There was a Food history investigator hired by a food website years ago ( I forget the name) that tried to find out who really invented the French dip sandwich. Long story short, Cole's basically only had oral history passed down by employees, whereas Phillipe's had both oral and print history to back up their claim as the inventor. The term "French Dip" came from French fashion where French immigrant Phillipe Mathieu got the name.😉

Awesome video guys. 👍Having Andrew use different modes of transportation to get to these spots while Nicola battles the infamous LA traffic was pure genius. 5 out of 5 for creativity. LA is such and appropriate locale for this video because the production quality of your videos is superb. Very polished and as usual you kept the fun and entertainment factor a 5 out of 5. lol.. Its awesome to see familiar places on your videos. I grew up in southern California back in the 60's thru 80's and all of these LA originals were regularly included in the backgrounds of movies and TV shows. Just watch old episodes of the Rockford Files, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, or Charlies Angels and you will see these locations back in the 70's along with all of those old classic American cars that were still new at the time lol... This video was a bit of a trip down memory lane for me. You guys really get around.
The camera always makes Nicola look like she is going to take a big bite of something but she takes the tiniest of bites in the end. You must be quite small in person.
BTW, Storm Darragh is causing some real problems for people in the UK right now. We send them our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery from that dreadful weather. I'm sure a lot of them wish they were enjoying LA type weather right now. We have family in N. Wales. ♥ Love you both. Mila and Rich in Seattle. ♥

Philippe's has the BEST French Dip Sandwiches in my opinion and I have had many. I get the double dipped but if you have sauce on the side that works too. When you live in L.A. you learn how to get around the traffic so you don't have to deal with it so much. I was hoping you were going to hit Tommy's Burgers, I love them. It is open 24 hours a day and there was always a line. When I was in college and studying late, I would make a run to Tommy's for a Double chili cheeseburger. All of my friends and of course myself who have moved away from L.A. still talk about how we miss Tommy's. At 3 in the morning, catering trucks would be lined up for blocks to pick up their orders for the day. My dad who was born in 1922 was the one who first introduced me to Tommy's. He loved their burgers and since he was a police officer, it was a great place to hit when working the night shifts. Everything used to be made fresh at the Beverly/Rampart location and then delivered to their other locations but you are at the best one, the one I always would choose to go to. Their Tamales are good too. I loved the Brown Derby Cobb Salad and I have made it many times for a crowd of people. It is a beautiful spread and I make both the Bleu Cheese vinaigrette and also a creamy bleu cheese dressing (for a selection for those eating it) to serve with it. This is a seriously delicious salad. I am not a fan of California Roll because I have allergies so I can't speak on that. I loved Hot Fudge Sundaes at a kid. The 50's diners always had them and they were excellent. The contrast of the temperatures of hot fudge and cold ice cream made them a special treat, so rich and decadent.

For one of their anniversaries, they sold each burger for 25 cents. The line went around the block. It was insane! haven’t had one since 2020. I think it’s time for me to make a Tommy’s run. Sadly, other locations just don’t compare to the original stand. Cheers to you both for a great video!

In 1936, a man named Bob Wian of Bob's Pantry in Glendale, CA invented the three part bun for the first ever double decker hamburger. A customer asked Wian to give him something different, so Wian cut the bun into three parts and added a second patty. The burger became a hit. It would become the signature item at his restaurant, which, as it grew, expanded and changed its name to Bob's Big Boy. The double decker burger is known as the Big Boy, which was named after a six year old chubby boy that used to do chores around the restaurant in exchange for burgers. Wian called the youngster "Big Boy". and the name stuck, for both the kid and the double decker hamburger. Later, McDonalds would adopt the double deck burger in their restaurants and called it the Big Mac. But Wian did it first. Unfortunately, the original Glendale location has long been closed. The closest location to the original restaurant is located in Burbank and has a real interesting history attached to it. The Beatles ate there, and the booth that they sat in is marked with a plaque. Elvis' manager came to the Burbank Bob's Big Boy location to offer diners a "free concert" being filmed at the studio down the street (without letting them know who was artist playing). That concert would become known as Elvis' Comeback Special. The restaurant also still has car hop service on Saturday and Sunday nights, and Classic Car Shows on Friday nights.
And Tommy's chili does not have beans. I noticed that several people recommended their chili cheese fries. Honestly, I don't rank them among my top 5, particularly because they use American cheese (which isn't real cheese since its percentage of milk is too low to qualify). There are a number of places around the Los Angeles area that have chili cheese fries made with grated cheddar cheese, which in my opinion is vastly superior.

    • @user-mg5mv2tn8q
      @user-mg5mv2tn8q 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Strictly speaking, American cheese is actually American Cheddar cheese. But yes, the process has been so altered for the sake of cheap and easy mass production that there's not much of cheddar, or even of cheese, left in it. I guess that just leaves the American in it.

Buying anything, including food, in DTLA is going to cost more than buying it in other areas of LA. Re the hot fudge sundae, I remember CC Brown's. One could also buy jars of that original thick fudge sauce there - it was heavenly right out of the jar without warming it up or adding the ice cream, whipped cream and almonds. For a while one could buy jars of it online from Lawry's Restaurants (which also started in LA), which bought the secret recipe from the family when the family decided to quit the business. However, I just checked and it's no longer available there, either. So it's just other versions out there, like the one you had. But then, any hot fudge sundae is damn good!

Actually that is only one claim by a chef named Toji a Canadian immigrant in 1971. Ichiro Mashita, a Los Angeles-based sushi chef & his assistant Teruo Imaizumi at a restaurant called Tokyo Kaikan in the 1960's also claimed to have invented it. Neither has undeniable proof. Tojo tried to patent it in the 90s but failed becuz he couldn't prove it. Many other Los Angeles Japanese immigrants also claim the same.

We are so sorry to hear that! That sounds like a sandwich we would have loved to try!

@thebritstry ...it was roast beef and Italian sausage with grilled bell peppers and onions, and with an Au ju sauce. To this day it is the best sandwich I have ever tasted, and I don't even like bell peppers.

Forget the Grove. They tore down most of the historic farmers market to build it. I used to live near there before it became the grove. My daughter and I were just beginning to explore the farmers market and their antique shops when most of it was torn down for the grove.
Pinks is definitely where they should’ve gone. It’s a very iconic place.

3 minutes in, and you had an Italian Beef in Chicago, NOT a French Dip. They are quite different (they're both made with beef, however).

You're absolutely right! Italian Beef and French Dip are definitely distinct sandwiches, each with their unique flavors. Thanks for pointing that out!

As a third-generation Angeleno, I can tell you that the horrors of L.A.'s traffic is somewhat exaggerated...
Because 80% of the traffic and be avoided if you are willing to take the less obvious route. Locals learn how to avoid traffic. Tourists and newcomers are the ones who sit endlessly in traffic, because they do not know the side streets and less obvious routes.
Phillipe's has been *in Downtown L.A.* since 1908... But its current location (since 1951) at 1001 N. Alameda Street is the FIFTH location....with its previous location now underneath the 101 Freeway South of Union Station.
And the biggest thing you missed.... L.A. as the home to gourmet food trucks. Which all points back to 2008, when chef Roy Choi hit the streets with his food truck serving Korean tacos stuffed with tender short rib flavor bombs wrapped in a tortilla Which revolutionized the notion of mobile food.
