    This is the B side to Depot street released in 1975. Wild Eyes. 45rpm
    Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Randall Marsh, Tom Leadon

    Wild Eyes (Thomas Petty)
    VERSE I:
    You used to look wild-eyed;
    Back when there was mystery in your smile.
    You seem so hungry, and deprived.
    Oh you played it so sly,
    The way you made it seem so do-or-die.
    You used to try to live your life so high.
    CHORUS
    And that don't make no difference now,
    'Cause you're hard to recognize
    Without those wild, wild eyes.
    Now you're just a captive inside.
    INTERLUDE
    Remember when we used to say,
    "Only time can fade away"?
    Yes, and now it seems to complicate,
    What is gone, and what remains?
    Wonder if we're still the same.
    Wonder if we're still the same inside.
    VERSE II:
    Oh you had a long ride,
    With me you feel restless and confined,
    Because you had to leave so much behind.
    And you used to look wild-eyed;
    Back when there was mystery in your smile,
    You seem so hungry and so deprived.
    CHORUS
    But that don't make no difference now,
    'Cause you're hard to recognize
    Without those wild, wild eyes.
    Now you're just a captive inside.
    CHORUS
    But that don't make no difference now,
    'Cause you're hard to recognize
    Without those wild, wild eyes.
    Now you just look empty and resigned,
    Yeah now you just look empty inside.

    I played bass on this song and sang the harmony vocal. I thought this should've been the A-side of the single release. Depot Street is a cool tune, but it was too different for radio programmers. Rest In Peace, Tom.....

      The bass was the first thing I noticed when I heard this. Any other tracks you played on?

      After the first TP & Heartbreakers album came out when I was 12, I was a fanatic, I sought out everything I could find in the back of the Trouser Press, I got the Mudcrutch 45, 2 copies. "Wild Eyes" was definitely the "A" side for me! It remained one of my favorite TP songs, probably tied or equal to "American Girl".

    Really good song. Now need to find Depot Street. Think Wild Eyes could have been an A side.

    I love this song. Mudcrutch sounds entirely different then TP and the Heartbreakers . They sound 60s to mid 70s. I grew up with that music. Did they have albums?

    • @jocelyneke6445
      @jocelyneke6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Tom seemed to be singing like Dylan.

    • @susanmurrell635
      @susanmurrell635 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Petty sang like himself. He had an unusual voice, which I think made him stick out, in a great way and helped his career and think he had a natural inclination to sound like Dylan. He also could use his voice in different ways,
      depending on the song. I'd have to listen to it again to see if I hear any Dylan. I think
      his lyrics are really good for so early on in his career. Love ❤ TP. Never be another
      like him.
      If you've listened to Mike Campbell and his
      band, he really sounded so much like Tom,
      especially in 2018, 2019. He's said he is trying not to as much, but I loved it. After
      50 yrs of playing, singing and just knowing
      eachother.....plus coming from same place in Florida, there are similarities. Hope to get to go to a Mike Campbell and Dirty Knobs
      concert sometime.

      @@susanmurrell635 I saw The Dirty Knobs a few weeks ago. Out of the the following I’ve seen; Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Phil Collins.. the Knobs put on the best show for sure. Very memorable.
