    I just posted on the Toyota Van Facebook page that I will be doing a custom turbo on my '85 TV using Microsquirt, LSx coils, etc. and someone posted the link to this video. Awesome that you basically have the setup that I though up for my van over the last week. I'm a small time TH-camr as well, and I'll have my whole build on my channel when I get to it.

    This is great! I got one of those (manual YR20 MY84 with satin red interior) myself before I realized how hard it is to source parts for the car and especially the engine here in Germany. Unfortunately my 2Y engine is not in a good condition even though it only has 80k miles on it. I never found much on the 4Y swap on the vantech forums but as the 2Y really is on the lower end for travelling purposes I am looking forward to swap a 4Y(not sure which variant yet) if I can source one and do not need to import it from South Africa or Australia (they are super rare in Germany). If I don't need the turbo for travelling, which Variant of the 4Y do you suggest?
    Thanks a lot, this is really inspiring and even entertaining :D

    • @crhgarage308
      @crhgarage308  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I really like the 4YE that we have in our vans here in the US. Though the EFI is antiquated, they are multi port injected, and that helps make them more easily upgradable. I'm not a big fan of carburetors. All the 4Y short blocks are essentially the same. It comes down to the head, intake and exhaust manifolds, ignition, and fuel delivery.

    What OBD software/App are you running? I have a ‘90 Lite Ace (Japanese domestic w/glass roof) w/a 3Y-U engine. I was looking at gauges but that App seems smarter. Also, how does the turbo affect your mpg? My van is pretty gutless, but I am more as interested in fuel efficiency than power since putting on 27” AT tires and losing anywhere from about 4-6 mpg. Thank you

    • @crhgarage308
      @crhgarage308  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The gauge app is Shadow Tuner. It is specifically designed to interface with megasquirt stand alone ECUs. With the turbo I can get close to 30mpg on flat highway going 65, and as low as 12mpg if I floor it everywhere around town. I can get about 17mpg loaded with about 1500 pounds in the van, and pulling a 1500 pound trailer through hills and mountains. I'm very pleased with the project so far.

    I have the same van, 87 5spd 4x4 with the 4YE, ive heard people use springs in the rear to lift it enough to fit larger tires, but other than cutting and larger tires, did you do anything to lift the front? great video! thanks!

    • @crhgarage308
      @crhgarage308  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front is lifted by cranking the torsion bars. For more travel I moved the downward bump stops, and extended the shock tower. I'm running sky jacker shocks up front, and fox shocks in the rear. I wanted the factory spring rate in the rear so rather than new springs I fabricated spacers for the spring perch.

I figured torsion bars would be a good place to start but i wanted to make sure there wasnt a better way, Ive been looking around at old forum posts and stuff but wasn't really having any luck. How much lift did you get up front with torsion bar cranking alone (not including tires)? Did the shocks add to that at all? also if you have the model numbers for those shocks that would be awesome. Thanks so much! Its all ready to go camping, but ive been hesitant to lift it because i was having trouble finding information about it. Great van and video!
