    Fantastic work! Well done! Specially because I am on a very low income these days (I do Uber & Lyft). However, I am really interested in finding another way to bring cash. That way, I can be more at home, thus near my 7 years old.

    Ironically, at the very beginning, I started looking into mixers more because of wanting to bring more fun interaction between my son and I, during our English daily interactions. He still lives in Brazil with his mom, so we do everything through the internet. We started this since he was at the age of 3, when I left my country because the petroleum industry was very much affected by corruption scandals back then. All of a sudden, there were no more jobs there. Thank God, now things are much better and my son is already become good at English. Hopefully, another year or so, we all are going to live together.

    I also want to add that your thoughtful decision on helping others by giving the Zoom PodTrak P8 is very, very honnerable. Take care!

    Are both of these products useable as a recording mixer for some band jam sessions? Having dedicated XLR inputs and headphone outputs and recording capabilities seems like a pretty useful option for bands.

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I woudn‘t say so as it does not have line level inputs (for guitars, keyboards, etc). You can make it work with a 1/4“ to XLR cable AND a DI box for each line level input - but if band recording is the purpose the Zoom Liverrak L-8 is a way better option IMHO.

    • @AthanCondax
      @AthanCondax 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PodcastMeister Great advice. I'm in the market for a podcasting station like this and was hoping it could pull double duty. I've got all the DI's and stuff so I was very curious. The UI here seems really user-friendly.

      This is great advice!

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AthanCondax it is indeed, but it is not geared towards musicians. The compressor is for instance fine to have but you‘ll potentially miss detailed eq and some effects, that you‘d never use for podcasting but are more important for recording music. Actually the Zoom L-8 hits two birds with one stone as you get the built-in mix minus for phones - sadly not for the USB-input though. And no UI whatsoever...

      @@tombuck main reason why I went with the L-8.
      Might be more technical or intimidating for some but there will always be some upside an downside. I remember Curtis Judd talking about how he felt they stripped the P8 down where it didn’t need to be; I think he was referencing not having 48 but here’s hoping they help out those who’ll buy the P8.
      I’m going to be running my last test on the L-8 and see if I don’t end up going with the RCP but I’m mixing so many different mics and as always... combo jacks 😅 I also imagine the headphone inputs are about as noisey as the RCP.

    The fact that you talked about the headphone amp is amazing, it is so hard to find info on that for these guys.
    I think I'll go with the Zoom - the headphone amp & better mic preamp pretty much seal the deal for me, but there were a few other features that I liked better on it as well.
    Though I agree - I wish it had the inputs on the back, and bigger sliders.

However B&H Photo was blowing them out a couple weeks ago for $299 and on all honesty at that price the Mixcast 4 is the MUCH BETTER deal! Yeah I know not everyone may have gotten the Mixcast 4 at that price…I did and I feel MUCH BETTER knowing I didn’t spend $700 on the Rodecaster Pro 2!!! The Rodecaster doesn’t have THAT many more features than the Mixcast 4

    well I have other Zoom products so for you to diss the plastic the Rodcaster is also plastic and these are mostly to be left in one place in your studio, not a big deal, if you would strip away your little nags about stuff like that , maybe the Zoom is actually better than your Rode

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends. The RCP is objectively built better than the Zoom- there's a lot more metal and the plastic parts are of a higher quality.
      If they're sitting in a studio where that doesn't matter, then the Zoom definitely has some strengths. The added gain, while not being super quiet, is the biggest benefit. I love that! And more XLR inputs are great too. I do think the Tascam Mixcast 4 is a better overall unit that the Zoom, but in my own personal opinion, the RCP is still the best overall unit.

Replaced with a new one. A month later, on the second Broadcaster Pro, the touch display began to blink and a strong noise appeared in the first channel. Then there was a noise in the third channel. I live in Russia and we didn't have any spare parts to repair the Broadcaster Pro. Five months later, the spare parts arrived and it was repaired. After working for four months, there was a buzz on Channel 2. The Broadcaster Pro is the most unreliable audio mixer I've had in the last 30 years.

    Tom,
    Here’s, IMO, where the language gets confusing for some viewers: When commenting that the Shure SM7B is ‘quiet’ after speaking about the ‘noise’ (noise floor). Ref. Given the same gain setting, the ‘noise’ emitted from the Shure SM7B is considerably louder than the Electro-Voice RE20. Why do I mention this?...
    My Question:
    Although the Zoom PodTrak P8 has 70dB of gain, I’m noticing that when the combined Compressor / De-essser (IMO they should not have combined these effects) is engaged, it adds a considerable amount of ‘noise.’ So, I’m curious to know (as I’ve never had the opportunity to use one), would/does a ‘mic activator’ used in conjunction with the Zoom PodTrak P8 lower the gain enough to compensate for the added ‘noise?’
    Thanks,
    yYM

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interested point. If I'm reading right, you're kind of saying "not all gain is created equal." That could be the benefit of still using a dedicated booster- loads of _clean_ gain.

    • @yinYangMountain
      @yinYangMountain 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombuck Tom,
      Thanks for the reply. Yes.
      So, for example, we understand what ‘EIN’ is. But while the two units, the PodTrak P8 and TASCAM Mixcast 4, list their EIN at −124 dBu or less (+70dB/150Ω termination, LEVEL at max.) and −125 dBu or less (+66.5 dB/150Ω termination, LEVEL at max.) respectively, it might not necessarily be the case the TASCAM has better preamps / less EIN. Anyway…
      I was just curious if a mic activator might help clam the noise floor / compressor demons in the Zoom.
      On a side note: The TASCAM Mixcast 4 has become available for purchase. I created an account at TASCAM and downloaded the software for both the iPad and Mac (which is mandatory if you wish to do anything, including exporting multitrack WAV files. I.e., the unit does not export files except to the proprietary software). So although you might not have the unit to review, you can look at the software.
      Thanks,
      yYM

I did notice that with the shure mic you have much more bass in your voice through the podtrak as opposed to the rode mic that sounds kinda thin. We're just starting but some day would love to have that mic. Course comes out the first week of May! It’s all finished and the group of people who preordered it are beta testing at the moment before its public release 👍
      I’m really proud of it.

    Great review! Best one I've found on youtube. So I've been podcasting with the Zoom for a couple months now and I gotta say I'm so glad I got the Zoom over the rodecaster!
    I don't think the Zoom is inherently better than the Rode, just a more Professional device overall... The biggest thing I like is how everything can be adjusted on the device itself no need for software. From what ive heard from Professional audio guys for live events, the size of Faders doesn't totally matter, what matters more is the inputs for headphones and mic inputs are clearly visible on the top of the board, that way you have a clear visual of what's connected and what's not (most audio boards are built like this for that reason). Overall I think the Rode is not bad but focused more on aesthetics instead of making the best professional board available. I think it's a complete mistake/miss that they don't have at least 70db of gain to power most pro condenser microphones. I mean more mic inputs, better filing system, power options, CHEAPER. I'd rather skip aesthetics for a better long-term investment. Again great content!

      Thank you! I really do wish the Rodecaster had the gain of the Zoom 🤤

    The US only comment broke my heart ❤️:(...
    great show! Toms minutes are the fastest minutes on the whole web!
    Really really really good honest and fair comparison video. Well planned, great value of information, to the point, The content in the frame is eye candy, the audio = ear candy...Very entertaining and as always very funny!

      I really appreciate that Patrick!! Don't worry, if I'm able to do a giveaway again in the future, I'll find a way to open up beyond the US. 👍

    I actually like plugging into different channels on top of the mixer instead of the back. Puts me into mad-scientist mode. Especially when recording live. Ha.

    Tom, you made me feel better about the open box Zoom P8 I just ordered for $279. Minimal investment for dipping my toe in this arena. Once again, you provided another great review. Thank you!
