I’m surprised no one’s mentioned this. In the physical copy of Journal 3 they released after the show ended, there’s a few pages that Mabel writes about Bipper. She says that since she saw Dipper in like a more demonic presence because it was the first time she saw him with a full set of teeth smile, gums and all. It was really horrifying to her. And after the puppet show she also shows that she finds a letter written by Bipper explaining his plan for Dippers body. And I’m not joking he literally says “after I destroy that journal I’ll give this body it’s grand finale: throwing it off the water tower! The town will just think Pine Tree lost his mind! Wanna join him Shooting Star?”. So yeah, pretty dark lol

Fun Fact: Dipper was asleep when he saw the countdown. Isnt it convenient that the PC would only display it when he is tired out of his mind after trying thousands of different combinations and how the countdown goes from a few minutes to seconds in an instant?

@@devinsteele2424 Also we know that Bill cannot exist in the real world. And most importantly: Bill smashed the PC after taking control. No need to do that if the data is erased anyway.
Yeah, I was really paying attention this time, and it's VERY obvious that we're shown Dipper, and the countdown is going from 4:00 to 3:59, then the shot goes to Bill, who says something quite short, and then we're shown Dipper again and suddenly the countdown is going from 3:00 to 2:59 -- and NO WAY has 1 minute passed. It does that one more time (cut away to something short, back to show 2:00 to 1:59), before finally showing the last 30 seconds. The scene is all dialogue (so you know there isn't any "hidden passage of time" in there), and it only takes 1 minute 4 seconds for that to play out, and for the timer to go from 5:00 to 0:23.
@@gryphonvert Do you think Bill shortened the time bit by bit to make Dipper pressured into giving an immediate answer? If so, then that's awesome.
That probably means the countdown didn't even exist, Bill only made him see that countdown the moment he fell asleep.
This episode is so good. One of my favorites of the series. :]
Also "fun" fact from the irl journal, there's a page that Mabel wrote about Bipper. She said it was the first time she ever saw Dipper smiling with all his teeth to the gums, and it terrified her. She also writes that she found a note left by Bill that details a plan to destroy the journal and then jump from the water tower while in Dipper's body. She was messed up for a while after reading it. I AM, TOO.
Also, my friend has a grey and white cat named Watson too 🥺 so cute
I'm also pretty sure the show was designed this way purposefully, with a balance of an overarching, darker plot, but also fun side adventures. It definitely was planned to be just two seasons, also.
That's been my favorite "fun" fact to share with reactors hahaha, it's SO messed up

I gotta give props to Bill in Sock Opera. He IS a master manipulator. He got Dipper and a ton of the fanbase convinced she’s super selfish & never sacrifices for Dipper. Truthfully she’s not more selfish than Dipper or any child.
Bill says this while showing scenes of situations where Mable was in danger, was doing the right thing for someone else, or is a victim of Dipper being selfish. It was entirely to make dipper think about his sacrifices w/o context and take the deal. That and the laptop was counting down to “delete” the data in the mindscape, where time should be frozen. He does this after yawning and blinking his eyes. Bill made it all up.
It’s really good, most ppl don’t notice it.

Nah, mabel is 100% selfish
Dipper has his selfish moments but ultimately his arc revolves around learning to sacrifice for the people around him, especially Mabel. To the very end she only considers his wants and needs when it’s in the context of fixing a problem she caused for him in the first place.

In terms of the creation of Bill Cipher, basically, Hirsch just wanted to annoy Illuminati theorists by turning the pyramid from the dollar bill (hence BILL'S name origin) into an actual demon. To answer John's question, Hirsch had a plan for three seasons, but it's DRAINING to make a TV show. He even wanted to end the series after season one and ultimately end the series on a cliffhanger. After he was convinced to finish Gravity Falls, he went to the network, who said they only do 20 episode seasons, Hirsch agreed but made sure it was on paper that it would be his last season, and the studio agreed. I can't find anything on if there was tonal clash between Disney and Hirsch, but from what I could find, it sounds like the writers just did their thing, and then Hirsch would actually revise a LOT of the dialogue. Like all of Dipper and Mabel's lines would be rewritten by Hirsch which makes sense, it's based on his own life, and himself and his own sister.
I think because the show was so well received initially, Disney felt like maybe it was best to let Hirsch do his thing for season 2. And BOY do we reap the rewards for Disney backing off a bit. The show's lasting legacy and impact are not to be understated. It's a perfect example of how animation is NOT just for kids-kids can like the wacky adventures, and the adults love figuring out the ciphers and theorize what will happen. It took everyone on a ride.
One thing I have noticed since Gravity Falls is that their are a good number of shows afterwards that do a similar route of having an overarching plot while also making it a horror comedy. Star vs The Forces of Evil, Amphibia, The Owl House and Ghost and Molly Mcgee are shows that I think we have to thank the success of Gravity Falls for existing.
I would have appreciatted a third season, he should have appointed another person to show run for him.

The Mable "vs" Dipper being a knowing wink or analogy to the episodic vs serialized was really insightful! I appreciate that thought. I hadn't thought about that but it makes complete sense! I'm also glad they brought up the fact that Dipper does in the end tend to let Mabel get her way, which is fine. But it was nice to give her an opportunity to realize it and return the favor.
"You drive a biscotti!?" is my favorite joke for grown ups in this show. Like, mostly only dads are gonna get that.
I think Tina Fey would have made that joke as a young girl, ha ha. It's brilliant.
He didn't sacrifice for her in the time travelers pig. He just fixed what he should not have done in the first place.
I mean that’s debatable. All he wanted to do was avoid hurting Wendy and all Mabel wanted was a pig she’d had for like an hour. Arguably dipper’s want was more important but he sacrificed it anyway
@@kamronspencer4910 She won Waddles fair and square, how long she had him is irrelevant. He tried to play a game with Wendy and she got hit, than he stole a time travel device that he had no business touching so he could change time so he could try to get in Wendy's pants. If her getting hit helped his cause he would not have tried to change it. The original proper timelime was Mabel getting Waddles and Wendy getting hit, he changed it for selfish reasons. Mabel can be plenty selfish but she was in the right in this situation.
@@3kylajsmithdipper did not know not hurting Wendy would lead to no waddles when he asked her to help and both he and Mabel wanted the time machine. Also time absolutely matters. Wendy has been dippers friend and crush all summer fixing his relationship with her is a big deal. Mabel had waddles an hour. I’m not saying Mabel “didn’t deserve waddles” but dipper sacrificed more than Mabel would have had she been willing to and she wasn’t willing to.

I love Mabel and all, but when she wanted to continue her stupid puppet show when Bill was literally planning on destroying the journal and jumping off the water tower in Dipper’s Body (stated in the Journal 3 book) really ticks me off, risking her own brothers life just to impress a guy she just met like bruh
Had she read Bipper’s letter at that point…? No, or she’d never have considered it. She’s ALWAYS acted to save Dipper when he was in danger. Mabel was looking for a way to get Dipper’s body back when Bipper approached her. She thought only the journal was at stake, not her brother’s life.
