My mom is a preschool teacher, I believe they start with letters like M and L (letters with straight lines) because they're easier for kids to write than vowels like O and U.
also m is one of the first things small children can pronounce. normally its 'a' because you just have to open your mouth and then make noise and then the children will play around with different mouth a lip positions and 'm' is super easy because you just have to start with your lips together and then open your mouth. also why children say 'mama' and 'dada' as first words
That's interesting. In my class (I'm from Portugal, so maybe that's why), we learned the letters u and I first, because they look similar when you write them (we use cursive writing).
you might have already said this but afaik the reason the letter m is taught first is because usually m doesn't have any pronunciation variants. Like imagine teaching the letter h to a kid, theres voiced h, unvoiced h, ch, sh, gh, th, plus you have to teach when it's silent, m is just "m"
@@andrewpinedo1883 Yeah, but Duolingo kinda does that already. I think they are starting with M(B, P) is because it is the first sound that a baby can make (except AAAAAA). They only need to attach and detach their lips, which is definitely easy. That's why most languages have M and P sounds for parent's nicknames.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I learned how to read Cyrillic in just 4 months thanks entirely to Duolingo, so I genuinely have high hopes for Duolingo ABC.

I'm a teacher, so I can add some context from the science of teaching reading. When learning letters, consonants are easier than vowels because vowels make too many sounds. When learning to write letters, you usually group them by the type of strokes used, so M uses straight strokes, which is the easiest. Rhyming is also an important skill before learning to read. This is called phonological awareness, the awareness of the sounds of speech and how changing sounds changes the words. The better your phonological awareness, the easier it is to translate that to reading.
