  • In celebration of providing free activities so that every traveller can enjoy themselves in Cape Town and other cities across the world, the Free Walking Tours (started in Europe) offers free! (they run on tips) tours regarding the history of Cape Town, its people and bold culture!
We did the History tour today, which took us to the Grand Parade, Strand Road, the Castle of Good Hope (outside only because itside is another full day worth of activity), the City Hall and Parliament buildings.
Our guide Kenneth was the man of the hour. With a vibrant knowledge of this colourful neighbourhood, Kenneth offered Capetonian perspectives about Apartheid and key players of the time that we hadn't heard having grown up in other parts of the country (i.e. Johannesburg and Durban). The information was quite intriguing (at times disturbing!) and the tour well paced.
The tip we offered for the tour was ZAR/ R 50 or USD/ $ 3 for around 2.5 hours worth of rich well articulated history and fun!
We ended the day with a delicious meal from the Eastern Bazaar nearby. Kashi had a butter chicken, fragrant basmati rice and a garlic naan (lasted her 2 meals, lunch and dinner!). Jon had 1 cheese and 1 chicken dosa. The entire order cost ZAR/ 189 for 2 people or USD/ $ 12.
(We ate this at home on account of not being in crowds for too long as COVID 19 is still a factor).

I have to give it to Kenneth. A free tour of just three people is brutally small. To give it that long with that enthusiasm with a tiny group, he's a legend, the true hero of this video. Think about it right, after working for 3 hours, Kenneth probably didn't earn enough to buy the same meal you had after going on his tour. It would be kind of you maybe to put a link to his guiding page, so he can benefit a bit more directly from your really solid recommendation for him. I'd actually love to get in touch with him to see if we can't work together on a live streaming project.
Folks reading this...if you can afford it, and you end up on a small free tour as we emerge from the pandemic and travel creaks back to life, let's all remember that guides are starving right now, everywhere, and free tours work by having a critical mass/number of participants. This is the time to be tipping free tour guides big so they can pay rent, stay healthy, and be there to teach us, to lead us, to be our first friends and advocates in places yet to discover.

Thanks for the response, and yes! Kenneth was a legend. We really enjoyed the quality of the tour he conducted and learnt quite a few things about our own country we didn't know before.
