This film was just so much fun and absolutely awesome! Engaging story, cool characters but best of all, giant robots smacking the hell out of giant monsters. Epic. Enjoy :)

There is no Easter bunny, there is no tooth fairy, and there is no Pacific Rim sequel.
Can confirm I erased it from the time lin-
I mean I looked.
There is no pacific rim sequel in Ba Sing Se
Which is a damn shame, because I'm sure a sequel could be amazing if they were careful with it and were smart enough to have Guillermo Del Toro direct and take part in writing it again.
THERE IS NO UPRISING IN BA SING SE! EVERYONE IS SAFE!!!
Indeed! Ba Sing Se is a wonderful, peaceful, and safe place! 😄 /s
Whats better than giant robots punching giant monsters? Basically nothing lmao
The epic soundtrack! 😊
The soundtrack that goes along with it
How about giant robots punching giant monsters, with a giant robot sword? Because this movie has that too.
@@jbearclowateryet powerrangers proved that can be done wrong to!
Of course that just makes this even better when considering that haha
I remember when this movie came out and everyone assumed "Oh, neat, a cool weekend giant monster movie, why not" while no one really expected much.
Flash forward to sitting in the cinema and suddenly everyone starts to think "...wait... this is actually kinda cool"
Followed not long after by everyone thinking "THIS IS AWESOME!"
Shame they only made the one movie, yep, there was never a sequel, not at all, no other pacific rim film was ever made...
me not thinking: but there was anot.........
my brain: STFU U MORON!
Here’s a cute behind the scenes story but Mana Ashida, who played young Mako could not pronounce Guillermo del Toro’s last name, so she asked if she could call him “Totoro-san,” as a reference to the titular character in Studio Ghibli's _"My Neighbor Totoro"._
Funny enough in a Oscar interview following Del Toro’s win of his animated take on _Pinocchio,_ Del Toro mentioned he would love to live in the world of _My Neighbor Totoro_
I highly recommend reacting to Guillermo Del Toro's other films such as _Hellboy 1-2, Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Cronos, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio_ and _The Shape of Water._ Especially the latter two films and _Pan's Labyrinth._
That warms my heart, so adorable!
Didn't Del Toro suggest the name himself?
Also, one of my greatest wishes is that in the future sometime we will be able to recommend his "At the Mountains of Madness".
One thing that i really like about this movie is the attention to detail that Del Toro put in the monsters: Before the scientist drifted with the Kaijuu brain, all the Kaijuu were based on water creatures, like fish and such, but after the scientist drifted with the Kaijuu brain, the first 2 kaijuu are a gorilla and a Pterodactyl, 2 animals that the aliens would have never seen if it wasn't for the 2-way Neural Bridge
They're still kinda based off sea creatures. An iguana and a leatherback sea turtle. But that's still an awesome detail I never noticed
The only thing I dislike about this film is that the Kaiju here are the reason Godzilla and the others in the Monsterverse had to be called Titans because Pacific rim nabbed the term Kaiju first and yes Kaiju is spelled with one u not 2 you spelled it wrong that many times as well and you never realized
@@TaunTaunTundra4477 I refuse to believe Pacific Rim patented the name "Kaiju". Like the word itself has existed way before Pacific Rim. And I think some old Godzilla films had refer to many of the Giant Monsters as Kaiju's before.
@@TaunTaunTundra4477 You went that whole comment in one run-on sentence and you never realized. "Like ok man". Seriously, that part was totally unnecessary and you just decided to be a jerk about it.
@gavinboyd-goodrich9283 Yeah I've never heard of that saying like ok man making you a jerk first I've heard of this
35:12 the reason why most jaegers aren't equipped with blades/why they waited so long to use their sword is because kaiju blood is extremely toxic. this is said at the very beginning when they talk about "kaiju blue", but it's pretty easy to miss. anyway most jaegers' primary weapons are things like rockets or plasma guns that will cauterize the wounds so the kaiju doesn't bleed, or they rely on blunt force to get the job done. blades are primarily used only as a last resort
Unless it’s that giant triplet robot that solely relied on blades to begin with? 😆😆😆
@@thecocoacouchthe Chinese are always about blades over blunts lol
@@thecocoacouch the triplets knew they were no match for otachi, so had to go straight for their last resort, the saw blades.
So in other words, every defeat has been out of arrogance, thinking they can defeat an enemy without using every tool at their disposal? I mentioned in another comment that I felt like local environmental concerns aren't your top priority when facing an apocalyptic foe lol@@Bullboy_Adventures
@@thecocoacouch the robots were created for the sole purpose of breaking bones and causing internal bleeding on the kaiju. Are Jaegers are are capable of weapons AND blunt force attacks, including crimson typhoon
"So where would you rather die? Here? Or in a Jaeger?"
even in my present age and physical condition, my hand would shoot up and volunteer!
That's the best line in the movie
Pacific Rim is an instant classic. From the tried and true kaiju vs. giant mech suits tropes, the main theme that feels so iconic it should be from, like, the 80s, like it's been around forever, the way everything has WEIGHT, the way they introduced the concept of drift-compatibility that allowed for soul mates of all kind, not just romantic. It really is just a superb, fun movie.
"We are cancelling the apocalypse!" is so fucking cool haha
Second best line of the movie
To Explain: Elba is compatible with everyone. Like he said he " brings nothing into the drift " so there's no trauma or memories his potential partner would need to battle through to make a connection. He also can read people like an open book so connecting with them back is easy. The drift was all about understanding their partner. The fights at the beginning/middle were a compatibility test to show that they could understand each other. The weren't looking for one person dominating the other, but an even match between both people.
I'm so glad you've watched the only film in this franchise, and that there isn't a disgraceful sequel that ruins everything about the first film.
Exactly. When he said there was a second film, I thought, "Nope, this is the only one."
Agreed
Make your own content bro
THERE IS NO SEQUEL IN BA SING SE
There is no Dai Li and There is no "There is no XYZ in Ba Sing Se" in Ba Sing Se.
Can I go to Lake Laogai?
Gotta give Idris Elba props for delivering the best inspirational speech since the Independence Day movie.
Yes, but I gotta give it to Theoden for "ride for ruin and the world's ending!" in between.
I’m pretty sure they saved the sword as a last option because the Kaiju’s blood is toxic and didn’t want it spreading in a largely populated area. And it makes the fight much longer and more epic, so I’m definitely not complaining lol
Yeah I hear that’s the main reason that it causes pollution. It’s a fair point. I guess my thought at the end of the world where the fate of humanity hangs on the outcome of a battle, pollution from Kaiju blood isn’t my top priority 😆😆
The fact they made the opening a tragic success? It helped set the tone differently then basically every super powered hero movie and its better for it
So the reason why the Kaiju that came through seem so over powered in the gulf is because the aliens knes EXACTLY what they were fighting. They were built to be jeager killers. But Newt didnt know what gypsy danger was capable of and thats why they were able to get the upper hand on them
To quote Mako, hes unpredictable.
And with the hive mind, they've had plenty of experience against the Jaegers. There's a line about Striker fighting the most Kaiju despite being the newest, which would imply they were sending them after it on purpose, probably trying to get a good idea of its capabilities. Then once they have all three remaining Jaegers figured out, they send two Kaiju designed to counter them. Crush all their defenses at once and win.
The query of why Gypsy Danger, or most of the Jaegers for that matter, don't just charge in, full guns blazing with swords and plasma cannons all at once, can probably lie in the same reason every Jaeger has unique weapons and fighting styles (same with the Kaiju frankly); unpredictability. After all, the first statement after the title shot is 'The Kaiju are learning our defences...', which probably resulted in a more cautious/calculated fighting style where Jaegers try to play things closer to the chest, keeping certain weapons and abilities secret as long as possible so they can keep the Kaiju guessing for as long as they can. Which might explain why Gypsy Danger was able to bring down those two category 4's (who initially used unpredictability in there first attacks to great effect) where the other three Jaegers failed, not going for a head-on confrontation with Leatherback, instead aiming for the EMP organ on his back first, followed by using shipping crates as punching gloves, only then using the plasma cannon to finish the job. Likewise with Otachi, starting the fight with wielding a ship like a club, clamping onto and ripping out the acid sack in her throat while simultaneously freezing and shattering her tail, and only used the sword as a last resort, keeping both Kaiju off kilter throughout most of the fights.
That reasoning is proven fairly justified with the discovery of the Kaiju hive mind, which means the creators of the Kaiju (officially called the Precursors) were able to see every single fight that every Kaiju took part in from the start, meaning they soon began learning how to tweak the designs of later Kaiju's to counteract, and overcome, the Jaegers various defences. This seems to best demonstrated in the fact that, because Newton drifted with that Kaiju brain fragment, the Precursors in turn, also received knowledge of the Jaegers and the plan to blow up the Breach, so Otachi and Leatherback were created specifically to bring down Jaegers with a more detailed understanding of their construction; Leatherback had an EMP organ on his back specifically to scramble the Jaegers electrics and shut them down, as well as what seems to be even greater physical strength, being able to overpower, pick up, and even throw Jaegers as if they were ragdolls, whereas Otachi was given a prehensile tail with grasping claws to clamp onto Jaeger heads, where the pilots are, and crush them, and thereby bring down the entire robot, acid corrosive enough to easily melt through even the armoured Cherno Alpha, the ability to fly and either pick up or outmanoeuvre her ground based opponents, and the intellect to use these weapons effectively, as well as panning ambush tactics. Following their defeat, the Precursors then set their next batch of Kaiju to instead protect the Breach from the bomb while they prepped the first Category 5 (named Slattern) in order to wipe them out quickly
At least that's how I reason it out, I'll admit I could be wrong
Not to mention when Newt tested himself by drifting his brain with a Kaiju brain, not only did he gain access on the process on the Kaiju’s origins, their Hivemind and their endgame plan, but unfortunately the Kaiju gained access to Newt’s brain cause Newt was the only one who knew the weaknesses of Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha and Eureka Striker hence why the Precursors created Otachi and Leatherback to counteract and annihilate the two Jaegers (Crimson and Cherno) while Leatherback incapacitated and shutdown Eureka Striker (the fastest Jaeger) with the EMP.
@@EChacon exactly
@@EChacon This also plays into how out of all of the, Gipsy Dangrr managed to kill the both of them due to 2 primary reasons.
1. Gipsy was considered inoperable or atleast out of commission after the knifehead incident and as such Newt probably didn't know or either wasn't aware of Gipsy being deployed so when Newt drifted with a kaiju brain, they got all the knowledge of the 3 Yaegers but not Gipsy as the aliens themseoves probably thought it was "dead" years ago with knifehead. So when Gipsy arrived, the 2 kaijus literally faced against an opponent that was in their minds, prrtty much unknown.
2. Gipsy Danger was pretty much the perfect counter to both Kaijus. Gipsy was tanky enough to withstand hits from Leatherback and its EMP was useless since Gipsy was powered by analog and a nuclear reactor, whilst simutaniously being agile enough to dodge the acid spray from Otachi and had a weapon that cleanly countered it.
So when they proceded with the nuking, the precursors basically panicked with them sending out their strongest as they were essentially facing a powerful danger and an opponent they basically either forgot about or was compleletly in the dark about. God I fucking love this movie
that warning not to destroy the opera house was so real 😂
They didn't try to have a complex story, they just had two fantastic premises as a foundation:
1. Robots fighting monsters hella cool.
2. There will be absolutely no Lone Wolf Solo Action Heroes™; you have to mindmeld with your monster-fighting [romantic/platonic/familial] soulmate to kill monsters with the power of [love/family/camaraderie/excruciating familiarity].
I love this movie and Mad Max Fury Road for the same reasons. The stories are simple, the characters are straightforward and consistent, the action is excitingly choreographed, the emotional moments are earned and given time to breathe but don't overwhelm the story, and the aesthetic is bold, vivid, and well-balanced. If you can nail those, you'll make a way better action movie than the quippy, superstar-littered stuff that most franchises grind out year after year.
"girlboss, i reckon" is gonna haunt my vocabulary, thank you lol
this movie is so fun! i wish it had a bit more to it because the universe they built is so interesting, but i do love the story they were able to tell. guillermo makes great stuff :)
The main bloke also starred in King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword. It has incredible character development and I think you’ll enjoy the movie very much.
The main thing I love about Pacific Rim, one, its SO nostalgic for me, I first saw it when I was 6 or 7, immediately ADORED IT! Also the constant scale between the giants and humans. They constantly compare the sizes that just makes everything they do seem so much grander and bigger and more impressive. An underrated beauty
"That horn is looking real deadly" that was some serious unintentional foreshadowing, haha.
Pacific Rim is one of my favorite movies of all time. People call it dumb and silly, but it's got quite a lot of emotional depth and tells a lot of its story more subtly than you'd think. Look at the way it uses colors especially. It's one of those gems that grows a very loyal and dedicated fandom. And the fact that they did not turn the heroes into a couple was something I appreciated a lot, it would have felt cheap somehow.
Loved your reaction to Otachi's wings! That was me in the cinema. Idris Elba got to have the most epic motivational speech since Independence Day and I loved it.
Fun fact: The AI voice saying "Would you like to try again?" is the same person who voiced GlaDOS from Portal. And you can hear it.
Another fun fact: The fighting moves Raleigh used against Chuck in their little hallway brawl was a mix of his own and Mako's. Since they've just drifted, there was some transference.
Also also: The first jaegers were not, in fact, built with a lot of care because they had to cobble them together in as little time as possible . Hence the lack of things like radiation shielding.
Also also also: Plasma cannon was charging faster on the new Gypsy Danger because she got updated :D And Raleigh was leading for most of the fight against Otachi, so he didn't go for the sword because he didn't know about it, Mako didn't think of it because she was following his lead.
Final fact: There is no second movie.
This movie never gets old.
3:04 the music kicking in as the reactor spins up is just... *chefs kiss* 🤌
Gets me so hyped every single time.
Everytime you step in the sea this music start to play. It wash your fear of the ocean away!
YESSSSS PACIFIC RIM! Guillermo Del Toro is one of my absolute favorite directors (you should absolutely check out the Hellboy movies) and this one is such an absolute delight, so many kaiju and mecha and genuine heart and emotion from the main characters and their relationships, I love it
This is low key one of my favorite movies. It’s not got the tightest script or the best acting or directing, but it’s just soooo much fun and has probably the best sense of scale in any movie ever made. You pointed it out yourself, there’s a real sense of mass and weight to the Kaiju and jaegers that no other film has ever quite managed as well. The thing about giant massive constructs/creatures is they have a HUGE amount of inertia to manage and overcome, so they appear to move slowly in human scale when they’re in fact moving incredibly fast.
I had the privilege of seeing this movie in IMAX, and I literally left the theater after the movie and bought another ticket to see it again, it was such an experience. I ended up seeing it 4 times in IMAX and 3 times in regular theaters. So damn good. Lol
I saw a teaser with the ship in 2010. And I couldn't wait for the movie to come out. I told my brothers about it, but they weren't as excited as I was.
So when the movie came out, I went to the theater alone. I was 14 and you can imagine a teenager squeaking with pleasure watching huge robots fighting monsters)
In the end, I made my brothers go with me a second time. They didn't regret it
This movie was really amazing. One of my favorite little details about this movie is that the voice for the AI on Gipsy Danger is performed by the same actress who played GLaDOS in the Portal games. Del Toro did an amazing job working with such a large-scale problem by focusing on the small-scale one-to-one personal relationships and connections of the characters as the real core of the movie. Without that, the movie would be hollow, but because we care about these characters, we care about the final victory. Oh, and I think it is a great touch that, even at the very end, when they're hugging out on the water, they don't kiss. It's not that kind of a connection. If anything, it is deeper.
Also, I don't really care for the sequel. It just didn't live up to this one by a significant margin.
Re: soundtrack - Ramin Djawadi has a real talent for taking what should be repetitive boring music, and turning it into repetitive amazing music. He also did the soundtrack for the first Iron Man film and the theme song for Game of Thrones.
The guy whatsisname who plays the Brit scientist, he also played a minor role in one of the early seasons of Game of Thrones as a vicious sadistic sociopath type character who was a member of the Night's Watch, who (spoiler alert for a 10ish years old TV show episode) first taunted, then killed the wildling known as Craster.
Talk about two diametrically opposed type characters here... You couldn't get any more different, really. What a talented, versatile actor to be able to do straight-up evil AND silly comedy with such skill. :)
Burn Gorman is the actor’s name and his character’s name is Gottlieb. He also appeared in _Crimson Peak_ and _Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio_ all directed by Del Toro and interestingly Charlie Hunnam who played Raleigh in _Pacific Rim_ was also in _Crimson Peak_
I was really impressed with him on Game of Thrones after first seeing him in this and how much different the characters were. I didn't really like the character he played on GoT but I do agree with him being a really talented actor.
I'm so old because I met Burn Gorman in Torchwood first 😁 and now he is in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, he is an awesome dude!
So many scenes that remind strongly of the Movie Independence Day, the inspirational speech of the leader, the sacrificial mission to the enemy's lair (mothership), etc.
There is one detail to note: When Raleigh says to Mako "he may be dead, but we'll check!" It's not just a punchline to make it "badass" and make this scene cool.
This relates to Raleigh's trauma with the death of his brother.
The two brothers were way too confident and disobeyed orders, they thought they had easily defeated the Kaiju "Knifehead", but it came back behind them.
Their negligence led to the death of Raleigh's brother, a trauma that will accompany him for years, physically (his injury to his chest and arm, he tells Mako that his arm is still weak) but above all psychologically.
Raleigh doesn't want to let past mistakes repeat themselves.
It shows the evolution of the character, his taking responsibility, and how he overcomes his trauma.
A simple scene, which shows how Del Toro's characters are worked and have real depth.
THIS is the difference between a real blockbuster with depth and emotional beauty... And blockbusters that are empty and soulless.
This is why Pacific Rim is one of the best blockbusters and a real treasure, a real joy for all those who have kept their childish soul.
Pacific Rim is honestly one of my fave movies, Idris Elba, the soundtrack, the kaiju actually looking awesome, the genuine humans/relationships... seriously a great movie
I have a few movies that I LOVE but not a lot of people seem to like, like San Andreas is also one of my fave movies & it doesnt seem to be super popular (also has at least 2 aussies lol)
The Helicopters used to move the Jaeger's used Jaeger technology. They aren't normal helicopters.
26:34 Damn right about giant mechs being slow.
If there was a bad sequel - which to be clear there isn’t - it would ruin things by making the jaegers too fast
@@jamesbernald2850 That's what I'm explaining.
This movie was a love letter to old school mecha anime. The plot and several fights were from Evangelion, the full body attachment system was from Escaflowne, and much of the design and fighting styles were homages to Gundam. There was SO much love and attention paid to how this was made, and it really shows. ❤
Apparently Del Toro was more into Mazinger Z and especially Patlabor and those anime especially the latter were one of Del Toro’s influences for the creation of Pacific Rim
This is my first comment on one of your vids, so let me just say I absolutely adore your energy and I'm a massive fan of your content!
If you like robot fights I'd love to recommend "Real Steel" if you haven't seen it. It's super underrated and one of my favorite Hugh Jackman movies!
Everything about this movie is dope. The mechs looked cool. The monster designs were fantastic. The theme song was fire. And the 'cancelling the apocalypse' speech was legendary. One of a kind movie (there's a sequel, not as good, but I'd watch it still XD).
I ADORE this movie. Simple, awesome and made with love!
Don’t watch the sequel. It wasn’t made by the same director, it kills off most of the original cast, the CGI is awful, and it ruins the story here. Just pretend the sequel doesn’t exist.

And I love the score!
The ship as a bat was what made me want to see it initially! There's a behind the scenes video that shows how Del Toro made the cockpit(s) for real on an articulating platform so when pilots get jerked around it was real!
I love the first movie! It feels like what I thought Godzllia or Transformers was going to be like. This movie just pumps you up so much!
The reason they don’t use the sword as their default weapon is because, although it is incredibly effective, it also causes wounds that bleed. And Kaiju blood is incredibly toxic. That’s why they fight mainly using their fists, as blunt force is less likely to cause bleeding. Also, the plasma cannon cauterizes any wounds it creates, which helps prevent bleeding. And just a heads-up, but we don't talk about the "sequel", because it's just awful compared to this movie.
“Oi! Don’t you dare!”
You’ve never sounded more Aussie 😂😂😂
I like that Raleigh isn't presented as the usual cocky, reckless protagonist (I mean, he's a bit like that at the beginning), who then gets put in his place repeatedly in the story until he learns his lesson - instead they got that stuff out of the way fast, made him a pro, and also the one to guide Mako through becoming his copilot.
Happy you’ve enjoyed Pacific Rim!! Your reactions were great and hilarious!! I love this movie I think it’s super fun and entertaining. Plus it’s directed by my favorite film director Guillermo Del Toro. If u like this movie then u should check out this upcoming anime coming soon called Kaiju No. 8. There is a sequel, but it's like the Last Airbender movie, we just pretend it doesn't exist.
Indeed
They massacred Luigi from Super Mario Movie! Please do not watch the sequel or else it will rot your brain!!!
The baby has those memories because the Kaiju share a hivemind.
I've seen the theory that the aliens didn't have time to perfect this specimen. They didn't want to wait any longer because of the black hole consuming their sun. Therefore, they took the first specimen they came across from the breeding ones. They didn't have enough time to clone a new pure specimen.
The theory is interesting, but there are also flaws. At the very least, why was everyone else normal then?
I have my own theory as to why this kaiju was pregnant. Maybe this species behaves better in combat in this state. Maybe it can spit acid just to protect itself and the baby. And after childbirth, this feature disappears.
Here’s hoping that, one day, we get a Godzilla movie where his G’ness has his back to the wall, overwhelming odds etc etc, something approaching underwater and as it rises up *this* soundtrack kicks in. Don’t care what ridiculous story hoops are needed (and, uh, Jäger upsizing)the awesome would make it all worth it.

One of my favorite movies! Glad you liked it. 😊
A movie about giant robots fighting monsters has no right being as good as Pacific Rim - except that the people who made this movie THOROUGHLY understood the assignment. It's refreshing to see someone react to this who immediately understood and appreciated what it is, instead of whining about how it's silly.
Contrary to what a lot of people claim (it's supposed to be a joke, or a meme...however annoying at this point), there is a sequel, while fun at times, it has nothing on the first movie.
I would recommend watching it, if anything, just to see your reaction to it.

In a recent interview, Guillermo del Toro explained why he didn't make the sequel to this movie and it was so dumb. The producers didn't reserve the studio stage in the dates Del Toro told them and he couldn't move his schedule because he was going to be working on the Shape of Water after that. So sad they robbed us of a great sequel directed by him.
Fantastic commentary Oscar 😊 Thanks so much for the entertainment ❤️ good luck with your channel ! from Perth, WA
Can you react to "Raya and The Last Dragon" or "Labyrinth (1986)"? 😊💖🔥
As usual, awesome reaction! Can't wait for the sequel, and whatever else you have in store
I was this old when I realized the main guy is Jax from Sons of Anarchy.
Funny thing is that _Pacific Rim_ was my introduction to Charlie Hunnam as an actor and even I didn’t knew he was British English cause in the film he spoke in a good American Accent.
Personally the ONLY film to this day I didn’t knew Charlie was in was _Children of Men_
They didn't use the sword emedietly because its addressed at the beginning if the movie that kajiu blood is extremely toxic.
if you liked this you should watch the animated series pacific rim the black!!
I wish there was a second movie ..
yea shame they never made a 2nd one
The mad scientist connecting with the kaiju ok to get know them more so can defeat them but its not just you going in the monster its the monster in your mind aswell and connecting with each other thats bad and now the kaiju coming to where the mad scientist is like the mad scientist guy definitely could become evil and control kaijus like who knows cus the monster definitely would be stronger and take over his mind.
Imagine what they can do when they make a live version of The Iron Giant. I hope they do make one. It would be awesome.❤❤😊
Giant Robots and Monsters is always cool, a good movie overall, saw the 2nd movie also, although can't remember much about it.
