    I was skeptical about thatching my lawn, but after watching this video I immediately went down to Home Depot and bought a thatching rake and I also picked up one of those guys in the parking lot looking for work. Thatching my lawn was easier than I thought.

    I did my 10000 sq ft with that rake and it took me around 2 weeks. Quite the workout! I used it when i was killing off my bermuda last year to pull up the surface runners and make it easier to scalp. That was minimal levels of fun.

    While I enjoy taking care of my lawn and garden, that is just crazy! I rent a "power rake" to dethatch. It's so much faster and less back breaking. 80$ for a full day, or 40$ for half day, it's money well spent. Then, run the mower over it to pick up the thatch and done. I couldn't imagine doing that to your whole property. Great demo though and video! It will definitely work.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah this video was more for those who just wanted to understand what the rake does and to demonstrate that. I'm not planning on doing my whole yard! :)

    • @SpencerFcp
      @SpencerFcp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Renting one is kind of silly. You can buy a decent one for a little over $100. Considering a day rental is usually $70-$80, just makes more sense to buy one so you always have it available.

    • @andrewp.619
      @andrewp.619 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SpencerFcp, that's true if those ones for 150$ work decently. The ones for rent are usually commercial units with 6.0hp Honda engines that retail between 1000$ - 1500$. That is a bit for most homeowners who dethatch the lawn once, maybe twice a year. However, I would like to look into one of these cheaper units to see if it would be worthwhile. Thanks for the tip!

      @locodiablo8130 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The $100 greenworks electric dethatcher from Amazon works great! It truly is a back saver. Then like you said, pick up the thatch with the lawnmower.

    • @groussac
      @groussac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but this type of rake gives you a lot more ability to fine tune your approach than the power rake. Use on the whole yard depends on how much time you have for it, the condition and size of your yard, and your overall general health. Frankly, I see this and other yard work as an attractive alternative to paying a gym membership to work out on machines that produce nothing. Other reasons for working out, I know, but just sayin'...

    Front lawn is a hill and also like 50% moss now. Moss is dying thanks to moss-b-gone. I really hope this'll help pull the dead moss and spongy thatch layer out. I can't really get a mechanized tool because hill, a walk behind mower is sketchy enough as it is.

    You'll be out there all day and more with that thatch rake. They work, but man they are labor intensive! . I used to do it that way until I discovered the greenworks electric dethatcher on Amazon for about $100. It makes short work of the job. What use to take me all day, i can do in a couple of hours.. I'd say i decreased my dethatching time by at least 75%

      Fall or Spring if you're on a routine. But really if it hasn't been done for a long time, do it now. You don't want to do it more than once a year though because it can be a bit tough on the grass. Also, buildup shouldn't be bad enough to need to do it more than yearly.

    I'm just starting to get my lawns under control and wondered what's wrong with using a normal rake?
    I did my back lawn with a normal rake and it worked fine.

    I've been in many fights and the worst beating I ever got was from a thatch rake!
