- Eight-time Mr. Olympia champion, Ronnie Coleman, sits down with Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay for a deep dive into Ronnie's life, career, and incredible journey in bodybuilding. In Part 1, they go way back, discussing Ronnie's upbringing in Louisiana where he grew up working on a farm, chopping cotton, and dreaming of becoming a professional football player. He reflects on his time playing football at Grambling State University, describing it as the greatest time of his life, even though a neck injury he sustained there would impact him for the rest of his bodybuilding career.
Ronnie talks about his early passion for weightlifting, which started when his mom bought him a 110 lb weight set from Walmart at the age of 12. He also shares stories about his various odd jobs, including working as a sports writer and editor in the journalism department, and graduating cum laude with a degree in accounting. Despite these accomplishments, he took on a job delivering pizzas at Domino’s to make car payments, where he ate pizza every day for two years, eventually trading slices for burgers, fried chicken, and tacos from neighboring fast-food joints.
Shannon and Ronnie delve into his entry into the world of bodybuilding. Ronnie recalls walking into a gym for the first time, where the owner predicted he could win Mr. Olympia. After initially placing third in nationals during his first year, people began speculating about whether he was using steroids. Ronnie also talks about his grueling training regimen, eating a pound of protein with every meal, and how his strict discipline set him apart from other bodybuilders who would frequent strip clubs while he stayed focused.
Ronnie dives into his impressive personal records (PRs), including a 500 lb bench press, 800 lb deadlift, 800 lb squat, 2300 lb leg press, and curling 225 lbs, revealing that walking lunges were his favorite movement. He claims to have the best back of all time and explains the importance of back muscles in bodybuilding. When asked about his Mount Rushmore of bodybuilders, Ronnie lists his top picks and reflects on why he couldn’t win nine Mr. Olympia titles in a row.
Ronnie talks about his disappointment over not winning nine Mr. Olympia titles in a row and recalls training with his competitors, like Flex Wheeler and Jay Cutler, who were intimidated by his strength. He also details his struggles with surgeries, explaining that his muscles were too big for standard procedures, and after his screws broke post-surgery, no lawyer in Dallas would take his malpractice case.
Ronnie reflects on why he never became a trainer, claiming no one could keep up with his intensity. Even Deion Sanders wanted him to train him and his wife, but Ronnie declined. He also shares the grueling experience of touring in China for three weeks, calling it the hardest thing he’s ever done, and recounting a memorable meal where he saw the eye of a chicken in his dish.
Lastly, Ronnie discusses his family life, proudly mentioning his eight daughters-one for each of his Mr. Olympia titles-and takes Shannon through a typical day as a father. He talks about his current diet, explaining that he now prefers chicken thighs and ground beef because he got sick of chicken breasts and steak.

Yeah Buddy, Light Weight Baby!!!!
🎉
Man...I greatly appreciate the chest tips! This refresher and new knowledge is a help!
Thank you sir. Love from South Africa.
🐐
Youre legend for real Ronnie. I remember seeing a magazine cover of you when I was a kid and thinking “I can’t believe someone can get this big”!
Every person who's ever weight trained has heard Ronnie's voice in their head at least once for motivation. YEEEEEAH BUDDY!!!!
Light weight baby
And light weight baby!!
YEEAAH BUDDY
I stopped lifting and still hear it!😁
YEEEEEEEAH BUDDY No pain No gain
Man Ronnie is just such a positive, humble, and good hearted person.
Except those steroids caught up with him. So sad.
@@randyc3527 not a valid argument. Ronnie stated he had back problems way before bodybuilding. The heavy weight he was lifting in his career caught up to him. The dude is genetically gifted.
@@bigbirdyolo2885 Genetically gifted and used steroids. But you don’t know his genetics.
Thank you Shannon Sharpe, for putting Ronnie in the spotlight one more time. He more than deserves it.

Two country boys having a conversation. Dope of Shannon not showing how broken Ronnie is. That’s good journalism…BY FAR the best interview I’ve seen of Ronnie
Yes cause he is definitely broken
Talk about "broken crayons still color"...it is honorable to focus on what he CAN still do and the nuggets he can still drop.
Ronald put his body through tons of stress now look at him
But Ronald still seems pretty happy.
@@doja954compared to some that are his same age or younger look 20 times worse than him , and he won a title that says he was the most in shape man in the world beating some of the biggest names in his field even to this day

He definitely goin to heaven
makes me wonder what was the point of college
I agree 💯. I rarely, if ever seen someone so happy and positive like him. I really admire his attitude and it's an inspiration for me to just become a more positive person in general. A unique spirit for sure. Lightweight! 😂😂
It's made him cripple you guys. Id rather be walking upright at 60. Pretty sad to see actually.

Ronnie needs a movie about his life. This is some good content.
Who would play him , that’s the question, but I agree he needs a movie made of his life , such a inspirational man 👍🏻❤️💪🏼
There is a documentary on Netflix, but I agree a movie would be nice!
Man glad Ronnie still getting his flowers. Many outside the fitness community don’t know who he is or understand how hard it was to win Mr.O 8 times

"I ain't tryna show out, I'm just showing up" is one of the simplest and most direct commitment and motivation quotes I have ever heard. I love this guy.

My pops said that before
This man had 13 surgeries on his back and still finds the way to continue doing what he loves ✊🏿💯
What else can he do? He can't walk, run, play sports, stand upright. Might as well keep it going
@@SportsMusicCarstruth is,most people couldn't even do that. He has incredible genetics just for recovery. Has his DNA analyzed. He had genes that make his muscles take less damage AND genes that make them recover faster than the normal person.

What I admire about Roney the most is that the man truly found his passion in life. Most people go through life and never find that.
Right even if it hurt him physically He LOVES what he does
Right bro 😢
Sooo true!!! Some people have a passion and never get to live it 😢

Despite all of Ronnie's health problems with his back the man has a great attitude..true champion
Most mortal men would not be able to continue living, let alone have his attitude about life at this pint. He is so humble. THE KING!
And still working out though that's a goat
what health problems does ronnie have... what happened to his back ?
@@usroshan343 all that consistent heavy weight compressed and deteriorated the joints in his back until the point they needed to be fused.
I heard he is in constant pain and despite that chronic pain he still has a sweet disposition.
Shannon Sharp is the best interviewer out there. No one is close. He does thorough research, knows so much about the person he’s interviewing, seems genuinely interested, is very relaxed and real, and most importantly after he asks a question he shuts up and lets the interviewee answer for as long as they want.
I’ve seen several Ronnie interviews and this is the best by a mile. I learned many things about him I has never heard before. He’s a true iron warrior and legend. No regrets, no excuses, no hype, no lies, just a real dude. ❤ it!
nah Joe Budden is better

Absolutely 100%!! correct Butchie. Well written comment indeedy. Be well

You can tell Ronnie is an inspiration to Shannon. Shannon’s clearly a longtime fan so those feelings are genuine.
This has been my favorite interview on this channel thus far. The way he pointed out all of Ronnie’s achievements while not attempting to show him out in the gym says a lot about his character as a man. Salute to you Mr. Sharp.
Shannon is so authentic. He knows he can lift more but he's incredibly humble. Love ya Uncle ❣️
Yes! I love that about him. Genuine, sincere, and humble. Dude literally grew up in the sticks and hasn't forgotten. He also doesn't play the victim and uses adversity as motivation.
he should be able to lift more than a broken down old man
That may not look like much, but those high reps weigh you down quick. Ronnie knew what he was doing.
Yes!! Nothing wrong with doing lightweight for high reps. No matter how strong you are@dmoney7165

Thank you so much for giving Ronnie Coleman his shine. I'm a 50 yo and growing up looking at bodybuilder mags he and Lee Haney were the top. You gave him so much respect. Respect to you.
“I get 15th place. So I’m moving up. Things are getting good for me.” Absolute champion mentality. Even in defeat, displays wisdom and class. The GOAT of bodybuilding. Ain’t no one deadlifting 800lbs A MONTH OUT FROM A SHOW NO MORE. Thank you Shannon for another wonderful interview.
That's the big thing. I've seen power lifters shade Ronnie's 800lb deadlift reps like "He wouldn't be in the top 100 ever," but those dudes are like 30% bodyfat and Ronnie was five weeks out from a show!!!!
Right! Down below 5% body fat no one is attempting heavy squats and deadlifts like that.
Dallas McCarver was en route to be Mr O. Came to filthy and pulled 725 for 6 reps six weeks out. A year later, he passed. He was gong to be a problem. Poor kid

Well, apart from the fact he is a NFL Hall of Fame TE, he is able to maintain the kind of physique most people in their 20s aspire to. And he is 50 sth. Maybe steroids are involved, I don't know, obviously he's a genetic freak of nature but there is no way you can have this kind of physique without very good knowledge of how to train. Quality is amazing. People don’t understand the difficulty of producing something like this. Audio, lighting…. Shannon has really improved at being able to make guest comfortable and pulling the best out of them.
Not super hard.....it's most likely 2 cameraman....set that exposure....set that tracking with modern day cameras technology and you should be good.....the rest is just a bunch of b roll.....love it though....would love to be involved though
I am a filmmaker and content creator myself, and like you, I agree that it’s a great episode. However, there’s more to it than just using false color, setting the ISO, and shooting in a RAW profile. Preproduction plays a huge role. It involves scouting the location, researching the interviewee, and possibly shooting in the location first to warm up the interviewee before doing the actual sit-down interview. Shannon's skill in drawing good content out of the interviewee in the gym really stood out. It looks like they had three shooters and possibly some additional lighting to create a specific tone in the room. The gym was too well-lit to rely solely on natural light or the building's existing lights. The sound quality was impressive, considering the amount of work that goes into making everything look and sound good. I’d love to be a part of something like this myself. I wish I could put some links to some of my films. We have won a few awards throughout the years.
@thenewwatchersonthewall can you please....I graduated from a film program In Orlando a couple years ago....did some projects in school and nibbled in a music video shoot.....a few scripts as well.....I love screen writing so I would love to work on something.....it's my passion I believe.....would love to know more
