Last year gas tank strap broke, and swung down and hit the drive shaft 90 derees out bust road and I'm ratchet strapping the tank up. Well, turns out the stra just pulled through the mount on the crossmember. Fast forward to this past weekend ,Saf T Cap crossmembers all installed, frame descaled and POR 15 on. I had the bed off two weeks ago,and that was the hardest part, drilled and ground 8 bolts off,a couple wouldnt break free so I drilled a hole down the midde and they broke right off. Thank you for this video,it made it very clear and easy to organize. Great job Justin!!!
On my 2001 the 3rd cross member ( 26:40 ) is actually tubular like the first two and is welded thru the frame the same way, so its definitely structural, but I agree it mostly seems to be there for the spare only, they just went overboard on the early frames, and its only a little V6 1500, I think the frames were this way up to either 02 or 03 and then they switched over to the boxed style on the 3rd cross-member after that for some reason and stopped making it as strong, I can only guess because it just wasn't necessary but how would one ever know without talking to the chevy engineers from that time
Awesome video. I live up the road from your shop. I may have to hit you up when my 2004 is ready for this treatment! Hope I’m a couple years out. I’m going to pull the bed to clean it up and evaluate the frame.
3 to 4 k with cleaning and painting and welding thats not removing the cab though ..paint the frame under it , figuring minor cleaning for the front half of the frame and painting probably around 4k .. though Cheaper if you dont need crossmembers ..but thats rare ,
Hello! Where are you guys located? I am in need of a replacement shock mount and a replacement spare tire bracket in the back for my 2014 Silverado. I’m in the Massachusetts area and would love to use your services after seeing this video.
curious if you could add ATF inside the tubes then seal them up. I have a 2003 silverado and everything seems to rust from inside out. The ATF would stop the inside from rusting. maybe???? how much did this cost. My truck has only 72000 original miles on it and I cant afford a new truck
I just purchased a 2014 Silverado look awesome on outside but something told me to look under truck and it has severe rust underneath like this one or worst I couldn't believe it I asked dealership did they do a full check on vehicle of course I got a yes, this truck must have came from up north I live in South Carolina, I don't wanna put money like this into it to get it fixed cause I had it less than a month smh, I don't know what to do😔 people sell anything now I should've got my own check done on it
Hey what did you use to paint the frame? just a primer and paint? What happend if you take the needle gun on the paint? Will the rust show up? Is the rust still under the paint?-
The rust is cleaned up first, then a self etching primer coat, and finally a top coat of paint. You cant paint directly over rust, it won't stick. I will sometimes use a rust converter on areas I cant clean up 100%
@@MorFabIndustries Hey. I have a 98 tahoe 6.5td im gonna restore the frame of. I use needle gun to get all the loose off. but i cant grind the whole frame. Only where i can get to, So i wondering if its ok to use rust converter insteed of grinding down all over. And do you put primer on top of rust converter? Thanks
Good stuff just waiting for my crossmember to come in it's the one that holds the gas tank in the right rear shock as well as a muffler just wanted to get it run down how some people do it I had a pretty good idea. Your video was pretty clear to the point. Good stuff man but what did you do for the rear cross member that holds the wire harness for the trailer and brake light you replaced it with one by one but what about the drop-down bracket?
Hey ! I am a Guy from sweden, i just buy my first truck Chevrolet silverado 1500 from 1994 With 6,5D. I like your work, if i hade livin close to u i have pay you to do the same work at Mine truck. I have a question to u, where do you buy the metal things ? Do you have Any link to the website? I am really bad at english.. but i Trying ! :) Thanks !
Still digging that helmet? What's the arc color? I had a 9100xxi and it had problems so sent it back 5x. Then they sent me a 9100xx. 2 years went by and I emailed speedglas and they gave me a brand new 9100xxi. But they changed the arc color. Was a bluish tint, now its yellowish. I dont like yellow
Still loving it! I have beat the ever loving crap out of it though so it is pretty dinged up. But its been amazing! I havent touched my speedglas since i got the optrel. I think my next purchase is going to be the crystal 2.0 and use it strictly for tig.
No concerns with warping anything when welding that much in a small area of the frame rail? If so, what do you do to prevent warping? Also, I have the same welder. Great machine.
I’ve got a 2001 Silverado that looks likely to need this treatment right now. She’s only got 115k on her but I’ve always wanted an older truck and knew I’d have to use some of that hard earned $$ to make it pretty again. What do you think this job would cost in todays terms? I’m close enough to Connecticut that I’d potentially bring her down in order to get this quality care. Choosing someone to work on my vehicle is like choosing a doctor I want a good one! Especially when I’ve got two little pink kids car seats in it haha. I’m in southern Massachusetts btw
There's 81 comments and only 7 responses from MorFab. This is only a temporary fix! When you sandwich two pieces of metal together it will rust in between the two pieces of metal. This is why the metal should butt together, and then weld the seam. The frame should be sandblasted, sprayed with epoxy primer, then sprayed with chassis black.
Never weld on an old rusted frame. The right way is to support the frame in suitable places and cut out the old rusted part, make a new part on the frame and weld it. If you weld on top of rust, rusting starts immediately and a hole will rust in 1-3 years.
Whoever designed the frame with those large crosses members had to know they were weakening the frame with it removed there's not much rain metal left there it's obvious GM makes crap vehicles
Nice welds and fab skills, but those frame rails look like crap. Those frames should've been built like a big rig, cross members should be bolted or industrial riveted together. Those welds will fail from torsional and harmonic vibrations 😂
You guys all love trying to pick apart these repairs. I’m here for it! Those crossmembers are welded in from the factory. If they don’t rot, I have yet to see one broken weld. These trucks don’t have an 80,000 lb gvw so there’s no need for them to be built like semis. Plus the repair spreads the weld over a greater surface area than the factory welds.
@@MorFabIndustries when you welded that new replacement plate that should've be bolted with 4 bolts, those frame rails were so compromised , when breaks, it will break on the "thinned" rusted frame rail, right along the length of that pretty weld. I wasn't questioning the quality of your skills, only your judgement on when to weld and when to bolt. Good luck 👍

Jus brought a 1998 gmc this video is dope because I can save a lot of money doing my truck like this thanks bro
What is the estimated cost if you were doing this project for someone? Video length is just fine.
I wish manufacturers made salty road spec vehicles open ended tubes is a horrible idea just like non seam sealed pinch welds.
I live in upstate ny I have rust everywhere. Wish I had a garage like this so I can pull the bed off and see whats going on.
True. I'm in Massachusetts. Same deal here
You don’t need a garage, you just need a few good men to lift the bed off I did this exact process in my driveway with an easy up lol
Thanks for video. It is good to look at what is ahead for 2014
I enjoyed your welding , great job, what wire size did you use? also any particular setting for welding machine?
If one doesn’t have a plasma cutter or cutting torches what would be the next best thing to get them
Old cross members out with?
How much to did it cost to do? I need the same thing done
Your music is below and beneath BUT your work is above and beyond! 👍😎
Just wondering what all of this work would cost? I may get a silverado myself and the frame looks about the same. Needs the exact same work done
Probably in the ball park of $2500 depending on the shop.
I'm thinking can I put that fuel tank in to my 1974 c30 that I have a lq9 4l80 what think thks
Loving the long vid very good quality work. As always keeping it real. 😀
Hey where are you at, are you in new england by any chance.
How much would something like this cost
I have a 2009 Silverado and I can’t find the rear fuel tank support crossmember anywhere any idea where I can get one I also live in Ct
I need the same thing done…need your info id like for you to do it cause you have this down. Here everyone acts like there scared
are you out of CT if so where about ....... just wondering how much you charge

Yes where did you get the kit???

The total job is around $1500 give or take and yes any fluid would help but I recommend fluid film.
Where did you get you parts?
From what I can tell the kit will fit a 2012 Chevy Silverado, except for the shock mounts which can be fab to fit also what you think
How much to go over my 05 lly . I want to have cab mounts floor and frame gone over any price range. I want to bring my baby up to grade
I have an 05 and as far as i can see the cross over the tank is the only bad one how much to do this

How much doesn’t it cost to do every thing you are doing to this truck? Just a rough estimate.
If you buy 90 inches of 3 inch 3/16 wall tubing it cost 275 ish dollars. That's enough to do 2 crossmembers.
