The best way I can describe this is: Remember those three friends you had one week one summer? Well, one of them died a few weeks later of a disease that you knew they had, but didn't think would take them so soon. You thought you'd have weeks, months, years, to get to know them better, but now you realized that you'd squandered the time you had. Frieren is a story about regret, and the desire to make things right.
This is Frieren's journey of self-redemption after she realized, with great deal of regret, that she casually blew away 50 years that she could have connected with her friends and Himmel. That's why every episode starts with a count of years after Himmel's death, because that's day zero of her starting to be a more appreciative person. Throughout her journey, new experiences with her new companions periodically trigger old memories of all the warmth, joy and love that her companions gave her that she didn't appreciate at that time. Now that she realized the meaning of all that they did, only 80 years too late, she applied what she learned and goes through her metamorphosis. Himmel loved her but realized that his short lifespan wouldn't be sufficient to give her lifelong happiness, and that's why he never clearly and formally professed his love - aside from dropping some hints here and there (like "wanting to show her those flowers" actually meaning "I want to take you back to my hometown"). Which Frieren of course failed to pick up on back then. That's why Heiter and Aisen felt bad for them.
Yes, Himmel had feeling for Friren, he loved her until he died, that's why he doesn't have wife and kids even 50 years later, he loved her and kept true to that love even if she didn't loved him back. He didin't pushed his love on her because he knew that he will die to early and his love becomes a burden for her if he confessed to her.

Such a beautiful and interesting concept where Freiren comes to terms with not just her immortality, but the mortality of people and things around her. I love this show.
I always figured the reason Heiter lived so well and aged smoother than Himmel was because he was a priest. Healing magic is literally his thing, I’m sure there were elements of that he can use on himself to help stay healthier as time passes. Like he obviously can’t stop his aging or live forever with it but he could probably smooth out the process similar to how someone who takes good care of themself through exercise, good diet, etc would likely be healthier and live longer than someone who doesn’t.
You could also make the argument that the evil aura from the shadow dragon horn made Himmel age faster than Heiter, since we don't really know if the thing has side effects or whatnot.
Yeah, that was my assumption as well. It makes sense that one of humanity's greatest healers would live a long and healthy life since he can prevent the myriad of ailments that tend to shorten human lives.

I am Japanese. As soon as you think this anime is sad, you've fallen for the anime's tricks. Is it because you live a long life and are separated from your friends? wrong. It is a potential part that you, the viewers, have experienced yourself. Very few people cry at funerals. But after a while, I suddenly remember it and feel sad and cry. At the funeral, Freelen is expressionless as stones are thrown at him, and then his expression becomes slightly sad, and the scene changes from the bell scene to the burial scene. Then, after some time has passed since the funeral, Frieren remembers the memories of the past 10 years and cries with sadness for the first time. Have you, as a viewer, ever felt the same way? I think this anime is an anime that draws in the viewers by speaking to their latent parts. I'm not good at English, so I don't know if I can understand it, but please understand it in terms of nuance.
I thought I'm the only one who bawled all 3 episodes (and beyond). Personally, this anime made me feel like when I was 9 and my grandpa died. It wasn't my 1st experience of death (grandma's brother died earlier and we were close with him), but it was the 1st death that was part of my home. I would visit him in the city hospital, but I was more excited to explore the city after. Because I thought "He's gonna be fine. He'll heal up and come home soon. It's his 2nd chemo. Grandma and mom said granpa beat cancer before and he lived 2 more years than what the doctor said." Well, he didn't come home. In hindsight, I took him and time for granted. And he's my only father figure. As years go by, mom and grandma would tell me stories about how he still planned for my future while he was healthy up to his deathbed. Even now, after almost 2 decades, I still can't talk about him without crying.
Although that would be quite funny, I don't think Himmel aged fast so much as it just looked like he did when compared to Heiter who faired better than most thanks to being one of humanity's most powerful healers. Himmel was in his late 70s when he died, which is a pretty long life for a human even by modern metrics. Heiter on the other hand, was close to 100 when he passed which is approaching the upper limits for a natural human life span. Although Heiter clearly didn't possess the ability to prevent or reverse aging, his healing magic pretty much ensured he wouldn't die prematurely of any of the many afflictions that commonly shorten human lives such as cancer, heart disease, liver failure, Alzheimer's, etc.
Remind me one of my online friend. He played with us for 2 week and said he have little time left because of cancer. We role-play in game and he decide to use his name and play as himself. Because he can’t walk anymore irl so every adventure in game to took it as his life. The last day. Admin organized event and created the door that will open after one of our party sacrifice. He volunteer himself and after he did. He never respawn again. Admin announced later that He died due to his illness. His family contract our admin because many players try to talk to him through FB messenger.
I think the reason why Frieren chose a magic that can like clean or remove rust from a statue is because she saw their statue at the City having rust and dirty.
Himmel was around 80 years old when he died. ~30 when they returned from defeating the Demon King, +50 for the next Era Meteor Shower. Heiter was over 100 when he passed (dude looked pretty good in nothing but than a loincloth for someone right about a century old).
I don't think this is a spoiler, just a theory. I think Heiter lived a long life as a result of blessings of the Goddess, and perhaps because he found urgency to keep living (thus maintaining his lifestyle a little better toward the end of his life.) He likely lived to be over 100 based on the timeline that we have.
He is one of humanity's greatest healers so it makes sense he would live a long and healthy life since he can prevent or cure most of the ailments that tend to shorten human lives.
