    Nothing better than the boating life. Been boating off the coast of Virginia for close to 30 years. Love it. Our season isn’t as long as that in FL but fun just the same. Whether it is a ride, picnic, all day fishing, or a puddle jumping trip to the sandbar it is all good. Now we live on waterfront with our own dock.

      I was genuinely cringing at his grand plan to gently pull up to a full dock with a throttle not responding at full speed reset multiple times. I instantly realized the right choice was to possibly anchor nearby and ask someone to pull him in slowly with the throttle completely off. That tow boat would’ve 💯 % made that not happen.

    He didn't do it on purpose but the guy who's engines got hit has a right to be super pissed. The "captain" of the Bayliner is handling the reaction totally wrong. Under no circumstances should he be screaming back at the guy who's boat just got damaged. In stead he should walk over and be extremely apologetic in a normal volume of voice. And of course offer to pay for whatever damage has been done. Many years ago I took my boat to Monty's in Miami Beach. Docked at the marina and went to have dinner. Came back and both my engine cowlings were smashed. The owner of a 40' Solid hit it by accident. He gave the dock master all his info who then gave it to me. The guy that damaged my boat did me right. He actually worked for or was part owner the Solid Powerboats company and gave me two new cowlings all painted and new Evinrude decals.

    • @dannelson8556
      @dannelson8556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What's amazing is all the piss poor observations by armchair sailors who don't know the difference between a throttle and a shift lever.
      Anyone who has any experience with single screw inboards knew instantaneously that this was a mechanical failure, it's very evident that the shift cable broke or came loose.
      When that happens the only way to stop the boat is to turn off the engine which can be kind of difficult when you're bouncing into things.

    • @mikeyd.234
      @mikeyd.234 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dannelson8556 Perhaps if he had checked the 'mechanicals' below deck more carefully he would've discovered the faulty cabling/linkage and terminated the launch until it was repaired. Betcha he does that from now on!

    • @dannelson8556
      @dannelson8556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikeyd.234 Well that's a nice thought, and inspecting steering linkages and shifting linkages should be common maintenance.
      Unfortunately it is very difficult to check shift cables without completely removing them from the boat, as it's the only way of removing the cable from the sheath to inspect it. This is a very difficult in costly procedure and about the only time the cable is removed is when it's being replaced.
      People who are not experienced in boating and working on their own boats have no idea how complex boat transmissions are, there are many things that can fail in a boat transmission that can prevent it from shifting that cannot be seen externally.
      I have over 50 years of boating experience, I hold the US Coast guard captain's license. I was doing boat deliveries when I was a teenager with a friend who was a US Coast guard license captain.
      If I was investigating this accident as an insurance or Coast guard inspector from the video I could only conclude that it was mechanical failure and that the operator took all reasonable measures to prevent it.
      This is a single screw inboard meaning it has very limited maneuverability at slow speed.
      People claiming he was going to fast are simply demonstrating their ignorance, single screw boats need to maintain higher forward speed to retain steering control then do outboards or twin screw inboards.
      With a single screw inboard At slow speeds the only thing giving you steering control is the prop wash over the rudder, it's why you see him bump the throttle a couple of times. Bumping the throttle increases water flow over the rudder giving him steering control. So again the people saying he needs to leave the throttles alone are only demonstrating their ignorance in piloting single screw inboards.
      Piloting a single screw inboard requires substantially more skill then piloting a twin screw inboard with bow thrusters.
      I watched that video about 20 times stopping and replaying critical portions, the fact is he did everything he should have done, it was clearly the result of mechanical failure.
      Mechanical failures of this type are very difficult to detect until it's too late. In fact like an airplane you should have a pre-landing checklist and part of that checklist should involve verifying transmission and throttle control.
      Of course this is not something that is taught and it's not something that many boaters do especially on single screw in boards.
      Throwing the boat into reverse and bumping the throttle to check and make sure that you have reverse gear available is a risky thing to do in tight quarters with other boats around especially if there is any wind because you will lose all steering control.
      Unfortunately this is just one of those mechanical failures that every boater dreads and knows there's not a lot he can do about it.
      I never could understand why boat manufacturers and transmission manufacturers did not provide an actual indicator light at the helm confirming which gear the trans was in. It would be nice if you had an indicator that lit up to confirm that your transmission was actually in forward or reverse but unfortunately that's something that's just not available.
      At this point the only way to know for sure is to put the boat in reverse and bump the throttle and see if it stops or slows the boat a bit. And again that's a risky thing to do around the dock

    • @mikeyd.234
      @mikeyd.234 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dannelson8556 My experiences on the water are dwarfed by your time and expertise with boating and I concede to your knowledge.
      Here's where make you laugh...I was a member of the USCG Aux. some years back and I trained aboard a single screwed 32 foot Chris Craft Express Cruiser. The owner demonstrated the nuances of single screw boat operation and I remember 'til today what he said. Everything you mentioned earlier brought back memories of his boat's peculiarities.

    • @dannelson8556
      @dannelson8556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeyd.234 Unless it's a crawler or a sailboat 32 ft is pretty big to be a single screw, but they are out there.
      The problem with powerboats being single screw is that the rudder has to operate efficiently over a large speed range, if they make the rudder large enough to offer good controllability at slow speeds then it'll be too large high speed making the vessel incredibly difficult to operate at high speeds.
      This is where a sailboat has an advantage, it has a large rudder and even though it's single screw the boat never exceeds Hull speed so we can have a large rudder which makes slow speed handling easy.
      Bow thrusters have come a long way in making singles screw boats much more friendly around the dock.
      I don't particularly care for a single screw inboards and to be perfectly honest I'm too old for that crap now, if I was going to buy a new boat if it was a single screw it would have to have a bow thruster as I'm not messing with it otherwise.
      My 50 foot trawler has twin Cummings turbo diesels and a bow thruster and I guarantee she's easier to dock then that Bayliner.

      I’m a novice boat operator and you have no idea how hard it is to find the time, LOCATION, teacher/instructor, and patience needed to learn. We would take me to a place on weekdays to practice backing in and out of the “public launch”. It was tough learning but worth the effort.

    • @dannelson8556

      Exactly he suffered a mechanical failure, the shift cable obviously came loose or was broken.
      At 1 minute 54 seconds you can clearly see him shift into neutral and then just as he approaches the doc he shifts into reverse and taps the throttles but instead of slowing the boat down it lunged it forward.
      This was obviously the result of mechanical failure

    • @nickmaclachlan5178
      @nickmaclachlan5178 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dannelson8556 Unsurprising when you see how he was treating the shifter before, obviously the boat was a POS with no maintenance done to it........... these are the wrecks that you try and stay well clear of at the ramp and out on the water.

    • @dannelson8556
      @dannelson8556 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickmaclachlan5178 yes Florida is well known for their pretentiousness and hate of bayliners.
      Interesting enough Bayliner is the world's largest manufacturer of powerboats not to mention the world's most popular. The bottom line is all this bad-mouthing of Bayliner boats in Florida is just nothing more than narcissistic pretentiousness by people trying to justify spending 10 times more.
      And from what I can tell it looked like he was operating the shifter normally, I mean have you never actually operated a boat, unless it's a hydraulic shifter which it's not then you're pulling a long stiff cable which requires a bit of muscle.
      I own a 56 foot Nordic Tug , as outfitted it was just apraised at $2.1 mil, but I didn't start with that, I've gone through plenty of bayliners and Catalina sailboats on the way up
      Heck now that I think about it my zodiac 5.5 rib that sits on the top aft deck is probably worth more by itself then most of the boats in that video, yet I don't act all narcissistic and pretentious about it and I don't knock other people's boats.
      In my experience when you run into people who are pretentious and narcissistic about their boats it's usually because they're mortgaged up to the hilt on it and continually need to justify to themselves nearly bankrupting themselves to own a boat.
