I honestly love this kind of design- there’s so much room for choice and player agency, both for the Talion player and the other players at the table. The Talion player gets to pick the number, and then every opponent has to carefully consider their plays and decide what is worth giving you the cards.
I think you name 1 every time. You get all the interaction and tutor spells which you'll want to be drawing cards from. Naming 1 also hits on dockside, and Thoracle and a bunch of other relevant creatures that aren't necessarily 1 cmc.
I love cards that do these little increments of damage that are mostly unnoticed by the table. While yes you did draw say...5 cards, the necropotence player draws 10 less cards now, or the ad naus ends alot sooner.
I just put this together. Used Nymris build. Took out some interaction. Threw in Sheoldred, the apocalypse, a couple of clones, and Teferi’s ageless insight, and called it good. This might also be my mind crank/ bloodchiefs ascension deck
@@MollymaukTealeaf-et3vg sakishima and phantasmal image. I was going to throw in spark double but decided to go with Teferi’s ageless insight instead of focusing on making clones of Talion. i figured enchantments are less likely to be removed. So basically SakashIma.
Its also a STAX card in addition to being a card draw engine, so it can pull some weight, as it prevents all kinds of combos that need to cast a bunch of spells on repeat. Against the ad naus guy, on 2 they might lose a bunch of extra life, so they cant draw too much. Against the looping Dockside getting played over and over, they lose 2 life and you draw each cast. If this draws you like 5+ cards and costs the opponents 10+ life it might stax out some combo lines that suddenly cant execute. Playing it for 2 hits quite a large number of spells currently. 4 mana is still a bit much, but it might be something worth playing.
If you have any clone effects declaring 1 and 2 would give you an insane amount of draw. Probably less cEDH viable because legendary but damn thats a lot of draw power. Love this card as well
@@johnweinhandl8890 still that's 8 mana to be able to select 1 & 2 to draw 1 and deal 2 damage off of most spells. That'd be way to slow for some game and fine for others and outside of absolute cancer I prefer my clones to be 2 & 3 mana. Tbh that could be viable in a dedicated control deck with a thoracle consult WinCon 🤷 Outside of cEDH doing the exact same thing selecting 2 & 3 would probably be a mear insurmountable amount of card advantage.
@@johnweinhandl8890 it's definitely an easy cost but it's payout is much much more immediate in atraxa. I feel that by the time you get your commander, unless you Jewel+Land and first in turn order, 1>2. Most talismans people try to get on turn 1, keeping a hand that puts talisman turn 2 is too slow, let alone later. Similar-ish with things like stax pieces like Dranith. The remaining things you mentioned are game-ending often, if someone casts thassa, 1 card draw unlikely will help you. On the other hand, counter wars, 1 mana removals, etc. often happen late in the game, after your commander is out, and aren’t game ending (in fact, often the opposite), so you get value as game drags out.
I'm definitely going to try it in the 99 of a deck even if I don't expect it to stick. If games are long enough that we're liking The One Ring then there's a chance this is good enough. Being a creature is a mixed blessing; it's easier to remove but harder to counter, and if you name the right number the removal spell may draw you a card anyway. I think whether you name one or two might depend on the pod and when it comes down but I lean towards one. It's probably coming down too late to get most of the dorks, but there are a lot of one mana spells and because it looks at power and toughness it will still hit a lot of 2 cmc creatures like Thoracle, Dockside, and Bowmaster.
Oh yeah, I meant to be grateful for a white crater hoof. Meanwhile in dimir we get a rhystic study in the command zone. I sorry I have been pretty negative in the comments lately but I only mentioned this recently regarding UB power creep out pacing white power correction. 😢
Really? 2? 1 seems leagues better. The best tutors are 1 cmc, all cantrips, most creatures have power or toughness 1, the best counterspells, rituals, etc.

Mons likely forgot its not just Mana Value. It's also Power or Toughness of 1. There's no way you name 2 over 1 most games.
First? If only it could choose 0 as well!
I think 1 is better. Gives you more draws and answers during counter wars. Plus mana dorks and creature staples usually have power or toughness 1.
Also hits the Tymnas, Docksides, etc with Power or Toughness 2 and there are a lot of those that are played.
Ragavan, Drathrite Shaman, Archon of Emeria, ect.

What clones did you use? Assuming you're cloning Talion, how are you getting around Legend Rule?

My only complaint is that it’s not a may ability. It could easily ruin your sushi combo, or accidentally feed a notion thief
