Wholesome Fact: The actress that played young Mako had so much trouble pronouncing Guillermo Del Toro's name the she had special permission to call him Totoro.
This movie had me at Guillermo del Toro directs a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters. In the theater, after the whole opening sequence when the title appeared, I turned to my girlfriend and said, "This is already the greatest movie ever made."
I think the main reason why they didn’t use the sword and resorted to mainly punching the Kaijus is to avoid having the Kaijus spill too much of their blood as it showed in the beginning of the movie that it was toxic to the environment. They only use weapons like swords and other intense combat methods as a last resort.
Like falling debris, falling buildings, or oil being spilled from an oil tanker club, or more falling buildings, or slicing a kaiju in half over the city and raining its blood onto the city...wasn't toxic to the environment? You even see people walking around the dead kaiju without wearing any protective suits/gear. Only people geared up, is the ones digging their way inside the kaiju. They could use the sword and plasma canons as a first strike...but hey, movie needs to movie, for the sake of long robot/kaiju fight scene. That said, this is still one of the better kaiju movies.
@@rdramos13 nobody is saying it’s a perfectly written film, dude. Chill out. Plus as I said, they only used those weapons and tactics as a last resort, meaning there wasn’t anything else they could do except that method.
@Jaden_The_Celestial They could've used them from the beginning. The first kaiju battle was just offshore in the ocean, and no people around there. Then the fighting moved onto a loading dock, with only dock employees around. So very minimal damage could be done. Also...if you are just one mech fighting against two kaiju, that just took out three mechs....you use the sword. So you just chill, I just said it's one of the better kaiju movies, despite little slips of details.

The drivesuit the pilots wear has relay gel that is fed through the helmet to better allow the Rangers to communicate through electronic impulses with each other during the drift. That's what the Nickelodeon gak was.
Absolutely stellar movie that I'm so glad I got to see in a theater, and holds up today, no problem. I don't think I could ever get tired of watching it. There was a change I wish wasn't made, though, since it gives people a lot of assumptions about Mako and Raleigh right off the bat that (at that point at least) are way off. There's a deleted scene with a shirtless Stacker that shows a bunch of scars down one side of his body. They were burned onto him when he was forced to pilot a badly damaged Coyote Tango by himself, after his copilot was killed. Mako stares at Raleigh when he has his shirt off because he has nearly identical scars, and she recognizes them and their likely cause.
Saw this twice, once in IMAX and again in IMAX 3D. The great Guillermo del Toro's love-letter to Sci-fi from Japan. From the genres of Mecha (robot) and Kaiju (beast). Because of shows like Power Rangers (Super Sentai), Voltron (Beast King Golion/Dairuigger XV) and the Mazinger anime series; machines and monsters have been going hand in hand, hand to hand for eons. The history within the movie itself is so well ploted. How the world changed as these creatures came and the creations of the Jaeger program became so advanced for battle against them. Great ensemble cast with Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) and Idris Elba with a epic speech of lifetime. Remarkable sets from the cities to the Jaeger base. Killer effects to make absolute prime goodness. The fights.......oh my god, the fights are plentiful to make our nerd dreams come true especially when the tie-in video game was available. In 2018, there was a sequel aka "Uprising" in which reviews were mixed and the plans for a part 3 are anybody's guess. There is an anime series aka "The Black" on Netflix that ran 2 seasons. This whole universe and franchise is as colossal as it should be.

As far as the sword on Gypsy Danger is considered, it's the rule of just about every giant robo anime that you *never* use your best weapon to end a fight quickly and as efficiently as possible. You wait until you've exhausted every other, minor weapon or ability and only when you've been beaten to a pulp and it's your last and only option left. 🤣
When he said "you look good", it wasn't about sexual attraction. She looks good in the suit, because she is supposed to be there, piloting a Jaeger. It's similar to people, even mothers saying to their children, "it suits you". There's an obvious attraction going on between them, as you see throughout the film, but this scene is about the fact she earned her place in the cockpit and it's her time to shine...
I was surprised that it was released in 2013. Therefore, the production probably started at 2010. The effects is just phenomenal given the year it was produced.
To be fair i think Mako's lack of dialogue in the film is the correct choice for the character. She's a very shy introverted person raised by a strict laconic father figure making her a quietly competent disciplined warrior unlike the loud arrogant rangers around her. My read is that she's the best of them this is clearly shown when she's sparring with the male lead he's a veteran with vastly more training and experience yet she matches him perectly whereas he crushes all the other recruits in moments. This may be my Britishness but there is a reason we call the SAS the quiet professionals in our culture the loudmouths are rarely the truly dangerous ones.

All the main engine has to be in the chest cavity of the Jaeger. There's simply no way to place the drift pilots anywhere than the 'head' of the Jaeger. Unless they had Adamantium metal, all they could do is reinforce the head section.

I don't know if you caught it, but the martial arts test for compatibility in the movie. but a lot of people miss it. It's not about winning, it's about seeing if you two "vibe" in a sense. if you beat someone like 6-0 or if you get beat 0-6, its obvious you're not compatible because you don't think alike, you can't read them or they can't read you. the reason it's obvious they're compatible is because they could read each other's moves, meaning they think alike. but deeper than that, this movie is about trauma, the reason both mako and raleigh are compatible is because they both have similar experiences, in the way that they both lost people they've loved to Kaiju suffering deep trauma from the event. at the end they're able to go against the Kaiju and the aliens together basically confronting their trauma together.
I really do love the sense of scale and weight the robots and monsters have. One of the things that turned me away from the sequel from the trailers wasn’t just the lack of Guillermo de Toro as the director, but it was seeing how light and jumpy the Jaegers moved. Like they had no weight. They looked more like Power Rangers or Transformers. Mako was underused in this film. Which seems odd for GDT. He’s normally so much better with character balance. I do appreciate this movie adding Kaiju into the more common English vernacular, outside of anime and Japanese monster movie fandoms.
Great movie… I still remember being gob smacked when I saw it on cable with no introduction… the massive intro had me hard as a rock and it held up the whole movie… no pun. 😂😂😂
Uh, I genuinely wished that they made a sequel for this movie. This movie had everything, giant robots, monsters, human in Giant robots fighting monsters. I wish that they made a sequel to this movie
The third arm could might possibly be an Afro Samurai reference. The "villian" Justice has a hidden third arm on his back. Justice is also voiced by Ron Pearlman. Or it's just a cool coincidence.
My guess about the actress playing Mako is that her English is limited so the writers and Guillermo worked around this to the best of their abilities. But in saying all that, you have a point about the Asian casts being minimal and having minimal dialog. That could've been Guillermo's decision or the studio. As far as Mako, I get it. I wanted more from her too. This is one of the few popcorn flicks that I genuinely love, just because it's not just a popcorn flick. The writing and cinematography are top tier, the cast and especially the FX are so good ;) This movie needs to continue to be a franchise and I normally don't like franchises of the action variety. Most of them suck especially these days.
They can't take em apart or make em bleed. The kaiju blood is highly toxic that's why they have to beat them to death lessen the kaiju's bleeding. they use blades too but it's super heated to cauterize the wounds.
26:10 I mean this movie is called live action anime for a reason. Lol gets the vibe almost perfect and does a lot better at the idea then most live-action movies or shows that are based on actual anime.😂
Anthony you are one of the most legit reactor out there, cuz u don't fake ur reactions and always keep it real, which is really amazing...keep it up man🫵🤙
Great movie! They completely nailed the size and inertia that Kaiju should have, by using slower movements and grounded camera angles and focal lengths (the Kaiju don't fit into the frame most of the time). They feel towering and massive. Meanwhile Godzilla x Kong utterly failed at that. P.S.: they said earlier that the Kaiju blood is highly toxic, that's why they try blunt force first before using a sword.
Pacific Rim reminds me of watching mecha anime shows like Evangelion. I wish there was a crossover movie with godzilla. I wanna see him fight a Jaeger.
Originally. When Pacific Rim & Godzilla were ready for release (both by Warner Bros), a crossover was rumored. In fact, the Monster Verse itself would've been Jaegers, Kaiju from another world, Godzilla, Kong and other iconic monsters. I mean endless ideas and possibilities.
"Maybe having the cockpit in the head position is a bad idea" Evolution says otherwise... there is a reason why the head is where it is... and that is safety. It's the furthest position away from the ground and the tallest point of 99% of all creatures on earth... the "safest place".
Mako and Raleigh not kissing at the end is really nice. It nails home their emotional arcs. They both have trauma to overcome and do so on their own terms with mutual support and not the crutch of a romantic relationship. It's a shame they don't get explored in the dog ass sequel.

this is such a good film, and Idris Elba is a phenomenal actor
In Godzilla (2014) they did move slower, so Gareth Edwards knew how to portray the Kaiju.
Building a wall to keep out giant monsters. Yeah that worked great on AOT.
Love you guys ❤❤
The third arm could might possibly be an Afro Samurai reference. The "villian" Justice has a hidden third arm on his back. Justice is also voiced by Ron Pearlman. Or it's just a cool coincidence.
Man one of my fav sci-fi movies 🍿 awesome review guys! Too bad it didn’t get a sequel
Finally having regular uploads 😅
"Why's Manila?" Well maybe because the movie called PACIFIC Rim 😂
I forgot that GLaDOS was the computer’s voice. 🤣
The kaiju blood is highly toxic that's why they have to beat them to death lessen the kaiju's bleeding. they use blades too but it's super heated to cauterize the wounds.
oh so you guys are going back and checking out all the big robot movies lol me gusta!
26:10 I mean this movie is called live action anime for a reason. Lol gets the vibe almost perfect and does a lot better at the idea then most live-action movies or shows that are based on actual anime.😂
Nice!
This is an awesome movie!
The sequel sucked, as it wasn't well received by critics or fans and it was a box office disappointment.
Anthony you are one of the most legit reactor out there, cuz u don't fake ur reactions and always keep it real, which is really amazing...keep it up man🫵🤙
It's truly not "amazing" feats despite most don't fake reacts
Great movie! They completely nailed the size and inertia that Kaiju should have, by using slower movements and grounded camera angles and focal lengths (the Kaiju don't fit into the frame most of the time). They feel towering and massive. Meanwhile Godzilla x Kong utterly failed at that. P.S.: they said earlier that the Kaiju blood is highly toxic, that's why they try blunt force first before using a sword.
Watch the second movie it's actually a solid film overall. Yes the first one is the best but part 2 is fun as well.
Steph looks nice today.
This movie reminds me of Robot Jox,
Omg steph is wild with her commentary 🤣
Pacific Rim reminds me of watching mecha anime shows like Evangelion. I wish there was a crossover movie with godzilla. I wanna see him fight a Jaeger.
Originally.
When Pacific Rim & Godzilla were ready for release (both by Warner Bros), a crossover was rumored.
In fact, the Monster Verse itself would've been Jaegers, Kaiju from another world, Godzilla, Kong and other iconic monsters.
I mean endless ideas and possibilities.
@@k.delpino1124 no. Guillermo Del Toro (director) specifically said he didn't just want it to be his godzilla, he wanted it to be its own thing.
@@paperclip6377 well both seemed close together by the timing.
"Maybe having the cockpit in the head position is a bad idea"
Evolution says otherwise... there is a reason why the head is where it is... and that is safety. It's the furthest position away from the ground and the tallest point of 99% of all creatures on earth... the "safest place".
Also given that the power source at the center of the torso is a nuclear reactor, having the pilots at the torso is not a good idea.
Love u guys❤❤
Now watch King Arthur legend of sword....same actor ...
if you want to watch something in the highest setting, bluray, 4k, hd, and all that, this is the movie.
This movie has convinced me that its possible for Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam can be adapted to live-action cinema.
This was the Father of Autobots and Decepticons...this is where it Al began...this movie is so so Underrated
One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when they pull the sword out and Mako says, "For my family." in Japanese idk that was bad ass.
Very anime moment.
Mako and Raleigh not kissing at the end is really nice. It nails home their emotional arcs. They both have trauma to overcome and do so on their own terms with mutual support and not the crutch of a romantic relationship. It's a shame they don't get explored in the dog ass sequel.
Aint no way u yall didnt see pacific rim till now WILD
