I Had A Man Ask Me To Sell It To Him He Offered $600 I Turned It Down. They Run Forever And The 5.5Hp Kawasaki Motor Is A Little Beast Never Bogs Down Even In Zoysia Grass. Thnx For Swinging Pass My Channel 👍The John Deere 14SB lawnmower is another quality, classic piece of machinery from the crew at John Deere. This walk behind, 5 speed, self propelled mower has long since finished it’s production run but is still quite a sought after piece by JD enthusiasts.
It is powered by an FC150 Kawasaki engine, that pumps out 5hp, which is really quite a lot of power for such small lawn mower. Perhaps John Deere made a mistake when they were creating this model and gave it an engine that was far more powerful than needed. The upside to this however is that you can easily take on long wet grass without having to worry that the engine is going to cut out even when you are mulching the grass. It also has the advantage of being able to also take a bagger.
The John Deere 14SB has a 21 inch mower deck, which is pretty standard for a walk behind, self propelled lawnmower. While many people remark on the longevity and strength of this model, the only real downside to it is that it weighs quite a bit. But this is due in large part to it’s engine. The great thing about this model though, like all John Deere models is that even though it may have been over 10 years since one has been produced, there are still replacement parts available for it from John Deere.
Some feel that it’s the reliability of the Kawasaki engine that makes this model so great, while others feel that it’s the John Deere parts that make up the rest of the lawn mower that make it so good. The jury is still out. If you own a 14 SB or have ever used one, please leave your thoughts on it in the review section below.

Tony, I am the original owner of a 1987 14sb Green Deck TY14SBA SN in the early 404,000. I have my gress cut twice monthly by a service, but between I cut the back yard (with the good grass) in between their mowing. It is a green deck and I have the bag side chute and the mulch-er attachment as well as the owners manual, parts list and technical manual. Looking at the mower The back wheels have faded to almost white --- so I decided to paint them yellow again. The grease on the drive gears appeared to have been a clear grease but now it has changed to almost amberr. Mineral spirits would not desolve it without a lot of scraping. I did get it all off and the outside is now krylon Fusion yellow. ( chose that color because it is made for plastic and not metal like the JD paint. Now comes my problem. What to use for grease. The owner's manual calls for TY635 Aluminum complex grease. for ssn below 400,000 and am104468for above 400,000. I have an old tube of ty6355 Its wierd stuff. Also tried to order some of the am104468 but its not available. I did get TY24425 which is recomended for lawn equuipment. and in the garage I have mobile1 and som JD polyuria grease. The problem i have is the plastic gears molded into the drive wheels is the same plastic as the rest of the wheel. I rerad that lithium grease is not the best for metal on plastic gears. Also the original grease is NLGI grade 1. I don't know what grease would prerserve the plastic gears. Most important my JD dealrer went out of business 5 or 6 years ago. WHAT GREASE TO USE TO PROTECT THE PLASTIC GEARS. Thanks Gary

Great ? Gary my answer is to your solution will be ((( Super Lube Silicone, Lubricating Grease ))) is dielectric, food grade, clean and environmentally friendly. It can be used on plastic gears, plastic threads or as a damping medium. Super Lube Silicone Lubricating Grease is compatible with the majority of rubber and plastic compounds. www.amazon.com/Super-Lube-41160-Synthetic-Translucent/dp/B0083R1FME/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=grease%2Bfor%2Bplastic%2Bgears&qid=1695635403&sr=8-10&th=1

I kick myself for not buying one of the JD Dethatchers years ago when they were cheap. Although my Sunjoe Detchatcher/Scarifier works much better than anticipated.

My neighbour was a big wig at John Deere growing up. Sold my father this lawn mower when I was 13 in 88 lighty used as he always getting the next best thing. Absolutely ahead of its time. Don't know how I got here on TH-cam but my appreciation of excellence may have helped. This mower would still stand the test of time today and blow almost everything else away with easy. Definitely commercial quality that has stood the test of time. Thanks for posting my childhood memories!
