- This is one hell of an MMO full of action, a varied amount of enemies, bosses, loot, and a lot of unique characteristics like a top down like view, is a shooter/bullet hell style looter game, has nice pixel art graphics, AND is a roguelike. The game’s original creator’s Alex Carobus and Rob Shillingsburg stated that the aim of the game was to “shake things up by breaking as many MMO ‘rules’ as we could”. Despite all of this, these factors can also be a pretty big detriment to the game too. So to understand all of this, the good and the bad, you need to know what makes up this imperfect gem of a game, Realm of the Mad God.

Instantly knew he subject from the thumbnail. RotMG is the worst thing that happened to me, and I legitimately had such an addiction problem I nearly failed out of college. Loot is awful, and it's just not getting what the community really needs. I don't want to relive my anguish from doing so many events to get nothing (one time ran over 100 dungeons during a loot event and got no white bags), so I won't watch this video, but I will say that the operators of this game won't change, it's just horrible. It's so fun until you look to get loot, then it's just the worst.

Playing for loot is a rookie mistake, but so is playing this addicting ass game
Like yeah it's fun learning how to play it and do high level content and stuff, but eventually there's little reward other than gaming the garbage markets and stuff. Going after rare endgame equipment is such a risk too, and losing a character right after getting one of those loots is devastating.

For context, the IP issue is by design to prevent an exploit called multiboxing. It's a really old technique where a player would control 10-20 characters at once, be unstoppable, and prevent everyone else from getting any loot

@@greyw0lv Nah it's actually to prevent muling, using a mule means that you have separate accounts to store loot on because you only start with 2 character slots and 2 vault chests so a total of 32 item slots (after getting enough fame to buy the 1x chest and 1x character otherwise 16) if you mule you get extra slots for free, but by them putting a strict ip ban on it you can't get extra free slots and have to pay them money for more. In a game where 300 slots isn't enough it's very predatory and that's without mentioning stat pot storage

As someone who’s played for over a decade and grew up playing this game, it’s truly amazing and wish it’s community could grow. So many amazing items and classes that you can easily play forever. And you truly feel rewarded for those white bags. It may seem like it takes a while but they aren’t as rare as people seem to think
Community can't grow cause deca the early game is Hella confusing for new players and getting endgame gear without discords is a massive grind will not touch realm until they nerf discords or give more free vault space, I much rather wait for beneath the nexus to release or darza to get its huge update then play realm rn also pets are a stupid fucking mechanic nerf them
I was so sad when they got rid of the original music. Even though it was just one constant song I think its better then all the new songs combined. It really set the mood of the game. It was fucking killer.

As a tester for the game, I've had the misfortune of seeing various designers let go that would have brought some seriously needed changes to the game's more core mechanics.
As an ex-tester once described it, Realm tries to be both a roguelike and a grindy MMORPG, which do not work together on a fundamental level - and it's understandable this wasn't immediately caught. It _was_ made for a game jam, after all.
But alas, we now answer to management who sees players as customers, and running constant events = constant revenue...
Toastrz had one Reddit post vaguely outlining the stat rework that was supposed to fix the gameplay loop, I want to know what the game could have been so bad.

I remember this game being so fun and frustrating , the first time I got to oryx castle and saw the amount of people fighting oryx was amazing, a bunch of pixels and graves everywhere 😂.
I used to play this a lot on browser , the exp train was amazing, we went following the dirt( or stone?) path that was all around the map and killed all that crossed our path to get to level 20 , it was so fun :( goddam nostalgia hits hard AF

Same, this just reminded me of summer 2013, i remember i was playing it and then went to the beach with my familly then couldnt wait to come back home to play it again, this is my childhood, me and my brother used to play it together all the time, i have so many memories and nostalgia connected with this game
as a rotmg player of several years and several 1000s of hours spent, this video was amazing, it covered all the great aspects and (most) of the bad aspects, but keeping the narrative positive throughout the video. the only thing you forgot in my opinion, is the annoying discord meta that comes with endgame dungeons due to their monotony and/or difficulty (probably since you haven't been doing too many), but besides that, I don't see how this video could have been better. thanks for shedding light on out community :)

Thank god for the health scaling rework it really shifted away from the discord meta. It’s still an issue and I hate how discords will be so particular if you want to join them, but that is to health scaling if get a couple decent players together any dungeon is doable. My favorite times where when me and my friends would pop endgame dungeons on the left bridge on nexus and help newer players that still have to rely on discords get a better grasp of the dungeon. Left Bridge Gang For Life!

I am only 14 but I have been playing this game since I was 4. This game has been a massive part of my life and no matter what I have been through Realm has always been there for me. I have taken a few long breaks from the game but it always somehow draws me back in after a few months to a year. The rush of getting a white bag is insane, the dopamine a long time player of this game receives from seeing those few pixels is crazy. There is no other game that can cause me to get that excited, I think that’s why people get drawn in to the game after not playing for years even. This game is insane and there is no game like it out at the moment, and I am so glad that the community is growing.

RotMG really boils down to your play style making it bearable or not for grinding, as well as DECA needing to address the problems which the community have already found for them. It’s not that pay to win besides getting a few character slots and vault space, but is absolutely discord-reliant for playing with others

Rotmg is a rotten addiction machine. Quitting this game might have been the best choice I ever made. I was spending hours on end grinding on ridiculous events.
Honestly I figured the items on the ground were there for decoration at this point because I didn’t believe there were people reckless enough to spend actual money on easy to get gear you can die with. I like it as opposed to a shop menu, but the purchases themselves are stupid. I like the open layout, but haven’t once felt the need to spend money on gear or skins
I don't remember exactly when I played this game, I think it was 2016. At that time I was also looking for free games on the internet to play and I ended up coming across this game. I remember that I found it very difficult at the time, that's why I didn't play that much, but after watching this video it made me want to play again. great video. love your channel.

Like everyone else has said, great video! RotMG is a pretty polarizing game, but having any eyes drawn to it is always going to be helpful for the longevity of it.

Bro I just got a couple of my friends to give the game a try. We hopped in discord and dicked around for a few hours and it was one of the most fun times I've had playing realm in a very long time.

Great video! Couldn't agree more on certain topics in the video as a veteran of the game. Some things like the skins loot boxes etc. Are just things you get numb to when you have played the game for as long as some people have. It's just that new players get this feeling of being left out when they see people with high gear and cool skins and they think you can just buy them.
Also some servers are usually very dead but it's good to check out other servers and find the one with the most amount of people.
Haven't watched the full video yet but after spending 4000 hours and about 1500 euro (just keys vault space and character slots) on this game I can safely say it's not worth it and if I could I'd have quit a long time ago but I can't quit and even if I don't wanna play I still find myself dreading the thought of missing a single log in reward or not completing a event
Edit: finished the video and I think it's great although one small thing is you don't have to max all pet stats before fusion just the first Stat on both pets for a max fusion it is however recommended that you do max everything you can because it will save you some fame

I’d like to thank Micheal from Vsauce for introducing me to this game waaaay back in 2012 in one of his D.O.N.G. videos, been playing this game on and off since then, and I’ve loved every minute (except the time I bought loot crates with left over gold from a chest sale)

Last time I played I built a rougue with a planes walker clock and snake ring. This let me teleport, go invisible, and get a speed boost.
I would speed run dungeons and then have my 2 friends tp to me and help nuke the boss for fas potions.
Then one of my friends had 5 deaths in a few days and lost all of his gear and pot storage.
Will play again... some day.
Changing the camera makes it so easy if you have the long scope camera to see ahead of you. You get so much more sight forward and can just adjust the cam to ashtrays keep it facing frontward

I've been playing the game since it came out, I'd love to see an update video from you since the realm rework and party system. (Also there is an opacity setting where you can urn down visibility of non-locked players).
I think one of my main problems with the game at the moment is actually do to the games reliance on discords to run end game content, the monetization of dungeons to having incredibly exclusive runs gatekeeping content from new players and existing players by having requirements that can be challenging or time consuming. being forced to sit in a discord and listen to a 14 year old child tell me how to play the game lest i be banned from the discord and restricted from being able to do end game dungeons.
As an OG of the game, this video hits all the right points of how I feel a lot of the time and it’s kinda why I haven’t played at all in the past year. I’ve done pretty much everything there is to do and and whenever they release new stuff I was mostly over it in a week or two. Right now I’m just waiting for enough changes to happen so that when I come back it will feel like a whole new experience. A couple things that I don’t fully agree on is that I truly believe Deca cares and is at the very least making an effort to improve the game in many ways, while they haven’t been perfect and have made so big mistakes in my opinion they often don’t get the credit they deserve. I know it’s a low bar to be doing more than Kabam did but during their era they literally forgot to end the winter oryx castle event for like 2 years and there wasn’t even any chests or extra loot to be had from it, I had almost forgotten what it was like to not have ice everywhere. The other part I don’t fully agree with is the seasonal characters. It’s definitely a good thing and something I’m looking forward to doing when I come back. For a lot of end game players we frequently make PPEs (pro player experience) which are characters with self imposed downsides that are literally the same as the seasonal character’s downside. I’d prefer if it would stay a seasonal character forever and just not be able to trade with seasonal characters from later seasons, but overall PPEs are one of my favorite ways of playing the game that kept the content alive for me for so much longer.

seasonal characters are aimed at the hardcore playerbase (which in realm these days are the majority of remaining players).
As most dedicated players like me already have all chars maxed out and vault filled with endgame items.
Starting new is really fun once in a while

Is there any other way to get ST items w/o buying or trading them? It's kind of a slog using the items I have now.
Other than those ways, you can save up 15 of those ST orbs you get from daily logins and use them for a random ST item in hopes you'll get the ones you want. You could get them from chests rewarded in the daily logins or for doing daily quests (specifically, the white and purple ones). Other than that, you really just have to grind out the specific enemies or bosses that drop the ones you want. Popping a clover before the fight will help your odds too
My favorite thing to do was use the trickster ability to spawn a fake white bag and troll the whole raid
My whole friend group used to grease the hell out of this game in the school library. Still kind of miss all the fun times I had.
I mean, I'd be down to play sometime, my guild stopped being active so I haven't had anyone to play with lately either.

Ive been playing this game since 2011, what crazy memories. I still log in and play a little here and there, like once a month.
I used to love this game as a kid, but over time the levels of scams, spamming in the chat, and insane monetary practices by the owners got really obnoxious and I left.

I've played RotMG like 8 years ago when I was a student.
It was a pain when you don't invest a little bit real money in because the default storage(Vault) size to obviously too tiny.
Recently I backed to this game, bought some storage and character slots during Black Friday sales.
This game instantly became enjoyable.
In many RPG games with hardcore features like PoE or Diablo, they are very exciting for sure but it is a huge pain when you die.
So many hardcore RPG games force you to redo the whole champion story again and that is very boring.
While RotMG don' have such problem, the begin of the game is the end game, do anything you want or you like.
Also it is a huge advantage and boost when you got enough storage.
You can make a ~30~60% strength of your previous dead character and restart.
The early game pain is avoided with your preparation.
Also I feel farming dungeons is not a tiring thing to do here compare with other RPGs.
Since this is a hardcore game, every step may be your last step if you don't do it carefully.
I can't find another MMORPG that makes me exciting everyday.
So many of them makes me tiring when you starting pursuing max rolled characters because you know you'll eventually get it when you spent enough of time.
But in RotMG, you got both GREAT and HORRIBLE surprise during this journey.
P.S. Compare with mobile games nowadays, buying storage and character slots are extremely cheap enough...
Personally, I found the grind from 0 to 6/8 always the most fun. Why? Because you're constantly getting stronger, getting better gear, good loot, etc. When you reach max stats and have t11 gear or so, the only chances to get better gear are from super rare drops that I just don't like to grind. Not to mention, I have barely any sense of community at all. Everyone is just doing discord raids or chest events and they get 10 potions and much better loot than I do organically farming in the godlands, doing dungeons and killing event gods. And I've done that grind so many times I don't get any enjoyment out of it anymore. Even IF I get someone to accompany me they have outrageously overpowered pets and maxed characters so they just steamroll the entire thing. So I don't play the game at all. For that and so many other reasons (shitty microtransactions, DECA, cheaters, etc).
I don't think I ever got to level 20, but this game was still a ton of fun for me. Might see if it's still up.

I've played since 2011 and I still play it 😂. So fun getting the looties, but there's a lot of very difficult content in the game too which is rewarded with even greater loot to get you more addicted.

Hey there decade old player here, the only real way to know if the game is for you is to download it (free) & try it for yourself. But be warned, the game is not noob-friendly, after the criminally vague tutorial, they throw you into the deep end & expect you to stay. If you do not know anyone irl, or do not befriend veterans, you will die. many many times over. But as anybody who pours thousands of hours into a game they love can say: once you get good at the game, secure legendary loot to make you feel like a raid boss, & understand/accept the game's simplistic mechanics...only then does it truly become addictive & imo one of the best MMO's of our time.
this game is a permanent part of my childhood and currently after years of on and off playing i have 1.6k hours on steam. oh the memories

do you think there will ever be a reverse mechanic, say a developer wants people to stay in the game for the long run, what if they made expensive chances at buying the gear, but the chances of dropping the loot is higher than 0.001% like 5%
You hit the nail on the head when you talked about listening to monstercat and skrillex while playing this game XD. ive been playing this game since wildshadow era and the game has been an addicts worst nightmare. Always come back even after you quit
I like this game for how unique it is among other MMOs, like you mentioned. I'm a pretty patient person so the permadeath doesn't bother me so much, if I get frustrated I just take a break. If anything I like that it gives me an excuse to try out new classes. I also tend to take the level-up grind a little more slow on purpose so that I have a chance to play the lower level dungeons too; especially because I don't really engage with the game's community, so I don't feel pressured to catch up to anyone. I only ever group up with randoms, or my friend who got me into the game in the first place. I fully acknowledge and agree with how the game has huge issues, as well as many design flaws that have even ruined the experience for lots of people, but I've made my own kind of fun with it in this way, so overall I'd say I really like it.

Don't play this game unless you want to sink a lot of time. Like a lot. A whole a lot. It sucks in short term. Also there is a high chance that you will get unhealthy obsession with RotMG (just like me)
11 years ago...11 years ago i made a grave mistake.
Scrolling trough Kongerate (i think that's the name) and I discovered this game.
4 years of good memories and good friends, but 4 years ago something happened, i stopped enjoying and kept playing, and kept playing....
Discord runs, ruined economy, stupid events.... I broke 2 years ago and swore to never touch it again...
I remember playing this game in like 2012 and 2013. Such good memories
Mostly logging in for daily login rewards nowaday. Play on and off.
But I remember the day of Oryx in Nexus, the hacked day. Got free character slots from that. Now, got like 20 slots
Man I miss ROTF, it was basically ROTMG but better in all sorts of ways, it was especially F2P friendly. It was the private server that was just so much better than the original. It also had a lot of new content which was awesome. Shame it got taken down :(
I played for 10 years, spent thousands of dollars and hours. I still go back ti it every now and then it’s insane

This is all well and good, however I can not play it for some reason. Every time I try to play it, it takes up all 230 MBS of my internet seemingly out of nowhere. I am not even joking, I have no idea why it does this. And nobody can help me...

You get to a certain point in the game where if you spend money you're a fool because getting it yourself is easy plus all of the free stuff they give you.

Yooo I played this as a kid! Although I was mostly just running around trying to figure out what to do, I did have a good time playing ^^
32:13 I think that case explains why you can directly buy items and gear, if you don't know what you're doing or if you're a noob you're just gonna die 10 mins later thinking you can now solo O3, when you think about it, the microtransactions are balanced in a way because if you're a bad player even if you spend a lot of money into the game you will still die no matter how powerful your gear that you bought so only experienced players will know how to get really use of this stuf, that's why i never understood why people were so mad about "pay to win" elements cause they wont save your life if you're a newbie
Probably the first real game I ever got into, playing after school on a library computer on Kongregate, and have only finally forced myself to drop in the last year or so. Never have I both loved and despised a game so much at the same time.
those 10 box rolls were better than average i bet. also, going on 8 years of RotMG now.
Great game but the awful feeling of going from max health to dead in one shot gun blast with a strong character makes me suicidal

Wow, never knew you played this game, tbh I think that pretty much everyone has played this game at some point and it just lays dormant in the minds of the masses.
Realm bothers me a lot because it’s a fusion of 2 of my favourite genres (shmups and RPGs) and has so much potential, but is ruined by scummy monetization and bad optimization.
also the battle pass actually worked for realm! as long as you got through 75% of it you no longer had to pay for the next. as of season 3 you NOW can only get 65% off the next b. pass
Been playing ROTMG for since 2012. So much has changed and so have the owners LOL. Bug fixes here and their 5 minute loading screens turned to under 30 seconds. What a ride
Rotmg is honestly the most challenging and satisfying game I've played I remember playing this old game called Legends of yore and always wishing that the game was multi-player and then BOOM rotmg was right there waiting for me
I have very fond memory of this game but exalts sort of killed all my motivation to play it. Which is where Darza's Dominion swooped in and took me away. Just gotta hope it gets updates more regularly one day. But even if I don't play rotmg anymore, ill never forget about it and will continue playing games that follow it's legacy.(also go play darza, it might not be very populated atm but its basically rotmg like it was before pets n stuff)
Speaking about game soundtrack, DECA games was involved in a social media drama back when the bgm composers spoke out about not being paid accordingly, which DECA games responded with: "Audio isn't that much of a priority". Pretty lame if you ask me, because the new soundtrack really fits into the dungeons.

I used to play this game a lot when I was around 8 and i was terrible but in my first 300 hours I didn’t get a single white bag witch is just ridiculous
The only thing i disagree with in this video is about the ost being generic.

I'm 3,600 hours of gameplay in, and the only thing I think you missed is the monetization of keys for dungeons. Much more predatory than selling low tier gear in my opinion.

10:38 los articulos con soulbound no pueden ser intercambiados ni visto por otros jugadores al igual que con los items UT y ST que tampoco pueden ser visto por otros jugadores aunque no tengan soulbound. A diferencia de los articulos tier, pueden ser dropeados y vistos a partir del T0 - T10, el max Tier visible para otros jugadores es del T0-T9 en armas, T0-T10 en armaduras y T0-T4 en rings.
Los items T, UT y ST que tengan soulbound, no pueden ser intercambiados al igual que los items con Tier que dejan de ser tradeados a partir del T14 en armas, T15 en armaduras y T5 en rings; tampoco al dejarlos caer podrán ser vistos por otros jugadores.

Honestly my only issues with ROMTG when i played it back in the day was the monetization and that i found it Insanely easy to die even at the highest level (though also i was bad at the game)
Vet here, currently taking an extended break from the game for a multitude of reasons, I'd just like to state this;
RotMG is a fantastic game... mechanically. A LOT of the games ideas are very intriguing and unique, but more often than not, fall short. The current owners are comprised of some people who care, but a vast majority show they really don't know about the game, or even seem to care about the playerbase as a whole. Having put thousands of hours into the game, playing since the paladin used a tome just like the priest, it's safe to say I have some attachment to the game.
I personally am still salty towards DECA for various reasons. One being they did not give me the same support treatment they gave others (Being vague saying I *could* give something away, only to email a month later and say I could no longer perform said giveaway) or refusing to give me an 8 year inactive name, but having given multiple other players names that were inactive for only about two. A cherry on top was that their former community manager *accidentally* accepted me into closed testing, when he didn't mean to. STILL confused as to how you mess up like that. There are a few more things they've done, but I think you get the idea. This isn't even going near the MULTITUDE of egregious and predatory realm gold purchases.
All in all, I still thing RotMG is a fantastic game, and I truly do hope it succeeds and continues to be updated. I just don't see myself returning anytime soon.
Also deca keeps dmcaing pservers like Alvin's realm and rotf
@@Bubbagaming90000 RotF is the only server DECA actually took action against, and were fully in their legal rights to do so, even if I wished they never did it.
@@Charziken and alvin realms. Rotmg only good cause the gameplay everything else is mid also very mid what they did to wangleline and very mid that they don't nerf discords.
@@Bubbagaming90000 I know for a fact Alvin realms never got DMCA'd. A server with so few players had no impact on the game itself, while RotF did. As for what they did to Wangle, she agreed to the original terms and brought it all upon herself and blew it out of proportions. Were the original agreements shady and predatory? Yes. Was DECA 100% at fault? No.

Kinda surprised it watched the entire video but i have been playing this for about 7+ years and I will say it has had its moment and fun with friends but I did quit for a while and now I'm not ready to come back to this game
As a expirienced rotmg Player i can Say that clip you have shown when you die in o2 is indeed a skill issue

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I've got 2,681 hours in Fallout 4 and every time I say mention it's my most played game, everyone says "Yeah but New Vegas better"
