govee's remember last setting on power loss. Was wondering if this one does too as some dont.
Two questions if you please. 1) isn’t a led strip that has rgb-w better if you also want to do warm white ? 2) what is Quin Led used for? Is it pure safety and if you need to please led lighting far away? What’s the added value???
You could go with SK6812’s if you want to achieve more accurate whites, I’m pretty sure they offer 5v and 12v variants.
That diffuser channel.. any idea on how to mount it on a couch (I got a U shaped sectional). I've been wanting to do "under glow" for my couch but trying to figure out the best way to do this. Thoughts?
probably screw the channels into the bottom of the couch, or as he did 3m strips or tape
Awesome price point and well done video! Though, If possible I have 2 questions.
1. Can I cut this LED strip as I'll be needing about 2.5 of them.
2. What power supply would you recommend for about 43ft (13M)
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yes, you can for sure cut this strip! I would probably start out with a 12v 6amp supply and do 1 power injection at the end and see how things look at different levels of brightness and then go from there!
@ChrisMaherDIY Awesome, I got a new weekend project now! Thanks for the help 👍🏾
How much did your dream gaming setup you made a month ago pls tell me
Is there some semi budget eu alternative? these guys unfortunately don’t ship over here to Germany

Have you ever looked at the BTF WS2811 12v? These also have 96led per meter and also around 30 euros.
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah I love BTF lights! We do have those but they are much more expensive here. Great quality product thought!
It can be used with led rgb ic?
Can I add the Wled control unit for rgb cct led strip as well?
Greg video Chris went on their website and bought 25-meter reels. Have a question though, Chris. For long runs do I have to do injection of both the 12-volt power and the signal? Or just a run of red and black wires for the 12-volt for even brightness?
No such thing as signal injection. Each led ic sort of boosts the signal. There may be problems when the cable run from the controller to the strip is long, and even for shorter ones when you use different controlling voltage. To overcome such problems if encountered, one needs a level shifter board. Sometimes a "sacrificial pixel" is used for sane purpose, easily Google able.
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul thanks
Im having problems with that power supply burning out, can anyone recommend a different power supply and/or explain why this would be happening?
The amperage rating of your supply does not matter for longer lengths of strips. The voltage drops happens due to the current draw, so even if it was a 12V 60A supply it wouldn't have made a difference. All that matters is the resistance, hence why voltage injection helps. If the strips consume what the supply can provide, but you inject voltage along the strips using wires which lower the overall resistance, you should'nt see any drop in brightness.
So if I connect 4 of this stripes (64ft) do I need a different power supply?
@@HomeCinemaSolutions01 You need a power supply that can supply enough amperage. If one strip uses a maximum of 4A you'd need a >16A supply. Something you have to keep in mind is how the current travels. If you connect them in one single length of strip (4 in a row), you'd likely see a dip in brightness towards the end of the strip if you only supply 12V at one point, even if your supply can deliver twice the required amount. The way to avoid this is to inject voltage, which basically means you take your 12V +/- of the supply and connect it multiple times down the length of your strip. You can probably find some guidelines on how often you need to do this and what gauge of wire you should use for what lengths and currents.
Pls what is the name of the led strip
Your WLED had different animations than what I have. Is there a pack that you downloaded to add more than the default ones?
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I just went to install.wled.me and installed the latest from their official site. I believe its beta version 0.14.0-b3 I definitely noticed a few more animations from the previous version so for sure worth updating!
Hey Chris, I loved your creativity and methods using RGB led strip in multiple ways, I just want to know how to run wled software remotely from anywhere using internet, can you please demonstrate?
People will often use a local VPN server setup to create a secure connection into the lan or you could use something like zerotier which I have had luck with in the past.
So what led strips are you exactly using? When I click the link I go to an Amazon page which displays several led strips, and the first one is from a brand "Diyife".
Are those the ones you are using in the video??
Thanks for watching! When I click on the link it takes me to the product In the video. I'm in the US. Where are you located? If it's not taking you to the correct product, my guess is it's not available in your region unfortunately.
Hello Chris, I have a question, I have the Govee DreamView T1 Pro TV and I want to add to the wall the M1 light strip but i need 2 of them of 2m to put them in each side of the bed, so can I cut one of 5m and do it 2 of 2m? I can do it, will them still work? Ty🙃
pd: by the way, because of you I can't stop buying led lights. 🤣😂
If you solder the end of one to the beginning of another, yes that works.
