  • Our visit to Bo-Kaap in Cape Town was long overdue, spurred by our missed opportunity during the Minstrel Carnival last year. Finally deciding to explore it, we were captivated by the vibrant, brightly-painted houses that seemed to radiate the cheerful spirit of the community. The mosque we chose for our very first visit to one, turned out to be the Auwal Masjid which dates back to 1794. What an incredible experience and one we won't soon forget. Sampling authentic Cape Malay cuisine was a highlight, leaving us eager for a return visit. Navigating the narrow streets by car, we were greeted warmly by the locals, making the experience truly memorable and worth the wait. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #bokaap #capetown

    Hello Sonia and Curtis,
    Thanks for taking us into the deep Cape, the Aquarium, the Waterfront, up Table Mountain and now Bo-Kaap.
    I have good memories of most of these places. Did some compulsory military days in Tamboerskloof and as soldier enjoyed the Bo-Kaap food kindly supplied by the locals, as you may well understand that was our Kombuis. The views over Cape Town were to die for.
    Back then, went up Table Mountain in the old cable car you have shown us so kindly and as filmed by Madame.
    Thank you,
    Frans

      Thanks for introducing us into the inside of a Cape mosque where one can absorb the deep and colourful history of Cape Town. I can smell the spices of Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Africa. Give me a 'Cape Malay'curry anytime. Just don't forget the apricot jam!

    Once again you've done it! Very informative and an eye opener.
    I hate to repeat myself, but we were there around 2000. As an Aussie, a total culture shock, as we have nothing like it here. And back in the day, the Muslim culture was very new to me. I only knew one Muslim in Oz at the time.! Of course things have radically changed a quarter of a century later.
    Anyway, another wonderful video, and hopefully we can revisit in March!

    That was a pretty drive!!
    In the early 60s our art teacher brought us here to paint some of the houses with "broekie lace" balconies!!
    Was so much fun!!
    We were also alowed in the mosque....had to take our shoes off!... and the girls were given shawls to cover our hair!!🕌❤
    But it seems now,that the balconies have been built up....!

      Sonia tells me that baby green is a fairly common term, especially when it comes to baby showers, nurseries and such. So not her invention, no! 😁 For me green is green, so I'm equally happy with mint green! ✅ We visited Simon's Town in Episode 250, so won't be doing another episode on that part of the Peninsula. You're of course welcome to check it out if you have not seen it yet. 😊

    Having travelled with you guys since Leipoldville, I sat this one out, albeit that I worked there in the mid 90s. Your channel has highlighted the destruction of the South African railway network, the burnt town halls and the ineptitude in repairing roads etc. South Africa hardly has a place on the world stage to be anything but a country for its citizens, a vast majority being unemployed and living in poverty. Those in the Bo-Kaap aren't as welcoming as they would like one to believe especially for others cultures as they want to retain theirs. I love this channel, so it shouldn't become one for political discourse, it will be great if you were to explore and showcase places such as Bellville and Durbanville which have several places of interest and history. I cannot wait to wear my official Dustbugs t-shirt and cap 😊

    • @DustBugsTravel

      I'm working diligently on the shirts and caps and you'll definitely know when they and I are ready! 😁👕🧢 I'm happy that you sit out whenever you feel uncomfortable with any video of ours. That's the beauty of freedom of choice. You're correct, we don't and will never engage in political and / or religious discussions on our channel, that's simply not what we do and we have zero interest in it. As you also know, historical facts and different types of architecture do interest us greatly and we simply can't pass by a place where the history dates back to the late 1600's and we feel safe enough to explore. If we only have to explore places where only people live who align with our or our viewers' religious and / or political beliefs, we'll stay at home and never go anywhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️ As our videos reflect the physical state of a town or place on the day we visit, so they reflect the attitude the two of us were greeted with. That is really all it's about for us and our personal experience in Bo-Kaap was a pleasant one.
