I have had 12 surgeries on my left leg due to a horrible MVA compound fracture to my femur, and multiple ACL and LCL surgeries. Chronic perpetual pain is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. CBD has really helped, but the sudden bad weather really sux.
My dad is in a similar situation as Ronnie, multiple spinal fusions, protruding disks, hernias, etc. and man, it’s tough for him. It’s tough for me to see as well. He was also a bodybuilder and before that, a powerlifter. He was so strong when I was a kid, but he gets weaker with time. Mentally though, he remains undaunted through it all. The surgeries just keep coming every few years, the leg numbness gets better for a time but it eventually starts deteriorating again. The surgeries just keep you mobile, they don’t really help the pain, if anything, they make it worse. You just have to choose between mobility and pain. His X-ray pictures look just like Ronnies. He doesn’t sleep well at all, that’s also part of what comes along with that chronic pain. I worry if he’ll ever hit his breaking point and mentally reach the limit but it doesn’t seem like he will. Americans and Europeans are easily fooled into going for surgery for something as simple as herniated disc. All you need to do is - give it time to heal. And during that time - never lift weights but do a lot of stretches to aid the disc to heal naturally. Once you do a surgery on the spine - it is always like dominoes, you will keep doing one after other as the artifical fusion of spine keeps crippling the rest of the spine.

You do realise Ronnie kept working out post surgery against the doctors advise and that's what led to him needing more surgeries. Dudes doing damage to his own body, don't blame the doctor
Ronnie: "the first doctor cut me in the front, side, back, neck, everything. That's what messed me up." Joe: "how many additional doctors did you talk to after that?" Ronnie: "none. It's not just the personal identity aspect that makes it hard to quit. Once your body adapts to a certain level of activity, it NEEDS that continued stimulus to stay healthy. That's part of why Ronnie hurt himself when coming back from a break.

Doctor: "Mr Coleman sir you REALLY need to allow your body to heal after these major reparative surgeries to your spine" Ronnie: "Light weight baby woooo!"
I feel for him, I got 12 completely deteriorated discs, and had 7 surgeries on right shoulder - last one was a stemmed hemiplasty and they honed out rotator cuff & drilled 12 holes experimentally in marrow to bleed into joint for lubrication but the internal bleeding causes some pain, plus I'm missing 100% of cartilage in every major joint except for left hip 20-25% and left elbow 20-30% still left - due to have Relapsing Polychondritis while at the same time going thru 2 serious bouts of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever 7 years apart - the RMSF over ramped my Polychondritis and made my cartilage deteriorate 12 times faster than normal, it's been attacking my inner ears, trachea, floating ribs, and sternum the last 18 months... So after my last shoulder surgery I swore off anymore joint surgeries because it's a losing battle with me that I could never begin to afford & would never wanna saddle my wife & kids with whenever I'm gone. So honestly feel for him, cause when your working out you definitely aren't thinking your joints will be gone, not when you are a physical strength phenom like he was in the day. (On a side note, I only rarely discuss my condition on TH-cam, never on Facebook or in public because nobody wants to hear anyone bitching anyways, as I'm sure many on here want to either - altho it would be nice on occasion for friends/family & trolls on Facebook to realize that I didn't actually get on disability in 3 weeks because of some kind of farce, because when you try to not show it everyone leaps to assuming that you are just faking for social security only, double edged sword, nobody ever feels sorry for ya but also nobody ever feels bad for ya either. 😉😢😏🤫)

So many of us lift too heavy when young, then pay for it with increasing injuries a few years down the line. Good advice to young lifters is that unless you are training to be great i.e. bodybuilding competitions, powerlifting competitions, then pushing it to the limit probably isn't worth it in the long haul. Train like you can train for the rest of your life.
Yup. Screwed my shoulder in 20s (lifting). Despite quitting heavy lifting, the pain became Unbearable in 30s, PT, had 1st surgery, didn't work (despite extended rest and directed PT), underwent 2nd surgery (diff doc), didn't work (despite same recovery protocols), shoulder is chronically fatigued at rest and still in pain years after surgery. Moral: Chase health, not muscle.

Explains A LOT watching this again. He hurt his back (the disk) in 96! This is wayyyy before he went balls to the walls training legs. I had a bad back and there was NO WAY I was going to be squating 500 let alone 8. Ronnie did it and tried to push further instead of going a different route. Wow

I feel like Ronnie is a brother in arms.I'm 51 and been lifting and doing combat sports like wrestling, boxing, MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai etc. since I was 15-years old. Herniated disks, broken hands (3x times, once bad enough to have a slight deformity though not really noticable), torn and/or ruptured ligaments and tendons in both ankles, both knees, severe neck injuries (Dysreflexia) several widow-maker strokes, hundreds of TIAs over a 2-year period that stopped as suddenly as they started, Post-Concussion-Syndrome (CTE when you're alive), destroyed cauliflower riddled ears, scars over eyebrows, and on and on. I haven't stopped working out since I was 15-years old and I still work out every day, sometimes 2, even three times. While I look like an athlete, my body is a wreck and I feel it more and more everyday. Reinjuring and aggravating old injuries all the time. I love working out. Being hurt is just normal, though that attitude almost got me killed because in my first widomaker stroke I collapsed on the ground in my house and couldn't get up until the next day. I got up in spite of being confused and partially blind and went to work. The next stroke 2 weeks later put me in a coma for 3 days and I woke up and spent 3 weeks at Mass General re-learning to talk, type, walk, count, tell time, tell the difference between a spoon a fork, etc. After 2 weeks I could stand and I was doing Hindu Squats, wall push ups, lateral raises, curls, tricep curls, etc. with whatever I could pick up. This is such a tough and sad situation, especially when he got to the crutches post-surgery discussion; after having so many vertebrae/discs manipulated over time, they cut into his core musculature which is supposed to support his spine (and was probably what was keeping him off crutches up until that point). I hope you're able to find the care and relief you deserve Ronnie. You're an inspiration to us all.
Ronnie is so humble to share all this and, without being offended or anything. Good to see the bro really care about Ronnie, offering different options.
I've heard him talk briefly about some of the operations on his documentary, but hearing Ronnie open up about the nitty-gritty of all (13!) of his operations ... it's truly amazing. Just the hip replacement surgeries are trying enough - getting your back done multiple times on top of that? I can't imagine just how excruciating it must be to contend with recovery PLUS the hardware that comes along with it. And the man CONTINUES to lift weights. To this day. That's TRUE dedication
I just finished watching his documentary on Netfilix. I feel bad for him, but it is his own fault for training improperly and overdoing it. I read recently he is blaming the surgeons for why his surgeries have not been successful. But, when he was waiting for surgeries and trying to recover he still kept training against doctors recommendations. Of course he thinks he can tolerate the pain when he is loaded up on oxycotin. And his comments about how athletes always suffer in pain? WTF? That is absolute BS. He is stubborn, but not in a smart way because the sad part is his daughters will never have their father walk them down the aisle or be able to play with his grandchildren. I feel so bad for his family and they deserve better than this. If I were married to him, I would not put up with this BS. I wish him the best.
I think he's the greatest bodybuilder ever. But I don't know how anyone could think it's anyone's fault but his own. Bodybuilding is perhaps the epitome of pushing the body way beyond what it SHOULD do. Lifting insane amounts of weight, taking insane amounts of testosterone as a base, HGH, lots of other steroids... I understand they are dedicated, but it's not worth it. 🤨
I feel the frustration in his voice even tho he hides it so well, every time he talks about a surgery it’s like the doctor telling him he needs to stop lifting and I know that hurts him , light weight baby for life
I took some time off lifting and lost some fat, thinking I'll just continue with my normal working weight while squatting with bad form. WRONG. Doctor said I have a minor slipped disc but it still hurts constantly so I can't even imagine multiple injuries even more severe. I was always extremely careful with new max weights and my form, if it wasn't perfect I knew it was too heavy and stopped. But because I had previously completed this weight I ignored my instincts and just 'powered through' it. That was 3 years ago and I haven't lifted since, if my back ever heals I will never squat without a belt and never heavy weight again, be careful guys. Lifting heavy weight isn't worthwhile unless you're a professional athlete, you only have one body, don't fuck it up for no reason. I know people will read this and think 'well I use good form so it's ok', yeah I was you. It only takes 1 mistake and you'll regret it for life.
Shouldn’t of ever squat with bad form ever! That’s on you. It took me 2 years to figure out how to deadlift safely and it all started with fixing my posture which wasn’t easy for me coming from a pc gaming nerd back then.
Man this scares me. I injured my lower back squatting but I didn’t even know it got injured until the next day. It’s been a whole month now and the pain and sensation hasn’t changed or tapered down one bit.
Wow, I enjoyed his positive attitude. I at one knee, three back fusion, 5 level neck fusion, both shoulders twice, heart, etc. I am over 2 mil in medical expenses can’t imagine his bills and pain. But wow.
All the best to one of the greatest. I hate seeing him in such pain, because if there EVER was a pro who deserved to go off into the sunset living a good life...it is Ronnie C! Such a gentleman and class act!
With all due respect I feel Ronnie's ego got in the way and prevented him from stepping back and allowing the body to heal properly. I understand he wanted to win, but sometimes coming first in a competition should not trump your overall health and well being.
I don't think it's just ego, I honestly think it's an addiction. He doesn't seem egotistical like 99% of the other pro bodybuilder's that you listen to. With RC, it sounds like a bonafide addiction.
@T O That's a worrying thought but it's not quite the same thing. On the one hand a racing driver knows the risks of the sport, but that is not the same as knowing you're injured and ignoring it for several years and then moaning that crutches are annoying you. He wouldn't be in crutches if he listened to his body tell him things were wrong, he wouldn't be in crutches if he put his ego to one side and prevented permanent injury. He's ignored the whole lot and now has numb legs. I love the guy, but he reaps what he sewed.
Ego is a huge part to play in these things. Most men have an ego of some kind, myself included. I have worked out for nearly 2 decades and know (from experience) that any niggle, nick, twinge, cramping, you name it during an exercise is your body warning you need to stop what you're doing and rest. Ego makes you drive though it and cause more serious or permanent injury. He did exactly that. I'm not a hater, I'm just saying if he had put his ego to one side he'd be a lot healthier for it today. Straight facts. There's a big difference between knowing the risks then nothing happening and something happening, ignoring it, and carrying on as if nothing happened.

I hope I’m right.
Has he tried stem cells?
He can benefit from Stem Cells greatly if you can afford it. And tbh, can also benefit from TRT, and if hes willing, even some anabolics or PEDs. Wouldnt recommend it though.
@@Vastspartan no but I learned of them somewhat recently and I’ve been telling him that he should get a passport and go get stem cell treatments.

I will be on my death bed and I'll be trying to workout.Once you are into that fitness lifestyle, it's a habit like any addiction I suppose and you can't break even if you try. I was addicted to Heavy weights! From 11 to age 34 or so. I dropped Squats once, I discovered Mountain Hiking.
Today at 61- it is Bodyweight, lighter Dumbells + Constant Tension exercises that guys in Prison do.
I get the same rush from the hiking elliptical. Sweating tons and an hour on that machine
No matter your stance on what you think about bodybuilding, you have to respect & admire the fact that Ronnie gave his ALL to the sport he loved. The fact he now pays the price for it & embraces it & deals with it with a smile on his face.
ronnie is one of those guys that will forever be remembered as a champion, one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, and just an all round great guy.
not the same can be said for a lot of current champions
Amen, just an all around good guy!
Man breaks my heart to watch this, his demeanor fell as soon as the picture of the cage came out, I hope something can help him out soon, stem cells or other all the best to the legend
Joe: How many disc's have you operated on?
Ronnie: All of em!
or rather - Ronnie : hey Doc, how many discs i will end up operating if i keep training? . Doctor: Yes.
He seems completely whacked outta his mind on Oxycodone! Poor fucker just drove that car till the wheels came right off!
He's aged like 40 years in the last 10 years!
Mr. Shadow and he still we be remembered as one the baddest MF to ever walk the earth....Yeahhh Buddy
Damn, ronnie held together by staples and super glue.
He’s a legend
If i was a God, i would grant Ronnie new body! such a legend
I feel the frustration in his voice even tho he hides it so well, every time he talks about a surgery it’s like the doctor telling him he needs to stop lifting and I know that hurts him , light weight baby for life
I agree. You can tell he is just pretending he is happy and all of this does not bother him.
Ohh it’s all about you is it?? Jeez you’re not the start today buddy
@NoNoNoNii facts push up/pull ups shit like that.. cant go wrong
@Jason Mullings Shit's scary man, we can go from the prime of our life to dad bod in 1 moment
Shouldn’t of ever squat with bad form ever! That’s on you. It took me 2 years to figure out how to deadlift safely and it all started with fixing my posture which wasn’t easy for me coming from a pc gaming nerd back then.
@@trippybruh1592 whats wrong with just doin squats with dumb bells
Man this scares me. I injured my lower back squatting but I didn’t even know it got injured until the next day. It’s been a whole month now and the pain and sensation hasn’t changed or tapered down one bit.
Do a lot of hanging off a bar, and look at some disc herniation stretches on youtube
Ronnie is legend, YEEEEAAHHH BUDDY, LIGHT WEIGHT BABE, CHAMP ALL THE TIME
That's all I think about when I see Ronnie Coleman lightweight lightweight everybody want to get strong but nobody wants to live heavy
Wow, I enjoyed his positive attitude. I at one knee, three back fusion, 5 level neck fusion, both shoulders twice, heart, etc. I am over 2 mil in medical expenses can’t imagine his bills and pain. But wow.
When he said “i want to get my strength back” is like a superhero trying to get his lost powers back
All the best to one of the greatest.
IT WASN'T EGO *IT WAS DESIRE* BIG DIFFERENCE
His is not from ego, he just loves it. Arnold's was from ego
When he mentioned the wheelchair, that hit the feels bro
Poor Ron can’t catch a break man. Let’s all pray for this man to one day walk unassisted again
God bless u
Can't catch a break? He's done what he's loves his whole life and made a living a pretty good one at that an has gone down as the best ever. How many people can say that? Catch a break...... hahahha
Ronnie Coleman is a different bread of millions, he truly has a heart of gold and a passion for training like no other.
