Am I the only one who remembers the absolute shift in horror movies after this came out. Like at this time there were captive movies, slasher movies, and more people based horror movies. Then after this there were so many possessed family movies lol
Perhaps there was a trend in trying to recreate what Paranormal Activity did in a mass production fashion. However, I'm not sure it's a shift as you call it. Be fore this there were pretty good movies based around hauntings in familial households: The Sixth Sense, The Others, The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist series, The Skeleton Key (though it's been long for this last one, perhaps it was more about disturbing voodoo rather than hauntings).
Unrelated to your comment, but I remember seeing commercials that showed people in the theater passing out and throwing up at this movie. When I finally saw it, I was so disappointed because not a single thing in this movie warrants that type of reaction lmao

I recommend watching the alternate ending that implies that Katie could’ve just murdered Micah with no supernatural force controlling her at all. It’s way more interesting to me. I also HIGH KEY recommend the second movie. I feel like the acting was even better in that one.
Legit watched this alone in my unfinished garage when this first came out, I was scared shitless and it’s honestly one of the only paranormal/horror films that still scares me
Watched it in highschool without context of the other movies and I thought it was real lmao, I was scared so fucking bad all day at school, honestly it haunted me until I saw the 2nd one and understood it was just a movie and not actual found footage lol

the scariest part of these movies to me are how realistic they seem (i know that’s the point) but i just think that the actors did a really great job and the writers did an awesome job giving the characters tasks that seem like something real people would do if it was happening to them
