Are Big Triple Fan Graphics Cards Worth It? - Sound & Temperature Test

  • Small GPUs have their place... mostly in prebuilts, OEM systems, and (gasp) ITX builds... however generally bigger is better when it comes to graphics cards. Today we're going to test how much better using 2 (almost) identical GPUs except for their coolers!
    #techdeals #Triplefan #GPU
    Notes:
    #1. Yes, I'm aware these aren't EXACTLY the same cards... pretty close, but it's a fair complaint. This is the best I could do.
    #2. In general, you get what you pay for. Spend an extra $50 on your card and it's usually worth it over the 2-4 years people typically keep the cards.
    #3. The smaller 2 fan card here does NOT have a "fan stop mode", something I didn't notice until after filming this. The larger 3 fan card does, so it goes completely silent turning the fans off when not gaming. The 2 fan card always runs at least 30% fan speed, which is quiet, but not silent.
    #4. This was filmed back when these cards were $1K or less, in the middle of March they are now passing $1,200. That's just crazy and I can't remotely do a reasonable value comparison outside of their mining value. I will revisit them once prices return to normal (if?)

    2 fans can certainly do it and quietly, as long as the cooler is designed well and fans aren't small.
    MSI and EVGA were more than able to make cool and quiet 2-fan 1080Tis which pull 270-280W in full load.
    I can understand 3-fans cards on RTX 3080 and 3090 with their 320W+ but I'm also pretty certain that you can have a massive 2-fan 3-slot cooler with 100mm fans that's able to cool the 3080 well.What I don't understand is why we don't have 2-fan coolers on something like 3070 which pulls 220-250W and can be cooled perfectly fine with one...5700XT with same TDP had good 2-fan cards like Sapphire Pulse and Powercolor Red Dragon and MSI Gaming X. 3070 FE is a good example that it's very much possible with 3070...

    Good video man. I can't remember when or even if I ever had a triple fan GPU, but I was wondering about any difference.
    Having never compared two of them, I had in the back of my mind the idea that a 3 fan GPU would have smaller fans, thus probably whinier or louder fans.
    Funny.

    That's an interesting video, and actually on a subject I have debated myself... I have been asking myself if i'd prefer a 3-fan 30-series card, or a 2-fan 30-series card. I do have a Micro-ATX case, but it's a roomy one, certainly has the length for a 3-fan card and I have no other add-in cards, so I think i'm capable of using either card... of course the main problem... well, it's Spring 2021 and I can't find either card in stock anywhere. Well, i'll keep this video in mind for if/when these cards actually do ever show up in stock anywhere.

    I like the PNY cards, I think they would work well in my case with the massive pass through air flow design. I just built a new PC in a Jonsbo V8 which is an ITX case with horizontal mobo layout, GPU stands vertically. I'm surprised there aren't more cases with this layout, it just makes more sense imo. Less stress on CPU socket and PCIe slot(s), typically better VRM temps due to heat not rising from one component to the next. The top VRM always seems to be the hotspot on any given Mobo. I still need a GPU though to pair up with my i5 12500, I really want to get one of the PNY cards. Their triple fan model would look wicked awesome up against my side vent!

    I would have to argue that you needed to test this more thoroughly. Will the 2 sound different in a normal use scenario such as your average case. With other fans in the system can you tell the two apart. Will the length and width influence the path of air taken by the cases intake and exhaust? Would this cause a difference in temps? In a restricted case a shorter card may be able to pull more air from the rear of the case, a longer thicker card may not and so on..

    As always, "It depends". You'll have an easier time with the dual fan in an SFF build or if you want to water cool (That dual fan card is closer to a FE than not). General ATX, Triple fan would be better, plus the triple fan would move more air than the dual fan making up the difference of being one fan down.
    I personally prefer the triple fan cards as the only two i've owned cooled exceptionally well (5700XT Nitro+ and 6800 Reference). I'd only ever hear the fans on the nitro when they ramped up to 1900rpm. I literally never hear the fans on the 6800 unless i manually set the fans to a high speed. Even at the stock "high speed" of 1650rpm roughly, I literally never hear it. By that point i'm hearing the chipset fan, case fans, and the aio's fans over the card itself.

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it does not "depend". The triple fan GPU is just superior, period. Any argument about SFF builds and water cooling are all external factors that have nothing to do with the GPU itself.

    Like anything it depends. A bad design 3 fan gpu can be as bad as having two or less fans. Also depends how much air you can push to the GPu and the temperature of that air. I feel to make a big difference even more then a water cool system they are going to need to design something like a AC system hooked to the Gpu that is somehow better then a water system. That would be pricey. Also OC affects everything

    I own a gtx 1070. But due to my old corsair 100r case, it wouldn't fit a triple fan, asus rog strix 1070, so instead I settled for a zotac mini version of the gtx 1070. Biggest mistake of my life, not only does that card have a slower clock, but the cooling on that thing is terrible. After I've bought a new case, I'm still stuck with that gpu. Kids, that is why you should go for cases that can suppose longer gpus, don't make the same mistake as I did buying a mini gtx 1070.

    What about kits like the RAIJINTEK MORPHEUS 8057 and adding 2 120mm fans instead of a stock setup? Wouldn't it be more cost-effective to start with a cheaper single fan GPU and upgrade the cooler to a better aftermarket alternative.

    • @espertix5839

      Why buy with a fan? Get a fanless and add in aftermarket cooler then. that lower gpu pricing.

    Usually when I buy GPUs they come with free games on Newegg. However, the last time I saw this happen it was to sell previous generation GPUs. Do you think it might be worth upgrading a 5700xt (assuming MSRP pricing) or waiting for them to offer free games again? Might be worth making a video about this.

    • @TechDeals

      @@davewills6121 5700 xts aren't exactly cheap cards. I got RE3 + Monster Hunter World + 1 month Gamepass with it. My last card came with RE2, DMC5, and The Division 2. I definitely wasn't the only one enjoying these specials. Made buying GPUs a very good value in the past. My concern is that they won't repeat these specials for the newer cards because they are selling for merely existing.

      There's about a 12 percent difference on average between the two. A bit more a bit less depending on the overclocks some AIBs do on their cards. Thishas been known since the 3060ti was released and all the reviewers benchmarked them. The 3060ti is an awesome deal if it was easily available at MSRP.

    Floor's me I can get a smoken $300 AMD cpu and a nice Asus b570 motherboard for a little under $500 and its way more hardware than a graphics card and yet I cant even get a card and there $1,000 each. I can build a super nice "complete" computer for under a $1,000. and the total hardware is 5x what a video card is.

    • @espertix5839
      @espertix5839 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if u have a working built pc which most do, most mainly upgrade the gpu. As it gives the most performance in gaming as a stand alone part. So technically it's like a "new computer " just by itself. CPU's generally last a bit longer in terms of upgrading next.

I was wrong. The quality is insanely good being all metal and its also running reall well. Never seen it go above 65c
